Friday J. M. Schneider is Visiting today and Talking About Plotter or Panster #MFRWAuthor #Suspense #Romance #Panster #Plotter

1. Are you a panster or a plotter or perhaps a bit of both?
I'm definitely a pantser. For many years, I tried to write books by committing the entire plot - from start to finish - to paper, and my books were overly short and lacked conflict and character arc. I realized that it was because my plotting had to control every aspect of the book – how the characters behaved, how they reacted, what they said, etc. I found it nearly impossible to plot a story without plotting the characters as well, and they were just pale outlines of people with no substance and no depth.

Once I came to the understanding that my characters could think for themselves and that I could let them make their own decisions, I was finally able to write a full-length novel. Now I just come up with a very generalized outline and let the characters decide where things will go. And, even though my characters are now autonomous and I let them do what they want, I find I like them better.

2. Which comes first - characters or plot for you?
I think – and it’s not just for the books I write, but for most – that the plot comes before the characters. In the beginning of the book, the characters are reacting to the setting and whatever is driving the story. As time goes on, they start exerting their will on the story, so as they grow in importance the plot becomes secondary to their actions. By the end of the book, the characters are controlling the plot almost entirely.

3. What are you working on now? Is this a book in a current series or something totally new?
I am working on another stand-alone novel. I was inspired to begin it on a cruise in October, and it’s definitely got an island theme going on, as well as pirates (both historical and modern-day) and – I know it’s trite – but treasure to be discovered.

I have such a difficult time coming up with a series idea. I commit so hard to my main characters and try so hard to come up with unique setting and situations that I tend to ignore the secondary characters. I am working on that.

4. Do you have some kind of object or place that figures in most of your books? I use gems a lot, hospitals and caves.
I am finding that water and boats seem to come into play a lot. In Love at Point Blank Range, the MC is a former Navy SEAL who obviously knows his way around in that area. Additionally, the setting is coastal Delaware, so there is ample opportunity to use the bay and the beach.

5. Do you write every day or just when the spirit hits?
I write every day I can find time in my schedule. One of the benefits of having a day job as a technical writer is that I have learned how to "sit down and do it" because I had to pay the bills. That discipline has given me the ability to sit down and start working. However, don’t take that to mean I like everything I write every day. Just because I write every time I sit down doesn’t mean what I write doesn’t stink. But that’s the only way I know to improve – write the bad stuff until only the good stuff remains.

6. Where can we find you?Website: https://jmschneiderauthor.godaddysites.com/

Thursday's Fifth Scene Search For the White Jewel Janet Lane Walters #MFRWAuthor #BWLAuthor #Fantasy #Jewels

From The Songs of Earda
I'm on my way to Pala.
I need to see the Queen
To ask her why the Jewel is Black
And where the White has gone.

    Oh Earda, my Earda
    Once a land of light.
The magic of the Queen grows dim
And soon the night will come.

A chill wind caused Andalor to pull his cloak tighter. He fought the gale for every step he gained. The words of a song he'd heard in a dreary inn played in his thoughts. He frowned. Everyone knew the Queen's Jewel was as dark as a blind man's sight.
Perhaps he was a fool on a noddy's errand, but the Queen needed to hear about the blight on the land and the desolation of people's lives. A few drops of rain splattered on the dusty road. How far to the nearest inn where for a few songs, he might earn a night's lodging and a meal?
He pulled his lute from his back and tucked the instrument beneath his cloak. If he didn't find shelter soon, he would have to burrow in the woods.
Wind whipped his hood from his head, then changed direction to beat against his back. An omen, he thought. He raised his head and saw a lane leading to a large house with lights in several windows. No inn, but perhaps a place to shelter for the night. Chill rain sprayed his face. He broke into a loping run down the path between two rows of briars. Aided by the gusts that dashed against his back, he soon reached the steps leading to a broad porch.
Several of the lights flickered and went out. Had the family retired for the night? The hour was not that late. He crossed to the door. If all were abed, he could sleep on one of the many benches against the wall. He'd gone hungry before and he'd slept outside, but he preferred to work for room and board. He raised the brass knocker and banged the metal plate.
The door opened a crack. An elderly man peered out. "What do you here?"
    "I beg a night's shelter and a meal."
"Do you know whose house this is?" The man's dark eyes skimmed Andalor's face
"Afraid I have no idea. Saw the house from the road just as the storm broke." To the east and Pala, the sky displayed a multitude of colored streaks of lightning.
"Who be you?" The elderly man made his demand in a deep and haughty voice.
"Andalor, a minstrel." Andalor's breath caught. Beyond the servant, a young woman appeared. Lovely of face. Comely of body. A rope of silver hair curved over her shoulder, caressed one breast and tumbled to her waist. Who was she?
"Macker, who braves the storm to visit?"
"No visitor," the old man said. "Just a minstrel seeking food and shelter from the storm."
"Then bid him enter. We've rooms to spare. Perhaps he'll stay to amuse me while I await my summons."
Her voice was silk and velvet, the tone rich and lush. Andalor stared into eyes of crystalline blue and found one of the things he'd sought in his travels -- the woman of his dreams.
"You know 'tis not allowed," the old man said. "You have much to master before your time comes, and lessons aplenty to learn about your future responsibilities."
Her lips thinned. "For five years since I was four and ten, I've been cloistered with none but you and the servants for company. Unless you count the mages who creep and pry. Admit him." Her pale eyes darkened. "Any more lessons and I'll scream."
"It will be as you wish, Milady Reena."
The door swung wider and the stoop-shouldered man stepped aside. Andalor swept off his cloak and bowed low. "My humble thanks, Milady." He lightly touched her fingers and raised them to his lips. "How very pleased I am to meet you."
"And my pleasure as well. You may rise."

2019 Book Hooks

Excerpts:
Senet added another log to the massive fireplace of the lodge’s main room. Though spring had arrived, here in the highlands the night promised to be cold. He stood and filled two mugs with mulled spirits. Before long the doms and domas he had summoned from Easren would arrive. Among the projects he had for them was to undertake tending his guest.
He handed a mug to the gaunt aging man whose graying dark hair and copper-hued skin marked him as kin to the people of the lowlands. Kin yet different, for the man had affinities for all the elements. His knowledge of how to use them was beyond anything Senet knew. He wanted to learn all the old man’s secrets. He raised his mug. “To our success.”
“Ours?” The question seemed tinged with ice. “To mine.” He sipped. “Soon I must leave this ailing body for a younger one. Have you found a candidate?”
Senet frowned. How was this exchange possible? Though he had learned much about the affinities from his guest leaving a dying body for another had never been explained. Senet wanted to know the technique.
The man who Senet knew as He Who Walks With Evil laughed. “I will choose. Make sure there is a wide selection of young men. The best candidates will be less than twenty-five years of age.” His smile failed to reach his eyes. “My choice may not please you. The perfect body may or may not have a single affinity.”
"What do you mean?”
The aging entity’s ebony eyes glittered. “Do not ask questions I have no desire to answer. When the day comes and I rule this land I will tell you what I believe you need to know. As in the days when I ruled the lands of my birth people will bow to me. Since the moment you found my broken body on the shore and restored my health I have planned.” His laughter rang long and loud. “The people will welcome me.”
“Those of the lowlands.” Senet looked away.” He had his own plans for the highlands.
The old man shook his head. “I will permit you to act as my deputy in the highlands but there can only be one ruler."
Senet drew a deep breath. For a moment fear paralyzed him. He clamped barriers over his mind. Didn’t his guest realize without help he was powerless? Who else would find another body for the transfer? Senet hid a smile. On the day of the exchange he would learn the secret and the old man would die.

Meandering On Monday with Janet Lane Walters #MFRWAuthor #BWLAuthor #Writing #Poem #Hidden Tears #Book reviews

Meander 1 -- Poem -- Hidden Tears --

Surrounded by a sea of saline grief
A tear or maybe two escape her eyes.
The ice berg tip of sorrow buried deep
Belie what lies beneath her smiling face.
Her other tears are thrust with forcefulness
To build another layer over pain
And raise compassion in her watching eyes.
Now weeping others' tears, she can forget
The massive ice floe hidden in her depths.

Meander 2 - Book Reviews - Oh, I like to receive them but they are few and far between, especially in these days of Kindle and books becoming inexpensive. I also don't like to write them and I rather envy people who can do those long and insightful ones but that's not my way. I either like a book or I don't like a book. I'm heavy on giving fours and fives. Occasionally I'll give a three but if I can't like a book, I don't review the book. I'm not going to ruin anyone's day with snide or nasty comments. I've had a few of those and they sting for a short time. Probably five minutes since I believe everyone's entitled to their opinion. I've read books that everyone loved and I couldn't get into them. I've read books that get high marks and my pen wants to make corrections and change those sentences to make more sense ot me. But I will continue to review mainly saying I liked the book and why I liked. If I don't write something, means it's not on my favorite list.

Meandr 3 - Writing Have finished the rewrites of Lines of Fire Challenged. Now it's time to go through and proof and add or subtract anything that needs help. Then I will send it off to my editor when I figure who it is.

Sunday's Book - Search for the White Jewel #MFRWAuthor #BWLAuthor #Fantasy #Young Adult #Sword and Sorcery

Search for the White Jewel: The Jewels of Erda (The Jewels' of Erda Book 1) by [Walters, Janet Lane]

There's an interesting background to this story. The idea came to me one night as I was falling asleep. The next day on a saturday, I began to write the story. I had an old Selectric kindof typewriter. I wrote and wrote for the next seventy-two hours with just a few breaks. Fortunately it was a holiday weekend and myhusband was around to watch the children. For several months, I sent it off and received this kind of response. Like the story but we don't publish fantasy. In fact of the ten publishers I sent it to none published fantasies so I put it in the file cabinet. Many years later I was cleaning out the files and i came across this story. I took it out and did a lot of rewriting of that old rough draft and the book was accepted and published by an electronic company that went belly-up but I had my rights back. So it sat for awhile. The next time I sent it off, the editor who accepted the book said the book cried for a sequel and that;s how this series bagan. There may be some reviews from ages ago but no new ones. That's a shame since it remains one of my favorite books.

When the Holder of the Yellow Jewel dies, her ward Liara believes she will become the new Yellow Holder. The dying word of the elderly woman astonishes the young woman. She will hold the White Jewel. This fabled gem has been lost for years since her mother and her sister fought and her aunt took hold of the Black Jewel. Liara, accompanied by her foster brother set forth to find the jewel, escaping the soldiers sent by the Queen and Black Jewel Holder. During their escape, Liara meets Valmir who saves her and her foster brother during a shipwreck. During their journey, they meet other holders of the Jewels, including Reena, daughter of the now dead Queen. Though she has the Black Jewel, Reena has no idea how to use the gem.

Friday's Visitor Rosemary Morris Panster vs Plotter #MFRWAuthor #BWLAuthor #Panster #Plotter

1.                  Are you a panster or a plotter or perhaps a bit of both?

A panster. Before I begin writing a novel, I decide on a plot, but I don’t make detailed plans.

2.Which comes first - characters or plot for you? First

I fill in detailed character profiles for the main protagonists and shorter ones for important minor protagonists. By the time I write chapter one I know the characters as well as I know friends.

3.What are you working on now? Is this a book in a current series or something totally new? I am writing Saturday’s Child, Heroines Born on Different Days of the Week, Book Seven.

Books two to seven are not sequels. They are classic regency novels in which some characters take minor parts in one of the other stories.

4. Do you have some kind of object or place that figures in most of your books? I use gems a lot, hospitals and caves.

No, but my books are rich with details of historical costume, food and places to recreate times past.

5. Do you write every day or just when the spirit hits?

My aim is to have a book, which requires intensive research, published every year. This means I don’t have the option of only writing when the spirit hits. I rarely take a day off.

6. Where can we find you? You can find me at.

Thursday Confrontations Affinities Book 4 Excerpt #MFRWAuthor #BWL Author #Fantasy #Advebture #All Ages

ALIZAND

The first rays of the morning sun entered the window of the nearly deserted young man’s sleeping chamber of the keep. Zand rolled to his back and pushed a pillow beneath his head. Today his group left for the princedom of Easren. Before they departed he needed to speak to Toran on the twin bond. His brother needed to know the quartets had left the keep and to let Dom Ilvan know of their grandmother’s plans. What better time than now?
Toran.
Zand, what’s wrong? It’s barely dawn.
Are you still at the lodge?
Where else would I be?
The time has come. Tell Dom Ilvan the last quartet is leaving for Easren to end the rains there.
Loran will be pleased.
The second thing to tell him is this. Grandmother wants the heirs to come to the keep. She and Dragen will meet you here. They will tell you when it’s safe for Loran to go home.
When will I see you again?
Zand heard longing in his brother’s voice. They’d had so little time to learn about each other. He almost wished he could remain at the keep until the heirs arrived. Not possible. We won’t have time together until the four princedoms are freed from the evil of Dom Senet and his power over the elements is gone.
I’ll tell Dom Ilvan and the others. Good luck.
And to you. Zand closed the twin bond. He rose and nudged Donel. “Time to dress. We’ll break our fast and leave.”

Excerpt:
Sydli

Who?
The question rang in Sydli’s thoughts and brought a gush of fear. Sydli. She answered before she decided whether the voice belonged to a friend or enemy. To muffle her mind, she quickly slammed the barrier her mother had taught her to erect.
She sank on a chair and covered her face with her hands. Though she had given her name to a stranger, she had kept her location secret. Cautiously, she opened the bond to her twin. Emli. Be careful at dinner tonight. We don’t want Lodar to know which of us can hear his thoughts.
Emli grinned. He is fun to confuse but I don’t like or trust him. He makes me feel itchy.
You’re right to feel that way. I have listened to him when he sits at Father’s side. Mandir constantly speaks of Wesren and how wealthy that princedom has become. He hints the reason is because no female or halfling can be the ruler. He also argues that as Father’s oldest child, though his mother was never a spouse, he should be named as heir.
Emli frowned. Father was pleased when Lodar returned. What will we do if he is named heir?
Sydli grasped her twin’s hands. We will pray spouses are found for us in other princedoms.
If Father does that, we will be separated.
Sydli caught a hint of eagerness in her twin’s thoughts. Did Emli want to have a life apart? The possibility troubled Sydli. Before their mother’s death, she had asked Sydli to protect her twin. The promise had been sworn. We could have twin spouses.

Emli laughed. How many high-ranking sets of twins are there? I know of no others. She rose. “Let me be the friendly one tonight. Do you think Lodar knows which of us is the true heir?”

Kirlon:

She nodded. “There are songs you can learn. My mother taught me several. Then the doma showed me how to play them and added more songs.” Seeing his eager expression made her realize how much he wanted to learn. “One song today. Then we’ll go to the stillroom.” She played and then sang the notes of the sleeping song.
Kirlon repeated the notes until he was pitch perfect. “What now?”
“As promised, the stillroom. Tomorrow we’ll learn a version of the hiding song that can be used while riding.”
When they reached the bright sun-lit room, Ash collected a dozen sealed bottles and carried them to the table. “One thing we do is make scented lotions, oils and soaps. You’ll learn to recognize aromas and how to blend them.”
Kirlon sat on a bench. “Are there other uses for these scents?”

Tuesday's Writer's Tip Choosing a Genre #MFRWAuthor #BWLAuthor #Genres #Romance #Mystery #Fantasy #Science Fiction #Horror

After the ide for a book comes the decision as to what genre you want to choose. There are a number of different ones out there. Almost any idea can be twisted to fit into any genre. So look at your idea and decide.

Many writers choose one genre to spend their entire career writing. They may take a little venture into one of the subgenres for a time but the main genre is the one they like to write andmay one they like to read. So let's look at what can happen.

Suppose history is your goal. Historical novels come in many packages. There are the ones that are close to realism. There are ones that choos a particular era like Regency, Georgian and many other. There are historical novels that are mainly romance, or mystery or even have a touch of fantasy.

Romance is another large category. Think of the books you've read that are listed as romance. There can be touches of history, ystery and all of the other categories.

The same applies to Mystery, Think of the different ones you've read and see where they fit. Thereare those with a touchof paranormal, or romance or many things.

So when you look at your idea, look at the genre and decide which category and which sub-category you've chosen to write. Maybe even look at how it could fit into one of the other categories. Choosing a genre can be an adventure abd take you on a new path.

Meandering on Monday wit Janet Lane Walters #MFRWAUthor #BWLAuthor #Poem #Cancer Woman #Loyalty

Meander 1 - Poem -- Cancer Woman --

I am the raging sea
Silent crab-like digging from within
Eating pits beneath the shore
Grinding rocks to sand.
Destroying, changing, enshelled.

I am the calm sea
Glassy surface reflecting sun
Underneath rip currents flow
and hurricane
The silent lurking undertow.

I am the life sea
Nurturing love and blood flow times
An amniotic womb
Nourishing frends and breeding
Contractions of birth.

Meander 2 - We've heard a lot lately about loyalty. I wonder what it means to you and to me. Does it mean the only loyal people are those who say exactly what we want them to say. Are those that cover up misdeeds because they're loyal. I don't think so. I do believe loyal people would also tell when their friend or relative is totally out of line and help them change, To me loyalty doesn't mean keeping quiet when a friend is doing wrong.

Meander 3 Writing. Two chapters to go and then I'll get to the final read through and make a few changes in the story. Then it will be off to the editor and I will shout for joy.

Friday - Kryssie Fortune is visiting and Talking About Who She Was Before #MFRWAuthor

What were you in your life before you became a writer? Did this influence your writing?

A working mum. Mostly I worked as a purchase ledger clerk, but my last few working years (Yes, I’m retired) I worked on Emmerdale – one of the UK’s three big soaps. I started out importing scripts onto the in-house program but eventually technology made me redundant. Emmerdale is like a family.  I had the option to stay on and work in other departments. Naturally, that’s what I did. Obviously, I got to read amazing scripts. I think that helped with the dialogue in my books.

2.               Are you genre specific or general? Why? I don't mean genres like romance, mystery, fantasy etc. There are many subgenres of the above.

I  I write whatever idea shouts loudest. I love my Scattered Siblings series. It’s centres around  wwerewolves and their mates, but the Fae King is the one looking for his brothers and sisters.
M My Heroes of Westhorpe Ridge series revolves around retired military men building their
c civilian lives in the coastal North Carolina Town of Westhorpe Ridge. Each fall for a local  woman, but true love never runs smooth. The stories are as much adventure as romance.
All my books are hot sexy reads

3. Did your reading choices have anything to do with your choice of a genre or genres?

I read anything, but I prefer whatever I read to have romantic elements. Maybe because I grew up reading Mills and Boon, or maybe because I’m a softy at heart. Vampires and Werewolves? Bring them on. Is the hero a former soldier? So much the better.

4. What's your latest release?
Submission, Secrets, and the Soldier. It’s the fourth stand-alone romance in my Heroes of Westhorpe Ridge series. There’s no need to read the preceding romances, but if you have, it’s a chance to catch up on old friends and to make some new ones.

5. What are you working on now?
My first ever Regency Romance. I’m not even sure which publisher to send it to yet since it’s a niche market. Fingers crossed I find a perfect fit.

6. Where can we find you?

Sydli

Sydli shook her head. “Doubtful. Prepare to be charming. I will be nasty.” She finished braiding her hair. They had inherited their pale hair and green eyes from their mother. Their copper-hued skin was like their father’s. Being halflings had held them apart from the people of Nortren.
The summoning bell chimed. Emli walked to the door. “We should hurry.”
They sped along the corridor toward the throne room. Sydli paused at the door to catch her breath and to read who was inside. Emli reached for the handle. Sydli’s forehead wrinkled. “Lodar is here. Father’s thoughts show he is pleased. What has Lodar told him?”
Emli made a face. “Who knows?”
“I could learn.” Sydli felt a brush across her thoughts. Beware. Shield. There’s a stranger in there who can read thoughts.
My blocks are tight. Could this stranger be one of our half-brother’s friends or one of our relatives?
     I don’t know.
Emli opened the door. “Father, we are here.”
When Sydli saw the tall man whose fair hair hung in a braid down his back, her skin prickled. She pulled her barriers too tight she could barely hear spoken words.
The stranger rose. His black leather clothes made his skin appear as pale as newly fallen snow. His coloring and manner meant he was from the highlands. Who was he? A miasma of evil surrounded him. Sydli knew he was no friend.
The man turned to her father. “Pedron, your daughters are as lovely as any I’ve seen.”
His intense glare made Sydli’s shoulder muscles tense. She clasped Emli’s hand. They crossed the room and curtseyed to their father.
