J. Arlene Culiner is Visiting and Talking about Who She Was Before #MFRWAuthor #photographer #contemporary romance #mysteries

Blake’s Folly Romance with J. Arlene Culiner

1.       What were you before you became an author? Did this influence your choices as a writer?

I was—and still am—a social-critical artist and photographer. Some years ago, I had a photographic show in Canada, and the curator asked what my next project was. I told her that I would be tracing 19th-century Romanian immigration, and she said, “That’s not a photo idea. It’s a book.” I realized she was right, and that’s what finally convinced me to take my writing seriously.

2.       Are you genre specific or general? I don’t mean major genres but subdivisions or romance, mystery or paranormal.

I never know what I’m going to want to write. Lately, I’ve been writing contemporary romance as well as non-fiction, but I’ve written mysteries, too.

3.       What is your latest release?

A recent release was A Room in Blake’s Folly, the first book in my series, Romance in Blake’s Folly, but the second book, All About Charming Alice is being released on April 3, and the third book, Desert Rose, will be out on May 3.

4.       What are you working on now?

Whoa! That makes three books in a short time, plus I’m waiting to hear from a publisher about a non-fiction travel/history book that I just finished. Now, all I need is breathing space and a holiday away from my computer.

5. Do your reading choices influence your choice of a writing career?

Yes and no. I tend to read non-fiction, and some of my books are also non-fiction. But it’s more my lifestyle choices that have made me into a writer;

6. Where can we find you?

Thursday's Opening Scene from The Secret of the Jewels #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #fantasy #action #adventure

Seven Jewels and seven threads.  Find them, twine them, bind them into a braid to discover how to unlock the secret of the Jewels. What was pale becomes dark and dark changes to light.  Sometimes destruction is the way to end a cycle of tyranny.   Blazing sun and icy moons unite in the Yellow Jewel.  You must go over land,  across the sea and back again.  Seek the thread and learn this lesson.  What makes a home does not have to be a place.  Fears may lurk and fears are faced when one learns to trust.

~*~

Disa turned and waved farewell to the Holders and their Chosen who remained at the mages’ stronghold.  All but she and Brader stayed to tend to the living and the dead.  Just days ago, the elderly healer had appeared and had given prophecies to all.  The moment Disa had heard those words she knew she and Brader had to leave.  Their role in the destruction of the mages lair had ended.  The overland journey to Quato where they would board a ship to Thanis would take a seven day.

She prodded her horned horse and caught up with her companion.  “Must we race like prisoners released from a dungeon?”

He slowed his steed.  “Why not?  I wish to reach my home as soon as I can.”

Home, she thought.  Hers had been a peddler’s wagon and then the tavern in Pala.  She didn’t understand his being drawn to a place.  “Thy home won’t run.”

He laughed.  “Thee are right, but some inner yearning pushes me to hurry to High Sanctuary.  What if the mages have established a refuge there?”

She made a face.  “Didn’t Andalor mention a ship filled with Queen’s Guards and mages that arrived in Quato around the time when thee did?”

“One or more might have remained.  I need to find out.”

She supposed he was right but that wasn’t his real reason for the rush to return to his home.  He wanted to visit his mother’s grave to bid her farewell.  Did he really believe her spirit lingered on this plane waiting to hear of the success or failure of Liara’s quest?

At dusk they arrived in Desert’s Edge where they purchased enough supplies for the journey.  She nearly suggested they stop at the Healers’ House for medicinals, but could think of none they would need before they reached the market in Quato.

Eight days of traveling from dawn to dusk brought them to the seaport town.  On the outskirts they passed the villa where she had received her Jewel.  “Remember our time here?”  she asked.

“Clearly.  What a pompous fool I was.  Attacking Valmir when he wasn’t the enemy.  Angering Liara and thee.”

She reached for his hand.  “Thee feared someone would harm her and keep her from the quest.”  She sighed.  “I wonder how the others fare.”

“If there were problems couldn’t they reach us on the inner path?”  Brader asked.

“I don’t know.  I’ve listened every night and the voices have grown fainter.  Should we stay here or go directly to the docks?”

He prodded his horse.  “This is too far from town.  We’ll find an inn.  Word of ships leaving for Thanis will be heard at one, but we can’t leave for a day or two.”

She nodded.  “We have to sell the horses.”

“And arrange for passage.  We’re too late for today’s animal market.”

Once inside the town Disa led him to the inn where she and Andalor had stayed.  They were in luck and one of the suites on the third story was available.  After leaving their packs in the suite’s central room, they ordered a meal to be brought as soon as they finished in the baths.

A short time after returning to the suite, Disa opened the door for a serving woman bearing a large tray of food.  Disa inhaled the aroma of brewed chokla and grinned.  She slipped the woman a coin.  Brader entered from his sleeping chamber.  He fastened his amber colored hair at his nape with a thong.

“What of our plans for tomorrow?”  Disa filled a mug with her chosen drink.

“Sell the horses.  Find a ship.  Purchase some extra food for the journey.  Ship’s food is plain and sometimes not tasty.”

“Will we have to wait long?”  Though they’d taken coins from the mages’ treasury, if they were forced to stay too long their coins would vanish.

He shrugged.  “Who knows?  I’ll slip down to the common room.  Someone there will know about sailings.”

Disa lifted a banta leg.  “No tragon.”

He laughed.  “Guess Liara told thee how little tolerance I have for spirits.  I’ll stick to ale.”

Though Disa had planned to stay awake until Brader returned, the soft mattress lulled her to sleep.

Incal Meet one Warrior #MFRWHooks #BWLAuthor #fantasy #warriors #healers #seers

Join the authors at #MFRWHooks here http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com  for some great excerpts. Mine at eclecticwriter.blogspot.com is from Incal

Blurb

Return to the world where Midra and Midran rule. The god and goddess have two faces. Midra is Mistress of the Moon and also Mistress of the Dark Moon. Midran is Lord of lLght and Lord of shadows.

In Incal, the priests of Midran have formed three branches. The Voice of Midran in Incal rules over the mall. In the archived he has read of a tale predicting Three will come to return Midra to the rulership. He sends his acknowledged son to find the three and bring them to him.

Many years ago triplet girls were born in a remote mountain town. When they were five, their dying mother sent them to be fostered by three different women. Though they had wed to find each other, their developing talents caused them to forget until twenty ears later each one of them felt the need to find her sisters.

Would the Voice of Midran in Incal learn where they were?

Excerpt:

Coya dreamed of days long past. Once again she saw herself as a child of five playing with her sisters. On the day of the summer solstice they had been born and had thrived. Three daughters in a single voice had been deemed a miracle. Her dreams slid to the day they had been sent away to different places. Their Mother ailed and grew weaker everyday. The dream fragmented. She was alone, taken from her sisters by a strange woman to a series of caves. They stood at the entrance of a dark hole in a granite cliff.

“This is your new home. Here you will learn how to fight. You will learn the sword and knife and ways to use your arms and legs against the enemy. Perhaps you will be the one to aid Midra, Mistress of the Moon to her proper place in Incal.”

Those words had ended her childhood. From that day she had learned not only physical skills but reading, writing and numbers. She had also been taught about honor and justice.

Her body moved toward wakening. She fought to return to the days when she’d been one of three. For so long memories of her sisters and lain dormant. Why did she remember them now? Was this a portent of the future?

“Coya, wake.”

The voice sounded unfamiliar. She shook her head. Why must she wake? Yearning for those forgotten days drew her like a cord to remain with happy times. Twenty years had passed since she had been with her sisters. Her eyes fluttered open. The snores and breath sounds of the sleepers in the room lulled her. They slept. She wanted to join them and return to her dream memories.

“Coya, Wake.”

The voice sounded loud and drove sleep away. She slid from beneath the covers. Her feet hit the cold stones of the cave floor. She gasped at the shock.

“Come,” the voice urged. “The time has come. The moon rises full.”

Tuesday's Writer's Tip - The Action Plot #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #writing #plot #action

The Action Plot in the beginning scenes often shows the character who will leave and explore the land to fail as many as three times before he's pushed out the door. There should be a reason for this character ti try these semi-leavings, The reason usually isn't understood until the end. Make sure not to make these tasks unrelated.   Remember cause and effect when showing these scenes

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters 3BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #reading #writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading - Have almost finished Anne Perry's Monk series for at least the second time. Am enjoying the intricies of the plots and watching the characters grow. Also read several other books betweenthe Monk stories. Though all right, none were great.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - This Parent's Rights to Children's Education bill that passed makes little sense to me. I fear it gives those parents who do not want their children to learn about the things we have done that aren't nice. This is a country but it lso was settled by Native Americans before we came. There are also the blcks who were msotly brought here as slaves. Other immigrants had their times here when all was not right. Even though those things happened in the past and we can't undo them, we should be strong enoughto admit all the wrongs and see what can be righted is done.

Meander 3 - Writing - Am a bit behind but will push forward now the nonsense with myheart and kidny are under control. Have one chapter finished and a second nearly done, too. Must push ahead.

Friday Tena Stetler isVisiting and Talking About Who She Was Before #MFRWAuthor #paralegal #Paranormal Romance/Mysteries #magic

Day 1

1. What were you before you became an author? I was a paralegal for a criminal law firm for almost 14 years.  Then I was a IT Manager for an electrical contracting firm for 14 years also. Did this influence your choices as a writer? Sometimes.  I’ve written a book about lawyers, A Witch’s Quandary, they just happened to be in Scotland. LOL I’ve written a few books involving computers, cyber security. Security Force of Two, etc.

2. Are you genre specific or general? I don’t mean major genres but subdivisions or romance, mystery or paranormal. I write Paranormal Romance/Mystery. Recently l’ve dabbled in western, historical, timetravel, in addition to romance. But there is always a bit of mystery and magic in all my novels.

3. What is your latest release? Security Force of Two - A former CIA agent and a Special Forces vet return to their small hometown for different reasons none of which includes involvement in an investigation of the new police chief’s murder. Release March 20, 2023.

Set for release July 10, 2023, Raven’s Hollow Spring Magic - Spring is in full bloom in Raven’s Hollow, a unique, small town in the Colorado Rockies when a powerful witch’s mother goes missing and her dragon shifter fiancé travels back in time to find her.  Was the antique jelly bean machine to blame?

4. What are you working on now? The second book in the Mountain Town Mystery Series.  Security Force of Two was the first book.

5. Does your reading choices influence your choice of a writing career? No I don’t think so.  I am kinda eclectic in my reading choices.  I love a good mystery, some contemporary romance, but usually whatever it is has to have magic. Reality is over rated.

6. Where can we find you?

Thursday's Opening Scene from Confronting Erda's Wizards #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #fantasy #jewels #wizards

Much is demanded of a Healer and inner peace is her only reward. She must seek neither power nor wealth. To walk in the Way is difficult and not all who try will succeed.

When a Healer names a man as Chosen, she must leave the House for she must think only of her craft and those who need her care. If she elects to depart, her knowledge of the healing arts will be stripped from her mind. She will be left with only those skills known to commoners who do not follow the Way.

Jindera left the herb storage hut and strode toward the cottage. Clouds dimmed the morning sun, then slid away. The leaves of the oka trees rustled in the summer breeze and the mingled scents of herbals and seasonings swirled around her. The coming of clouds meant a storm approached, but she felt certain no rain would fall this day.

Would the medicinals she would brew from the herbals she’d selected be of any help? She could only hope. All night, she’d fought the fever raging through her mother’s body and had seen no change.

“Mama, why did you leave the Healers’ House?”  Her mother could have remained and raised her children with the sons and daughters of the other Healers. On his tenth birthday, Jindera’s twin would have been sent to his father. But Jindera’s mother had chosen to leave. Love for a man had been her reason.

Tears blurred Jindera’s sight. She had loved her father dearly. His death seven lunars before had brought sadness to a home where love had ruled.

Rays of sunlight glinted on the golden stones of the cottage and brightened the dull yellow of the thatch. Jindera hurried along the garden paths that meandered among the beds of herbals and seasonings.

The plants flourished. Lajin’s touch, she thought. Her brother had only to tend any ailing plant and it thrived. She paused at the cottage door and peered along the road from the village. Her twin should return soon with the staples he’d gone to fetch.

The stench of illness pervaded the room where her mother lay on a narrow cot. Jindera’s breath caught. For a moment, she thought her mother had left this plane without the blessing to release her.

Holding back a sob, Jindera fled to the kitchen to blend a fever potion. She carried the mug of steaming liquid to the sick room and spooned the medicinal into her mother’s mouth. A drop or two fell on the linen sheet and spread like the tears Jindera held inside. She inhaled deeply. She had to hold grief and fear at bay. When the mug was empty, she rested her head on the edge of the mattress and prayed the remedy would work.

She jerked awake. How long had she slept? The light in the room told her ‘twas near midday.

The rasp of labored breathing filled her ears. She felt her own breaths fall into the same pattern. She raised her head and turned toward the door. Where was Lajin? She tried to reach him on the inner path where they could speak in secret. Flight. Fear. What had happened to him? Her hands and body shook. His fear or hers?

Jindera rose and looked outside. The fragrant scents of the garden brought a welcome calmness to her troubled spirit. ‘Twas a false hope. If Mama dies, what will Lajin and I do? Having but sixteen years, they weren’t old enough to hold the land.

She heard a rasping cough and turned back to the cot. Her mother’s eyes were open. A wave of hope spread through Jindera. “Mama.”

“Leave. You. Lajin.  Go soon. Danger comes.”

“We can’t leave you without saying the blessing.”

“Must.”  Racking spasms shook her mother’s body.

“Mama, don’t talk.”

“Must. Once. Three sisters.”

Jindera listened to her mother’s halting words. A grandsire who was a Master Wizard. Mama born on the desert and leaving with her older sister for a Healers’ House. How her two sisters wanted power and schemed to obtain control of others. One who had talent. One who had none. Mama who had talent and wanted love.

What will happen when the Eldest sets her plan into action? Will there be just three women or will they find their opposites becoming the fabled Three and Three? Who will rule the changes to come?

Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2021

An evocative fantasy with hints of The Handmaid's Tale, when females are demoted to a servile role in their society. Ms. Walters spins a compelling story of struggle and empowerment. I must try the other books in this series.
Plus that cover is gorgeous!

EXCERPT:

Etan groaned and opened his mouth for another gulp of water. Who? Where was he? He forced his eyes open. The sun stood high in the sky. Grass surrounded him. He knew he’d done that. Then he saw the woman. His eyes widened. Was he looking at himself?

“Who are you?” He noticed a pale yellow camma tearing mouthfuls of grass.

“Geria and who are you?”

“Etan.” He shook his head. “You could be me.”

She nodded. “Besa, my nurse, told me I had a twin. On the day of our birth a priest took my brother away. Are you a priest?”

He drew a deep breath. “The priest died. He asked Ma Nefru to care for me. She trained me as a thief. Then I grew and became a gardener. Why are you here?

“I couldn’t stay at the wadi any longer. My mother is a midwife but she is troubled by evil. When she learned I helped ill people she beat me until I nearly died.”

“Our lives are much the same. Ma Nefru had me beaten and abandoned because I wanted to give food from the garden to homeless children.”

“Where will you go?”

He managed a sitting position. His body didn’t ache as much as he feared. “I thought to the desert to find the woman who gave me away.”

She leaned forward. ‘She would have killed you. Besa told me our mother believed when the priest took you away both would die.”

“Where are you headed?”

She stood and turned a circle and then pointed. “Something pulls me in that direction.”

“Toward the mountains. Why?”

“I don’t know why. First I must go to Memphos and see what supplies I can buy. I’ll also need to find some kind of riding beast.” She pulled a wand from her pack and ran her hands over the length.

His eyes narrowed. “Where did you get that?”

“Besa gave this to me. She said once the wand had a green gem and was carried by a healer.”

Etan leaned closer. “I had one like that but the first time I was caught giving food away, Ma took it.”

She opened her pack. “I have a little food left. Maybe you can help me in the market.”

He nodded. “I could. We might need to find an inn or some place to shelter if the bargaining takes too long. Then you can sell the camma and buy supplies. The beast should bring enough coins to buy all you need. I would go with you to this place that calls you.”

She nodded. “Not being alone would be good and having someone who knows the city will be helpful. Not to mention a brother I have just found.” She shared the remaining food in her pack.

Tuesday's Writer's Tip - The Adventure Plot - Opening #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #tip #Adventure Plot #Opening

The adventure plot ahs some sameness with the Quest plot. These stories usually begin at home. In the Adventure Plot, the character leaves home for various reasons. He or she may be curious about something. There is a motivating force that inspires the character to leave home. This may be reluctant and the character is often forced to leave and head for the unknown world. In some ways, the Adventure Plot reads like a fairy tale with a character leaving safety for some reason. Adventures follow. So these stories open with the character leaving home whether by choice of by being literally thrown out.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading. Finished the fournew books from BWL and enjoyed three of them. The fourth puzzled me and I couldn't after five chapters decide what the book was about.  Also read severalof Anne Perry's Monk series. Interesting thoughts about law and justice in the book.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - So far since this session began, the Congress has done nothing. We've been watching fools trying to make important things that aren't. Do they care what the majority of the people think. Releasing the tapes of January 6th to a person known not to believe this was more than orderly tourists visiting was a real dumb move by the Speaker. The man needs his mind washed with soap.

Meander 3 - Writing - Am doing a new way of writing the current book since it was already done in Rough Draft and perhaps a draft beyond that. Hopefully I'll have it don in plenty of time. It's the tyoing that holds me behind.
