Tuesday's Writer's Tip - The Middle - The Quest Plot #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #writing #tip #Quest Plot #Middle

The opening shows the object of the quest. The middle is a series of adventures on the way to reach that object. This gives much room for character development and also to show the coming change in the character. Think of the roller coaster headed for that final curve and home. The ups and downs of the character, some triumphs and some defeats leading toward the goal. There is action and reaction in this section of the quest plot.

I've always found this a fun part of the quest story to write.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 Reading - I've been reading a mix of books. Several rereads of Anne Perry's Monk series. They're fascinating and in re-reading I've learned new things. Read an Ellis Peters suspense. Story good but dragged too much. Am currently reading Two Little Girls in Blue.  Interesting and the read is quick but packed with information.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - The amount of nastiness going on makes em feel ashamed of so many people. These neo creeps should be put behind bars rather than being shown on television. Why do some people hate anyone who is different. People come in a variety and tolerance is needed not hate. The soul of the country is being smudged by all this hatred.

Meander 3 - Writing - Busy trying to type in the chapters. Don't know how chapter two vanished but I'll keep plugging along and get this all in. Have started writing the seciond half of the book once that's done, I can start on doing a second draft. Will need to add about 1000 words per chapter.

The first group seeks the focus stones that enhance their affinities. The second group looks for the remaining artifacts, the swords, the staffs, the flutes and the scrying bowls. The third group sets out to find those with their affinities to round the groups to four of earth, four water, four air and four fire. Their strength will be needed in the final battle. The four sets of companions set off to rid the doms and domas of Dom Senet's bonds and to defeat the two evil men. Can they or will they become pawns to evil?

Books by Caroline Clemmons are featured on Saturday's Blurbs #MFRWAuthor #romance #western #Mail Order Brides

Thank you. I’ll share the first three books of the Texas Hill Country Mail Order Bride Series. They are exclusively at Amazon and enrolled in Kindle Unlimited.

1. GENTRY AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE, book 1

Sometimes the perfect match is the one you didn’t expect.

Nothing much riles Gentry McRae. He works hard on the ranch he co-owns with his immigrant best friend, and is content with his life. He’s proud of all they’ve accomplished in the ten years since the war. That is, until his partner dies and leaves a fourth of the ranch to his mail-order bride—and wills the bride to Gentry.

“Now just a doggone minute, I don’t plan to marry for years!”

But, a single woman can’t reside on a ranch where four men live without ruining her reputation. What’s a good man to do, except marry the woman when she arrives?

Heidi Roth has been spurned for being too plainspoken and too tall. In addition, her sister constantly makes fun of her for those reasons. That’s why—with many doubts—she’s willing to travel for months from Germany to Texas to marry a man who once lived in her town. When she arrives, she learns her prospective groom is dead, but left a fourth of the ranch he and Gentry owned. She has serious doubts, but agrees to wed Gentry to protect her reputation. Sure enough, from the next day, one event after the other happens to complicate her life and Gentry’s.

2. JESSE AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE, book 2

What will happen when her lawman husband learns the truth about her criminal past?

Sheriff Jesse Cameron is dedicated to uphold the law of his adopted country. After leaving Scotland, he came to Texas, and learned he liked the place and the people—at least, most of them. He keeps Harrigan County free of troublemakers with his “strict but fair” policy. Now that he has a steady job and has bought a house, he figures it’s time to find a wife and start a family. He and his best friend write to the same matchmaker, hoping their brides will be sisters or friends. Jesse hopes his wife will provide a peaceful home and welcome him each evening with a good meal and a warm smile.

Growing up in an orphanage left Rosalin Arnold too naïve to avoid being trapped in the clutches of an evil man who has her picking pockets. Those who’ve tried to escape him always fail, and are severely punished—or killed. Rosalin has been plotting to get away, and seizes her chance to escape. She takes her best friend with her, and also a boy of eight. All she and her friends want is a home where they can live without constant fear. She prays she has successfully evaded the man who has tentacles everywhere.

What will happen when her past catches up with her, and she’s forced to confess everything to Jesse? Of course Jesse will defend her, but will he forgive her lies?

3. QUINN AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE, book 3

Priscilla Bradford is determined she and Quinn McRae will have a happy marriage—all she has to do is convince him.

Priscilla Bradford’s once-impressive family has fallen on desperate times. She and her brother have lost everything. Against her brother’s wishes, she leaves Boston to become a mail order bride to a man in Texas. She’s relieved when she arrives and finds her groom is a handsome and charming man. His family welcomes her—at last, she feels part of a loving, happy family. But her husband soon behaves as if he were two people. She’s certain he’s a good man, and is determined to discover the reason for his mysterious behavior.

Quinn McRae is overjoyed to reunite with his brothers after being apart for fifteen years. They don’t understand why he doesn’t fit into ranch life on their terms. How can he explain the heartbreaking event that continues to create his horrific nightmares? He can’t—at least, not without revealing the secret he believes would cause them to send him packing. In addition to his internal battle, a local bully is determined to kill Quinn and his brothers.

How will Quinn overcome the bully’s attempts to destroy his family? Can Priscilla and Quinn conquer his doubts to become the happy couple of her dreams?

Friday Caroline Clemmons is visiting and talking about her latest release #MFRWAuthor #Mail Order Bride #romance #research #historical

 1. Tell me about your latest release or the book you wish to feature? Genre?

QUINN AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE is book 3 in the Texas Hill Country Mail Order Bride Series, a sweet western historical romance. I love this book, if I’m permitted to say so. The hero is Quinn McRae, and he appears a charming, easy going man. In reality, he is tortured by something that happened years ago—something he feels is his fault and too terrible to confess. The heroine, Priscilla Bradford, has lost everything but her brother—her home, her income, her father, her way of life. She is determined to have a home and family.
2. Where did the idea arise?
Most readers of western historical romances enjoy mail order bride stories. I enjoy writing them because it’s fun to challenge the characters to adjust to one another. Of course, my romance stories always end in happily ever after—it’s getting there that’s a problem for the characters. Because I live in Texas, I enjoy setting stories here. This series fits, even though the county and town are fictitious. The setting is near where my family stayed at a dude ranch years ago.

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?
I do enjoy research and often fall down a rabbit hole. In this case, I needed to have a town where someone could have been buried to fit the scenario, and it only needed one sentence. It took me hours to make it credible. Even though it’s fiction, I try to keep any reference to actual places or events factual. Every book requires research at some point. For instance, I check names used at that period of history and choose from one of them, often from my family tree.

4. How long did you take to write the book?
This one took longer than usual because our family came down with that really bad flu that was going around. Knocked us out of commission for three weeks. Usually, I spend about four to six weeks writing a novella of 40 to 50 thousand words.
5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?

6. Do you write in a number of genres of stick to one?
I write mainly western historical romance, but also write contemporary romance, contemporary mystery, and time travel. I’m an eclectic reader, so I enjoy writing in a variety of genres.

Thursday features Writing Refuge, Book Two of Affinities #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #fantasy #earth #air #water #fire

When I began Refuge, I knew the group of youngsters had to find a safe place. Not only them but their first fried and the ones they made in the city. During this period, they came upon the Doma who was grandmother to their first friend. They worry about what they;d heard when they left the city. He had to die. Just what did that mean? Eventually they found the answer and they also met their other friends again with the group of people who traveled bringing goods, stories and music to the farms. During this time, they also encounter several boys who have the talents they do. Finally they flee from this place and join their friends. Now the search is for a safe place where they can hone their talents for earth, air, water and fire. In some ways this book was harder to write than the first but this story had to be told. When I finished I thought there would be just one more book but I found to my surprise later that there needed to be four before the quest ended.

Healwoman The Villains #MFRWHooks #BWLAuthor #epic fantasy #healing #swords #quest

Join the authors at #MFRWHooks here  http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com for some intriguing excerpts. Mine is found at eclecticwriter.blogspot.com Meet the villains of Healwoman.

Blurb:

Born under a dark moon, Norna has to battle rumors that she is tainted by evil and unworthy of being anything more than a servant. Discarded by her mother, she runs away from her aunt, a priestess who wants her to enter the temple.
Instead, Norna chooses to be a Healwoman, and a chance encounter with a novice hoping to be a priest helps her discover she has talents of water, air and fire at her disposal. With these gifts she is called on to battle treachery and attempts to prevent the promised prophecy of the god and goddess. As she battles evil powers, she loses her heart to Shandor, the man she met when her journey first began. She must come to grips with Britha who plots against her. Shandor has his own enemy Vorgan. When the pair of foes unite, the battles begin.

Excerpt:

Britha paced across the courtyard of the posada.  Two days wasted.  Two days of boredom.  Two days of assisting Mabe while she treated the commoners.  At least the Militos had left and taken their laughter and joking about her prudishness.  They had no idea who she was or how experienced she was in love play.  She hadn’t been about to waste her talents on common soldiers.

As she peered down the road, she saw a man wearing a gray cloak that changed colors.  He didn’t walk, he swaggered.  When he drew closer, she smiled.  This man was no commoner and he wasn’t much older than she was.  His ice blond hair hung to his shoulders and his skin was a deep rich brown, almost the color of chocha.  She leaned against the wall.

When he entered the courtyard, his eyes appraised her.  She met his gaze and read interest in his dark eyes.  He entered the posada.  She followed and stood near the entrance to the common room.  He removed his cloak.  Her gaze lingered on his broad shoulders and muscular chest.

“Publican, a room for the night.”

The burly man bowed.  “Your name and reason for traveling?”

“Vorgan, aspirant to the priesthood on a quest for the Gate of the Shadows.”  He flipped the man a gold coin.  “This should cover my stay and the things I’ll need when I leave.”

“I’ll have a room prepared and make sure the bathing room is available.”  The publican bustled away.

Britha stepped closer to Vorgan.  “Don’t you take a risk by traveling alone?”

He turned.  “I’ve no fear.  Soon I will be Thiasi mid Vor.  Healwoman, what is your name?”

The timbre of his deep voice sent shivers along hr spine.  “Britha, cousin to Bodlesa, Keltoi of Keltoi.”

His eyes narrowed with interest.  “Have dinner with me.”

“I would enjoy that.”

“Give me an hour to get settled.”  He raised her hand to his lips and ran his tongue over the knuckles.

“I’ll be ready...and waiting.”  Britha hurried to her room on the woman’s side and opened her pack.  She pulled several vials of skin oil she’d blended.  After sniffing each, she chose one with an earthy spiciness.  This Vorgan was delicious.  Recalling how her fingers had itched to stroke his skin brought heat to her lower abdomen.  The speculation she’d seen in his eyes when she had mentioned her cousin made Britha believe she might have found an ally for her own plans.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #reading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading - Stepped away from Anne Perry's Monk to read two suspense featuring an unique FBI Agent and a small town Chief of Police. Interesting and tense times in both books with hero being kidnapped in one and rescued by an orphan boy. Second finds one of Mercy's colleagues being shor and then her niece. Learned a bit about preppers and also of those who swear no fidelity to the US. Interesting. Now it's back to Monk,

Meander 2 _Thoughts - These days most of my thoughts have been on my body that seems to be inrebellion. At least the breathing problems seem less and the edema, also. Had an echocardiogram and found this an interesting process but also boring since all one did was lae down and breathe. Hope the tests will show something wonderful.

Meander 3 - Writing - Must finish typing Chapter 1 for then I can progress to other chapters and begin writing again. Working on that.

D.V Stone and Friends are visiting and talking about a coming release

D.V. Stone and friends are Visiting and talking about their coming release #MFRWAuthor #fantasy #paranormal #Viking

Thank you so much for hosting the Mortar & Pestle authors, Janet. I took a good, long look at your body of work on your eclectic writer website, and I’m very impressed by the scope and variety. I look forward to discovering a new writer.

My book releases March 21. It’s a paranormal romance, my first ever.

Tell me about your latest release, how you got the idea for the book, and the genre.

The idea for Revamped, my latest book, came about one afternoon when I was socializing with six other author friends––or mateys––as I’ve grown fond of calling them. Mind you, we weren’t at a happy hour in a restaurant.

We were all on Zoom.

By the way, I borrowed the term “matey” from my author bestie Marilyn Barr. I have six author besties in our Mortar & Pestle group. Over the past year and a half, the six of us got to know one another online as we discussed publishing, writing, marketing, and brainstormed our story ideas. I wouldn’t have written Revamped without my besties.

One day, when we were gathered around our computer screens, someone suggested we write a series together with a common element that travels through time. How we decided on a Mortar & Pestle, I don’t recall. We all came up with book proposals and chattered about them. It’s much easier to pop out ideas for a book than to write it.

Since my favorite books to read and write were women’s humorous romantic fiction, that’s what I said I’d write.

Until Sydney said, “Why don’t you throw in a little paranormal?”

“I don’t know anything about paranormal.” Thinking how ridiculous. “And I don’t like all that blood.”

“You make it all up. It’s your scene, jelly bean,” piped up Darlene. Or was it Jean? Or Marilyn?

“Your character can be an energy vampire,” said Donna. “No blood.”

“Yeah. No fuss, no mess,” Ginny laughed.

The truth is I don’t remember who said what, but the end result? I took the bait and invented a new world, different from the world I usually wrote in. What fun I had cooking up trouble for Dante, my energy vampire, and Sophie, his honey. And figuring out how the Mortar & Pestle would appear in the book and bring the two main characters together.

As a side bonus, I now find myself open to reading across many genres as I devour my mateys’ books.

The series starts with Sidney’s Selkie. I can’t wait to read her book. I’ve already read Jean’s Seeker, Marilyn’s Quartermaster, and D.V.’s Sea Hunter, all thoroughly researched. In fact, D.V. traveled to immerse herself in her research by climbing all over a ship off the coast of Massachusetts. Darlene’s Trickster was a hoot, and Ginny’s Artist comes next on my TBR pile. Our books are the three contemporary romances in the series.

How much research was involved in Revamped?

Not much. I read up on energy vampires and watched a few YouTube episodes of What We Do in the Shadows to learn about psychic vampires, called energy vampires in the book.

Mostly, I had to create a world in which energy vampires were a thing and figure out how to reveal the world to the reader without info-dumping. I wanted my vampires to be able to go outside since they live in Florida, and I read that energy vampires aren’t affected by sunlight. So, that worked.

How long did you take to write the book?

I think it took me three months to write, but I rewrote and edited for another two months afterward.

Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?

I wrote short stories back when I was a teenager, wrote a book I self-pubbed but didn’t know how to promote, and that’s my story.

Sorry, but I have no idea what my sun sign is.

Do you write in a number of genres or stick to one? I write women’s fiction that’s heavy on romance. Revamped is my first paranormal story.

Where on the internet can you be found? Don’t forget to grab a copy of our FREE Prequel to The Mortar & Pestle series where you’ll meet all the characters I mentioned in the books above.

1. Tell me about your latest release or the book you wish to feature? Genre?

Selkie is a fantasy viking romance set in 900 A.D. When Klaus’s bride is snatched on his wedding day, he makes the drastic choice to capture a powerful selkie and use her to barter for his bride back. However, he never expects to fall for the alluring selkie. But as the blood feud between clans creates tension, he might realize too late that he had everything he wanted by his side all along.

The Mortar & Pestle plays a big part in Selkie, symbolizing true love and complete sacrifice.

2. Where did the idea arise?

I already had some of the story mapped out in my head but didn’t quite have a use for it yet. When a group of authors proposed the Mortar & Pestle series, I knew this would be the perfect fit. I thought the idea of Selkies was something new and fun to write about, and pairing it with Vikings just made sense.

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

A frustrating among of research. I’m not normally a historical author, so when I write historical pieces, it really stretches my comfort zone, and I only hope to get everything correct by the end.

4. How long did you take to write the book?

About a month. Once I have an outline, I aim to write 1500 words a day. The editing takes longer, especially when I have to add, subtract, and polish. Overall, around three months.

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?

I’ve been writing for about fifteen years. Though, only in the past three years have I focused on an actual publishing career. Leo is my Sun Sign.

6. Do you write in a number of genres of stick to one?

I read a ton of different genres, but I usually stick to writing fantasy and paranormal romance. Occasionally, I’ll write a historical, but it’s usually infused with a fantasy element.

7. Where on the internet can you be found?

Trickster is a contemporary romance with a mix of fantasy. Here's a teaser and the blurb...

Revamped with energy, the mortar and pestle materialize in Redford Falls. As smoke circles within the stone, orange flecks of glitter turn to green, strengthening its chosen path and setting its magic in the hands of a woman with eyes the colour of jadestone. She is the only one who has the gift to heal the man known as the trickster.

Can she heal a trickster before he breaks her heart?

Working for a top modeling agency is Jade Parsons’s dream job until her boss suffers a heart attack, and his son temporarily fills his position. Eric’s push-pull approach fuels her frustration. While anticipating the troublemaker’s imminent departure, Jade’s destiny is revealed through a magical mortar and pestle, leaving her heart tormented by whispers of a different fate.

World-renowned photographer Eric Martini returns home to restore his relationship with his estranged father, but wounds from the past haunt him. Enchanted by his father’s feisty assistant, he masks his heart and refuses to give in to desire. Convinced his destined future is already written in the stars—and doesn’t include Jade, Eric’s only choice is to walk away.

Will Jade and Eric find the courage to trust the mythical and smokey signs before their paths are severed forever?

2. Where did the idea arise?

Jade Parsons, the heroine, has appeared in two other books in my Redford Falls series, and I had a story planned for her, but when my group of writers brought up the idea of writing a series of books with a common link, Jade's story quickly came to life.

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

Because I was working within a series already developed, I only had to research some Italian and Indigenous language, but one always seems to fall into the proverbial rabbit hole of research.

4. How long did you take to write the book?

I started Trickster in April of 2022 and finished in October. I'm a slow writer.

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?

I've been writing since my teens, but scripted my first full manuscript over fifteen years ago. I'm a Capricorn, and Capricorns can be incredibly hard on themselves and that trait is especially true with my writing, leading me to be persistent and determined.

6. Do you write in a number of genres of stick to one?

I tend to stick to contemporary romance on the sweet side, but I enjoyed mixing in fantasy. I've also slipped some mystery into some of my contemporary romances and have a mystery trilogy I'm hoping to write.

Where on the internet can you be found?
