Blurb:

Two sets of halfling twins, Ashlea, Brandien, Jaydren and Kylandra sent away from their home by their parents to protect them from trouble, search for mentors to teach them how to use their affinities.

During the escape, they face many problems forcing them to use their affinities by trial and error. They also meet Alizand, the son of the ruling prince of Wesren. Zand has an affinity for Fire and this will keep him from gaining the rule.

Dom Senet, an advisor to his father, and once a friend of the quartet’s parents suspects Zand’s affinity. He wishes to corrupt the teen and use him to gain control of the four princedoms of the land and of the highlands. The evil dom has all four affinities. The four must reach a secret place and find teachers before the evil man discovers them

Excerpt:

“How can we pass it?” Ash said.

Ky rose. “This task is mine.” “I could move the rocks,” Jay said. “But that would take a long time. I’m just learning.”

“How?” Bran asked.

“With fire.”

Ash shook her head. “Fire did destroy some of the fibers, but look what happened to me.”

“I’ll use the flame sword. That’s different than a torch.” She handed her cloak to Bran and unsheathed the sword. As she thought about sending fire through the blade, she hoped she could master the flame. The only time she’d used the lessons her parents had given her had been when she’d set her fear, anger and grief free. “Fire can help and fire can harm.” The web was a thing of evil. Could she call forth anger without triggering other emotions?

Jay touched her arm. “Will the twin bond help?”

She shook her head. “Don’t think so, and you’d better all stay here. I don’t want to burn anyone by mistake.”

“Be careful,” Ash said.

Ky walked around the bend and for the second time confronted the web. She jammed the torch in a crack in the rocks and studied the intricate pattern. She wished she’d asked Bran and Ash if a living creature had spun the web and if it lingered. She had no desire to face something from a bad dream.

Ash had tried to burn away the strands that clung to the rocks and had been burned. The center, Ky thought. That’s where she’d start.

She raised the sword and called fire. Tiny flames danced along the blade. She drove them together until a line of fire extended from the sword’s tip. As she glided toward the web, the strands seemed to quiver. Was the web a living thing? If so, ‘twas evil.

The tongue of flame touched the circle in the center of the weaving. A puff of dark smoke stained the air. Then with a rapidity she could scarcely believe, the center blackened. The darkness spread along the web lines. The smoke grew heavier, billowed and flowed toward her. She coughed. Her eyes watered and the sword wavered.

Back, she thought. The smoke stole the air she needed to breathe. Help!

A gust of wind came from behind her. The smoke cleared. Ash, thanks, she thought.

The fire had gutted a large part of the web. A few strands still formed a barrier near the ground. Though exhaustion threatened to swamp her, she gathered the flames and moved to clear the rest away.

The flame touched the red line. One end of it whipped toward her. The end touched and wound around her wrist. Ky screamed. The flame from the sword moved in a blinding pattern of light.

An exquisite pain shot from her wrist to her shoulder. The sword fell from her hand. Ky felt dizzy and she wanted to lose the contents of her stomach. Blackness engulfed her.

Ky.

Tuesday's Writer's Tip - The Rescue Plot - The Middle #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #writing #tip #middle #Rescue Plot

In this plot pursuit is the key. The protagonist chases the antagonist and enter's his enemy's world. The antagonist develops problems and obstacles galore. The true hero persists. He can be injured but not badly. He manages to escape each of the twists and turns. The traps and twists are clever but the true hero manages to escape each one. These need to be clever and surprising. So when developing this type of plot, make sure the bad guy is sneaky and tricky and the heor cleever and stubborn.

Meander 2 Thoughts - Will they or won't they. There are several suites against Trump coming to court. I know what i would like to see. This con man needs to face who and what he is. I hope these criminal suspicions come to fruition and he is forced to face what he has done.

Meander 3 - Writing - Have five chapters typed in and am working on Chapter 6. So four to go. Have put Iced Tea asiide until I manage to get this sent off.

The Mrs. Miller Mysteries series is a sheer delight. Miss Marple and Jessica Fletcher would love Katherine Miller. I know I do. ~~ Writer Gail Roughton

Christina Lambert is visiting and talking about Heroes, Heroines and Villains #MFRWAuthor #Shifters #Bear's Dream #resort

1. Heroes, Heroines, Villains. Which are your favorite to write?

Villains are so much fun to write. I can make them range from single minded in their goals to the point of being harmful or I can make them sadistic and twisted, but always, I give them a reason to be who they are. Still, heroes and heroines are my favorite to write.

2. Heroes and Heroines. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or plain imagination create the man you want every reader to love? Do they come before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?

The main characters often come to me before the plot of the story. For me, the starting point is always the characters, and creating these imperfect people who are good at heart and truly deserve love. Sometimes stars in movies or music videos give me ideas for what the characters will look like, other times, the characters appear in my mind, clearly, and I have to write everything down before the thought and memory fade.

3. Villains or villainesses or an antagonist, since they don’t always have to be the bad guy or girl. They can be a person opposed to the hero’s or heroine’s obtaining their goal. How do you choose one? How do you make them human?

The villains and antagonists I create tend to have a goal, one they pursue with a selfish, singlemindedness that harms others. They have forgotten that the suffering they cause to prove their point of achieve their desires can be just as horrific as the problems they think they are solving.

4. What is your latest release? Who is the hero, heroine and or the villain?

Bear’s Dream (Haven Forest Resort book 1) is my latest book, which is Ellie Ortiz and AJ Shepherd’s story. Ellie makes decisions quickly and sometimes worries that she’s being impulsive. She is an amazing cook and kind-hearted. She has a giant dog named Curtis who she found tied to a tree and starving when she was on a hike with a friend.

AJ is quiet and serious. He spent a lot of time in the Shifter Enforcement Army and saw a lot of horrible things which have weighed on his mind. He and his brother decided to work on opening a resort so shifters can have a place to celebrate things and run free without worries.

5. What are you working on now?

I am working on book 2 in the Haven Forest Resort series. This book will feature Rob, the leopard shifter Head of Security at the resort who had a small part in book 1. I will also be working on completing my Stranger Creatures series as well as publishing some poems in different magazines and anthologies.

6. How can people find you?

Thursday's Opening Scene features Murder and Mint Tea #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #cozy mystery #Robespierre #murder

The pale winter sun shone through the kitchen window.  I cleaned up the last of the mess from my adventure.  The caper hadn’t gone as planned.  How many do?  In my many years of life, most of my plans have taken an unexpected turn.

Merup.”  Robespierre my Maine Coon cat announced a visitor on the way.  He’s almost as good as a doorbell.  The firm rap on the door told me this wasn’t one of my female friends.  “Come in.”

Pete Duggan strode across the room and thrust a bouquet of bright carnations into my hands.  A red hue, almost as vivid as his hair, stained his face.  “Mrs. Miller, got to hand it to you.  I’ve come to eat crow.”

To hide a smile I buried my face in the flowers and inhaled the spicy fragrance.  “How about chocolate chip cookies and mint tea instead?”

“Sounds great.”  He straddled one of the chairs at the table and picked up the local newspaper.  “Local Woman Thwarts Robbers.”  His grin made him look like the ten-year-old who had moved into the corner house on my block.  He cleared his throat.  “The guys at the station ribbed me about this.  Did you forget the plan?”

How, when the idea to catch the real thieves had been mine?  A series of burglaries had plagued the neighborhood for months and had troubled me.  Especially when the police had decided two teenage neighbor boys were the culprits.  I knew the pair and had disagreed strongly enough to set myself up as a victim.  Then I informed Pete.

“Did you forget?”  he repeated.  “When I crept up the stairs and saw you grappling with one of the men, I nearly had a heart attack.”

Heat singed my cheeks.  “How was I to know my date would poop out early?”

After filling two mugs with mint tea I opened a tin of freshly baked cookies.  How could I admit to a nagging doubt, or tell him I had wanted to be part of the action?  In July I had turned sixty-five and in September retired from the nursing staff at Tappan Zee Memorial Hospital.  Six months of placid existence had made me edgy.  Lunch with friends, coffee with the neighbors and weekly bridge games with old cronies bored me.  These events held none of the challenge of meeting crises at the hospital.

Pete scowled.  “You could have gone to the Prescotts’ house.”

“They’re away.”  I sipped the tea and savored the cool mint flavor.

“The Randals’ them.”  He pulled the other mug across the table.  “The guys insist the two of us make one perfect cop.  Want to hire on?”

“I’ve no desire for a third career.”  Until my husband’s death twenty-five years ago I had been the organist and choir director at St. Stephens Episcopal Church.  Needing a way to support myself and my son, I enrolled in the nursing program at the community college.  “Besides, I’m too old.”

“Old, never.  You look the same as when we moved here.”

“It’s the dye.”  His puzzled look tickled me.  Dyeing my hair makes me look younger.  “I came into the world with red hair and I intend to leave the same way.”

Laughter rumbled deep in his chest.  “A worthy ambition you nearly fulfilled last night.”  He touched my hand.  “Thanks again.  You kept me from making a mistake that could have ruined those boys.”

I lifted my mug and inhaled the aromatic steam.  The evidence against the pair had been circumstantial and strong.  They had done odd jobs at all the houses that had been burglarized.  “I’ve known them since they were infants.  Nothing I’ve ever seen in their actions to make me believe they were guilty.”

Pete made a face.  “I’ve known them just as long.  Didn’t stop me from suspecting them.  How could you be sure?”

“Forty years of living in the same house has attuned me to the rhythms of the neighborhood.”

     “Twenty years hasn’t helped me.”

“There’s living and living.”  Some people are so concerned with the melody they never hear the underlying harmonics.  As a musician I’ve learned to listen.  As a nurse I know how to evaluate symptoms that are sometimes similar but are caused by different diseases.  Those traits are a vital part of my nature.

Excerpt:

As they moved onward, Bran felt as though he walked through a fog. The grief, the fear of the younger pair beat against his own insecurities and the beats became stronger, louder. He staggered and fell. His knees cracked against the rocky surface. He closed his eyes.

“Bran,” Ky yelled. “Get up. Get up! Jay, help me. Bran fell. I think he’s sick.”

His siblings pulled him to his feet. He stumbled between them.

“Come on,” Ash called. “We’re here and quicker than when Mama and I came.”

Half-dragged by the younger twins, Bran lurched forward. When they rounded a bend, a blaze of light made his eyes water. Crystals embedded in massive columns of what looked like glass took color from the torchlight. A rainbow flowed across an expanse of clear water.

“The pool … take me.” Bran’s voice echoed in the eerie silence. When they reached the pond, he freed himself from his siblings’ grasp. “Leave me.” He knelt and thrust his hands into the icy water.

At first, the cold made him shiver. The clarity of the pool darkened. Inky stains spread from his fingers. Grief, fear, anger flowed from his spirit. The uneasiness that had engulfed him ebbed away. He watched the water beneath his hands go from black to gray, and then clear.

He rose and strode toward the three clustered around a small fire built from the ends of the old torches. He opened his packet of journey food, held a piece of flatbread over the flames. When it softened, he wrapped it around a slab of cheese.

“What did you do?” Ash asked. “I feared for you.”

Bran swallowed the bite he chewed. “Took Ky’s feelings into myself, then Jay’s. They made me feel … heavy.”

“I didn’t mean to harm you,” Ky said.

“You didn’t. I haven’t done this before, except with Mama or Papa. The things they sent were different, not as real as the ones today.”

Ash frowned. “You must take care.”

“I can’t help experiencing what others feel. You heard what Papa said.”

“There should be a way to block what happens,” she said.

“They never taught me how.”

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading - Have finished 2 books by Anne Perry in the Pitt series. Enjoyed both. Also have begun a Tony hiller man story - Dance Hall of the Dead. Enjoying rereading this book since years have passed since I read the book.

Meander 2 - Thoughts _ The looming default of the government is on my mind and I woder about the Republicans who are trying to force this to happen. I don't see them as being other than hurtful, greedy men and women. Knowing they are being so destructive of the country makes me sure I willnever vote for another Republican again. In the past I have split my bllot voting for those who i thought were willing to see our country shine. This is not the present. Why are they still following Trump, a rapist, and a man with many other charges hovering over his head. I don't understand them at all.

Meander 3 - Writing - Typing like crazy and am now on Chapter 4. Have begun Murder and Iced Tea and have one chapter rough drafted.

Sunday's Book features Murder and Mint Tea #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Cozy mystery #Maine Coon Cat

Katherine is a retired nurse and a retired church organist. The small Hudson River village where she lives in her Victorian “Painted Lady” makes her the neighborhood matriarch. Along with her Maine Coon Cat Robespierre, she guards friends and families.

When amoral Rachel moves into the first floor apartment of Katherine’s house, trouble erupts. The murder weapon is one she recognizes and makes her fear for her friends and family. Finding the killer becomes her goal.

Editorial Review
Murder and Mint Tea is a gem in its genre, combining the voice of a classic American whodunit with that of a traditional British detective novel. Murder She Wrote meets Miss Marple in a beautifully crafted tale that makes the reader want to reach into the pages and dispense justice to the villainess themselves. ~ Writer Gail Roughton

Hang onto the land – but at what cost? Feisty widow hires ace racehorse trainer to salvage her family’s heritage. Can they survive escalating threats to life and limb?

During an oppressive Iowa summer of drought and farm foreclosures, widowed Maggie Anderson makes a bold decision: She’ll merge her love of horses and her family’s three hundred and twenty acres into a horse farm and try her hand at nearby Prairie Meadows Race Track, where racing purses have just been augmented by the recently added casino gambling.

Detour Ahead

Threatened race horses, city slicker attorney, sexy California wrangler—what can possibly go wrong?

Hot-shot Chicago prosecuting attorney Traci Steele works tirelessly keeping rapists off the street to prevent other women from suffering the hell she’s endured, so she resists her friends’ insistence that she take a two month R&R in their California Live Oak condo—until they persuade her to help their rancher friend as a private investigator.

Though he runs the stables at Live Oak, well-muscled mustached wrangler Scott McCord much prefers working with the race horses he trains at his ranch, and he can’t believe his old friends have sent a greenhorn female to help him with horse troubles.

The improbable dance between this mismatched pair barely fits in around the escalating suspense of whoever’s after Scott’s horses. Traci is as tenacious in her sleuthing as she is terrified about her inability to ever love a man. Can Scott succeed in gentling her – like he does his horses – before she flees in panic?
