A Second Chance

Can a person learn to live and love again?

A single moment changed Jessica Winters’ life forever… a drunken driver crossed over the centerline and stole the lives of her husband and her little boy. Now, she is trying to find meaning in her life, and she has immersed herself into the world of journalism. While on her way to cover a story, she swerves to miss a deer, and loses control of her car.

When she awakens, everything has changed—even the century.

Captain Harlan Jefferson Baylor had found Jessica, unconscious and, to his eye, half-dressed, and he had taken her to the only person he thought would offer help: the local madam. But he’s intrigued by her, and it’s the first time that’s happened since his wife and child died during the Civil War.

With Harley’s help, Jessica must piece together a new life in the rough, antiquated town. She soon realizes that he not only holds the key to her return to her former life, but he may also hold the key to her heart.

Her rescuer is the only constant in her now chaotic world. And, to Lily's surprise, she fears more for her heart than she does for her life when she’s around him.

Valerian DuCharme is an unusual vampire. Although he’s an enforcer for one of the houses of The Hidden, he's welcomed by the principled everywhere for his charisma, his caring, and his powers. Valerian lost his true love when he was turned, and his heart has been encased in ice for hundreds of years. Until he meets Lily. And he warms to her charms. But his job is to keep Lily safe. Can he do that and love her, as well?

Friday Join Augustina Van Hoven As she talka about Characters #MFRWAuthor #Romance #writing #heroes #heroines #villains

Characters

2. Heroes, Heroines, Villains. Which is your favorite to write?

It depends on what type of story I am writing.  If it is a time travel story then it’s the traveler regardless of the role they play in the book. I love writing from the point of view of the fish out of water. For the other genres I write in, I like the hero. Most of my heroes have a secret or a problem they are hiding and that always makes for an interesting character.

3. Heroes. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or plain imagination create the man you want every reader to love? Do they come before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?

For me the idea for the story comes first. Once the plot comes together, I develop the characters along with their assets, flaws and backstory. I like to cast an actor for my hero and keep a photo of him in front of me for inspiration.

4. Heroines. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or imagination create the woman you want the reader to root for? Do they appear before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?

I find my heroines the same way I find my heroes. I start with the idea, build the story and then find the characters. I like to work with strong characters who are opposites, like privileged verses working class, traditional verses independent, and powerful verses activist.

5. Villains or villainesses or an antagonist, since they don’t always have to be the bad guy or girl. They can be a person opposed to the hero’s or heroine’s obtaining their goal. How do you choose one? How do you make them human?

The key to writing a villain is that no one is completely bad or evil. My villains have their own dreams and personal reasons for doing what they do. In my stories you learn the villain’s backstory and the reason they feel they have to do what they are doing.

6. What is your latest release? Who is the hero, heroine and or the villain?

My latest release is Harbinger. This is the first book in The Eldritch Series. This is my first venture into supernatural suspense. The story takes place in 1879.

On All Hallows’ Eve, the barrier between the living and the dead is thinnest.

Nicholas Harwood has inherited an unusual job—keeping the dead quiet. For several nights before All Hallows’ Eve, he pours a potion derived from a family recipe on the graves of the late residents of Dante’s Hollow to keep the dead from walking. So far, he’s been successful. But something—in addition to snow—is in the wind, and he can’t stop it alone. Nicholas and his unlikely group of companions—a druid sorcerer, a witch, and a ghost or two—are locked in a power struggle with rogue supernatural powers intent on unleashing great evil.

7. What are you working on now?

I’m currently working on a time travel novella for Valentine’s Day. It’s a story that starts in 1806. Henry, the third son of an Earl is on a ship heading for New York when he suddenly finds himself in modern day America.

8. How can people find you?

Holding the promise close, she hurried to the Lodge.  Wait until she saw Luke and told him.  Happiness threatened to erupt.  Thea, grind, nerd and all those other names her peers called her, had found her true love.  Thea who had never had a date until this summer had found her perfect mate.

Luke was the best-looking of the Lodge’s summer employees.  Tall, dark-haired Luke was hers.  They had so many common interests.  When they weren’t making love, they talked and seldom disagreed.

She thought of the way the other female employees and some of the younger guests had flirted with him.              Thea laughed.  From the moment their eyes met, they had been a couple.

Thea hurried back to the inn.  She arrived on the second floor and began her evening routine.  She opened the first of her assigned rooms, folded down the covers and placed a chocolate on each pillow.  She entered the bathroom to make sure there was a good supply of fluffy towels.

            “Thea.”

She walked to the door.  Her friend leaned against the wall.  “You finished already?”

“Just.  You’re running late and I know why.”  Sue giggled.  “Saw you and Luke sneak off.”

“For ten minutes.  No big deal.”

Sue cocked her head.  “I wanted to catch you before you two disappeared to make-out.”

The knowing look in Sue’s eyes caused Thea to stiffen.  They had been friends since grade school.  Thea had often wondered why the friendship had continued through high school and into college.  Sue was pretty and popular.  Her attention was flattering and brought Thea into the center of events.  Thea still helped Sue with her studies.  She’d even written papers for her friend.  Sometimes Thea wondered if being on the fringes of the in-crowd was worth the effort.  If she dropped Sue, where would another friend be found? Thea smiled.  There was Luke.

Thea closed the door and walked to her next room.  “Luke and I do more than make-out.  We talk about serious matters.”

“Sure you do.”  Sue grinned.  “Just wanted to let you know there’s a party in the guest lounge to celebrate Luke’s birthday.”

“He never mentioned one to me.”

Sue’s smile turned sly.  “For good reason.  Guess he didn’t want you to know today he turns seventeen.  Surprised me when I learned.  He looks and acts our age.”

Thea swallowed.  Luke was only seventeen.  She’d be twenty-two in November.  “But he’s a junior in college.  He’s pre-med.”

“Heard he’s a genius.  Double major, too.”  Sue stepped back.  “You two are quite the topic in the staff lounge.  Some of the girls call you a cradle-snatcher.  I told them if you’d known his age you would have cut him cold.”

Thea felt her face flame.  How could she have made such a fool of herself?  Luke was seventeen.  She could be in real trouble.  Everyone knew and laughed at her.  “Look, we’re just friends.  We talk about medicine and surgery.”

Sue arched a brow.  “With a few anatomy lessons thrown in.  Don’t blame you one bit.  I wouldn’t mind a night or two exploring his body.  He is one gorgeous hunk.  See you.”

Thea waited until Sue vanished down the rear stairs.  She quickly finished her rooms and fled to the staff sleeping quarters.  Tears stung her eyes.  Why hadn’t he told her before she’d become the staff’s joke of the summer?

She splashed water on her face.  Luke would be at the reflecting pool.  She intended to let him know how she felt about his deception.

Wednesday A Marriage Takes Two #MFRWHooks #BWLAuthor #Romance #Medical #Second Chance

For some great excerpts join the authors at #MFRWHooks here.  http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com Mine is found @https://wwweclecticwriter.blogspot.com and is A Marriage Takes Two friends find love

Blurb:

"This is medieval.” That’s Carrie’s response to the reading of her grandfather’s will. The money will allow her to provide for her ill mother and give her the chance to give up one of her full time jobs as a nurse. The money won’t be hers until she marries. This creates a dilemma. She has no time for dating and doesn’t know who would marry her until she thinks of her former best friend, Tony. But can she ask him? Two months later time is running out and she decides to take the plunge. Three years ago, Tony and his wife divorced. Last year he obtained custody or their child. When Carrie asks him to marry her he decides since this won’t be a real marriage, he can accept. Years ago, he loved Carrie but never said anything to her. Now burned, he doesn’t believe in love. To help her uncomplicate her life he agrees. Can Tony and Carrie get past the reason for the marriage and find love and make a home for his son?

Excerpt:

She shook her head. “Another job is the last thing I need. I already have two.”

“Why?”

She shrugged. “Necessity.”

“I don’t understand.”

“It’s a long story.” She sighed. “I shouldn’t have come.”

“What’s wrong? Sounds like you need a shoulder.”

The entire body, she thought. “You could say...It’s like this...I have a problem that needs a solution...It’s sort of...” Her throat closed. Maybe she should leave. Go home. Forget the plan. Find a new one. Except, he was her first, last, and only choice.

“Be glad to listen.” He patted her hand. “Are you saying in all these years, you haven’t found anyone else to listen?

I haven’t looked, she thought. There couldn’t be a replacement for Tony. She couldn’t tell him that. “I thought...Maybe you can help.”

“Be glad to try. Go ahead.”

A crash resounded. Carrie jumped. “I think you’re the one with the problem.”

“You could say that.” Tony rolled his eyes upward. “My son’s protesting his punishment for his latest series of pranks. He’s grounded with no TV and no phone.”

“What did he do?” She sat on one end of a shabby brown couch.

“Do you really want to know?”

She nodded. Hearing about Tony’s problems could give her time to gather her courage.

He slumped beside her. “He glued the sitter’s clothes together. She left in a huff.”

“Don’t blame her.” Carrie frowned. “I thought your son lived with his mother.”

“He did until July. She’s remarried…to one of the Brinkers. She and her new husband are on a world cruise honeymoon. They didn’t take Chad.”

His blue eyes were bleak. Was his pain for his son or himself? How badly had his failed marriage hurt him?  “Are you all right with the idea?”

He shrugged. “I’ve mixed feelings.”

His expression showed hurt and anger, not ones she’d consider mixed. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. It’s great having Chad here, but he’s angry about the divorce, about living here, about his mother’s new husband. Wasn’t a great summer. Even with him in school, there are problems.”

“Maybe I can help.”

“Don’t know how.” He winked. “I’m not without experience in dealing with angry kids. “Remember…”

“Yes, and don’t even mention the first time we met.”

“Or my black eye? Lord, it’s great to see you again. Why don’t you tell me why you came all this way?”

She ran her tongue over dry lips. She searched for an answer and couldn’t find one he would believe. If she asked him, he would think she was crazy.

Good grief, my thoughts are scrambled. He is too…too… male.

And your feelings for him haven’t changed.

“Carrie.”

The demand in his voice made her feel like a child facing an adult. “It’s...” What sounded like glass shattering brought her to her feet.

Chad!”

Saved, she thought. “Don’t you think you’d better see what he’s doing before he trashes the house?”

He raked his ebony curls with his fingers. “You’re right.” He headed to the door. “Promise you’ll stay ‘til I settle him. Then we’ll talk.”

“I’ll be here.”

She sank against the cushions. Maybe he would need the entire evening to deal with his son. This visit was an act of desperation. After all, it had been years. Maybe he’d changed.

She looked around the sparsely furnished living room. Most of the pieces looked like refugees from second-hand stores. What had gone wrong for him? He’d been on the fast track. He’d entered practice with one of the largest medical groups in Pittsburgh. From some of her classmates, she’d heard how wonderful he was, what a caring doctor he’d become, and how loyal he’d been to his wife and child. Had the end of his marriage caused him to turn his back on success? She hadn’t heard, and she hadn’t asked until two months ago. Her jobs had been in hospitals where he hadn’t been on staff.

Tuesday's Writer's Tip - Using Patterns in Stories #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Writing #Patterns

You've finished the opening scene of your book. Re-read it carefully. Is there something that can become a patternto help tie your book together. Something that can be used in other scenes, perhaps not word for word but the idea can be repeated. To demonstrate, I'll use the book that I've just begun writing

The main idea that I could use to form a pattern is the committee the characters are forming in the opening scene. The committee as formed in the opening scene is a vehicle for the nurses to use because some of the doctors at their hospital are less than competent. There is hope that this committee will do good.

The second scene again the committee is mentioned but the  focus is not on what the heroine thought would happen but on the fact nothing has changed. In other scenes in the book, the committee will be mentioned with many takes on what this means to the story.

Thus the committee becomes a pattern that flows throughout the book bringing various views and incidents.

Meandering On Monday with Janet Lane Walters with Reading, Writing and Thoughts #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing

Meander 1 - Reading - Back to Mary Jo Putney to reread the Lost Lord series until some new books pop up. Re-reading books is for me an interesting trip and also a learning process. I find things and little tricks in writing every time.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - A bit about the weather. It's getting colder but not by much. Temperatures remain mainly in the low seventire and the high sixties. There hasn't been a frost yet so the roses and other plants are still in bloom.

Meander 3 - Working on Committee of Angels. I will soon have to start discovering where the book will go next. Am approaching the first murder and turning suspicion on the heroine. Some twists and turns ahead.

In the center of the maze at an Adirondack resort lies a spring-fed pool. Legend says that if you look into the serene depths under a full moon, you’ll see the face of your true love. In this collection of four novellas, the magic of the Moon Pool touches the lives of eight people for whom love seems to be a dream that can never be reality:
Thea — who lost her one true love because she couldn’t bear the scorn of others.
Faith — who has given up on love in the face of responsibility.
Lynn— who settled for practicality when she yearned for poetry.
and
Cynthia — whose reputation for selfishness was no match for love.

Friday Amber Daulton is Visiting and Talking About Heroes, Heroines, villains #MFRWAuthor #Heroes #Heroines #Villains #Forever Winter

Heroes, Heroines, Villains. Which are your favorite to write?

I love writing about the heroes, especially when I’m in their POV. I don’t know why, but speaking as the male lead comes more easily to me at times than speaking as the female lead. Maybe it’s because my men are brassier and tougher than the women? But that’s not to say my ladies are weak—heck, no. They don’t take crap from anybody, least of all the heroes, but they typically aren’t as rough around the edges as the men are.

Heroes. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or plain imagination create the man you want every reader to love? Do they come before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?

My heroes usually come from my imagination, and I think of them at the same time as I’m coming up with the plot. I can’t have one without the other, so when I’m plotting a new story, the hero is already there. The foundation of his personality is already set, but I add in the details after I’m almost done with the plot.

Heroines. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or imagination create the woman you want the reader to root for? Do they appear before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?

Same with the heroes.

Villains or villainesses or an antagonist, since they don’t always have to be the bad guy or girl. They can be a person opposed to the hero’s or heroine’s obtaining their goal. How do you choose one?

Sometimes it’s hard to figure out who the villain is, or who should be the main villain. In my re-release, Forever Winter, one of the bad guys is an untimely snowstorm that’s threatening to ruin my heroine’s wedding day. Everything bad that could go wrong, does, and all these problems snowball (no pun intended) into a confrontation that should’ve happened years earlier.

What is your latest release? Who is the hero, heroine and or the villain?

I’ve recently received the right back to Forever Winter, my debut novella from 2012, and I’ve given it a makeover with a fresh edit and cover. Camden and Susanna are the main couple, and there’s more than one villain, but I won’t give too much away. Just know that the snowstorm is the least of their problems.

What are you working on now?

I have three books releasing this year. Forever Winter just came out a few weeks ago on October 5th. A Hero’s Heart (another re-release) will be live on November 2nd, and the brand new Into The Fire box set will be hitting the digital shelves on December 14th. As you can tell, I have a couple busy months ahead of me.

How can people find you?

I love to hear from readers. They can contact me through my website or on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.

Thursday's Opening Scene from Whispers From Yesteryear #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Romance #Reincarnation

The scream that sounded in her head caused her to stagger. Her legs refused to hold her erect. She slid to the ground. With a terror that matched her sister’s, through the link between them, she witnessed the destruction of the Long House. The faces of the enemy burned into her head.

"Not the children!" The scream caused the earth beneath her body to shudder.

*****

July 2000

"Not the children!"

Willow Carey jerked into a sitting position. Her heart thudded in her chest. Waves of terror flooded her thoughts. She gulped deep breaths of air.

She stared at the familiar surroundings and wondered why the bedroom seemed alien. Like a shroud, the sheet had twisted around her legs. She tugged it free. Her sleep shirt, soaked with perspiration, clung to her skin. She shook her head to dislodge the fragments of the nightmare that had awakened her. Terror, grief and rage had followed her into consciousness. What? Why?

Once her heart rate slowed, she reached for the alarm clock. Too late to go back to sleep and too early to get ready for work. As the effects of the adrenaline rush faded, her sense of uneasiness grew.

She hugged her knees. Once again, she had failed but she couldn’t remember who or how.

Moments later, she stood in the shower. Warm water washed away the sour smell of fear. The nightmare wasn’t new. Six years had passed since the last time the cry had jolted her awake. Always the same urgency and the same surge of emotions. No matter how hard she tried, she never remembered more than the cry.

She stepped from the shower. After pulling on a blue terry cloth robe, she stripped the bed and stuffed the damp sheets in the hamper.

What had triggered the dream? With the thoroughness of a pathologist seeking the cause of death, she examined the past few days and found no incident that could be called a trigger.

As she made the bed, she recalled the first time she’d dreamed. She’d been sixteen. She and her twin had been at Indian’s Sorrow visiting their aunt. Willow had always loved staying there. This time had been different. One memory lodged in her thoughts.

"Willow, come here. This is so neat." Brooke had opened the gate at the side of the garden.

Willow halted at the opening. She looked beyond her sister. "Get away from the edge."

"I’m fine." Brooke leaned forward. "The rocks look like a giant’s teeth. Come see."

"I can’t."

Brooke laughed. "Chicken."

"Something dreadful happened here."

Wednesday The Doctor's Dilemma #MFRWHooks #BWLAuthor @romance #Medical #infant twins

Join the authors at #MFRWHooks here http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com  for some great excerpts. Mine is found @https://wwweclecticwriter.blogspot.com and is from the Doctor's Dilemma. He's a rolling stone and she wants a settled life.

BLURB:

Take one doctor who’s made a career of temporary positions and avoiding commitment. Add a nurse who dreams of security and a settled life. Stir in infant twins bequeathed to him by his dead foster sister. Pour them into a small Texas town that wants the doctor to stay.

To Dr. Neal McKay, it’s a prescription for a dilemma.

EXCERPT:

“Did you forget we were coming?  What are you going to do about Molly and Todd?”

His gaze met hers. She saw confusion there. “Raise them, I guess.”

His answer brought her to a halt. For an instant, she felt sorry for him. He’d had little chance to refuse the responsibility. Then she remembered his lack of preparation.

Neal crossed his arms on his chest. He appraised the blonde. Tall, sexy as hell, but what was her agenda?  Her long braid switched like a lioness’ tail did as the beast prepared to spring.

Who was she?

He’d expected to find the twins in Emma Sanchez’s care, but he rather preferred this woman whose brilliant blue eyes matched her tee shirt. Her khaki shorts revealed a nice pair of legs.

Her accusations thundered. Her eyes flashed sparks of anger. Whoever she was, he was intrigued. She clamped her lips together and glared at him.

A pair of ear-piercing screams shattered the silence. Neal jumped.

The twins!  Were they ill?

At least he could handle illness. “What’s wrong with them?”

“I guess I scared them.” She knelt on the afghan and spoke in low, soothing tones. “It’s all right. I won’t yell again.” The cries died to whimpers.

His gaze focused on the woman. She definitely wasn’t the person he’d expected to accompany the twins. During their phone conversations, he’d envisioned Lena Greene as a short, dumpy woman. Nothing about the blonde’s appearance marked her as a social worker, a class of women he was well acquainted with. Since the day he’d entered the system at the age of three, he’d had too many encounters with the breed.

Officious, rigid, uncaring, along with a dozen other sterling attributes.

She didn’t fit that picture. Her blue eyes and her air of harassed martyrdom made him want to rescue her.

He held up his hands. “I surrender. I’m guilty of every charge. If I’d known you’d be waiting at the airport, I would have ignored the four major emergencies that kept me chained to the clinic. Welcome to Prairie, Ms. Greene.”

“I’m not Lena Greene.”

“And you’re definitely not Emma Sanchez. So, who are you?”

“Nora Harte. Lena asked me to deliver the twins.”

Her voice reminded him of brandy -- full-bodied and intoxicating.

She lifted one of the twins. “This is Molly.” She thrust the infant into his arms and returned for the second. “And this is Todd.”

She edged past them. The babies’ squirms grew stronger and he prayed he wouldn’t drop them.

“There’s an envelope on the coffee table with official papers,” she said. “Enjoy the children. I have to go. I’m due in Santa Fe tomorrow.”

She can’t leave!

He had no experience in the daily care and handling of babies. He had to find a way to keep her until Emma arrived without admitting how inept he felt.

“You’re leaving now?  Are you sure you want to head out this late?”

“There’s plenty of daylight left. When it gets too dark, I’ll find a motel.”

“Do you realize what desolate territory you’ll be crossing?  Towns and motels are far apart.”
