Meaandering on Mondaywith Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #writing #Thoughts #New Release

Meander 1 - New Release - Home Caring is a medical romancethat's just been released.  Abby Reid feels she’s been playing whack-a-problem for months. Her ex is behind on child support payments. Her angry teenage daughter. Her new business, a home care agency. All these areas vie for her attention. She believes she has solved the last major problem with the agency by firing her clinical supervisor, but this adds to her chores. Hoping the new patient, a private pay one will boost her spirits and bring success, she agrees to work the weekend day shift rather than call another agency and find the case being stolen. Will the new patient provide a break in the negative events in her life?

Doctor Jeff Grayson is the in-coming patient. He has been in town and working with his friend for a month. Jeff is a master of many things. At fifteen he started college and has degrees in English, Architecture and Computers. All this before medical school. He and his Harley met with a car and came out the losers. He’s a patient with casts on both legs and one on his left arm. Though his doctor recommends rehab, Jeff has a different idea. He is going home. Abby’s home health care agency is recommended. During their initial meeting, Jeff is snowed by pain medication and he falls in love with her voice. He has no idea of her appearance but he can dream and Abby is the object. When he wakes and meets her, will his dreams change?

Meander 2 - Thoughts - I do not understand the Supreme Court. Their decisions in the past few days puzzle me. They do not listen to what the majority of the people of this country believe but some twisted ideas belonging to a few people. I wish I knew what could be done to make them more responsive to the voices of the people.

Adriana Kraft is Visiting and Talking about Heroes, Heroines and Villains #MFRWAuthor #Writing #Heroes #Heroines #Vilains

1.    Heroes, Heroines, Villains. Which are your favorite to write?

At our house, this is a trick question – my husband and I co-author our books under our pen name, Adriana Kraft. He loves writing about women and often takes the lead, especially in terms of their character, their quirks. I often fill in some of their inner world and thoughts, but for a guy, he’s amazingly good at that, too.

Heroes? I suspect we’ve never written a hero who doesn’t bear at least a smidgen of resemblance to my husband. Hence I’m in love with all of them and find them easy to write and edit. It might go without saying that we don’t write what might be called heavy duty alpha males – our men are all tender and sensitive, but still fully capable of many alpha qualities when the situation calls for it.

Villains – oh, we both have such fun creating villains. I will say it took us a while to create a truly evil one – and especially, to take the step of offing a villain as part of the book finale.

2.    Heroes. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or plain imagination create the man you want every reader to love? Do they come before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?

LOL, I gave away part of that answer above! We typically fasten on our heroine first and work from there – who will fit for this woman? What will draw her to him, what will stand in the way? What occupation, what personality. Looks come later, and yes, sometimes photos or famous people. For one of the books I’m featuring tomorrow, a younger Richard Gere (think Pretty Woman) would be the perfect image for the 40-something hero in the May-September romance.

3.    Heroines. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or imagination create the woman you want the reader to root for? Do they appear before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?

Anything can trigger a heroine. We definitely use photos here, and my husband often scours the web and comes up with several options from which we select one, not only for her looks, but for the expression in her pose. Photos help anchor not only our physical descriptions but also our hero’s responses. In tomorrow’s featured books, we once met a female racehorse trainer who is the model for one of the heroines, and a female lawyer we knew served as the basis for another one.

4.    Villains or villainesses or an antagonist, since they don’t always have to be the bad guy or girl. They can be a person opposed to the hero’s or heroine’s obtaining their goal. How do you choose one? How do you make them human?

For the most part, it’s only our romantic suspense books that possess an actual villain, always engaged in some kind of criminal activity. Though we both had  ample opportunity to work with such persons in our professional careers, we’ve never based a villain on any specific person. But my husband is a trained criminologist, and his expertise on the inner workings of the criminal mind definitely informs our depiction of our villains and what drives them.

5.    What is your favorite book?

Two answers. For me, any of the Jane Austen novels, which I (like my college English professor) re-read every so often. Among those, Emma tops my list, chiefly for the scene towards the end in which she finds the courage to make an about face and own her feelings.

For him – he doesn’t have a favorite book and could never count up all the books he’s read and loved. Also, he never goes back and re-reads a book. As a kid, he loved Johnny Tremain and the Zane Grey books. His current favorites are historical fiction grounded in real people and events, especially those focused on Celtic beliefs and practices.

6.    Who are your favorite authors?

Far too many to list them all, both within and outside the romance genre. Erotic romance? Authors Lisabet Sarai and Kymmie Carlton, especially. Currently my Rom Com favorite is Emily Henry, for her witty characters and for turning romance tropes on their heads with her plots. Mainstream? Anything Geraldine Brooks writes, and that goes for both me and my husband; also C.W. Gortner and T. J. Klune. Historical romance? Both of us would list Cathie Dunn, Melanie Karsak, Nancy Jardine, Helen Hollick, Annie Whitehead, Gemma Lawrence, and Elizabeth St. John, among others.

7.    What is your latest release? Who is the hero, heroine and or the villain?

I’m going to cop to one of the books we’re promoting tomorrow, since it’s on sale now. Detour Ahead, set in the world of thoroughbred racing, features a high powered lawyer grieving the death of her father. Her best friend sends her to a California time share both to rest and to have a new case to solve – someone’s been threatening the racehorses at the time share wrangler’s ranch. A rape victim in her early teens, Tracy has never recovered, never permitted herself intimacy with a man, always kept her deepest feelings hidden. Our hero is based on the wrangler we met on our own trip to a time share in the foothills north of San Diego where we spent two weeks, got inspired for this story, and started writing. The villain? I don’t dare share a spoiler, so I’ll just say he’s in financial trouble and being blackmailed by probably the true villain of the story.

8.    What are you working on now?

We have a number of irons in the fire. Several finished manuscripts have been on a back burner for a while, and we’re gradually picking them up and thoroughly editing them for release. At the top of the list is catching up with the married pair who are the stars of Swinging Games, our erotic romance series set in the swing lifestyle. We’re crafting a road trip for them and having a great time picking out favorite spots to send them. Which leads me to say we’ve never set a book in a place we haven’t spent time in personally Well, except for our newest release, set in Roman occupied Wales and then Rome. More on that next month!

New Release - Committee of Angels #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #medical #suspense #hospital #doctors #nurses

The article passed around the table on a hot August night. “Five to ten percent of the nation’s doctors are so impaired or incompetent they cannot or should not practice medicine.” The nurses at Bradley Memorial thought they had them all. That night they formed a group they called The Committee of Angels.

Nearly a year has passed and Laura Bancroft wonders why little has been done to change things. She also wonders about some of the nurses fitting the pattern. Laura has three doctors on her list of incompetents. She seldom meets with the other members and several of the others are upset with her. When her ex-husband joins the medical staff, she realizes she still has feelings for him. One of her list of doctors dies after emergency surgery and Laura finds her suspected since she was assigned to the doctor. She must deal with suspicions, her feelings for her ex. Then a second on her list commits suicide and speaks of blackmail.

Can Laura learn the truth of who is responsible before she faces arrest?

2019 Book Hooks

EXCERPT:
. Before she had a chance to check the monitor, the loud rapping sounded again. She opened the door.
A tall man she recognized brushed past her. “Mr. Quinn, is something wrong?”
“Where’s Rob?”
“In his office. I’ll let him know you’re here.” Her employer’s attorney’s green eyes flashed. Anger or fear? His hair looked as if someone had run fingers through the thick dark hair.
“Don’t bother.” He strode toward the bedroom wing.
Janine watched him rush away. Was there trouble at the movie studio?
Tammy rubbed her face on Janine’s shoulder. She patted the child’s back. “To bed.” She entered the hall.
She heard Nate shouting. Janine sighed. Though from the first time she’d seen Nate Quinn, she’d felt an attraction but she knew there was no chance for any relationship. He still grieved for his wife who had died a year ago. An impossible dream. There were too many tangled threads to unravel.
Tammy popped her thumb into her mouth. “Bear.” Janine entered the bedroom wing.
Rob’s office door stood open. Nate Quinn’s near shouts flowed into the hall. “What am I going to do? I can’t lose him to that damned disease.”
Though she shouldn’t remain and eavesdrop, Janine froze in place. Curiosity gripped like an iron glove. Did he mean his eight year old son was ill?
Her arms tightened around Tammy. She should leave but she had to know what made him sound angry and defeated.
“He’s been tired lately so two days ago, I took him to see Andi. She ran some tests and called me around noon, wanted Davey admitted to the hospital. She asked Dr. Chou to see him.”
“Did you?” Rob asked.
“Yah. I just left him there and fled in a panic. I can’t endure anything going wrong.”
Janine edged along the all and stared at the open door. Nate Quinn looked ready to collapse or cry.
“Dr. Chou is excellent,” Rob said.
“That’s what Andi said.”
“What’s the diagnosis?”
“Leukemia.”

Those words brought a rush of tears to Janine’s eyes. Tammy wiggled. Before the little girl cried, Janine loosened her hold and stepped into the child’s bedroom. Janine’s knees buckled. She drew deep breaths to calm her raging thoughts. She bit her lip and focused on her charge.

2019 Book Hooks

Excerpt: A bit of the villains

The man Jens believed was their quarry bellowed an order. An older woman scurried toward what Jens believed was the barn. Moments later she dragged a young woman into the opening. The girl twisted and turned trying to escape. Two men grabbed her and half-carried her forward. Jens’ hands clenched as he fought to control the urge to help.
Petan grasped the young woman’s arms. Her scarlet lines faded. When his released his grip she slumped on the ground.
Jens’ stomach lurched. He fought the urge to spew the contents of his gut.
One of the older woman knelt beside the fallen. “She lives.”
“Return her to the barn and feed her,” Petan ordered. “She must be ready to serve me in three days.”
Jens’ eyes widened. Petan’s lines had lost much of their darkness. He edged away and halted covering his mouth to hide a gasp. The air shimmered. A tall, slender man with hip-length pale hair appeared. The men and women near the fires lay face down on the ground. Petan knelt at the stranger’s feet.
“Greetings, Master,” Petan said.
The alien placed his hands on Petan’s shoulders. Petan screamed. Jens’ mouth gaped. Petan’s brightened lines of fire grew darker and thicker. The stranger drew his minion to his feet.” Well done, my faithful slave. Continue to gather fire for me. With enough power others of my kin will join me and reap the harvest.”
Jens shuddered. How could such a man as this stranger be defeated? He felt powerless. Would destroying Petan save the people of the land?

Slowly he crawled to where Lasara waited at the foot of the tree. They made their way back to the steeds, mounted and raced back to camp.

Friday Frank Talabar is visiting and talking about his latest release #MFRWauthor #BWLPublishing, #Ghosts #Victoria BC

1. Tell me about your latest release? Genre?

The Joining, Book one in the Ainsworth Chronicles. Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Thriller.

Basically you've got ghosts, hunky FBI agents, ancient curses, the mob, and a crazy old psychic lady claiming you've invited her, before young boys begin disappearing and weird things begin happening to the spirits and the druggies trapped in the sewers. Welcome to Victoria, BC and Carol's first day undercover at the Fairmount Empress Hotel in the most haunted city in North America.
PS. They serve great tea and the scones are to die for. Literally.

2. Where did the idea arise?

Well, from my son Rory, actually. He's a chef at the Boom and Batten restaurant in Victoria and was working at Nautical Nellies before that. When I looked into Victoria I found out it was the most haunted city in North America. So it twigged my interest. I found out where he worked had a haunted kitchen. Which he didn't seem to mind, "yes dad, pots sometimes swing on the walls and go sliding across the counter when I'm there alone." I'd have quit in an instant.
But I also found out that there's a time vortex in Victoria, on Shelbourne and Hillside for those interested. Now my muse is talking to me and asking the main question that twigs my writers mind. What If?
I also found a few claims of ghosts in the Fairmont Empress Hotel and chatted with the staff. I'm a big one for asking questions and both staff said they had ghost experiences by people staying there. The strangest one is this: the doorman said one couple told him that they had a ghost in their locked room when they were gone and the wife's clothes had been taken out and ghost clothing put in her suitcase.
I asked, "Ghost clothing?"
"Yes," he said, "really old clothing." True Story.
So, my muse has gone off on a tangent, "what if there's a ghost walking around today?"

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

A lot, the more I researched, the more ghost stories I came across. Yes, it was easy to be distracted, but that usually lead to more questions. Like why is there a Wall of Wonders down in the sewers and claims of Satanic cults?
Usually the research leads me to more and more questions and ideas.

4. How long did you take to write the book?

About eight months. Unfortunately I also manage an automotive shop and work full time, which interferes with how much I can write. So once I begin writing I can really crank out a lot and I usually will write whole plot lines out and then switch to another plot line after that.

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?
I'm a Cancer, born on June 21st, the cusp as well. Some refer me to Gemini. What I know is that I find the moon calling me to write as it ascends in the night. I have been writing since high school. Took a creative writing course that really trained me to write subconsciously.

6. Do you write in a number of genres of stick to one?

No, my publisher would like me to stick to one, but I write in several. As I find my muse doesn't like to be confined. I've done, romance, comedy, fantasy, erotica, science fiction and literary to name a few.

7. Where can you be found?

My Website is
https://wordpress.com/stats/day/franktalaberpublishedauthor.wordpress.com

I'm also on facebook.
https://www.facebook.com/FrankTalaber/

And I have a short story page.

Also I'm on Linked In and Twitter. Oh, I shouldn't forget GoodReads as well.

Of all the Grantley Gang, she is the only one not married. She tries to resign from the hospital and is persuaded to take a month of her accumulated vacation time first. Avoiding her five friends, Megan rushes from town, not knowing or caring where she is going. Escaping the ghosts of the dead is her primary goal. During a blinding snowstorm, she crashes into the life of Dave Malloy MD.

Dave is a Virgo a traveling doctor going from assignment to assignment over the country. He's decided two things. One is to settle and gather moss. The other is to find his sister lost years ago when they were sent to two different foster homes. He has found her and vows to rescue her from an abusive situation. When Megan lands against a tree at the house where he is staying, he finds her very attractive. But can he act on this attraction when he must care for her after the accident and his decision she is a patient?

Together, they must find his sister and hope they aren't too late.

EXCERPT:

Megan groaned. Her head throbbed and her body ached. Had the immovable object stepped into her path? What had happened? She sought to gather the fragmented memories and failed.
Large hands clasped hers. A deep voice called her miss. Was she? A thought converged. She was the only one not married. The voice called for her to wake up. Why? She feared opening her eyes to find the man wasn’t real.
She freed her hands and ran them along arms that seemed real. So did the shoulders. As she tried to sit up, she pulled him toward her. Her lips touched his. He was real. Was he hers?
His kiss synched with hers. His tongue slid over her opened mouth. Tongues touched, tangled and explored. Her body vibrated with sensations both familiar and new. Had she found her destiny? He pulled back.
Megan found her voice. “Are you my Valentine?”
He eased her back onto soft pillows. “Just your rescuer. I’m sorry the motion sensor light caused you to lose control of the car.”
Megan gingerly touched the sore spot on her head and found a hematoma. “Accident?”
His dark eyes held concern. “You chose a bad day to travel. The snow came fast and heavy. I think you were pulling into the driveway. The light flashed. You lost control and plowed into an oak. I pulled you from the wreck.”
Her mind refused to focus on what he said. She really wanted to know who he was. She stared at her dream come true. Dark hair, dark eyes and muscles. The ache in her head cried for relief. “Concussion?”
“Yes.”
“How long was I out?”
“Twenty minutes.”
“Do you think there’s a skull fracture? Do I need medical help?”

Handcuffs and trouble…

Clover wants Van Gogh. Bad. He's the hottest ink artist at Wicked Brand and makes her blood race. Trouble is, he hasn't noticed her. She's determined to change that. Starting with letting him get under her skin—literally. But then the tattoo consultation goes a little deeper than expected.
In a night of wicked hot fun, she brings out his sexy beast. Talk about a major transformation. Soon they're sneaking into the shop after hours to play with his chair and breaking in his new handcuffs. But when their differences start to arise, she's not sure where all this hot sex will lead...
