Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading - Just finished a Mary Balogh story that I hadn't read before. Interesting and like her usual stories. Characters have choices to be madethat are ahrd.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - Well, the Supreme court has invented  something to make them appear more honest. I have my doubts since there are no consequences. They still believe they are above the law that rules every other person who works for the government. There's no wonder since most of them face right,.

Meander 3 - Writing- Have three more chapters to rough draft on Keltoi and then I will begin rough drafting The Horror Writer's Demise.

Sanctuarys Ending is featured as Sunday's Book #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #fantasy #romance

In the beginning the goddesses Sola and Luna shone on their sister bringing forth all life. Erda grew rich and fat and the people loved the Three. Some began to lust for the treasures buried beneath Erda’s skin. She offered them freely but men began to dig and plunder her riches. Sola and Luna hated what they saw. With floods, winds, fires and earthquakes they punished the children Erda had raised.

For five hundred years has passed since a group of the goddesses followers retreated behind the Gap. Almost twenty years ago, five children were born. They were tested for gifts of the goddess and to enter training. One became a Healer, one a Singer, one a Sensitive and one an Elder. David’s test was conducted by a Teacher who hated him and he was assigned to the lowest class and became a shepherd. Though he accepts this, he is angry especially when some of the talents begin to emerge. He has healed animals and can sense the emotions of others. The five had always talked about leaving the sanctuary.

On the evening of the spring equinox, the four are to be inducted into their specialties. The Elder trainee among them has plans to leave. He invites David to join them. David’s enemy offers to accompany them and is given permission. What will they find when they enter the world? A Seer gives a forewarning. Of the six only four will return. Who will be left behind and why? Can David prove he has at least a touch of all of the talents?

Kate Hill is Visiting and Talking about her latest release #MFRWAuthor #Vampire #romance #artist #history

Tell me about your latest release or the book you wish to feature? Genre?

Dominique is a short vampire story about an artist who decides he's been lonely for too long and wants to find a companion. He meets someone and falls in love fast, but she has secrets that prove to be dangerous to him.

2. Where did the idea arise?

I wanted to write a short vampire love story that has elements of romance and horror. While writing Dominique it felt like a fairy tale.

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

It has a historical setting, so it took some research about that, and I particularly looked at the history of miniatures because as an artist, Dominique specialized in those.

4. How long did you take to write the book?

Most short stories take a week or two to write the first draft, but it can take months to years to polish them. Dominique underwent several changes, but altogether it probably took about three months to reach the final story.

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?

I've been writing since I was a child. When I was about sixteen I decided to start submitting work for publication, and it took about ten years after that for my first story to get accepted. Not surprisingly, it was a short, erotic vampire story. It's about twenty-seven years later, and I still love to write vampire stories! My sign is Libra.

6. Do you write in a number of genres of stick to one?

I mainly write romance in a variety of subgenres, but sometimes I also write horror.

7. Where on the internet can you be found?

I love to connect with readers and writers online. I can be found at:

Gemstones is featured today wiht Thursday's Opening Scene #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Romance #Regency #Jewels

Miss Nicola. Miss Nicola." The whisper woke Nicola Gordon. Like wasps around ripe fruit, tales of native uprisings swarmed in her thoughts. She groped beneath the pillow for the knife she kept there. The girls. She had to protect her sisters. "Miss Nicola, wake up."

"Who?" She tried to keep fear from clogging her voice. "Sarad." "What are you doing here? Where's Papa?" Just two days ago, she had seen her father and his young native assistant off on a buying trip. Fear gripped her spine. The knife fell from her fingers.

 "Your father. You must come."

"I can't leave my sisters. What if they wake and find me gone?"

"They will be safe. Your papa needs you. We were set upon by thugs and he was hurt. I found a safe place for him to stay until I am sure we were not followed."

Nicola pushed aside the netting that enclosed the bed. She found her shoes and grabbed a dark cloak. Her heart thudded in her chest. Though she and Sarad had engaged in mischief years ago, her childhood friend had become sober and responsible. So had she. "Where is he?"

"The place is not far." He slid open the door to the verandah.

Nicola followed him to the gate in the compound wall. The aroma of wet earth rose from the garden, but outside the gates, the recent rains had failed to mask the scent of exotic flower and spices of the odor of garbage.  The absence of the moon created an ominous darkness. She hurried through alleys and along streets beside her silent guide. Her thoughts conjured a thousand tragedies. She stumbled. A groan escaped.

Sarad gripped her arm. "Be silent as the tiger stalking prey."

His warning chilled her. Who knew what would happen to an Englishwoman caught in the streets at night. Ahead, she saw the looming shadow cast by one of the city's many temples built to honor one of India's multitude of gods. Why had they come here? Sarad pulled her into a dark passageway that led into the temple. Their passing stirred the dust of the ages, musty and dank. Finally, they emerged in a torch-lit room. She followed her friend to a recessed alcove. "Papa!" The blood-stained bandages around his chest and head alarmed her. "Papa, oh, Papa." She knelt on the stone floor beside him. His dark eyes were unfocused. His skin felt hot.

"The eye. Siva. The eye."

 "I don't understand."

"Nicola. Must warn. Must tell."

 "She is here, Sahib Gordon."

Nicola gripped her father's hand. The flickering torchlight revealed his pain-filled features. "Papa, I will take you home and see to your wounds."

He took a shuddering breath. "Must leave Calcutta."

"Where will we go?" She couldn't think of leaving. Calcutta was home.

"To England. Ian Grey will send an escort." He gasped a breath. "Your grandmother and Denmere. Old Earl dead. Marry the new. Distant cousin."

His words shocked her nearly as much as her memories. "My grandmother did not protect Mama. I don't want to marry and live with strangers." Why was he saying this? He would get better and until then, she could care for her sisters. For ten years, since her mother's death, this had been the case.

His fingers tightened around hers. "You must. Danger for you. For sisters." He struggled to sit up. "Your knowledge. Gems."

Fun mix of history and the present woven into a love story. It left me anxious to see if past wrongs could be set right.

Past lives mingle with those of the present in this tale of love and revenge. The story that began with two sisters named Willow kept me reading to see if the whispers from yesteryear would be enough to save their modern day descendants. Throw in a second chance romance and realistic characters for a fun read.

Excerpt:

"Not the children!"

Willow Carey jerked into a sitting position. Her heart thudded in her chest. Waves of terror flooded her thoughts. She gulped deep breaths of air.

She stared at the familiar surroundings and wondered why the bedroom seemed alien. Like a shroud, the sheet had twisted around her legs. She tugged it free. Her sleep shirt, soaked with perspiration, clung to her skin. She shook her head to dislodge the fragments of the nightmare that had awakened her. Terror, grief and rage had followed her into consciousness. What? Why?

Once her heart rate slowed, she reached for the alarm clock. Too late to go back to sleep and too early to get ready for work. As the effects of the adrenaline rush faded, her sense of uneasiness grew.

She hugged her knees. Once again, she had failed but she couldn’t remember who or how.

Moments later, she stood in the shower. Warm water washed away the sour smell of fear. The nightmare wasn’t new. Six years had passed since the last time the cry had jolted her awake. Always the same urgency and the same surge of emotions. No matter how hard she tried, she never remembered more than the cry.

She stepped from the shower. After pulling on a blue terry cloth robe, she stripped the bed and stuffed the damp sheets in the hamper.

What had triggered the dream? With the thoroughness of a pathologist seeking the cause of death, she examined the past few days and found no incident that could be called a trigger.

As she made the bed, she recalled the first time she’d dreamed. She’d been sixteen. She and her twin had been at Indian’s Sorrow visiting their aunt. Willow had always loved staying there. This time had been different. One memory lodged in her thoughts.

"Willow, come here. This is so neat." Brooke had opened the gate at the side of the garden.

Willow halted at the opening. She looked beyond her sister. "Get away from the edge."

"I’m fine." Brooke leaned forward. "The rocks look like a giant’s teeth. Come see."

"I can’t."

Brooke laughed. "Chicken."

"Something dreadful happened here."

"And I thought I was the one with the imagination and you were the logical one." Brooke spun around. "I love this place.”

The Rivalry Part 2 is featured today at Tuesday's Writer's Tip #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Rivalry Plot #Phase 2

The characters who are rivals have been shown in the opening segment of the plot. They need to be shown as having equal strengths and weaknesses. During the second plase they should be shown in several battles to win the prize. Using their strengths and weaknesses, they look to be perhaps in a tie. This rivalry must build to each encounter raising the stakes as they head to the conclusion.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #reading #writing #thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading - Read two Balogh's Regency romances. She really gives ehr characters hard choices to make. Enjoyed both stories.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - Frustrating times for those who believe the government should work well. The Repubs are in such turmoil they can't get anything done. Much of this is cesntered around their ideas. They have chosen not to get alone and stick together as a party. There seems to be several factions though not large are vocal and often not very smart. Some are holding out for losing and I sure hope when the election time comes they are shown their choices have been wrong. Perhaps they will lose every seat in Congress and a new aprty will arise. I have been registered to vote since 21. That was the age in those days. I registered as an Independant and voted for the best person who fit my ideas regardless of party. Gradually over the years this became harder to vote for those who were Repubs and gradually, there were so few who held any ideals I could accept. It is to the point now, unless there's a complete overthrow of the current Repubs I won't be able to find one who can work well with others.

Meander 2 - Writing - By the end of the month, I'll finish the rough draft of Keltoi and will start working on The Horror Writer's Demise. Just a bit more research to do here.

Books by Ann Fowler is featured on Saturday's Blurbs #MFRWAuthor #memoir #Central America #Humanitarian work #Honduras

Laughter, sadness, empathy, outrage. Canadian Anne Hamilton Fowler appeared to have it all. However, life is not always as idyllic as it seems and at age twenty a series of events almost destroyed her. Emerging from the wreckage she reinvented herself, started over, and proceeded to live on the edge with a risk-taking lifestyle. Then in 1993, an event experienced during a trip to Central America changed everything.

I’ve Worn Many Hats” is an inspirational read that demonstrates our human frailties, one’s ability to survive personal adversity, and how we can learn to forgive both ourselves and others. It is a story of redemption.

Anne Fowler is a retired Canadian who divides the year between her Haliburton summer cottage and Central America. This memoir is her first book and all proceeds will go to support Anne’s ongoing humanitarian work in Honduras.
