His band of Riders travels to a village on the edge of the desert. A challenge to see who has the trading advantage is called for. The duel ends in a tie. He is on his way back to the desert when a man from a different troop speaks of young girls being kidnapped. Learning and freeing them becomes his goal. Lasara joins him during the quest.
Somehow, they must face the renegades and rescue the young women.
Excerpt: A bit of the villains
The man Jens believed was their quarry bellowed an order.
An older woman scurried toward what Jens believed was the barn. Moments later
she dragged a young woman into the opening. The girl twisted and turned trying
to escape. Two men grabbed her and half-carried her forward. Jens’ hands
clenched as he fought to control the urge to help.
Petan grasped the young woman’s arms. Her scarlet lines
faded. When his released his grip she slumped on the ground.
Jens’ stomach lurched. He fought the urge to spew the
contents of his gut.
One of the older woman knelt beside the fallen. “She
lives.”
“Return her to the barn and feed her,” Petan ordered. “She
must be ready to serve me in three days.”
Jens’ eyes widened. Petan’s lines had lost much of their
darkness. He edged away and halted covering his mouth to hide a gasp. The air
shimmered. A tall, slender man with hip-length pale hair appeared. The men and
women near the fires lay face down on the ground. Petan knelt at the stranger’s
feet.
“Greetings, Master,” Petan said.
The alien placed his hands on Petan’s shoulders. Petan
screamed. Jens’ mouth gaped. Petan’s brightened lines of fire grew darker and
thicker. The stranger drew his minion to his feet.” Well done, my faithful
slave. Continue to gather fire for me. With enough power others of my kin will
join me and reap the harvest.”
Jens shuddered. How could such a man as this stranger be
defeated? He felt powerless. Would destroying Petan save the people of the
land?
Slowly he crawled to where Lasara waited at the foot of
the tree. They made their way back to the steeds, mounted and raced back to
camp.

Very intriguing excerpt, Janet!
Good job on making me not like your villains. Hoping you have something horrible planned for them.
This dude is clearly the big boss villain, and how to defeat him is a big part of the story's problem.
Loved the first few of these books. This one looks even better
