When you sit down to write a book you are building a story. There are the motivation and reaction units but the important thing in a story are the scenes. Each of your scenes must have at least one purpose.
1. to establish character - To do this you must show the character's actions and reactions. They must be in agreement with their motives. Doing this gives a scene life. This is the who, the what and the why.
2.to establish place - this is the descriptive part of the story. where is the character in the world showing the characters interacting with the where is important. A character will act differently in a home, a jail or in the wild. This is an important part of developing a story. This also gives information the reader needs to know.
2 to further the plot. if you ignore the plot, the story will only be a set of scenes that aren't drawn together for a reason. The plot is this. Plot is the character or characters with a goal in mind and an end they want so each scene must bring them closer or further from the goal.
