Tuesday's Writer's Tip - Black and White or Gray #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Writing #Plot ##Black or White #Gray

What we tend to do is try to fit everyone and every action into black or white. The good guys or the bad guys. It's easier to root for the hero and this works well in action stories and how we all want to root for the good guys to defeat the bad ones. While this can make for an exciting story after awhile, reading this kind of story again and again becomes boring. That brings us to shades of Gray.

Making the hero of the story being less that perfect adds to his character. Making the villian have some good traits adds a bit of depth to a story. I used this in one of my stories by having the villain have a deep though obsessive love for his mother and also his willing to volunteer. This added depth to his character and also made the other characters not see what he war really like. So build a bit of a flaw into your characters be the heroes, heroines or villains. Those shades of gray will add depth to the story and make the characters battles stronger.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading - Been reading more of Anne Perry's William Monk series. The Victorian age is a fascinating place and the stories are well written and hold the interest.

Meander 2 Thoughts - The Christmas Tree is finally up and the timehas come to start putting on the several hundred ornaments including all the dragons. Cookie baking will start soon and I enjoy that. Not making as many cookies this year. We really don't need them. Peanut butter with Kisses, ginger snaps, the new interesting cookies and probably some brownies. This is a busy time of year. At least the stockings are done, all but socks to add to three.

Meander 2 - Writing - Still working on the rough draft of Creative Dreams or what ever I decide to call the story. Am up to chapter 3. At this time of year finding a bit of time is hard but I manage to write at lease several hundred words every day.

Sunday's Book Sanctuary's Ending

In the beginning the goddesses Sola and Luna shone on their sister bringing forth all life. Erda grew rich and fat and the people loved the Three. Some began to lust for the treasures buried beneath Erda’s skin. She offered them freely but men began to dig and plunder her riches. Sola and Luna hated what they saw. With floods, winds, fires and earthquakes they punished the children Erda had raised.

For five hundred years has passed since a group of the goddesses followers retreated behind the Gap. Almost twenty years ago, five children were born. They were tested for gifts of the goddess and to enter training. One became a Healer, one a Singer, one a Sensitive and one an Elder. David’s test was conducted by a Teacher who hated him and he was assigned to the lowest class and became a shepherd. Though he accepts this, he is angry especially when some of the talents begin to emerge. He has healed animals and can sense the emotions of others. The five had always talked about leaving the sanctuary.

On the evening of the spring equinox, the four are to be inducted into their specialties. The Elder trainee among them has plans to leave. He invites David to join them. David’s enemy offers to accompany them and is given permission. What will they find when they enter the world? A Seer gives a forewarning. Of the six only four will return. Who will be left behind and why? Can David prove he has at least a touch of all of the talents?

Friday Adriana Kraft is visiting and Talking about Heroes, Heroines and Villains #MFRWAuthor #Writing #heroines #criinologist

1.    Heroes, Heroines, Villains. Which are your favorite to write?

I think I most enjoy writing heroines. My husband and I co-author erotic romance under this pen name, so he often delves into our male characters more, and I love taking on the role of our heroines to bring them to life. I find that especially true when it comes to writing black moments, that sudden realization when a heroine faces a desperate choice. I often reach back to some of my own experiences – having been engaged four times, married twice, and divorced once, I’ve had a few heartbreaks and difficult choices. I love reaching inside for what drives the heroine and pulling the reader into her inner world.

2.    Heroes. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or plain imagination create the man you want every reader to love? Do they come before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?

All of the above, and then some. A photo, a chance encounter, even a friend or two… and I’m certain we have one or more heroes who bear at least some resemblance to my husband. After all, if I’m going to live in the heroine’s skin while we’re writing, it’s easier to fall in love with the hero if I’ve already done so! That being said, we also write alpha heroes, bad boys, familiar tropes almost nothing like my husband. For both heroes and heroines, we usually have broad strokes of a plot before the characters emerge, and we spend a lot of time together getting to know them and their backstory, much of which never makes it directly onto the page.

3.    Heroines. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or imagination create the woman you want the reader to root for? Do they appear before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?

Again, all of the above. My favorite story about finding a heroine happened several years back. We lived in Norther Minnesota and were driving US2 across northern Wisconsin after visiting family. The highway follows the main street through Superior, WI, complete with lots of traffic lights and parking along the side of the road. We had to stop behind a contractor’s van that had double parked and wait for traffic to pass before we could get around it. The back doors of the van were open, revealing painting supplies, ladders, etc. Before we could pass it, a tall worker approached it, dressed in painters white coveralls. It wasn’t until the worker reached the back of the van that we realized it was a woman. Our surprise morphed quickly into the heroine of The Painter is  lady, which we set in the same town.

4.     Villains or villainesses or an antagonist, since they don’t always have to be the bad guy or girl. They can be a person opposed to the hero’s or heroine’s obtaining their goal. How do you choose one? How do you make them human?

I’m going to cop to my husband’s role on this one. Not all our stories have villains, but when they do, the main inspiration is his. He’s a trained criminologist, so inner details about how their minds work, how they carry out their evil deeds, what drives them, what they might do next—all these choices start with him, and then we process the scenes together as we develop the story. In several of our romantic suspense stories, we’ve written scenes from the villain’s point of view, sometimes revealing who he is, sometimes not.

5.    What is your latest release? Who is the hero, heroine and or the villain?

We’ve just released a short erotic romance holiday story. A Reluctant Santa. No villain in this one, just a cautious, practical pair of fifty-year-olds who are a tad relationship phobic. Carol Hawkins manages a retail outlet in the fashion industry and lost her husband a few years before our story opens. She has yet to meet anyone who sparks even a flutter of interest. Cliff Rutgers, who runs a sporting goods store, hasn’t sought a serious relationship since his divorce several years back. We had fun watching these two characters fight their resistance and take slow, careful steps before they finally let loose and turn up the heat.

6.    What are you working on now?

Two projects, actually, as well as re-editing a previously pubbed series that will begin releasing in the spring. We’re nearly finished creating a reader magnet – a short story that will be free to readers who sign up for our newsletter. We’ve sent a pair of mid-life swingers to a free week in Las Vegas to see what adventures they can discover. That one will release sometime in January.

The second has been percolating for years. Both of us have Celtic roots and are very interested in Celtic history and spirituality. We’ve also been reading widely on the UK during the era of Roman occupation. The upcoming two-book series opens during the Roman occupation, when a Roman Centurion captures a young Welsh woman named Seren and gives her to his wife as a slave. We also love paranormal elements, so this woman has been gifted with the sight and an ability to telepathically communicate with the young daughter she’s forced to leave behind when the Centurion moves Seren and his family back to Rome. Book two focuses on two of Seren’s descendants in the present day and her efforts from the place between worlds to bring them together so she can move on.

8.     Who are your favorite authors?

Probably each of us would answer this differently, but since I get to write the interview, here are mine. I’m a huge Jane Austen fan and have re-read all six novels more times than I can count. Emma is my favorite of those, because of that moment when she’s walking around the garden with Mr. Knightley and has to make a decision. My kind of moment! I’ve re-read Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale a couple times, even though I only came across it in 2017. I love it for the bravery of all its main characters, for its brilliant construction weaving back and forth between eras, and for the role of secrecy, both that of the characters, and the secrets the author withholds from us until the very end. My newest favorite is anything by Emily Henry, but especially Book Lovers, because it turns so many tropes upside down. I’m also quite enamored with C.W. Gortner, a male author who writes compelling first person narratives featuring historical women. My favorite of his is Marlene, which chronicles Marlene Dietrich. I’m so struck by his ability to bring us such an authentic rendering of the inner life of a woman.

Thursday About the Writing of Past Betrayals, Past Loves @BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Paranormal #time travel #Egypt #Britain #Peru #China

I have always enjoyed reading about ancient Egypt. While reading one book, I came upon these words. Mermeshu was his name. There was just a line about the time when there was no Pharaoh and many men view to become the ruler of the land. I never learned if he succeeded for even a short period of time but I believed this would make a good book. I mullled the idea for months and suddenly the idea came into being. This began a journey of research taking me to many lands. The story started in the present when a young woman's father had a stroke and she took over his shop selling antiquities from ancient lands. In handling these artifacts, she was sent to other times and places. In each area, the heroine, hero, 2 villains, her father, a friend and an older woman manifested as different people. This lead to the present with the people being present in this day and age.

I really loved finding a time in the history of each of the lands that would lead to the curse that sent them all to another time and place. The current cover for the series is amazing and has recieved many compliments. Thanks to Michelle Lee for her inspiration for I had no idea for a cover.

BLURB:

Torn apart years ago by lies and threats, Rafe Marshall returns to town and confronts Manon Lockley. She has been told he died on the night he stood her up for their senior prom.

When she faints, Rafe catches her and realizes he hasn’t stopped loving her. Manon carries anger and now grief that wasn’t real. Rafe wants her in his life, but she doesn’t want to talk about what happened in the past. She can’t be sure if her father or someone else told lies about Rafe and she doesn’t want to know. Can Rafe persuade her to listen? Not without a battle.

EXCERPT

MManon Lockley parked in the driveway of the small yellow brick ranch house she’d converted into an office for her medical practice. She slid from the driver’s seat and paused to inhale the fragrance of the June roses.

At the moment she felt like the White Rabbit. She was very late for office hours. Mrs. Patton, director of nursing at Fern Lake General had been admitted to the hospital this morning with chest pain. As her primary physician, Manon had remained to monitor the older woman’s condition and to work with the cardiologist to stabilize the hospital’s most admired employee.

Manon glanced at her watch. Well past three. How long would she need to stay? Her stomach grumbled reminding her she hadn’t eating lunch. Exhaustion caused by the emergency made her shoulders slump under the weight of the event.

She opened the door leading to the reception area. Hopefully her nurse/secretary had been able to reschedule the patients for another day.

The rumble of a motorcycle sounded in the distance. Her muscles tightened. Her fists clenched. Her heart pounded in an erratic rhythm. The roar of a bike never failed to flood her with memories she didn’t want. Those memories had been shattered years ago and still filled her with anger and grief.

Do not go there.

After sucking in a series of cleansing breaths, she entered and paused at the reception desk. The cheerful yellow walls brightened her mood. She glanced into the waiting room and saw just two people seated on the brown leather chairs. Manon smiled. Two to four patients was better than the dozen plus who had been scheduled.

Emma hung up the phone. “Finally.”

Manon nodded. “It’s been quite a day. Things here.”

“Relatively quiet. Managed to reschedule all but five of today’s appointments. Schedule will be tight for the rest of the week. How’s Mrs. Patton?”

“Stable. Angina. No cause yet. Tests to run before we know her course of treatment."

Emma smiled. “That’s great. Will be hard to think of the hospital without her at the helm. I wouldn’t be in school for my nurse practitioner’s degree if she hadn’t pushed me to try.”

Manon half-sat on a corner of the desk. “Did you know she plans to retire?”

“I’ve heard the rumors. They say she waited until she found the right replacement. I heard she made a recommendation to the Board. Someone from the city.”

Manon frowned. “How do you think the supervisors will feel about that?”

“None are qualified. Ruth has a doctorate. None of the others in upper management does. What have you heard? Any names?”

Manon rose. “No rumors but I’m not on the Board. Hope they bring the person on staff early.”y Places

Tuesday's Writer's Tip What next in Plotting #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Writing #Plotting

You have your idea well thought out and you know what direction you want to take the story whether action or mind structure. What comes next? Deciding on certain things about the world you're creating. You may be writing a mystery, a romance, a fantasy or science fiction or som other genre but knowing what's good and bad about your world is a must. Do the good always win? Do the bad come up with the victory. You need to look at this and make a decision. This adds a depth to your initial decision of the story being physically or mentally bound.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading - Read and enjoyed For Love of Faith by Trisha McGill About Australia and a nice romance. I had a little problem believing one of the characters. From being mean to her daughter, she turned around and became nice. The book though was about her daughter and much could have been hellpful if more of the mother's change in character was shown in more pieces than abruptly. Also read Blackmail and White Lightning by Paul Sinor - a mystery story on two levels with bad whiskey killing people in Atlanta and a businessman being blackmailed. The two stories run together and yet are separate. Was an almost historical story but a good read. Started on an Anne Perry Monk story.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - I am having doubts about the Supreme Court. They seem to be headed in a direction opposite the majority of people in this country. The real problem is they sit on their for life. I really believe there should be term limits. When that began few people lived forever. One of the judges made distasteful jokes. Makes me wonder about senility. I sure hope something will be done to change matters. I do not believe the states should be able to over-rule votes ina national election. Tht seems to be the aim. So hard to think of what may be the result.

Meander 3 - Writing - Have begun the rough draft of Imagined Dreams. Not sure I like the title but at this point can't think of another. Mrs. Miller's story is now in the forming area and one day soon, I'll start to plot it out. Am still working on Keltoi though, Splitting myself in thirds these days.

Sunday's Book Past Betrayals Past Loves #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #paranormal #time travel #Egypt #Britain #Switzerland #Pompei #China #Peru

A curse sends Astrid on a journey to ancient lands. She meets deceit and betrayal searching for true love and to break the curse. The search begins in Egypt. When she touches an ancient Egyptian necklace she is hurtled through time into the turbulent life of another woman. She discovers the words spoken in anger holding her spirit captive. Seven more times she finds a piece of jewelry and returns to a distant past. In each of these lives she encounters and falls in love with a man who seems to be someone recently met in her present as do the enemy man and woman. The heat between Astrid and Duncan is instant and becomes incandescent. Her dislike of two characters grows. Eight realms await her. Eight chances break the curse holding her spellbound and to end the cycle of past betrayals and find love. Eight chances to foil the evil man and woman who follow her and Duncan from era to era.

Astrid Logan travels from her home to her father's after he has a stroke. Her father owns a gallery called Antiquities. After she checks on her father she goes to his shop where his employee, Clive, shows her an Egyptian necklace. When she picks it up she's transported back in time to Ancient Egypt.

In this time period Seshat is the second daughter of the second wife of Nomarch Sehetep. She is sweet and loving and cares for her father. His first daughter of his first wife, Nefru, is conniving and deceitful. When the family receives visitors from Thebes on political business Nefru sets her sights on Mermeshu, the more powerful of the two. When he rejects her for Seshat, Nefru takes the second one, Intef, to her bed. She becomes pregnant with his child and convinces her father that Mermeshu is the father. Her father forces the two to marry. In the meantime Seshat discovers that she is pregnant with Mermeshu's baby. He offeres for her to become his second wife after her sister and delines cursing him until he learns what to value.

When Astrid comes back to the present time two customers come into the shop. Lorna Stinit and Duncan Garrett. There is an instant attraction between Astrid and Duncan. She turns him down when he makes advances, and even after Astrid's refusal Duncan breaks his weekend date with Lorna.

The premise of All Our Yesterdays by Janet Lane Walters is the original curse in Egypt. Each time Astrid picks up a piece of jewelry she is transported into the lives of two lovers. She visits ancient times in Egypt, Babylon, China, Pompeii, Britain, Switzerland, Japan and Peru. And in each place she visits the couple is cursed. It is up to Astrid and Duncan to break the curse.

All Our Yesterdays has a very interesting premise and I enjoyed reading it. But there were so many visits to different times that I felt a bit overwhelmed at times. Still I enjoyed the read and think lovers of time travel and stories of reincarnation will do the same.

Astrid Logan has just found out her father has had a stroke while she's been away. Every summer she joins her father at his shop called Antiquities, but this year it is going to be quite different. Clive, her father's assistant seems more shady than usual, but there are even more stranger things going on that can not be explained. Touching the Egyptian necklace will transport Astrid to ancient Egypt where she will face jealousy, love, and betrayal by her own sister.

That is not the end of Astrid's journey, she is about to visit Babylon, China, Pompeii, Britain, Switzerland, Japan and Peru as well. Although, each place she visits, the couples are cursed in love and are usually pregnant when fated to death. Each piece of jewelry that she touches holds a story, and hopefully those stories will help her figure out what her father has been saying as well as the mysteries to her new beau's past.

Duncan shows up with Lorna on his arm and right away is attracted to Astrid, while Lorna is whining around about the Egyptian pieces. Duncan and Astrid may be fated for the curse of the past, or maybe they will be the ones to break the unlucky chain of events... but what happens when Astrid falls in love, but Duncan is not sure he can quite admit it just yet even though he is infatuated with lust for her.

Two lovers meet again in another place and time, but there are also two saboteurs out there that are in it for the wealth. There are a lot of secrets and feelings that must be sorted out before time runs out.

All Our Yesterdays couldn't be a more perfect title for this book, Janet Lane Walters has a way of riveting the reader with her words from the very start. The ending was something I saw coming, and couldn't have been more ecstatic by the way it turned out. There was a little blip in the details at one point, but it was very minor and it was just my picky eye that caught it, but it in no way deterred me from reading on. Erotic, sensual and enthralling, Walters pens a very good read. 4 Hearts
