Excerpt:

Tira cast her dream self aside and donned the role of practical sister. She hurried to the exit and stepped from the past into a steamy August day. Heat shimmered from the sidewalk. The air hung heavy and filled with the odors of the city and the noises of traffic. She strode along the crowded area taking advantage of every opening.

Ten days to dream. Ten days to walk the halls of the museum. Ten days to study the artifacts that had become her lodestones. She breathed the aromas of real time, spices of cooking foods, metallic scents of passing traffic and the odors of people, some pleasant and some not.

Several blocks from the apartment building the crowds thinned. In an alley she glimpsed furtive movements in the dark shadows. She hurried past. On the corner across the street a group of gang members gathered. She sucked in a breath and held her head high. For all her twenty three years she’d avoided the gangs. As she strode past she heard the usual crude remarks about her body and her attitude.

Get a life, she wanted to scream.

When she saw the ambulance and two cop cars in front of the building where she lived she halted so abruptly she stumbled. A hand caught her arm. Tira saw the gray-streaked beard of one of the winos who slept in the doorways or the alley. “Get your hands off me.”

“Don’t go home,” he whispered. “Lose yourself in the crowd and keep your head down.”

Tira saw a keen intelligence in the man’s dark eyes. Who was he? He wasn’t as old as she had imagined either. “Why?”

“Your sister’s dead. Cops’ll be looking for you. They heard about the fight.”

Tira’s stomach clenched. She blinked away a rush of tears. Though hearing about her sister’s death wasn’t unexpected another dream shattered. There would be no rehab for Luci. “Junkies O.D. every day,” she said.

“She was murdered.”

A chill slithered down Tira’s spine. A rush of acid burned her throat. What? Why? Who? Keeping her eyes on the ground she inched away from him.

“Murder. Murder.” The murmured word spread through the crowd gathered on the sidewalk and stung like attacking wasps.

The EMTs wheeled a gurney from the building. When Tira saw the body bag strapped to the frame her nails bit into her palms. Despite the heat of the day she felt chilled. A wave of guilt made her knees buckle. She stuffed her fist against her mouth to keep from crying aloud.

What now, she wondered. The apartment was a crime scene. Until the cops finished their investigation she wouldn’t be allowed inside. An officer stepped from the building. “More along, folks. There’s nothing to see here.” He stepped from the stoop. “Anyone seen her sister? We have some questions for her.”

Past Betrayals, Past loves is featured on Thursday's Opening Scene #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #romance #time travel #Egypt #China

In her rush to reach the ringing telephone, Astrid Logan nearly sprawled on the suitcases she'd left in the apartment hallway. She grabbed the receiver on the seventh ring. A deep voice spoke her name and her heart thudded in her chest. "Clive?" Had something happened to her father? Was there a problem at Antiquities?

"Been trying to reach you for hours. Where have you been?"

Astrid sucked in a breath. "Dad knows how to reach me at school." She sank to the floor. "What's wrong with him?"

"He's had a stroke."

"How is he?"

"Doctor believes he'll recover completely, but he'll need time in rehab."

"When did this happen and where?"

"This morning at the gallery. We were discussing the placement of several new pieces. He groaned and collapsed. Ambulance arrived maybe fifteen minutes later."

Astrid frowned. What was he holding back? Her father liked and trusted his younger assistant, but for no reason she could discover, Clive had always made her edgy. "Did they do tests?"

"CAT Scan. Then they gave him some kind of special IV. Guess this will make you change your summer plans."

"Why should it?" Clive had been her father's assistant at the gallery for a year and a half. He knew she spent every summer at Antiquities.

"Then you're really not coming."

"What are you talking about? I had planned to drive down tomorrow." Since she'd turned twelve, she'd spent every summer at the shop with her dad. In sixteen years, she knew as much about the shop as her father.

"Thought your dad said you wouldn't be here. Never mind. It's just ... I was going to move into his apartment."

"Why?"

"To keep an eye on the gallery."

Astrid frowned. That didn't make sense. The thirty-year-old playboy had an expensive co-op on the river. "Isn't there a sophisticated alarm system?"

"Alarms can be by-passed."

"Are there problems?"

"In a way. A few pieces have gone missing and your dad won't hear of calling the police."

"I see." She didn't, but once she was sure her father was recovering, she intended to check.

"When are you coming?"

"As soon as I pack the car."

"Imagine you'll arrive between five and six. I'll close the shop and meet you at the hospital."

"No need. I have keys. After I check on Dad, I'll stop by the gallery." She hung up and started to call the hospital. Why? It would be a futile gesture. They would merely confirm her father was a patient, but they wouldn't disclose the information she wanted.

She made a quick check of the nearly empty apartment. Her furniture was in storage until she found a place closer to the university where she would begin a graduate program in September.

Twenty minutes later, she'd packed the car. On the way out of town, she dropped the keys at the real estate agency and began the four-hour trip to Rockleigh, the Hudson River village where her father lived.

During the drive, she tried not to think about her father. If she didn't dwell on her fears, they wouldn't come true. Think positive, she told herself. She recalled her father's excitement over the changes he and Clive had made at Antiquities and the enthusiasm over a new customer. What would happen to the gallery if he wasn't there? She gripped the wheel and shifted mental gears.

Astrid parked in the hospital lot and stopped at the information desk. With a visitor's pass in hand, she went to the third floor and found her father's room. The odors, the moans and cries, the bustle of activity made her feel as though she'd entered an alien land. Her job as a school nurse held none of these scenes. She paused in the doorway of the semi-private room. One bed was empty. Her father lay in the window bed.

For a moment, she stared. How had he aged so much since the last time she'd seen him? Easter had been just two and a half months ago. During their weekly phone calls, he'd sounded the way he always had. She approached the bed, checked the intravenous site and the rate and looked at the oxygen meter on the wall. Seemed fine.

"Dad."

He opened his eyes and tried to smile. She took his hand. He spoke, but the words were so garbled she couldn't decipher them. Tears threatened. She swallowed against the lump in her throat.

"Don't worry about Antiquities. I'll keep Clive in line. I'll have the records in order by the time you're back."

Her words seemed to give him peace. The lines around his mouth relaxed. Until the urge to cry grew too strong, she remained. "I'm going to the apartment, then the gallery. I'll be back this evening."

He mouthed a word.

"Good?" she asked.

He nodded.

Outside the room, she pulled a tissue from her bag and wiped her eyes. At the nurses' desk, she paused. "I'm Mr. Logan's daughter. How is he?"

A gray-haired woman looked up. "He's stable and responding to treatment. We were able to start things within hours after the stroke."

Sunday's Book Past Betrayals Past Loves #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #paranormal #time travel #Egypt #Britain #Switzerland #Pompei #China #Peru

A curse sends Astrid on a journey to ancient lands. She meets deceit and betrayal searching for true love and to break the curse. The search begins in Egypt. When she touches an ancient Egyptian necklace she is hurtled through time into the turbulent life of another woman. She discovers the words spoken in anger holding her spirit captive. Seven more times she finds a piece of jewelry and returns to a distant past. In each of these lives she encounters and falls in love with a man who seems to be someone recently met in her present as do the enemy man and woman. The heat between Astrid and Duncan is instant and becomes incandescent. Her dislike of two characters grows. Eight realms await her. Eight chances break the curse holding her spellbound and to end the cycle of past betrayals and find love. Eight chances to foil the evil man and woman who follow her and Duncan from era to era.

Astrid Logan travels from her home to her father's after he has a stroke. Her father owns a gallery called Antiquities. After she checks on her father she goes to his shop where his employee, Clive, shows her an Egyptian necklace. When she picks it up she's transported back in time to Ancient Egypt.

In this time period Seshat is the second daughter of the second wife of Nomarch Sehetep. She is sweet and loving and cares for her father. His first daughter of his first wife, Nefru, is conniving and deceitful. When the family receives visitors from Thebes on political business Nefru sets her sights on Mermeshu, the more powerful of the two. When he rejects her for Seshat, Nefru takes the second one, Intef, to her bed. She becomes pregnant with his child and convinces her father that Mermeshu is the father. Her father forces the two to marry. In the meantime Seshat discovers that she is pregnant with Mermeshu's baby. He offeres for her to become his second wife after her sister and delines cursing him until he learns what to value.

When Astrid comes back to the present time two customers come into the shop. Lorna Stinit and Duncan Garrett. There is an instant attraction between Astrid and Duncan. She turns him down when he makes advances, and even after Astrid's refusal Duncan breaks his weekend date with Lorna.

The premise of All Our Yesterdays by Janet Lane Walters is the original curse in Egypt. Each time Astrid picks up a piece of jewelry she is transported into the lives of two lovers. She visits ancient times in Egypt, Babylon, China, Pompeii, Britain, Switzerland, Japan and Peru. And in each place she visits the couple is cursed. It is up to Astrid and Duncan to break the curse.

All Our Yesterdays has a very interesting premise and I enjoyed reading it. But there were so many visits to different times that I felt a bit overwhelmed at times. Still I enjoyed the read and think lovers of time travel and stories of reincarnation will do the same.

Astrid Logan has just found out her father has had a stroke while she's been away. Every summer she joins her father at his shop called Antiquities, but this year it is going to be quite different. Clive, her father's assistant seems more shady than usual, but there are even more stranger things going on that can not be explained. Touching the Egyptian necklace will transport Astrid to ancient Egypt where she will face jealousy, love, and betrayal by her own sister.

That is not the end of Astrid's journey, she is about to visit Babylon, China, Pompeii, Britain, Switzerland, Japan and Peru as well. Although, each place she visits, the couples are cursed in love and are usually pregnant when fated to death. Each piece of jewelry that she touches holds a story, and hopefully those stories will help her figure out what her father has been saying as well as the mysteries to her new beau's past.

Duncan shows up with Lorna on his arm and right away is attracted to Astrid, while Lorna is whining around about the Egyptian pieces. Duncan and Astrid may be fated for the curse of the past, or maybe they will be the ones to break the unlucky chain of events... but what happens when Astrid falls in love, but Duncan is not sure he can quite admit it just yet even though he is infatuated with lust for her.

Two lovers meet again in another place and time, but there are also two saboteurs out there that are in it for the wealth. There are a lot of secrets and feelings that must be sorted out before time runs out.

All Our Yesterdays couldn't be a more perfect title for this book, Janet Lane Walters has a way of riveting the reader with her words from the very start. The ending was something I saw coming, and couldn't have been more ecstatic by the way it turned out. There was a little blip in the details at one point, but it was very minor and it was just my picky eye that caught it, but it in no way deterred me from reading on. Erotic, sensual and enthralling, Walters pens a very good read. 4 Hearts

Thursday's Opening Scene Toth's Priest #NWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Alternate world #Ancient Egypt #Paranormal

A chill walked Amara’s spine and broke her concentration on the movements of the exercise. As she hit the wall to propel herself into the air, she slipped and landed in a heap on the matted gym floor of the church run community center. She peered toward the door. The local drug lord and his nephew paused in the doorway. Probably headed to the priest’s office for a weekly visit. Her hands coiled into fists.

Ramos moved away but Miguel remained. His hooded gaze stripped her naked. She rose and completed the final exercise of today’s martial arts training session. A quick glance at the door showed he was gone. She should have felt relief but the hands shook and the sour smell of rear remained.

“Ready for a match?” another of the students asked.

Amara shook her head. “I have to leave.”

The teenager stepped closer. “Wonder what Ramos wants?”

“Father Joe will know but I don’t intend to ask him.” With shaking hands she pulled on her jeans and tee shirt and tied her sneakers. In a half-run, she hurried to the door and left the community center.

Outside, aromas reached her. Cooking food, exhaust from cars and busses. Her own fear laced sweat. Noises penetrated. Music, horns, people’s voices. Her glance darted from side to side. Was anyone watching her?

What could she do? The last time she’s encountered Ramos’s nephew he’d frightened her. “Gonna plow you good, babe. You’ll sing for me real sweet.” She had no one to guard her back. Hadn’t had anyone since her father’s death. She sighed. She’s almost had a friend once. An undercover cop had saved her. Then Ramos had discovered the man’s identity. Seth had vanished. Was he dead?

As she scurried toward the apartment building where she lived with her uncle and his family, she fought to control the fear rocketing through her thoughts. Her breathing came in quick gasps. After her father’s death and her mother’s suicide her uncle had reluctantly given her a home. Social Security benefits had been the reason but she would soon age out.

When she reached the building instead of stopping on the fourth floor she continued up the stairs toward the room. She wasn’t ready to hear her uncle’s demands she quit school and find a job. She rubbed her arms. There was no one to help her.

The sound of feet on the stairs from below reached her. She crouched and peered through the railing. She sucked in a breath. Would her pounding heart shatter her ribs? Why was Ramos here? One of his bodyguards pounded on her uncle’s door.

In her contemporary life, Amaa is an orphan, raised grudgingly by her uncle and threatened with rape by two men. When given a chance by two women skilled in magic to travel back in time to ancient Egypt, she accepts.
Namose wants to become a priest of the god Toth but is captured and forced to follow the dictates of an alien god and to translate scrolls of that god.
"Toth's Priest" tells of Amara's and Namose's adventures and growing love for each other. This book was obviously well-researched and is full of action. For those reasons, I gave it a 5 star rating. However, the sentences didn't show much variation and often read monotonously. I would have liked to see a bit more narrative interspersed with the dialogue.
Neverlheless, this is a great adventure and worthwhile read.

A teen age girl in desperate circumstances flees into an alternate past, hoping to find a better life. Here she steps into another, just as dangerous, world, one of magicians, rival gods and spell-casting. This is the final book in a YA series set in an alternate past—Ancient Egypt. There is plenty of action, brave young characters, twists and turns, all set in well-researched ancient setting. Egypt, all by itself, is sufficiently interesting for many readers, but here the “alternate” adds a bit more spice. The names of real history players and gods are here, slightly changed.

Thursday's Opening Scene from Bast's Warrior #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Alternate world #Egypt #Swords

Tira wanted three things in life and she had little chance of gaining any of them. She wanted to be financially independent. She wanted to go to Egypt and study the ancient ruins. And she wanted her sister to stop using drugs.

The last desire brought memories of this morning’s quarrel. Luci had taken the money Tira had squirreled away to see them through the rest of the month. “Luci, why?”

“You don’t understand,” Luci screamed.

True. Tira didn’t understand why her sister needed to escape into a drugged stupor instead of studying and working to step onto the road leading from the slums. Tira’s hands stung with the memory of slapping her sister. And the words she’d shouted as she slammed out of the apartment echoed in her thoughts. “I hate you. I wish you were dead.” Tira shuddered. She hadn’t meant those words. As soon as she reached the apartment she would tell Luci.

With a sigh she turned back to the museum display. The Egyptian artifacts awed her. For a short time she allowed the beauty of the objects to carry her into dreams of pyramids and temples, of gods and pharaohs and of digging in the earth to uncover treasures of the past.

The dream hovered beyond her grasp. Her chances of gaining a position on a dig in Egypt were slim. Positions were avidly sought by students who had chosen the right colleges and the right professors. Those choices had been beyond her financially. She sucked in a breath. Instead of adventure, when the summer ended, she would take her place in front of a classroom teaching history at an inner city high school.

A glance at her watch said dreamtime was over. She had to reach the apartment in time to change for her evening shift as a restaurant several blocks from the cramped fifth floor efficiency she shared with her older sister. Once again flash moments from the morning’s quarrel exploded in Tira’s thoughts. She’d been so upset she’d missed her morning martial arts session at the local center.

Familial intrigue heightens the tension, as does a kidnapping or two. The cast of characters is dynamic and complements the well-conceived plot." ~ 4 Stars, Susan Mobley, Romantic Times Magazine

Excerpt:

Though those words brought a lessening of Kashe’s tension, the odds against him were eight to one. Still he intended to fight. The first of the attackers sped toward him. Kashe waited until the man’s intentions were clear. He slashed with his knife and a line of blood appeared on the enemy’s chest. The man howled and retreated. Kashe moved to the side in an attempt to prevent being encircled. He ducked a swung club. The dodge saved him from a knife wielder. Instead of Kashe the club bashed the man with the knife.
A cat yowled. An eerie shout answered. For a moment the attackers froze. A stranger kicked one of the enemies beneath the chin. An ally, Kashe thought. Another attacker charged the new arrival. In a blur the man flew through the air and slammed against the street. Kashe evaded a fist and dove forward. He connected with an attacker’s stomach. His ally faced another of the enemy and slashed the side of a hand against the man’s throat. Before long the eight river men sprawled on the ground.
Kashe drew a deep breath and turned to thank his ally. He stepped over fallen bodies. “Don’t know who you are or where you came from but you have my thanks.”
“No problem. You were in trouble.”
His eyes widened. The new arrival was a tall beautiful woman. Her skin was a warm brown several shades darker than his. Black hair, clipped short, formed tight curls. Her eyes were as dark as night. Her gaze filled with desire.
She strode toward him. Her eyes glittered and he saw her beaded nipples press against her breast band. His body responded to her scent. He was primed and she seemed willing.
He pulled her into his arms and pressed his mouth against hers. The touch felt as hot as the growing season’s sun at midday. He cupped her rear. The aroma of sweat and woman surrounded him. Her nipples tightened against his chest. She fit against him perfectly.
She slid her arms across his shoulders and stroked the skin beneath his warrior’s braid. He slipped a hand under the edge of her kilt and pressed her closer. With his teeth he tugged on her lower lip and gained entrance to her mouth. His engorged member throbbed with an urgent need for release.
The cat yowled again. Horu Ka screeched. Awareness of where he was and what he’d been about to do slammed into Kashe. He drew a deep breath and released her.
     “Don’t stop,” she murmured.
He didn’t want to let her go but continuing wasn’t for here and now. “Not a good idea. The river men are stirring. We must go.”
She drew a deep breath. “You’re right.” She moved away and retrieved a bundle.

As she slid her arms through the straps moonlight glinted on the amulet she wore. Kashe examined the medallion. “Are you one of Bast’s warriors?”

Thursday's Third Scene from Toth's Priest #MFRWauthor #BooksWeLoveLTD #Romance paranormal #Egypt ancient #history alternate

Three nights of traveling with rests during the heat of the day convinced Namose Hebu was right. Without a camel and supplies he would never make the return trip to Tebes. Sand, dunes, jutting rocks. The desolation of the land lowered his spirits.
The camels began the bone-jarring gait. As he fought to keep his balance, in the distance Namose saw hints of green against the blue horizon. Trees meant an oasis. They drew closer and he saw a large tent with stripes the colors of the robes the priests wore.
Namose swallowed against a lump in his throat. They had reached their destination. He had no idea where they were except far to the east of the river, the bringer of life. He wanted to cry but he couldn’t waste tears. He wouldn’t find sympathy from the priests of Aken Re.
The camels halted and folded their kegs. Hebu released Namose. “Carry the scrolls to the tent.”
“What are they?” he asked.
Hebu chuckled. “You will soon see. Your father named you as one who could read the ancient writing used by the priests of Toth, a false god.”
Namose gulped. “I know a few words.” Why had his father said he could read the ancient writing? “I’m no scholar.”
Hebu’s chilling smile sent a warning. “The scrolls contain knowledge about powers only the priests of Aken Re. the true and only god, should possess.”
Namose rubbed his arms. Even in the heated air he felt cold. “What if I refuse?”
“You won’t. Your life is mine to command. Tomorrow you will begin.” He pushed Namose to the tent, “Eat and sleep until I wake you.”
Once again the desire to escape arose but there was no way. Refusal to obey Hebu would mean his death. He opened the flap and stepped into the enclosed space. After storing the bundle in the rear of the tent, he helped himself to cheese, dates and water. He ate and retreated to where he’d placed the scrolls and settled to sleep.
He dreamed. Toth appeared. Spoke. “Do what you must to stay alive. You know enough to satisfy the evil one. A time will come when you will act. First you must become a man. The scrolls are mine and will be returned to the temple.”
The vision faded leaving Namose’s questions unasked. Could he believe what he’d heard or had his desire directed the dream?
