EXCERPT:

After a quick wash-up, I brewed a pot of mint tea.  Robespierre began his greeting dance. Before I had a chance to see who had arrived, the cat slipped through his door. When I saw him on the landing with my young friend Robby, I called a greeting.

“Mrs. Miller, can I visit?” Robby asked. “I need to ask you something really important.”
     “Over milk and cookies?”
He nodded. “Mom said I can have three.”
“How does peanut butter with chocolate chips sound?” His grin provided my answer.
“Oh, yes.” He bent and scratched Robespierre’s head. The large cat rumbled like the sound of distant thunder.
Once the ritual greeting ended, three cookies and a glass of milk waited on the table. Robby pulled a stool to the sink and washed his hands. “See. I ‘membered.”
“So you did.” While he ate the first cookie, I filled a mug and sat across the table from him. “Do you want to tell me what’s bothering you?”
He propped his elbows on the table. “How can a boy be happy his grandma died? If I had one, I would be sad.”
I sipped the tea. “That’s a hard question. Want to tell me how you learned the boy was happy about her death?”
He leaned forward. “He’s in my class. Always saying bad things ‘bout her. Said she was rich and mean ‘cause she wouldn’t buy him all the toys he wanted.”
     “Sounds like he’s greedy.”
Robby’s head bobbed. “He sure is. Always saying how his things are better than mine ‘cause they cost more.”
“So why was he happy she died?”
“’Cause his mom and dad don’t fight with his grandma ‘bout her money. They got it all.”
I cradled the mug. “Is he happy now?”
“Guess so. He says so but he’s still mean.” Robby reached for a second cookie. “He got a new bike and lots of video games. He’s gonna live in a big new house. They can ‘ford a new one ‘cause no more money goes to that place.”
     “What place?”
“You know, the one on the river where old people go. Our class went there once to sing. They liked us.”
     “Hudson House?”
     “Yep.”
The private nursing home is where the rich of the area go to recover from surgery or to spend their final years. The boy’s grandmother must have had the means to pay for the luxurious service.      I patted Robby’s hand. “I’m not sure I have answers for your questions. I’m not sure there are any.”
He looked up. “If I had a grandma, she would be just like you.”
“Thank you.” I patted his hand. “Tell you what. Why don’t I become your adopted grandma?”

Murder and Tainted Tea (Mrs. Miller Mysteries Book 3)

This story in Katherine's life shows two things. Her guilt over the murders at the church and her developing relationship with Lars. Aftera visit to Santa Fe while my husband attended a conference, I took time to explore the city and found it fascinating. Always wanted to put it in a book. I had also decided to move Katherine into unfamiliar territory and remembered Lars lived in Santa Fe for part of the year. What better time to take her there than for a New Year's Eve party. When I began the book, I had no idea how convoluted it would become. Katherine arrives in Santa Fe to find Lars missing. I had no idea why he had been sort of kidnapped. As I rough drafted the story all became muddier until it became clear. I was certainly glad to bring Katherine home again and continue the romance in other books.

Thursday Murder and Poisoned Tea Janet Lane Walters - More characters who appear in the series.

Always Katherine and Robespierre have roles in this story. Let me show you a bit about some of the other regulars.

Reverend Potter -

“Good grief, Katherine, I hope he’s not planning to bite me again.”
Edward Potter, pastor of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, glared at the cat.
His voice had risen to a high pitch. “Whatever do you feed him? He’s ever
so much bigger than Bitsy.”
The temptation to say my pet fed on pastors was strong. I refrained
and fought to control a grin that threatened to blossom. Teasing Edward
usually results in a lecture delivered in an indignant voice.
With an air of disdain, Robiesperre stretched. His back rippled in a
way I envy. Then he slithered around Edward.
When Edward reached the top of the steps, he turned and peered
the cat. “He’s becoming more brazen.”
“Only toward selected guests. He ignores most people.” I turned my
head and Edward brushed my cheek with his lips.
Edward is a dapper little man with an ear for gossip and a penchant
for turning even the slightest event into a fiesta or a disaster. He’s astute
about church politics. The coffers at St. Stephen’s are filled through his
ability to cosset and cajole the elderly population of the church, mainly
wealthy women. I partially fit the category, being over sixty-five, and while
not rich, I’m at least comfortable.
When he entered the sunlit kitchen, the expression on his face
announced a problem. He walked into the living room. Unlike most of my
guests, he considered chats at the kitchen table for commoners. In the
living room, he perched on the edge of a Queen Anne chair, purchased
years ago before antiques became the rage.

Maria - Next door neighbor. Maria is featured in many of the books.

Robespierre stretched and ambled across the lawn to the yard next
door where Maria Prescott was enjoying the sun and the baby she and Paul
had adopted in Spain. The cat sat on the edge of a bright blanket and
stared at the infant. We all wondered how he would act when Carlos began
to crawl.

Sarah lives across the street and plays a role in many of the stories.

The next afternoon, Beth dropped by while I sat on the porch with my

neighbor, Sarah. Sarah’s children, three of her own and two foster
children, played in the yard. The two older ones, Larry and Jamal,
supervised the younger ones by shouting commands.
     “Beth, where’s Robby?”
“Pete took him to Little League practice.” She sank on the top step.
“I think he’s too young for that kind of competition. Pete laughs at me.”
“Do you mean Pete Duggan?” Sarah leaned forward. “I didn’t think
he was interested in anyone under twenty-five and who wasn’t female.”
Beth closed her eyes, “He’s adopted my son. He tolerates me.”
“You can change that,” Sarah said. “Saw the new organist this
morning. What a hunk. Just invite him over when Pete’s around. He sure
thrives on competition.”
     Beth smiled. “That’s an idea.”
I looked away. Though I think Pete and Beth are a great match, I
wouldn’t interfere. Matchmaking can be hazardous to your well being. If
the couples like each other -- great. If they don’t, you lose two friends.

Thursday's Fourth Scene Murder and Herbal Tea #MFRWauthor #BWLPublisher #Cozy mystery #Herbal Tea

When Dana knocked on the door, Joyce let her in. Unlike her mother, the young woman’s hair hung straight. She looked stressed. “Problems?” I asked.
     “Bad day.”
     “What happened?” Joyce asked.
“One of my students ended in the emergency room. Spaced out on uppers.”
“Will she recover?” I knew the toll amphetamines took on the body.
“I think so. Zach asked me questions about her and wanted me to talk to her."
“What did he want to know?” Joyce asked.
“About drugs on campus. I didn’t think they were prevalent. He said the student refused to say where she got them. As if she’d tell me. All I know is she decided to pull an all-nighter to finish a paper due tomorrow.”
For a short time we let her talk. Dana was only a few years older than her students, but being a teacher kept her out of their loop.
When she wound down we went to the kitchen and ate pie.
“Thanks for bringing me a piece.”
“Wouldn’t have been fair if we hadn’t.” Joyce turned to me. “Where are you and Lars going to live?”
“We bought a house on the river.”
“You’re giving up that magnificent Victorian?”
“My apartment was too small and his house too large.”
She grinned. “You’ll love the river view.”
“Definitely. The house is on the left side of my favorite viewing place. It’s across the road from the doctor’s huge house.”
Dana leaned forward. “Where are you honeymooning?”
“That’s under consideration and one of the reasons I bolted. We’ll eventually reach a compromise.

Murder and Bitter Tea (Mrs. Miller Mysteries Book 4)

Join us at #MFRWHooks for some great book http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com    Mine is Murder and Bitter tea. Katherine sets herself up as an undercover nurse at a nursing home for wealthy patrons.

BLURB:

Katherine’s newest tenant is estranged from her family and is the granddaughter of one of Katherine’s friends. When her friend falls and fractures her hip, the elderly woman is taken to Hudson House nursing home, an exclusive house.

Katherine’s friend becomes concerned about several recent and unexpected deaths. When she dies Katherine’s curiosity and suspicions send her undercover as a nurse. Soon she’s deeply involved.

Can she learn who is behind the scheme to end the lives of wealthy patients without becoming a victim?

Excerpt:
I waited until after lunch to visit Martha at the hospital. As I walked down the corridor of the Surgical Unit, the familiar scents and sounds made me wish I was back in uniform. A very bad idea. I remembered what had happened when I resurfaced as a church organist. Maybe the desire to return was akin to an old racehorse wanting to take another lap around the track.
I paused outside Martha’s private room and listened for voices. Hearing none I wanted to avoid, I tapped on the partially open door. The nurse who appeared had been a colleague until she opted for private duty.
“Kate, how nice to see you. Heard you retired. Are you visiting someone?”
     “Martha. We’re old friends.”
She shook her head. “Her son doesn’t want anyone other than family visiting. She needs to rest.”
“Think of this as a pastoral call. We attend the same church.” On occasion, I made hospital calls for our pastor.
“Katherine, is that you?” Martha asked.
     “Yes.”
“Let her in. It’s vital for me to speak to her.”
Fran shrugged. “Go ahead. You can sit with her while I grab lunch. Her daughter-in-law was due to relieve me a half hour ago. Her son doesn’t want her left alone.”
To keep out visitors who didn’t meet his approval was my take on the order. “Thanks.” I entered and went to the bedside. “How are you feeling?”
“Sore. Dumb. Awkward. I’m glad you came.”
“Jenna says she loves you and she’ll find a way to visit.”
“Tell her to wait until I go to Hudson House. Marcus is so over-protective. When I’m there, he’ll know I’m recovering and he won’t worry so.” She clasped my hand. “Give me my handbag.”
I looked in the bedside stand and the closet. “Not here.”
Her forehead wrinkled. “That’s right. I had it put in the safe.”
Why hadn’t she sent her valuables home with her son? “I guess whatever you wanted to give me will have to wait.”
She nodded. “There are some things at the house I want you to remove.”
What’s going on?” I turned. Sophie Garner stood in the doorway. She flipped her long blonde hair over her shoulder.
     “I’m visiting,” I said.
“Marcus doesn’t want Mother Garner disturbed. Did that stupid nurse let you in? I’ll see she’s fired at once.”
“You’ll do nothing of the sort.” Martha’s voice held an iron edge. “I pay her and if I think she deserves to be fired, I will. You’re almost an hour late to relieve her. Kate kindly volunteered to stay while the nurse had lunch.”
Sophie waved her red-tipped fingers. “Did you expect me to walk out on Linda Eliot? She’s a very influential person around the county.”
Martha snorted. “A newcomer with new money. The Garners have been forces to reckon with for over a hundred years, but you always did like flash.” She dropped her hand on the bed. “Don’t let her vulgar money sway you, but there’s no sense trying to make silk from trash.”
“How can you say that? I’ve given you two lovely granddaughters.” Sophie turned to me. “You can leave. When I tell Marcus you were here, he’ll be livid.”
“You’ll tell him nothing.” Martha glared. “Sophie, step outside. I want to speak to Katherine alone.”
     “I will not.”
I clasped Martha’s hand. “It’s all right. I’ll talk to you later.”
Martha nodded. “Let my nurse know Sophie’s here and she has no reason to worry or hurry her break.”
“Will do.” I slipped past Sophie and strode down the hall. At the nurses’ lounge, I opened the door and passed Martha’s message to Fran.
