Tuesday's Writer's Tip Preparing for the big scene #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Writing

You know there's a big scene coming ahead. Do you spring it on the reader or do you prepare the reader for something to happen? That question has one answer. Prepare.

In preparing you don't have to be blatant about what's to come. Subtle hints are good enough. Writing just enough about what's to come in a short and subtle way adds to the reader's curiosity. There's a downside to this. If you hint too blatantly the reader doesn't have anycuriosity about whatwill happen. the trick is to make a little promise that there's something important about to happen.

Springing a big scene on areader without preparing them for what may come could lose them. They might decide the story doesn't make sense and toss it aside. While the shock might be like that clapof thunder that startles you before a storm but it doesn't have any real effect. Being subtle is always the way to go.

A mention of a coming meeting or event is enough to alert the reader. Going on and on about what this meeting could mean is too much information. So take care when preparing for that big scene.
