Tuesday's Writer's Tip - Plot and me #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Plot #Characters

Finished the many days of speaking about Polt and keeping this part of the story going. I'm really a plot driven author but one of my writing friends said something different. She admits that I'm plot oriented but she contends suddenly the characters take over.  I'm not sure I agree but she could be right.

When I begin a story, my characters don't have names but titles hero, heroine, villain or secondary character. I really plan the story from the beginning to the end. Of course this isn't carved in stone. The final product can be different from this first story sketch that happens ,ostly in my head until I feel the need to write a chapter synopois. At this point the characters develop names and traits.

Then comes the rough draft which realizees the chapter synopsis with changes as needed. Then I  doa double read through amd keke notes on the printed pages, lots of notes but only about plot points and setting. Then I write another draft of the story. By write, I mean physically with pen and paper on lined tablets. This is typed in

Then it's on to another double read through for characters and language. Then I final write through but not a complete one. This is mainly redoing scenes and adding material that somehow I've skimmed over. I'm sure this drives my critique partners crazy since what really happens is instead of cutting parts that have bohered them, I expand. A final read through for spelling and grammar takes place and the book is done.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFWAuthor #Teading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading - Been reading several different books Dean L Hovey's latest Fatal Business - a nice police oriented story witha cast of continuing characters and a dead hunter. Accident or murder>  The Tiger and an Honorable Man by Charles Mossop - interesting and loaded with knowledge about ancient China. Begins with a dead bird and moved through to murder. A lot of background and learning new things.  A Regency that had some humorous and interesting bits but went on too long.

Meader 2 - Thoughts - I'll soon have a birthday and sometimes I wonder how I have gotten so old so fast. Will be seeing my daughter and grandchildren in Florida. Haven's seen them since COVID began. Though to do this I must go to Florida, a state I would ratner not visit, I'll bite the bullet. Sure wish they couldhave afforded to come here.

Meander 3 - Roght draft is finished and I;m doing a read through to see what scenery needs to be added and expanded and to make sure the plot is going well. Then it will be another rewrite

Sunday's Book - Melodic Dreams #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #romance #music #unknown son #occupational therapy

When Maria and a child she says is his arrives on Jay’s doorsteps, he is in the middle of composing a musical. Though the four year old has his eyes, Jay can’t be sure this isn’t a scam.

He believes his dead wife took steps to rid herself of the child. A need for his assistance to help with childcare while she works is Maria’s reason for arriving in Fern Lake. She also believes her nephew should know his father.

Can Jay accept and learn to love his child and deal with the attraction to a woman who physically looks like his dead wife? Can Maria deal with his trust issues and a threat from her own family?

Entertaining read!

This story tugged my heartstrings. Part of that is because I identify so closely with the heroine Maria. I've was a single parent once myself and I know how demanding that can be. Maria takes on the same demands to parent her nephew Jamie. He's a lovable four-year-old for sure but I still admire her. Especially when she extends herself even further and tries to unite the boy with his estranged father Jay who misunderstands her intentions entirely. Which is maybe understandable since she's financially distressed and he's wealthy. Meanwhile Maria and Jay are attracted to each other from the start but that only complicates the situation more. Plus Maria injures herself and... Well I'm not going to spoil the story for you. I was rooting for this trio to become a family from the start. Each of them needs the other and they all need to be together. But there are obstacles to overcome. Substantial obstacles. That's what makes this such a compelling read. That and the chemistry between Maria and Jay which is hot and gets hotter still all the way through. I recommend this as Janet Lane Walters' best novel yet.

Saturday's Blurbs featrue Books by Eden Monroe #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Romantic suspense #civil engineer # crime he didn't commit

JUST BEFORE SUNSET

Aiden Briggs is a hunk, there’s just no other way to say it. Tall, well-muscled and ruggedly handsome, his work as a civil engineer routinely takes him to untamed corners of the globe. His wife, Suzanne, is a quiet beauty, dark-haired and doe-eyed, and a gifted water colourist. Fiercely devoted to one another, theirs was an ideal marriage until the bottom suddenly dropped out of their world.

After five years, the emotional scars from that life-changing ordeal have yet to heal. And now each of them face their own personal trauma, struggling to come to grips with the unthinkable.

Will Suzanne survive her crisis? Can Aiden find his way back home, or will the detour forced upon him be his last?

However his small, idyllic hometown has not forgotten or forgiven, and his return there sets off a chain of events that push Blaise to the edge of his endurance.

Can he win back the trust and love of Sophie McDaniels, the woman he loves, or will she keep her wedding date with another man?

DANGEROUS GETAWAY

No one knows his dark side like the guests who visit Birch Shadow, including Rhone Alexander who sought the spectacular retreat for some much-needed R&R following the end of a difficult marriage. Worse waited.

Grace Upton is an up and coming interior decorator unwittingly drawn into the treacherous Birch Shadow game.

Will anyone survive Birch Shadow long enough to make their dangerous getaway?

Eden Monroe is visiting and talking about Who She Was Before #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #romantic suspense #legal assistant #greeting cards

1.      I was  working as a municipal legal assistant when I took early retirement, which meant I then only had one full-time job that included being a newspaper columnist, freelance writer and greeting card author. I became an author of fiction with my first novel in 2017, Dare To Inherit, and I do find that my experience in the legal field often finds its way into my storytelling. Some of my characters have been lawyers.

2.      To date all of my novels have been romantic suspense, but I would not hesitate to change lanes for another genre from time to time, if that’s what I was inspired to do.

3.      My latest is Dangerous Getaway, which was released in April 2022, and Sidelined will be released in August 2022.

4.      Right now I’m working on the third book of The Martel Sisters trilogy to be released in 2023/24. The books are about three identical sisters: Ginger the writer, Naomi the computer programmer and Alexandra the actress. They are beautiful, accomplished and spirited. Raised by a single parent and still guided by their Grandmother Bridger, these sisters face life … and love … with courage and pizazz.

5.      I am a voracious reader and enjoy anything that’s well written. It all feeds the imagination, fiction and non-fiction alike. There is always something new to learn, and it keeps me in the zone because everything I read influences my writing in one way or another. As the old adage goes, nothing is ever lost on a writer.

Sedducing the Photographer #MFRWHooks #BWLAuthor #Romance #Contemporary #magazine editor #photographer #her rules

Join the authors at #MFRWHooks here http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com for some great excerpts. Mine is found at https://wwweclecticwriter.blogspot.com  Seducing the Photographer

Blurb:

Meg is sure she’s made a mistake when she agrees to pick up and Injured Steve, the magazine group’s photographer from the airport. The first moment she saw him, the Blakefield Curse took effect. She fell in love and she was a forever woman. He wasn’t. Spending time with him over the weekend only cements her feelings. She has rules of life and she breaks everyone of them even the new ones she added that weekend.

Steve has been intrigued by Meg and he enjoys her blushes. He’s found ways to raise them but something more is happening here. When she leaves abruptly, he wants to track her down but his broken leg makes pursuit difficult. Now he must find a way to win her over and that takes some time and clever moves.

Excerpt:

Done.” Meg Blakefield closed her laptop and sank back in her chair. “Move. Friday at last.” Unlike her siblings and co-workers she refused to use the cliché. And unlike most of them she had no plans for the weekend beyond revising her rules of life. Should she scrap them and come up with a new set? Her present ones hadn’t taken her to her desired place, a home with the man of her dreams. All she’d earned from following those rules was a hand full of failed relationships.

Her elbows rested on the desk. The next issue of Good Lookin’ was at the printer’s, a perfect ending for an intense week of work and a very long day. She yawned.

The office door opened. One of her brothers stepped inside. “Good. You’re still here.”

She looked up. “You must be seeing things.”

“I need a favor.”

“Sure.” She wanted to bite her tongue a moment too late. She’d just mangled one of her rules/ Know what you’re agreeing to before you commit to do a favor or you’ll find yourself in trouble.

“Thanks. You can pick up Steve Martin at the airport tonight. His flight arrives around nine.”

“Wait a minute.” Meg’s shoulder muscles tensed. Once more she had leaped into a steaming cauldron. She stared at her brother. What did his cat in the cream smile mean? Was this some kind of sick joke? “You want me to do what?”

“Go to the airport. Meet Steve’s plane. Drive him home. He spoke each word is though he spoke to a child.

Meg’s emotions tumbled over each other like stones in a polishing tumbler. “I’m the last person he would want to see. Remember the scene I created three weeks ago.” Though she hadn’t shouted her accusations the words had flowed through the open office door. She would never forget Steve’s reaction. First an angry denial. Then he’d laughed and declared he would do no more photo shoots for Good Lookin’. His voice had boomed.

“Come on. Steve doesn’t hold grudges. Kiss and make up. He would enjoy that.”

“Right.” Meg glared at her brother. She couldn’t tell him or anyone about her first meeting with the photographer.

He’s the one. Her body had taken fire the moment their hands had touched. She knew she’d been taken by the Blakefield curse.

Every time he came near or when there was a casual touch her body reacted and the voice in her head repeated those fatal words. She blushed. His knowing green eyes showed he knew about the strong attraction. He always smiled and made a teasing remark. Though she’d become adept at avoiding him her feelings hadn’t changed.

Mark laughed. “Pick him up.”

“Remember how he reacted when I accused him of leaking the details of my exclusive interview to that witch editor of Beauty Spot.

Mark chuckled. “I do. He resigned. Then Allie explained how you shoot first and regret at leisure. He stayed. He looks on the incident as a joke.” Mark pressed his hands on the desk and leaned forward. “You never explained why you accused him.”

Tuesday's Writer's Tip Revelation #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #writing #revelation

Revelation or a secret revealed in present in many books. This takes some writing skills to pull this element off well. There must be an investigation, not exactly like those in mystery books but investigating and discovering a secret.

The secret must be something worth knowing. This secret must have a direct impct on the story that is unfolding.

There must be a build up forthe revelation. This is done in subtle ways. Just blurting it out might have an impact but only one that is temporary. Clues must be done with a subtle flavor.

The secret should be a simple one. No simpl explanation by a character should be done.

There must behints displayed about the secret. Don't telegraph what the secret is. Making this secret oneof two possibilities will make the story flat. There can only be one. This must be a genuine surprise to the reader.
