Friday - Unscheduled visit - Retreat #MFRWauthor

Today I'll be leaving for a writer's retreat with other members of Hudson Valley Romance Writers. Others will be taking their laptops and writing away on then. I'll probably retreat to my room and write in my old fashioned way. What now that has taken me into a largely unexplored area. Horses, horse farms and riding plus Zumba. Should be interesting. Will be back on Sunday,

Thursday's Opening Scene - The Doctor's Dilemma #MFRWauthor #medicalromance #sweetromance

Neal McKay put the last suture in the jagged cut on his patient’s calf. He stripped off his gloves and stepped back from the table. He glanced at the clock. Nearly three PM. He should have been home an hour ago, but the day hadn’t gone as planned. As the only doctor in town, this was the norm.
As usual, his day off had been filled with emergencies. A fractured tibia, a case of congestive heart failure, an acute allergy attack and now this.
They -- his wards -- should be at the house. He groaned and felt no more prepared for parenthood than he’d been the day he’d learned about his foster sister’s death -- a week after her funeral. Even if he’d known, he wouldn’t have been able to leave his patients to attend the service.
He groaned. The thought of being responsible for the twins’ care brought waves of insecurity. None of his experiences in the past had prepared him for this day.
“Do you want to do the dressing?”
Neal looked at the red-haired nurse. “He’s all yours.”
“Thanks, buddy. I owe you one.” Jack Gardner glared.
“If you’re talking about the patch job, just doing my thing.” Jack’s reaction made Neal chuckle. In college, they’d spent hours one-upping each other. He missed the days when they’d been like brothers.
Jack raised an eyebrow. “Is there a problem you need solved?”
            “You might say that.”
            “I’m not sure I’m qualified.”
“I don’t know about that.” Neal watched Patty Sue Crawford’s gaze center on his friend. He grinned. Maybe today was the turning point. Since his arrival in Prairie ten months before, she’d pursued him like a wrangler after a runaway steer.
“Can I go back to the ranch?’ Jack asked.
Neal frowned. “Only if you promise to avoid horses and cattle until the stitches are out.”
            “How long?”
            “A week.”
            “I can do that.”
Neal doubted the truth of the statement. Since Jack’s return to the ranch last month, he seemed bent on proving he was Cowboy of the Year.
“I’d rather admit you for the night. Give you some intravenous antibiotics and injections for pain. Once the local wears off, you’re going to know you’ve been hurt.”
Jack slid to the edge of the table. “No hospital. What if I stay at my grandmother’s?”
“Might work, especially after I tell Miss Hattie to tie you to the bed. Your injury is nothing to take lightly.”
Jack laughed. “Grandmother will see that I obey orders. She should have been a general. You coming to the barbecue Saturday?”
“I wouldn’t miss it,” Patty Sue said.
Jack looked away. “Honey, your presence is a given. I meant Doc here.”
Neal shrugged. “I’ll see how things go. My wards arrive today. I’ll probably be too busy learning how to be a daddy.”
“I can’t imagine you with a pair of doggies.”
Neither could Neal, but he wasn’t about to admit it. “I don’t have a choice.”
“Guess not. I kind of envy you. You’ve achieved fatherhood without the M word.” Jack chuckled. “Bring the doggies with you. The ladies will love them.” He shook his head. “Never thought you’d be saddled with kids. They’ll make big changes in your life.”
Patty Sue opened a dressing kit. “I think Neal -- Dr. McKay will be a wonderful father.”
How did she manage to make a deliberate slip of the tongue seem natural?  “Thank you, Ms. Crawford. See that Jack has a copy of the discharge instructions and make an appointment for Friday.” He waved to Jack. “I’ll call the prescriptions to the pharmacy and have them delivered to Miss Hattie’s.”
“See you and the doggies Saturday,” Jack called. “I’m sure Grandmother expects to see you there.”
Neal nodded. He’d be at the barbecue with the twins or Miss Hattie would come for him. The town’s matriarch was used to having her way.
He strode down the hall to his office. Parties at the Gardner mansion were events to be experienced, but he wasn’t sure he could handle an evening of listening to the benefits of life in Prairie.
He had to go -- home. But there were things he had to complete before he left. He welcomed the delay in facing this new responsibility and sat at his desk to phone the drugstore and write a note on Jack’s chart.
Home -- the twins -- his legacy. He groaned. Jack was right.
Two babies would force changes in his lifestyle that he wasn’t ready to make. He wasn’t even sure where to begin.
Instead of heading home, he reached for a stack of letters he’d received in response to his queries about another temporary position. The time to move had come. A year was long enough to stay in one place.
But he had a family now. His choice of where to head next had to include them.  How could he make a home for the twins?  He’d been raised as a foster child in a series of placements. A football scholarship had allowed him to escape the last foster home where he’d endured three years of being treated as an outsider. He slammed up barriers against the memories of those days.
Those memories brought no answers to his current dilemma. His lifestyle didn’t lend itself to an instant family. The longest he’d stayed in one place had been the four years in college and the same amount in medical school. Every time he considered staying in one place, his anxiety level peaked.

He shoved the letters in a drawer and left the office. He’d do his best for Sherri’s babies but he couldn’t promise them a stable life and a real family. With this thought firmly in place, he left the clinic and jogged down the street toward his rented house to face his foster sister’s attempt to turn him into a family man.

Wednesday's Writer's Tip - Finding Your Voice #MFRWauthor #writing

Discovering your own voice is important to a writer. Though your voice may take turns if you write in  a number of subgenres the basic voice remains the same.

Write the kind of story that sets you on fire. For me this is writing what I like to read and not venturing into the genres that I seldom read. If you're enthusiastic about your project this helps develop your voice.

Using personal experience when you first begin tw write. My first books involved nursing a subject I knew a bit about having worked as a nurse for a number of years. Another book my first cozy mystery had some elements of something that had happened to me. This helped create the characters and made the book seem real. I believe this was the first hint of my style. Takeing a memory and turning it into fiction. This still happens.

While revising, listed to your inner voice. For me this never happens when I writing the first draft. That means get the words down and the words don't really matter but the thread does. Later when I'm revising is the time to look at the way I use the language. Sometimes it means ripping up a scene and restructuring that element of the story. I've learned to do this and know what I write isn't carved in stone. So don't be afraid of that voice that says you need to rethink or revise this section,

Tuesday's Inspiration - Writer's Block Be Gone #MFRWauthor

Writer's Block is something that at some time in a writer's career occurs. What begins as "I don't know where this story is going" to This story is a piece of the worst drivel." When this happens the tendency is to go in circles like being on one of those multi lane traffic circles and not being sure which lane will take you in the direction you want to go.

I once experienced the one that said "Hang up your computer and find a life." I stopped writing for a year. I wasn't happy during that time. So one day I sat down and began again with reading books such as Bird By Bird by Anne Lamott and also books about the techniques of writing. Now most people don't take this kind of a path and don't take a year to realize they're doing what they're supposed to be doing - writing.

The best thing I did during that time of blockage was to read those books and also to read books that I had loved and explore authors long lists of books. The other was just to live and suddenly I began to take notes about things I'd seen or that I'd read. Some erupted into poetry and others meant nothing. Soon the block had evaporated and I found the right lane to escape the circle.

Meandering On Monday with Janet Lane Walters #MFRWauthor #Poetry #amwriting

Meander 1 _Poem - Primative Dance

Primative Dance

Shadows of the night surround us bringing fears
From infancy. Terrors of alone existance
Reach and hold us as heart beats thunder, knock.
Pulse our bodies to their tune. And the fire grows
Within sending flames to chase those shadows.
So we dance upon each other to the rhythm
Of the drums and the flickering flames flare higher,
Heart pount -- drum beat ppflare heat --flesh step movement.
Pattern grown --moment passes -- echoes --
Silent drums and ashes - remnants of the dance

Meander 2 - Preparing for another grandchild to graduate from high school. Time seems to fly since this last of the four living now in Florida was born. There are three other graduations either happened or pending. Grandson has finished his 2 year associates in electrical engineering. Son-in-law soon to finish his Masters in councelling. Granddaughter soon to have her Bachelor's degree. Busy time for scholars. Means another trip to Florida and I'm making arrangements for the flight.

Meander 3. - Am finishing typing on the last two of the At First Sight series and am heavy into a book where I am only the vehicle and hopefully I will have this finished by June. Much to do and much to learn. But I will and the blocking seems to be successful at this point.

Sunday's Book - The Doctor's Dilemma #MFRWauthor #contemporary romance #sweet romance #medical romance

Take one doctor who’s made a career of temporary positions and avoiding commitment. Add a nurse who dreams of security and a settled life. Stir in infant twins bequeathed to him by his dead foster sister. Pour them into a small Texas town that wants the doctor to stay. To Dr. Neal McKay, it’s a prescription for a dilemma.

This was a really fun read. The main characters wear believable, endearing, vulnerable & loving. The supporting characters were funny, nosy, busy bodies & totally in your face but in a loving way. Once again this is fiction if an author were to research every single thing that they said/wrote in passing no book would ever be published they would all be in school learning the correct procedures. Holy cow people. FICTION! Remember creative licensing. Enough said. All in all a cute storyline with solid characters.

 Blood Ties

The Santa Barbara Channel holds a closely guarded secret…

She had more than just her mission…
Sy’s rotation on land as a dolphin shifter couldn’t have come at a better time. With her best friend missing and no answers forthcoming, it was time to take matters into her own hands. And with the resources at the Save Blue Water organization, finding her friend would be a whole lot easier. Except …something sinister is going on inside SBW, something deadly, and Sy finds herself at the center of danger.

The last thing he needed was bullets and bombs…

Noah Nelson spent every minute trying to forget the war while fighting his PTSD, but jumping in front of a bullet was second nature. It had nothing to do with the fact the target was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. Or that she was naked. But suddenly he’s caught up in her world, protecting her from unforeseen threats, and falling in love … but Sy’s got a secret that may rip them apart. Forever.

Risky Tide
The Santa Barbara Channel holds a closely guarded secret…

They sent her in unprepared…
Katherine expected more than a welcome handshake and a name badge after surviving a shark attack before she arrived at SBW headquarters. But due to the recent violence she is sent along to join the Exchange Team without training to handle the midnight break-ins at an Orlando marine mammal park. Things turn bad when the memory of almost dying in the mouth of a Great White triggers a panic attack, forcing the team leader to suspend the exchange schedule.

He didn’t need an untrained team…
Peal is a SBW Team Leader with more problems than answers. A polluted lagoon, dead dolphins, and two new team members….one, a trigger-happy transfer he doesn’t trust, one, a dark-haired beauty he can’t stop thinking about. And as if that wasn’t enough, the mob doesn’t like Peal staking-out the lagoon they’ve been dumping medical waste in and sends in their hitman to stop the SBW Team.
Time is running out…
If Peal can manage to keep them alive, he still has to convince Katherine they can have more than just one passionate night together. But SBW might have something to say about that as any minute Katherine could be transferred, pulled out of Peal’s life forever.

Lethal Tide
Dolphin Shore Shifters Book 4

The Santa Barbara Channel holds a closely guarded secret…

Dolphin shifter Conley Nash began his second three-year mission armed with a kick-ass agenda and an attitude to match. Since their team leader was killed, the men in SBW field ops have lost their nerve. Determined to restore the hard line, Conley can’t wait to show them how it’s done, facing down a greedy oil company in Long Beach. Until Conley meets his new partner…and finds his powers of persuasion need work.

First-time shifter Betty Brett can’t believe she finally made it into the male-centric field ops team. Since the first female agent was murdered, before Betty goes solo, she’ll spend four months teamed with an experienced operative. But did it have to be Conley? No matter how temptingly handsome he is, Betty refuses to take grief from a trigger-happy male and certainly not one whose knuckles drag the ground.

When the oil company resorts to violence protecting its illegal fracking operation, Conley finds himself out-gunned. Either he and Betty compromise, fast, or they’ll be dead before they can unravel the perplexing feelings they have for each other.

Friday - Who She Was Before featuring C J Matthew #MFRWauthor

1.       What were you in your life before you became a writer? Did this influence your writing?

I was born in an Air Force base hospital and spent the next 18 years moving all over the US and around the world with my pilot dad, a mom who worked part-time, and my younger sister.
After attending high school and college in southern California, I married and worked and traveled in the medical marketing field while raising a son and daughter.

All the travel, adaptations, and multi-cultural experiences gave me a terrific foundation for a writing career which I began in 2007, several years before I retired.

Readers will also find a military influence in many of my heroes and heroines.

2 Are you genre specific or general? Why? I don't mean genres like romance, mystery, fantasy etc. There are many subgenres of the above.

As an author, I’m delighted to be here on Eclectic Writer since I am one and enjoy combining sub-           genres.

First and foremost, I’m a romance writer. Remember in Romancing the Stone when Jack Colton    tells Joan Wilder that he has finished reading her book? Joan says, “Then you know how they all          end.”

My paranormal romance series, Dolphin Shore Shifters, features a Santa Barbara pod of shape   shifting             dolphins and each book has enough danger to also qualify as a suspense story.

My next series, The Paladin Group, is like Scandal meets the A-Team, but no one is        sleeping with the President. The Paladins are a group of wounded Air Force Pararescuemen,             founded by a female pilot who was rescued. Men and women warriors turned lawyers and investigators committed to continuing rescue work. Deadly Reboot, the Paladin Group book 1 is a       military romantic suspense.

I also write Contemporary military romance and Fantasy/time travel.

2.       Did your reading choices have anything to do with your choice of a genre or genres?

Absolutely! I love reading most any paranormal romance especially with vampires and shifters.    And I also love most forms of suspense stories as well as military romance. When I decided to           write my own paranormal series, I felt I needed to chose a very different kind of shifter.

3.       What's your latest release?

Lethal Tide, Dolphin Shore Shifters book 4, was due to release earlier this week, March 30, 2016.             New shifter Betty and returning shifter Conley’s first field ops assignment together takes place          mostly in Long Beach, California. Since I’ve lived there, I was able to incorporate fun places like     the Queen Mary and a southern California beach or two.

4.       What are you working on now?

Next I’d planned to return to the Paladin Group series. I’ve been excited to write Survival Reboot,             the Paladin Group book 2 which is almost completely outlined and stars a wounded female AF         survival instructor. After that book, I scheduled myself to alternate back and forth      between those   two series for the remainder of this year.

But the same day I sent Lethal Tide to my editor, Grus, one of my dolphin shifter characters,       started bugging me. He played a supporting role in two of my earlier Shore Shifter books—and          admittedly, I put him through rough times. Now he insists he’s earned his own book. Soooo…I’m    currently writing Toxic Tide, Dolphin Shore Shifter book 5, which is Grus and Heather’s story.          As a hero of mine, Grus is in for an even rougher ride, struggling with his personal demons,             facing his worst enemy, and falling for Heather, a kick ass, smart-mouthed, human woman.
