Contrast is an effective way of writing. Using two characters or two situations that are totally different can add to the tension in a scene. Also effective are startling similarities. Using then and now similarities or differences can add to a story. These can be effectively used in stories with little plot. Contrasts that are real or are only almost are effective in writing stories.
