Another type of story that moves beyoud plot is allegory. This type of story has that something that shows something beyond the surface. Of course, myths are often allegories and we've all read Aesop's fables. Those are simple. In a novel to write an allegory takes a lot of effort. Often each character plays a certain role. The wounded hero, the bright one, the money man.
Oneof the dangers in using allegory in the story is that the message can take over and turn the characters into cardboard figures. Another problem is that the symols must make sense at all times. Still, a loose type of akkegory is found in many literary stories.
