Tuesday's Writer's Tip Knowing When To Stop #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #writing #the End # when to Stop

You've finished writing the story and all the problems are solved. But now you must let those characters go and you don't want to. They have become friends, closer to you than anyone, Unfortunately, the story has ended. You write The End. Then something else occurs and you dither. We've all read books that end and end and end. At one time this was the norm in telling a story. Writing the end meant the writer could dither and tell the reader all those things that happened in their characters' futures. Don't fall into the trap. When the story ends, stop.

Another way to end is to make hints about a coming sequel. There may be wore stories in this world. I remember reading the second book in a series that began with a recap of the first book and was essentially the ending of the last book. Some worlds need more than one story but the author is wise if there are other stories in this world to make them self contained and perhaps reference what happened to the characters of another book in this world. Make the ending clean. Then start another story in that world fresh.
