Thursday's Third Scene from Past Betrayals, Past Loves #MFRWauthor #Books We Love LTD #Paranormal #Egypt

As Seshat walked away, Mermeshu watched the graceful sway of her hips. He had to possess her. Though Intef had spoken of the advantages of a marriage to the nomarch's daughter by his first wife, Mermeshu had no desire for Nefru. He'd seen the courtesy Seshat had shown her father. Unlike Nefru, Seshat had lingered to make sure of her father's comfort. She was sweet and dutiful, yet there was a banked fire in her eyes. He wanted to be the one to stir the embers into flames.
She had none of Nefru's boldness. The way the older sister ogled made him feel like a slave on the block. He believed he could take Nefru in the garden, then watched while Intef enjoyed her lush body.
"The day has been long." He yawned. "I'll see you both in the morning." He strode back to the house. Let Intef have Nefru. His friend had a liking for short women with rounded hips and melon breasts.
Mermeshu was awakened by Intef. "My friend, you missed an enlightening time. You'll have no trouble claiming Nefru."
Mermeshu eyed his friend's rumpled kilt. "Seems she prefers you."
Intef laughed. "She likes men. All she spoke of was you."
"And you encouraged her."
"What else can I do?"
"Marry her and try for the Double Crown."
Intef shook his head. "I could, but I'm a practical lam. You have the army behind you. I'll be content to be your vizier."
How often had they discussed this plan? Their schemes were nearing completion, but he no longer desired to see them reach fruition. "I...."
Intef nodded. "Desire the beautiful Seshat. Fear not, you can have them both. Once Nefru gives you a son, you need not spend time with her."
Mermeshu nodded. He wasn't certain he wanted any woman but Seshat.
"Let me think about this new direction. We came for Sehetep's support not the daughters. We should see what he offers before I go any further with a courtship of Nefru."
Intef clapped Mermeshu's shoulder. "You must do what is best for the Two Lands."

Wednesday The Taurus Scorpio Connection #MFRWHooks #Books We Love LTD #MFRWauthor #medical romance

The Taurus-Scorpio Connection (Opposites In Love)

Join me with other MFRW Authors on a blog hop and discover some great books. Find Them Here   http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com

BLURB:
Her mother was a hired nanny and her father the Mellwood Bank. This is the way Taurus Laurel Richmond describes her family. After burning out as a nurse with an international health agency, she returns to Eastlake, the one place she where she felt connected. She studied nursing here and made a number of friends. Her one problem is her wealth. Soon she will receive a fortune. But money hasn’t given her the things she wants, a home, a family and love. Since a chance visit after summer camp with a friend made there, her idea of a man to love has been Alex Carter.
Alex Carter is a Scorpio, a single dad with a five year old son. He’s a general practitioner at Eastlake Community Hospital. While attracted to Laurel, he has one problem. His ex and now dead wife had a lot of money and little sense. Drugs and her fast friends were her life. She abandoned their son who cried for hours until his father returned. Alex has no love for women with money. Attraction or not he refuses to admit he’s falling for Laurel.
With the help of Alex’s son, Laurel sets out to prove to Alex she’s in town for the long haul and she will make the perfect wife and mother.

Review: Janet Lane Walters has written a charming tale. As a child, Laurel Richmond was trapped in a car with her dead parents for hours. After losing them, Laurel's next of kin was a bank. Laurel hides her immense wealth, traveling internationally as a nurse, helping the sick. She decides to settle in Eastlake, a small community. She once summered with her friend Megan, developing a huge crush on Megan's brother, Alex, who is now a divorced doctor raising his young son Johnny. Alex is leary of wealth because his rich ex-wife had no time for him or Johnny, but Johnny takes to Laurel right away. The glimpses of a family life that Laurel experiences with Johnny and Alex leave her longing for her dreams to become reality. Can she get Alex to realize that money may bring power, but love offers peace?

EXCERPT:

The annoying ring of the phone interrupted a strange yet beautiful dream. Alex Carter groped for his cell and mumbled a greeting. Instead of the husky voice of the answering service, hearing his sister’s voice confused him. She spewed a stream of words with the force of a flash flood. “Megan, slow down. Do you know what time it is?”
“Six a.m. and I have to work and Lauren arrives this morning and I was supposed to meet her but I have to work and can’t go so do me a favor and go to the airport and be there by ten when her flight arrives.”
Alex pushed to a sitting position. “It’s Wednesday.”
     “Very good.”
The sarcasm in her voice made him clench his teeth. “Brat.”
“I know you’re off and since I can’t go and neither can Jenessa, you have to and just think you can do this favor for me without rearranging your office hours. Were you planning something special with Johnny?”
“Noooo.” He dragged out his response. Who was Lauren?
“Please say you’ll go. When she called the other day I was so excited about her coming here I never thought about who would meet her.”
Convinced her non-stop to take a breath delivery wasn’t healthy, he interrupted her stream of words. “I’ll do it.”
     “Great. See you.”
“Wait a minute," he shouted to gain her attention. “How will I know her?”
“Brown hair, brown eyes, tall, slender. She was here the summer Mom got sick. She roomed with Jenessa and me at Grantley.”
     “My memories are vague.”
     “Alzheimer’s so soon.”
”I’ll remember that.” Alex stretched. “Once I have her what will I do with her?” Megan’s giggle pressed a warning button. “No way, sister mine.”
     “We’ll see.”
He imagined her cat in the cream smile. “Megan.”
“I’ll leave my key under the mat. Have her call the minute you arrive in town. See you.”
Alex held the receiver until he heard a dial tone. Why did he have the feeling Megan had just orchestrated a crescendo in his life? His sister had a habit of trying to match every unmarried acquaintance, friend or relative with someone. He shook his head. Being involved in one of her schemes was the last thing he wanted.

Tuesday's Writer's Tip - From Idea to Finished Book - After Mss Is Sent Off #MFRWauthor #Books. We Love LTD #New book

Forgot this in the progression. This should come right along with starting to consider promotional areas.  The book has been sent off. Now, some people sit and wait until they hear from everyone they're queried. What happens to their writing. They stagnate.

Starting the next book is important. A good thing about this is that you have something to take away the pain of rejections. There's a new book to be created. Waiting loses momentum. Selling one book is great but these days, publishers want to know that there's something new in your pipeline. And with the wait time of many submissions, you could have the next book at least rough drafted and sometimes nearly done.

Part of the problem, some writers have is they hate those rejections and they can't think beyond themselves. I always have at least one book outlines and ready to begin when I finish one. For me this always gives me hope. Hope is something every writer needs. You can't think, I've written the next best seller and daydream about what this will mean. The next best seller should be the new one you've started when you've sent off the last.

Meandering On Monday with Janet Lane Walters #MFRWauthor #Books We Love Ltd #Poem #writing #meeting

Meander 1 Poem - a Six line Stanza

I see you creeping upon me
With straightened back and bended knee.
I tremble and I want to flee
To hide my head.
I wish I weren't a golfer's tee
But made of lead.

Meander 2 - Thoughts after a Meeting - We met today and talked about the retreat and about the coming contest and ways to promote. Some of us went to lunch. We became acquainted with a new member. Then we heard about the rabbit taken up residence in one of our fried's house. We plotted ways to disappear the rabbit. We're writers so some of our ideas were intriguing. Laughed a lot and that's good.

Meander 3 - The Pisces Virgo Connection is working much better. A few things to clear up, but that will happen when I get to next drafts. Have to finish the rough draft. Still a way to go but this will happen nicely.

Friday's Guest featuring A. M. Westerling #MFRWauthor #BooksWeLoveLTD #Who She Was Before #Historical romance

1     What were you in your life before you became a writer? Did this influence your writing?

I have a degree in chemical engineering from the Universty of Calgary. I worked for a number of years in Alberta's oil and gas industry then my husband and I decided to strike out on our own and formed our own engineering company. We got bought out a number of years back and I (quite happily!) retired. I suppose the biggest thing I notice about not having a regular day job anymore is that I now have a more flexible schedule to write when I please as opposed to only evenings or lunch hours. I think my technical background makes me detail oriented as far as research and I want my books to be historically accurate. Also, a manuscript is much like an engineering drawing, requiring many revisions during the writing process to get the final best product.

2.                 2  Are you genre specific or general? Why? I don't mean genres like romance, mystery, fantasy etc. There are many subgenres of the above.
I write historical romance because that's what I like to read. I don't have a favorite time period and I've covered many different eras, everything from Prohibition to the Viking age to the Regency period. To tell you the truth, I'm not really interested in writing anything contemporary - I like history and really really enjoy the research as it gives me story ideas. For example, in A Heart Enslaved, I discovered a slave could buy their freedom so that became a goal for the heroine, Gisela who has been captured by the hero, Thorvald in a raid.

3. Did your reading choices have anything to do with your choice of a genre or genres?
In my later childhood years, I read a lot of science fiction ie Ray Bradbury and Isaac Asimov and action adventure stories ie Alistair McLean. Then thanks to my father, I started reading books by Catherine Cookson which got me on the historical path. About the same time, I discovered my mom's Harlequin romances. Historical romance from authors such as Kathleen Woodiwiss, Rosemary Rogers and Bertrice Small really came into its own during my university years and for me it's the perfect blend - history and romance!

4. What's your latest release?

Barkerville Beginnings, Book 4 of the Canadian Historical Brides Collection put out by BWL Publishing i honor of Canada's 150th birthday.

5. What are you working on now?

I have a couple of projects on the go - Freed By Love, another Viking romance, this time set in Vinland in the year 1000 with Maria, a blacksmith's daughter, and Geir, a runaway slave. Also Her Seaswept Scoundrel, set in the early 1800s withHeath, a naval captain whose ship has been seconded to act as a convict transport to Australia and Leah, one of the convicted women.

6. Where can we find you?

Thursday's Third Scene Whispers From Yesteryear #MFRWauthor #BooksWeLoveLTD #Paranormal #Reincarnation

July 1755
Too late. Too late.
Jonathan Reed stopped for a brief rest. For two days since he’d seen signs of the Ottawas in the forest, the refrain had echoed in his thoughts. After he’d discovered the dismembered bodies of their captives, he’d known Rene DuBarri led the band of warriors. Such brutality was the man’s signature.
Dread filled his thoughts. The Long House. Corn Dreamer. The men and women who had befriended him were in danger. He feared he wouldn’t arrive in time with the warning.
He rubbed dirt into his hair to disguise the color. Hair of Fire was his name among the clan.
After gulping water from the skin he carried, he looked for signs of the enemy’s passage. Another mile or two and he would reach his goal. Though most of the warriors had traveled north, if he arrived in time, those who had remained could hold off the enemy until the women and children escaped.
The silence of the forest troubled him. No bird songs, no noises that signaled the presence of small animals. His fears rushed to the surface.
Too late. Too late.
No, he prayed. For with the clan and in the Long House, he’d found healing for his spirit and had learned to forgive himself. The guilt he’d felt after his wife’s death by her own hand had turned him into a wanderer. Corn Dreamer had helped him find peace and had taught him the skills of a healer.
Too late. Too late.
He pushed his fears to a corner of his mind and slowed to a walk. With caution, he slipped from tree to tree, senses alert and prayers forgotten. He was close enough to hear the songs of the women and the children’s laughter. He felt a chill as icy as the winds of winter.
He staggered into the clearing and stared at the ruined Long House. Bitter acid burned in his throat. He had arrived too late.
As he stared at the scene of the massacre, he saw the broken bodies of his friends. Two warriors lay atop several of the enemy. He crept from the shadow of the trees and examined the strangers. Ottawas from DuBarri’s pack.
He edged toward the Long house. Sprawled bodies of women, infants and the older boys caused him to weave a serpentine path to the entrance of the bark-covered building. Just inside the entrance, he halted. A cry rose in his throat.
"Corn Dreamer." The man who’d taught him about medicine lay sprawled among the furs. The gaping hole in his chest told Jonathan what had been done.
‘Twas an honor. He sank to his knees. How could such a death be deemed an honor?
Swift on the heels of grief, anger rose. He backed from the Long House. This time he examined the bodies for the one he feared to find.
A soft cry startled him. He studied the clearing and saw no one but the dead. The sound came again. He strode toward the trees. Gray Squirrel Chatters huddled in the brush. Dried blood on her head showed where she’d been struck.
"It’s Hair of Fire. Where are the children? Where are the Willows?"
"Gone. Those who stink of fish have taken them."
"Where?"
She shrugged. "They do not have Willow Who Bends. She went to gather medicines."
"In the forest?"
"To the place where those who gave her a name grow. North by the stream."
He lifted the elderly woman and carried her to the cave where last fall he and the warriors had killed a bear. Though he wanted to search for the one whose image filled his thoughts, he owed Gray Squirrel Chatters care for the meals she’d shared with him. He cleaned her wounds and returned to the long house for furs, food and water. Only then did he set out to look for Willow Who Bends.
Too late. Too late. The refrain beat in his thoughts. Not this time, he vowed.

Wednesday The Aries Libra Connection #MFRWHooks #MHRWauthor #BooksWe Love Ltd #Medical romance

The Aries - Libra Connection (Opposites in Love Book 1)

Join me and other authors in a blog hop. Click here to find all  http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com
My book is a medical romance. She's union and he's management.

BLURB:

Jenessa is Aries, a nurse, union advocate and likes a good fight. Eric is Libra, Director of Nursing, and believes in compromise.

Can these two find a way to uncover the underhanded events at the hospital? They’re on opposite sides but the attraction between them is strong. She’s a widow who fought to save her husband’s life during a code. She feels guilty because the love she and her husband shared had died before his death. He assisted at the code but he feels guilty since he was the one who was responsible for the short staffing the night her husband died.

Now they face falling in love and trying to solve the problems between the nurse’s union and the president of the hospital’s Board who wants a take over of the hospital by his hospital group. Is their connection strong enough to survive?

EXCERPT:

Fifteen minutes later, in her apartment across the street, she stood in the shower. Hot water uncoiled her tight muscles, but not her thoughts. Would the hospital Board really name Sandra Wallace, a woman disliked by most of the nurses, as the new director? With Jim Bishop as Board president, the choice seemed likely.
After pulling on an over-sized blue tee shirt, she headed to the kitchen and zapped the spicy chicken dish she should have eaten for lunch. Though she considered working on her Master’s thesis, she felt too tired to read the stack of articles on the desk.
The apartment door slammed. She looked up and saw her roommate. Megan kicked off her shoes. “Are you ready for a bomb? Guess what the Board has done.”
“Sandra.”
“Is out.” Megan grinned. “Josh and I were at the Cove for dinner. Sam introduced Eric Bradshaw. Would you believe he’s the new Director of Nursing? And what a hunk he is.”
Jenessa pushed back long strands of dark brown hair that had come loose from her braid. “You’re kidding.”
“Not one bit.”
“It’s a ploy. Can’t you hear Mr. Bishop’s laughter? We’ll give the girls a man to drool over. That’ll shut them up.”
“Come on, Jen. At least they didn’t name Her.” Megan headed across the living room, discarding pieces of clothes as she walked. “He’s every woman’s dream. Tall, blond, broad shoulders. I positively drooled. He’s got the greatest dimples. That’s because he’s a Libra.”
Trust Megan to ask his sun sign, Jenessa thought. Her roommate’s description confirmed her suspicions of the Board’s motives. “Sounds like you’re adding him to your string.”
“Wrong. A Libra and a Pisces. Odd couple material.” Megan’s blonde curls bounced with the force of her denial. “He’s for you, my Aries friend. Remember what I always say. An opposition can be exciting.”
Not again, Jenessa thought. For the past year, Megan’s attempts at matchmaking seemed designed to drive her crazy. “Megan, no.”
“You can’t be alone forever.”
“You’re surviving.”
“Alone I’m not. My problem is too many and being unable to hurt anyone.” She shrugged. “Give it a shot.”
Jenessa frowned. Megan and she had been friends since they were five, but there were things she couldn’t tell her… Things about Chuck and the marriage.
“I’m union. He’s management. Can you see me falling for someone from the opposition?”
“And what will you be when you finish your Master’s?”

“Not here. I’ll work for a doctor. Head to the city. Become a consultant.” She followed the trail of clothes and gathered them as she walked. “With my reputation here, they won’t promote me.”

Tuesday's Writer's Tip After the End Writing from Idea to Book #MFRWauthor #Booksweloveltd #Writing #Revision

You've written the end of the book and breathe a sigh or relief. But you're not done. These days editors want to see a book that's almost publishable. There are some places you need to check in your story.

First is the spelling and grammar. Sadly the Spellcheck doesn't pick up every errata in the mss. So what you need to do is do a read and find those words that are really words but don't belong there. Put in the periods, question marks and commas you've missed. Question marks is my big issue. I tend to forget them in things like phrases that are really questions but not spelled out like Really. when I mean Really? You know the sort of thing.

Second comes the plot. Read just to see if you've tied up all the loose ends. Really troubles me when I read a book and there's a thread left dangling. Are the major scenes played out to the greatest degree. Sometimes we rush over a scene that needs expanded.

Third comes Characters - Checking to see that the names of the characters remain the same. If they change, there should be a logical reason. Also make sure their hair and eyes are the same throughout the book. Does their dialogue sound unique to each character. Try reading just the dialogue sections and see if the characters speak with the same voice. If so a bit of work is needed.

Last comes the setting - Are the places mentioned shown with enough detail to make the reader visualize the place? Is there so many words describing the setting that the reader gets bogged down and forgets the story. That was never my problem. When I began writing, my characters existed in a cacuum. These books were nurse romance stories and I was a nurse. The hospital was so familiar to me, I forgot most readers weren't nurses and needed to see the setting through the use of the senses.

So there you have it. You've done the revisions and sent the book off. But you're not done with this book yet.
