Friday Priscilla Brown is Visiting and Talking about Characters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Writing #Characters

 Day 1 Characters

2. Heroes, Heroines, Villains. Which are your favorite to write?  heroes

3. Heroes. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or plain imagination create the man you want every reader to love? Do they come before the plot or after you have the idea for the story? Magazine ads and editorial style pages, composite creations from various real life sightings and eavesdropping and lots of imagination. They come before the plot since I am a' pantser' not a 'plotter'. See #7 below

4. Heroines. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or imagination create the woman you want the reader to root for? Do they appear before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?  Almost always from imagination.
  Your favorite book? Hot Ticket

5. Villains or villainesses or an antagonist, since they don’t always have to be the bad guy or girl. They can be a person opposed to the hero’s or heroine’s obtaining their goal. How do you choose one? How do you make them human? I think I don't actually choose one, he/she pops up in the plot and gets developed into a villlain possessing some little quirk or attitude or activity.

6.  Sorry Janet, the computer stole the first words of the question.
hero, heroine and or the villain? Dancing the Reel. Hero is a Scottish ferryhand who may be more than he seems. Heroine is a visiting Australian journalist. Villain is his mother.

7. What are you working on now? A contemporary romance set in Finland and Italy with a hero based in on a real person I met in a cafe in Helsinki.

8. How can people find you? https://priscillabrownauthor.com

9. Who are your favorite authors?  I have many - any writer in any genre who can keep me turning the pages.

Friday's Guest - Priscilla Brown #MFRWauthor #BooksWeLoveLTD #contemporary romance #Australia #NewSouthWales

1. What’s your genre and do you write in more than one?  Contemporary romance is currently my sole genre.

2. Did you choose your genre or did it choose you? It chose me. Some years ago, as Australian correspondent for UK Writers’ News, I attended a Romance Writers of Australia conference. I left the conference inspired to write romance novels, something I’d never considered in either genre or length.

3. Is there any genre you’d like to try? Or is there one you wouldn’t? Historical appeals, specifically the medieval period, but at the moment I am daunted by the amount of research necessary. Not mystery, fantasy.

4. What fiction do you read for pleasure? A wide variety, including romance, historical, light crime and general (non-genre) novels

5. Tell me a bit about yourself and how long you’ve been writing. I’m based in regional New South Wales. I’ve been writing for many years; my published career started with non-fiction magazine articles, and continued via short stories in various genres to book-length romance.

6. Which of your characters is your favourite? A male favourite is Lee, chief protagonist in the forthcoming romance Class Act, because of his significant character development. From a man held hostage by guilt and regrets and coping only through rigid control of every aspect of his life, he comes to realise that he can break free and permit himself to love.

7. Are there villains in your books and how were they created?  Not villains in the sense of being criminal, but the stories do contain a character whose malicious actions or motives are important to the plot. I don’t know how they were created—they arrived ready-made to speak, and wrote themselves in!

8. What are you working on now? The missing middle of a story that has its beginning and ending.

 9. What’s your latest release and how did the idea arrive? Silver Linings is a romantic comedy born of my enrolment in a silver jewellery class, about which there was nothing either romantic or comedic so I invented a more enjoyable experience.

Saturday's Blurbs features Books by Priscilla Brown #MFRWauthor #sweetromance #contemporary

Where the Heart Is
Men are off recently-divorced Cristina’s essentials list, so no way does romance figure in her expectations of her working holiday as English/Italian interpreter for a conference at Lovers’ Lagoon, a luxury Caribbean resort. She wants to discover why the resort has not settled a huge three-year outstanding debt owed to her father, previously its Australian representative. Meanwhile, she’s fighting attraction to the resort’s pilot, who aims to put himself at the top of her list. Can this zany charmer break through lovely Cristi’s defenses and set free her warm and funny persona? But is flying merely to pass the time between his activities as a playboy holding secrets?

Hot Ticket
What kinky no-hoper would attach his business cards to the sexiest bras in a luxury boutique? Ambitious Sydney lawyer Olivia, seconded to Darwin for six months after ending a toxic affair with her boss, looks forward to a rest from men. Yet curiosity leads her to investigate the guy at the cafĂ© identified on his card. Expecting the tropical climate to be the steamiest aspect of her new life, she’s shocked by the kick of heat when Callum serves her coffee topped by a chocolate heart. Surely such a charmer would not be so romantically challenged he needs to use his cards as date bait. Callum doesn’t have time or inclination for a relationship, but he might make an exception for this classy blonde.
Resolving the enigma of the cards, Olivia learns Callum is not only the waiter she’d assumed. He learns she’s a PhD, out of his league for a boy who left school at fourteen. While the friendship they’d both intended blossoms into love, her departure looms. He knows she’s in line for a law partnership; if he begs her to stay and she does, she may regret this opportunity. Stay or go—her decision.

Friday's Guest featuring Priscilla Brown #MFRWauthor

What were you in your life before you became a writer? Did this influence your writing? I think I wanted to call myself a writer since I won a short story competition while in primary school. As an adult, my writing has struggled alongside seven different paying occupations, some of which have been worked concurrently and all of which from time to time have had to take priority over crafting prose. To date, I’ve used two of these jobs as backgrounds for novels, but, other than that, I don’t think they’ve influenced what or how I write.

Are you genre specific or general? Why? I don’t mean genres like romance, mystery, fantasy, etc. There are many subgenres of this above. Specific—I write sweet contemporary romances showcasing sparkling protagonists, with a fairly low heat level but with sexual and sensual tension. Why? Hard! Maybe because I’m comfortable with characters who are not really larger than life and exist in believable circumstances and locations. Perhaps I should emerge from my comfort zone!

Did your reading choices have anything to do with your choice of genre or genres? Not initially, possibly the other way round. Some years ago, as the Australian correspondent for UK Writers News, I attended a Romance Writers of Australia conference. Impressed, I decided I could write in this genre, and added romances to my already eclectic reading choices. I made the switch from short stories and articles to book-length romances.

What’s your latest release? Hot Ticket, December 2016

What are you working on now? A series of three stories, all contemporary romances, in which each has reunion as its theme.
