I happen to enjoy medical suspense stories but as I was reading them, I began to think. The story was always titled Code Blue but the first publisher didn't like that and changed the title to Obsessions. That's because all of the characters have an obsession. Code Blue means a respiratory distress and I thought that was the right title for the book but I allowed the first publisher to let her title stand. When my rights were returned and I sought a new publisher I wanted the original title returned.
Why I wrote this book is interesting. Most of the medical suspense stories I read had an evil doctor orperhaps an evil nurse. I encountered while working as a nurse, a patient's relative who was determined to prove the patient in question had been killed during a Code. The question wasn't solved to the person's liking and thus the character was born. Then I began developing the other characters. The heroine became a widow who had been in an emotionally abusive marriage. She now though relatively young holds a man who could be her love interest at bay. She becoems the obsession of the man who likes and hates her.
The first time I began the story, I had the heroine be a young, new nurse. After about three chapters, the book stalled and I put it away for a time. Then slowlsy, the many characters took shape and the new versionhad an older heroine and many others who were to die during the book. I really had fun plotting out the story and developing the characters. But always my intention was to have a medical suspense without the evil doctor.
