Tuesday's Writer's tip features the Riddle Plot 0 second segment #BWLAUthor #MFRWAuthor #Writing #plot #riddle

This is where the reader learns several things. One is what really happened and one is what is thought to ahve happened. This is the time for the specifics. The clues are shown but rather than blatently put forth are shown in an ordinary manner. They don't stick out and shout, I's a clue. The writer must be careful not to telegraph the clues thus making it easy for the reader to solve well before the story ends and perhaps puts it aside.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading - Am now reading the BWL release. An interesting grup of stories. Fireman is a cozy mystery that roams a bit. Angel Ship, the second book of this series - Interesting read and lots of action. Moving is Murder is more a horror story than a cozy mystery. Will finish the other two next week.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - George Santos is at it again. I do not understand why his Rep. colleagues from New York do not vote to get rid of him. His presence is like all they aren't doing, like governing. Will this ever end?

Meander 3 - Writing. Making the final changes in the story. Unfortunately the story is a novella length not book length. Not much I can do.

Janet Lee Walters has provided her many fans with still another conflict-driven story that's filled with a realistic, edgy medical setting, a plucky proactive heroine, and a cast of secondary characters that portray all the foibles of the human condition. Joanna Gordon, Director of Nurses at a community hospital is faced with tough choices. She must stand up to the unscrupulous CEO, doing what she knows in her
heart is right, even if it costs her her job. Joanna grapples with choices in the romance department as well. While she is the epitomy of a driven career woman at the hospital, when it comes to matters of the heart, she's much more the soft kitten, just like her pet kitty at home. The book held my interest right until the end as I kept reading to know which man would win out. I wasn't disappointed!

All-in-all, this an enjoyable read that deserves a 5 star rating.

Sadira Stone is Visiting and Talking about Characters #MFRWAuthor #romance #villains #heroes #heroines

Award-winning contemporary romance author Sadira Stone spins steamy, smoochy tales set in small businesses—a quirky bookstore, a neighborhood bar, a vintage boutique... Her stories highlight found family, friendship, and the sizzling chemistry that pulls unlikely partners together. When she emerges from her writing cave in Las Vegas, Nevada (which she seldom does), she can be found in belly dance class, or strumming her ukulele, perhaps exploring the West with her charming husband, or cooking up a storm, and always gobbling all the romance books. For a guaranteed HEA (and no cliffhangers!) visit Sadira at www.sadirastone.com.

2. Heroes, Heroines, Villains. Which are your favorite to write?

Since I write romance, there’s seldom a clear-cut villain, other than the couple’s own inner turmoil and painful pasts. Whether I have more fun writing the hero or the heroine varies from book to book. For The Billionaire’s Christmas Castle, my most recent release, I related more to heroine Annie, who’d endured far to many snubs from snooty rich folks to see billionaire Michael as a potential love interest. Overall, though, I do tend to fall in love with my book boyfriends—I mean, that’s the point, right?

3. Heroes. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or plain imagination create the man you want every reader to love? Do they come before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?

First comes the inspiration. For example, seeing a castle in a small California mountain town made me itch to write one in Trappers Cove. Then comes the basic premise: rich guy comes to Trappers Cove and meets a local woman who convinces him to rent the castle. From there I create character sketches for the hero and heroine—and yes, I find photos to help me visualize the hero and heroine. I make a Pinterest board for each story. Wanna see?  https://www.pinterest.com/sadira0641/

4. Heroines. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or imagination create the woman you want the reader to root for? Do they appear before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?

See above. No matter their age or background, my heroines always have a touch of me—rebels who push back against family or societal forces that would keep their lives small and dull. These ladies yearn to live big, shiny lives, and the men they fall for support them on their journey.

Your favorite book?

Now, now, you can’t possibly expect me to pick just one! That’s like asking a mother to name her favorite child. I am very fond of historical romances by Sarah Maclean and Joanna Shupe, and contemporary romances by too many authors to count. Nothing too dark, though. Sorry, CoHo fans.

5. Villains or villainesses or an antagonist, since they don’t always have to be the bad guy or girl. They can be a person opposed to the hero’s or heroine’s obtaining their goal. How do you choose one? How do you make them human?

In my romances, the antagonist is usually the hero and heroine’s own inner wounds that must be overcome before they can accept love fully. But there’s sometimes a force they struggle against together—interfering family, dastardly exes, so-called “loved ones” who want to keep them from growing, and my personal favorite: greedy developers who threaten to suck all the charm out of a small town or neighborhood.

6. What is your latest release? Who is the hero, heroine and or the villain?

The Billionaire’s Christmas Castle is book 3 in the Trappers Cove Romance series, set in a funky little beach town in Washington State.

Michael Garwood, age 54, is a billionaire tech investor who flees the high-rise jungle of Bellevue to escape the Christmas madness. He figures Trappers Cove will give him the peace and solitude he needs to sort out a personal and professional crisis that could destroy the business he’s built from the ground up. What he didn’t count on was meeting Annie.

Annie Scott, age 56, owns Auntie Annabelle’s Antiques Attic, a vintage shop on Trappers Cove’s Main Street that’s popular with locals and tourists alike. She has zero patience for snobs, but to help a dear friend, she persuades Michael to rent the local castle, recently renovated as a “luxury” vacation rental.

When a freak cold snap freezes pipes and floods the site of Trappers Cove’s Christmas Ball, Annie persuades Michael to host a party for the whole damn town! If the sassy, sexy shopkeeper weren’t so intriguing, he’d turn her down flat. But he agrees, sparks fly, and… Well, let’s just say that steam and sparks ensue.

I had so much fun writing this spicy over-50 holiday romance that proves it’s never too late for an HEA.

7. What are you working on now?

Book 4 in the Trappers Cove series features a sprawling, very weird, alien-themed souvenir shop called Crazy Gus’s Souvenir Planet. When Gus dies under mysterious circumstances, his nephew Xander Anagnos inherits the whole mess and vows to turn it into a successful, if clichéd, shopping gallery.

Local journalist Hannah Leone vows to save the beloved landmark. If she can stir up enough outrage, she’ll save a vital tourist magnet and revive her dying local newspaper. Of course, these two butt heads, fall hard for each other…and discover that Uncle Gus’s alien obsession wasn’t just a marketing gimmick.

Love, Legacy, and Little Green Aliens comes out February 22, 2024.

8. How can people find you? I’m on all the socials—except for the dead bird app. I love to hear from readers! https://linktr.ee/SadiraStone

9. Who are your favorite authors? Besides the two I mentioned above, I’ve recently raved over contemporary romance by Michelle McCraw, Ali Hazelwood, TJ Alexander, Angelina M. Lopez, Tracey Livesay, Laurie Ryan (another Washington State beach town series!), and Tessa Bailey.

A Marriage Takes Two is featured with Thursday's Opening Scene #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Romance #medical #second chance

Two hours of pep talks, a dozen whispered mantras, and five sets of calming breaths, failed to settle Carrie Graham’s acute case of nerves. Get a grip, she told herself. She was going to see Tony, childhood defender, teenage ego booster, and the one person who’d always listened. Besides, she’d already eliminated every other candidate for the position.

Who are you kidding?

Myself?

From the moment she’d been presented with her current dilemma, he was the only possibility. All she had to do was convince him… But could she?  Sure Tony listened, but he didn’t talk about his problems, or his feelings.

The fading light of dusk made her slow the car in order to read the street signs. She’d planned to leave the apartment at noon, but the short nap after her night shift stretched until late afternoon.

She made the final turn into Fourth Street in a small West Virginia town established in the days when coal mining dominated the area. She shook her head. Rundown houses and boarded storefronts were the norm along the town’s main street. Why was Tony practicing medicine in this end-of-the-road place?

She hadn’t seen him for years, not since several months after his marriage, an event that had shaken her life. His wife hadn’t understood the friendship, or Tony and Carrie’s mutual interest in medical mysteries. With a flash of anger, Carrie recalled the night that woman stormed into the hospital cafeteria and spewed jealous accusations.

Carrie’s hands tightened on the steering wheel. She’d been embarrassed, hurt, and angry enough that she’d walked away from her best friend.

She’d heard rumors Tony’s wife had taken off for greener pastures. At least that’s what the hometown gossips said. Not that Carrie believed in gossip, especially after the news of her inheritance brought the tongue-waggers out in force.

She slowed the car to a crawl. Waves of panic lashed against her momentary calm. The place in her head where she’d filed his address was empty. She braked. The paper with the directions fluttered from the dashboard. She bent and grabbed them.

One glance was enough to retrieve the forgotten data. She eased off the brake and cruised the street. Half the houses were missing numbers. What now? Then at the foot of the dead end street, she saw the ones she’d memorized displayed in shiny brass on a massive gray house that looked like the setting for a Gothic novel.

A broad lawn fronted the house. The tailored grass stood in contrast to the tangles on either side.

“This is the place.” She gulped a breath.

After parking at the curb, she slowly released a held breath. She strode up the walk and onto the wide porch. Muffled shouts and noises came from inside. She rang the bell. What sounded like a slammed door nearly sent her back to the car. Who was staging a major temper tantrum?  She thought Tony lived alone.

She rang the bell again, this time holding it for several peals. The door opened and she forgot why she’d come. She forgot to breathe. Her eyes widened and her heart pounded in a staccato rhythm until she thought her ribs would crack.

He was more than she remembered.

Are you sure you want to be here?

“Tony.” His name escaped on a sigh. She felt like a teenager come face to face with the latest movie hero. This was the man she planned to ask…She changed her mind. Time to retreat. The plan wouldn’t work, not with the things he made her feel, and what he made her want.

“Carrie...Oh lord, it’s been ages. What are you doing here?  You look terrific.”

She did?  He must be blind. Even her coworkers had made comments about the deep smudges beneath her eyes. Most days, she felt as though she was suffering from terminal exhaustion.

“Come in.” He took her hand.

Exhaustion vanished. He’d always made her feet great, but this instant tonic-effect startled her. Coming to see him had grown corners she couldn’t see around.

“I can’t believe you’re here.” He drew her inside. “What brings you to town?”

She wanted to tell him, but the words caught in her throat. “Would you believe I was in the neighborhood?

Tony laughed. “No.”

She inhaled and the spicy scent of him invaded her space. “I came...” She couldn’t finish the sentence. He’d been her hero, her prince, her fantasy lover. In the flesh, he relegated those images to black and white.

“I bet you came to apply for the nursing position at the clinic.” He steered her down a hall that needed paint into a large living room. “Did you get lost on the way there?  Unfortunately, I’m not the one you need to see.”

She shook her head. “Another job is the last thing I need. I already have two.”

“Why?”

She shrugged. “Necessity.”

“I don’t understand.”

“It’s a long story.” She sighed. “I shouldn’t have come.”

“What’s wrong? Sounds like you need a shoulder.”

The entire body, she thought. “You could say...It’s like this...I have a problem that needs a solution...It’s sort of...” Her throat closed. Maybe she should leave. Go home. Forget the plan. Find a new one. Except, he was her first, last, and only choice.

“Be glad to listen.” He patted her hand. “Are you saying in all these years, you haven’t found anyone else to listen?

I haven’t looked, she thought. There couldn’t be a replacement for Tony. She couldn’t tell him that. “I thought...Maybe you can help.”

“Be glad to try. Go ahead.”

A crash resounded. Carrie jumped. “I think you’re the one with the problem.”

“You could say that.” Tony rolled his eyes upward. “My son’s protesting his punishment for his latest series of pranks. He’s grounded with no TV and no phone.”

“What did he do?” She sat on one end of a shabby brown couch.

“Do you really want to know?”

She nodded. Hearing about Tony’s problems could give her time to gather her courage.

He slumped beside her. “He glued the sitter’s clothes together. She left in a huff.”

“Don’t blame her.” Carrie frowned. “I thought your son lived with his mother.”

“He did until July. She’s remarried…to one of the Brinkers. She and her new husband are on a world cruise honeymoon. They didn’t take Chad.”

His blue eyes were bleak. Was his pain for his son or himself? How badly had his failed marriage hurt him?  “Are you all right with the idea?”

He shrugged. “I’ve mixed feelings.”

His expression showed hurt and anger, not ones she’d consider mixed. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. It’s great having Chad here, but he’s angry about the divorce, about living here, about his mother’s new husband. Wasn’t a great summer. Even with him in school, there are problems.”

“Maybe I can help.”

“Don’t know how.” He winked. “I’m not without experience in dealing with angry kids. “Remember…”

“Yes, and don’t even mention the first time we met.”

“Or my black eye? Lord, it’s great to see you again. Why don’t you tell me why you came all this way?”

She ran her tongue over dry lips. She searched for an answer and couldn’t find one he would believe. If she asked him, he would think she was crazy.

Good grief, my thoughts are scrambled. He is too…too… male.

And your feelings for him haven’t changed.

“Carrie.”

The demand in his voice made her feel like a child facing an adult. “It’s...” What sounded like glass shattering brought her to her feet.

Chad!”

Saved, she thought. “Don’t you think you’d better see what he’s doing before he trashes the house?”

Murder and Sweet Tea #MFRWHooks #BWLAuthor #cozy mystery #Maine Coon cat #Robespierre

Join the authors at MFRWHooks Here  http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com  for some great excerpts. Mine is fount at eclecticwriter.blogspot.com from Murder and Sweet Tea

BLURB:

Lars is her new husband. He loves Katherine but doesn’t understand why she’s always trying to protect her near and dear. Even though she saved his life while visiting him in Santa Fe, he often questions her involvement in other people’ lives.

Into their lives arrives a new neighbor, Sabrina Gates. Sabrina bought the house next door. She has had a phenomenal success as a new author but moes from her past and present threaten her peace and ability to write. There is the blogger who posts snide and not so nice posts about other authors. Sabrina’s former agent wants a share of the huge amount of money Sabrina has received for a trilogy. And there is her ex-husband, a needy greedy coward who wants money.

Above all there is Robespierre who makes his presence known.

EXCERPT:

I waved to Maria and Sarah and started along the sidewalk. The July sun shone in a cloudless sky. For a moment, I halted and studied the “Painted Lady” across the street. Several vans filled the driveway and men carrying sheetrock and wood strode to the house.

The Victorian had been mine for many years and until I’d converted both floors to apartments, the house had been a single family residence. The new owners, Jenna and Richard, had begun a second conversion to return the house to its original purpose. A smile curved my lips. This pair had married in June and had begun making the house into a home.

I turned the corner onto my street. Sun glinted on the dark waters of the Hudson River and revealed the construction of the new Tappan Zee Bridge.

My thoughts drifted to my husband. Our first anniversary would occur next month and I had visited with two of my friends to plan a barbeque. My kind of party. Lars would have made reservations at the Cedar Inn where our second reception had been held. I had missed the affair and so had Lars. An out of state friend had needed my help and I speeded to her side. Lars and I had our differences but love and friendship allowed us to compromise. Our marriage is based on a long friendship, first as two couples and then as two who had lost their mates.

Robespierre ambled up the street toward me. When he reached my side, the Maine Coon cat butted my leg with his head. Was this a welcome home or a bid for more food? At twenty pounds, he was large. His black, brown and white long hair made him seem larger.

As we passed the vacant “Dutch Colonial” next door to my new abode, I noticed a For Sale sign on the front lawn. The news brought curiosity. Who would buy? The elderly couple who owned the house had moved to a senior complex last year.

Moments later I reached home, a sprawling ranch house situated at the river’s edge well above the shore. The cat dashed to the kitchen. Lars sat at the table cradling a steaming mug of coffee. I sprinkled a few bits of dry food into Robespierre’s dish and filled a glass with spearmint iced tea. I joined my husband.

Lars glanced away from the newspaper. “Don’t leaving Megan with us for the day. He’s heading to the city.”

“He’ll swelter.”

“Possibly but he has an appointment with some publisher for a freelance bit designing book covers.”

“Sounds interesting. We’ll have fun entertaining the child. You know, she’s my fourth grandchild.”

He groaned. “You only have one. Megan is your step-grandchild the same as ----- is mine.”

“By blood, you’re right. Robby adopted me and so did Jenna after her grandmother was murdered.” I met his gaze. “The house next door is for sale. The sign went up this morning.”

Lars shook his head. “Are you worried about the Dunns?”

I glared. “Why would I worry? I know where they are. I’m hoping we acquire good neighbors.”

“And no bodies for you to find.”

I tapped his hand. “Bodies find me. I don’t seek them.”

“Is that a promise?”

The twinkle in his blue eyes dissolved my anger. “I’ll leave the next one for you.”

“Thanks a lot. You’re the one who collects corpses like a berry picker fills their basket.”

Meandering on Monday iwth Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading _ Not so much last week since I'm pushing to finish aMurder and Iced Tea - Re-read Sandstory- a very long and intense story. Enjoyed visiting old friends.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - About the Speakerof the House. Politics in Washington are mixed up. The Repblicans in the house have no clue to what they're doing. Now they're looking at Jim Jordan to become the Speaker. That would be a disaster and once again nothing would get done and there would be a shut-down around Thanksgiving to christmas. Sure hope the elections next eyar get rid of a lot of those who have no desire to see out country prosper.

Meander 3 - Writing - Am almost finished withthe last of the writing drafts for this story. Hoping to reach 20,000 words but still not sure I'll make that. 30,000 would be wonderful but that means finiding words that really don't belong in this story.

A Marriage Takes Two is featured as Sunday's Book #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #romance #medical #second chance

” This is medieval.” That’s Carrie’s response to the reading of her grandfather’s will. The money will allow her to provide for her ill mother and give her the chance to give up one of her full time jobs as a nurse. The money won’t be hers until she marries. This creates a dilemma. She has no time for dating and doesn’t know who would marry her until she thinks of her former best friend, Tony. But can she ask him? Two months later time is running out and she decides to take the plunge.

Three years ago, Tony and his wife divorced. Last year he obtained custody or their child. When Carrie asks him to marry her he decides since this won’t be a real marriage, he can accept. Years ago, he loved Carrie but never said anything to her. Now burned, he doesn’t believe in love. To help her uncomplicate her life he agrees.

Can Tony and Carrie get past the reason for the marriage and find love and make a home for his son?

Fun, easy to read with just enough conflict to keep it interesting. Will read more of Ms. Walters books.

What does the future hold for Carrie? She is not sure whether Tony, her ‘childhood protector’, ‘teenage ego booster’, the one person who always listened to her, will help her.
Years ago, Tony’s wife, Marilyn spread false accusations about Carrie, a nurse, in the hospital cafeteria. Embarrassed and angry Carrie walked away from Tony, her best friend. Since then, Marilyn has left Tony and their son Chad, who reacted by behaving badly.
Tony has never forgotten, Carrie, his first love. When she asks him to marry her to fulfil the terms of her grandfather’s will, although he has reservations he agrees to help her. However, with a rebellious child to deal with and an uncertain relationship they have much to resolve.
Ms Lane-Walters has written a romantic novel about a marriage of convenience with many twists and turns that held my interest from beginning to end.
