Thursday's Opening Scene from Haunted Dreams #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #romance #astrology #Cancer #Libra

Zach Majors sat behind the oak desk in his law office. He stared at the phone in his hand. His mother’s words echoed in his thoughts. “I signed the contract to sell the house. That means the move is on schedule for tomorrow. Can’t wait to be settled for the holidays.”

He stretched and rose. Time to let his partner know the move would happen as planned and about his barely mentioned family. He’d told Nate about his guardianship of three boys without mentioning two were his sons, sort of.

With a groan he lifted three letters to be mailed and the discs for two briefs for Mrs. Madden to type and file. He flipped off the lights. At the office manager’s desk behind a plastic shield in the waiting room, he left the letters and discs in the out box on the corner of her desk.

As he was about to pass the sofa and chairs in the small room to reach the door his partner emerged from his office. “Finished for the day/’ Zach asked.

“Definitely. And you?”

Zach nodded. “Heard from my mother. I’ll see you Monday.”

Nate halted. “Is the move on?”

“It is. The movers are coming tomorrow morning and my family will arrive soon after that.” He drew a deep breath. The time for a confession had arrived. “I told you I was guardian of three boys but I failed to mention only one is a nephew. Two are legally my sons.”

Nate’s brow wrinkled. “Legally? Are there problems with the custody? Some court battle ahead?”

Zach shook his head. He wasn’t ready to elaborate. “No real problems but I’ve only had custody of my sons for four months. My coming to Fern Lake made the process harder. Steve, he’s the oldest, resents leaving the city. I’m sure there will be problems but I’ll handle them.”

Nate nodded. “I understand. With you here except for weekends made forming bonds harder.” He stepped toward the door. “Are you sure you’ll be settled by Monday?

Zach laughed. “My mom should have been a drill sergeant. She’ll have the boys including me in line. By Monday I’ll be here and glad to escape. With your wedding on the heels of Christmas I’ll need to know about everything I’ll have to handle while you’re away.”

“You don’t need me. Just ask Joan Madden. She’s the real boss.” He halted. “Do you have your Christmas tree yet?”

“Sort of.”

Nate chuckled. “How can you sort of have a tree? Don’t tell me the movers have one on the truck.”

”They probably do. My mom has this artificial one she’s put up for years. By now it resembles a Charlie Brown tree.”

“Will she be upset if you find a new one?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Then come to Jake’s Tree Farm with me and buy a live one.”

For a moment Zach hesitated. What would his mother think? Her artificial tree had been displayed for about fifteen years. He smiled. A new tree and a new tradition seemed right. His sons knew so little about the holiday season. Their eyes had widened when they’d seen the Thanksgiving feast. How would they react on Christmas morning?

Unwanted guilt rose. He’d sent gifts when he’d known their address. Then Bonnie had moved and a bank account number was all the info he had. He’d always wondered what she had bought them with the extra money he’d sent for holidays and Birthdays. He had no way of learning unless the boys talked. Sammy might but his youngest seldom said much about his mother.

He slipped on his coat. “I’ll join you but I need to go home and change.”

Nate grinned. “I’m not going in my work clothes as Davey calls suits. Meet me at the house. Janine will be joining us.”

“How is Davey handling all this?” Zach hoped the boy wouldn’t sulk about not being included. After the course of treatment for childhood leukemia, the boy had been isolated for weeks at home.

“He’s coming with us. Dr. Chou lifted the stay at home order this morning.”

“That’s great.” Zach paused. “My nephew and one of my sons are close to Davey’s age. When we’re settled and you’re back from your honeymoon, we’ll get together.”

“They’ll meet at the wedding reception,” Nate said.

“That’s right.” Zach hoped the boys would behave. They’d seldom been among strangers and had never been anything like a wedding. He followed Nate to the door. They rode the elevator to the ground floor and went to their cars.

“See you in thirty,” Nate called.

Wednesday Shattered Dreams #MFRWHooks #BWLAuthor #romance #medical

Join the authors at MFRWAuthors here  http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com for some great excerpts. Mine is from Shattered Dreams and is on sale

Blurb:

Torn apart years ago by lies and threats, Rafe Marshall returns to town and confronts Manon Lockley. She has been told he died on the night he stood her up for their senior prom.

When she faints, Rafe catches her and realizes he hasn’t stopped loving her. Manon carries anger and now grief that wasn’t real. Rafe wants her in his life, but she doesn’t want to talk about what happened in the past. She can’t be sure if her father or someone else told lies about Rafe and she doesn’t want to know. Can Rafe persuade her to listen? Not without a battle.

Excerpt:

Without a glance at the waiting patient, she strode to the counter. The aroma strengthened. Hadn’t been her imagination. She turned her head and stared at the man wearing the green cotton examining gown. She gripped the edge of the counter. Blood rushed from her head.

“You’re dead.” The words slashed the silence. This couldn’t be happening.

“Hardly.”

The voice sounded like the one from her dreams. She opened her mouth to ask where he’d been and what he’d been doing for the past twelve years. She sucked in a shallow breath. Asking that question would only stir the emotions she had frozen.

“Don’t bail on me. Sit down.”

Her fingers had no feeling. Waves of darkness dimmed her vision. The edge of the counter disappeared. Her knees buckled. Blackness engulfed her.

* * *

“Manon!” Rafe Marshall leaped from the examining table in time to catch her before she hit the floor. He cradled her against his chest. “Didn’t mean to scare you,” he whispered. Why did she think he was dead? He knew news of his accident had been kept quiet because the police believed he’d been deliberately forced off the road. Who had told her? Had the informant been the driver of the dark car his rescuer had seen speeding from the scene?

The citrus aroma of her shampoo brought memories of years ago when he had buried his face in her sunlit hair before they made love. His body responded to her presence and the sensual recollections. Thank heavens the gown was cloth. The urgent rise of his cock would have punctured paper.

Carefully, he placed her on the table. He stroked her face with his fingers and brushed his lips over hers. Any anger remaining from the past vanished beneath the heat of desire.

Manon was beautiful and his. The knowledge rang true. Even if she wouldn’t admit the strength of the bond, he knew. How could he explain why he’d taken so long to find her? Would she believe that any trace of her had vanished in Europe three years after she’d begun touring with her father?

He stepped back from the table. He had many things to tell her. Some of the revelations would cause anger, denial and pain. At this moment, he didn’t know where to begin. She wasn’t the teenage girl who had loved him. Had her love morphed into hate? He could handle that but not indifference.

Why hadn’t she answered the letters he’d written after the amnesia had cleared enough for him to remember her? Those notes had been sent months after her eighteenth birthday. Had she received the messages? That was one question he intended to ask. He needed to clear the past so he could move forward.

He had to tell her about the accident, the multiple injuries, the surgeries and the months of rehab. He wanted her to know though he’d left on their prom night, he’d decided to come for her after her eighteenth birthday.

Tuesday's Writer's Tip -Plot and the scenes following the Opening Scene #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Writing #Scenes

When writing a novel rather than a short story, the author has some leeway when developing the scenes following the opening scene. If they're going to have more than one viewpoint, the first scene or scenes after the opening scene can be done in other viewpoints. The first few scenes following the opening salvo must do several things. Develop the plot line, give the reader needed information and to develop the characters. They must provide enough to pull the reader onto the next and then the next chapter.

Remember the story is an adventure that leads the characters on a journey toward their goal. All the scenes need to have this lead to the next and the next. There are certain stages in the development of the story. Each scene may have a problem that relates to the final scene. Problems that must be solved before the characters can move on. You are building toward the final crisis by slow stages and each stage must be fully developed.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading - Am reading Katherine Kirtz's series and am enjoying reading them again. It's been so long since I've read the series that they're almost like reading new books. I hope someday in the future someone will be reading some of my old books for a second time.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - Not much thinking this week. Tiredof politics and tired of people who lost thinking they've won or that they will somehow overturn the election. Makes me wonder about their sanity. There are others who had this kind of bug in their heads and were found to be diseased. Could it be?

Meander 3 - Writing - Am into the second re-write of Incal and there's so much i skated over when doing the rough draft. Now it's time to fill in the setting and the descriptions without going on for pages and ppages of exposition. This draft is always fun and finding scenes that need to be written or expanded from a line of two is satisfying,

Friday Kris Bock is visiting and talking about Who She Was Before #MFRWAuthor #Romantic suspense #Sweet romance #Mysteries

What Were You Before

Day 1
1. What were you before you became an author? Did this influence your choices as a writer?

I first studied photography, but I quickly learned I didn’t want to be a professional photographer and switched to writing. I wrote my first novel, The Well of Sacrifice, shortly after finishing grad school, while I was looking for work as a magazine editor. I loved books such as Julie of the Wolves and Island of the Blue Dolphins growing up and wanted to do a similar young adventure story. The novel is set in Mayan times, inspired by a summer I spent traveling through Mexico and Central America.

Astonishingly, I sold the book! This gave me the mistaken impression that having a writing career wasn't so hard. I had some bumps along the way, but I've managed to make a career of writing by doing a lot of work in educational publishing.

Around 2008, I was feeling restless and wanted a change. I had mostly been reading adult romantic suspense novels, so I started writing those under the name Kris Bock. Later I switched to contemporary sweet romance, and I have a mystery series launching next year.

2. Are you genre specific or general? I don’t mean major genres but subdivisions or romance, mystery or paranormal.

I write fiction and nonfiction for children and adults – literally a little bit of everything. Sweet contemporary romance, romantic suspense, mystery, fantasy, historical fiction, ghost stories, biography, nonfiction about science and history… I’ve even been paid for poems and very short play scripts. I have over 80 published books across genres and age ranges, plus I’ve written for magazines. The variety keeps me interested!

3. What is your latest release?

Cupcakes and Confessions at The Cat Café is book 6 in the Furrever Friends Sweet Romance series. It’s a sweet contemporary romance with mature characters.

A chance meeting changes three lives …

Two years ago, computer genius Sean Gorsuch had a health crisis and sold the tech company he built. Now he works at a cat café, dishing out hot drinks and sweet treats to customers, and lavishing attention on cats. At fifty-two and never married, he might be a little lonely, but how can he find someone who gets his quirky way of seeing the world?

Twenty-three years ago, Fiona Jones gave up her baby for adoption when her teen fiancé abandoned her. Since then, she has spent most of her life alone. A chance meeting with Sean on a plane leads to a startling revelation: his coworker, Holly, looks like a younger version of Fiona. Could Fiona have a second chance with her daughter, now grown up?

Sean helps steady Fiona through the emotional roller coaster of getting to know Holly. Fiona’s life is too complicated for romance, and Sean doesn’t want to get between mother and daughter. Still, something sparks between them. Should they stay just friends or risk their hearts?

The Furrever Friends Cat Café helps people find furry forever friends – and just might lead to romantic true love too. If you enjoy friends to lovers and mature romance, check out Cupcakes and Confessions at the Cat Café. You’ll also find rescue cats with plenty of personality and their own ideas about what love is.

4. What are you working on now?

I’m writing a series with my brother, scriptwriter Douglas J Eboch, who wrote the original screenplay for the movie Sweet Home Alabama (yes, the movie starring Reese Witherspoon). Our new young adult comedy series features “Felony Melanie,” Jake, and their friends a decade before the events of the movie. It’s a lot of fun to work with a writing partner, especially one I’ve known my whole life.

Book 1 involved a beauty pageant with a mystery and book 2 had Melanie desperate to participate in the local demolition derby. We are now writing book 3, which involves a high school prank war. Readers called the first two books “Laugh out loud funny,” so I guess the fun we have writing it is coming through.

Find the first two books at Amazon US or other e-book retailers. You can check out the series for free if you sign up for our Rom-Com newsletter and get Felony Melanie Destroys the Moonshiner’s Cabin. These first two chapters from the novel Felony Melanie in Pageant Pandemonium stand alone as a short story. In the future, you’ll get fun content about upcoming Felony Melanie novels and other romantic comedy news and links.

5. Do your reading choices influence your choice of a writing career?

Actually, I’ve been reading a lot of historical romance lately, sometimes with mystery or paranormal twists. I don’t have any interest in writing it, and I think that lets me enjoy it as a reader instead of analyzing it as a writer. Meanwhile, I still get immersed in the emotions and plot rhythms, which helps me keep in tune with what makes a good story.

6. Where can we find you?

I’m everywhere! Well, actually, I’m in a small town in New Mexico, but you can find me everywhere online.

Thursday's Opening Scene from Tangled Dreams #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Romance #Attorney #Child psychology

Janine Rhodes lifted her giggling charge into her arms and strode toward the cabin. She chuckled. Only a rich man would consider the sprawling structure a cabin. The rustic log cabin portion contained a large main room, kitchen, eating area and a powder room. A massive stone wing held eight bedrooms and five complete bathrooms.

Tammy wiggled free and ran toward the path leading to the swimming pool and cabana. Laughter trailed after her. “Catch me.”

Janine snatched her up. “Snack time. Then nap.”

“No.” The toddler yawned and rubbed her eyes.

Janine tapped Tammy’s nose. “You’re months away from being a terrible two.” Her feet crunched colorful fallen leaves blown from the woods. Only a few white clouds floated in the sky. A warm day for early October.

At the door, Janine turned to admire nature’s bright colors. Red, yellow and orange leaves adorned the trees. The dark green of pines formed a background.

Janine sighed. This job was the best she’d ever had. As well as leaving her weekends free for school, Andi and Rob had become friends.

She stepped into the large room and removed hers and Tammy’s jackets. After a hand wash, she popped the toddler into the high chair and poured a cup of juice and found cookies. While Tammy ate, Janine filled a mug with coffee. She sipped the rich aromatic brew and sighed with pleasure. The coffee here tasted like a treat.

Her glance flowed around the kitchen. She didn’t know what halt the appliances did but this was a chef’s dream. A long island separated the dining area from the kitchen. A large fireplace dominated one wall. Two dark brown leather couches fronted the hearth. A pair of recliners faced a large screen television.

By the time Tammy finished her snack, her eyelids drooped. Janine lifted the toddler and went to the powder room to wipe the child’s face and hands. A loud pounding at the door startled her. Tammy screamed.

“It’s all right.” Janine rubbed the little girl’s back.

Had to be a friend. Only friends knew the combination to the gate at the foot of the long driveway. Anyone else had to call the house to be let in. Before she had a chance to check the monitor, the loud rapping sounded again. She opened the door.

A tall man she recognized brushed past her. “Mr. Quinn, is something wrong?”

“Where’s Rob?”

“In his office. I’ll let him know you’re here.” Her employer’s attorney’s green eyes flashed. Anger or fear? His hair looked as if someone had run fingers through the thick dark hair.

“Don’t bother.” He strode toward the bedroom wing.

Janine watched him rush away. Was there trouble at the movie studio?

Tammy rubbed her face on Janine’s shoulder. She patted the child’s back. “To bed.” She entered the hall.

She heard Nate shouting. Janine sighed. Though from the first time she’d seen Nate Quinn, she’d felt an attraction but she knew there was no chance for any relationship. He still grieved for his wife who had died a year ago. An impossible dream. There were too many tangled threads to unravel.

Tammy popped her thumb into her mouth. “Bear.” Janine entered the bedroom wing.

Rob’s office door stood open. Nate Quinn’s near shouts flowed into the hall. “What am I going to do? I can’t lose him to that damned disease.”

Though she shouldn’t remain and eavesdrop, Janine froze in place. Curiosity gripped like an iron glove. Did he mean his eight year old son was ill?

Her arms tightened around Tammy. She should leave but she had to know what made him sound angry and defeated.

“He’s been tired lately so two days ago, I took him to see Andi. She ran some tests and called me around noon, wanted Davey admitted to the hospital. She asked Dr. Chou to see him.”

“Did you?” Rob asked.

“Yah. I just left him there and fled in a panic. I can’t endure anything going wrong.”

Janine edged along the all and stared at the open door. Nate Quinn looked ready to collapse or cry.

“Dr. Chou is excellent,” Rob said.

“That’s what Andi said.”

“What’s the diagnosis?”

“Leukemia.”

Those words brought a rush of tears to Janine’s eyes. Tammy wiggled. Before the little girl cried, Janine loosened her hold and stepped into the child’s bedroom. Janine’s knees buckled. She drew deep breaths to calm her raging thoughts. She bit her lip and focused on her charge.

Divided Dreams #MFRWHooks #BWLAuthor #Romance #Medical #Doctor/writer #nurse practitioner #Cancer #Gemini

Join the authors at #MFRWHooks here  http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com  for some great excerpts. Mine is from divided dreamd featuring a doctor turned author and a nurse practitioner

BLURB:
Rob Grantlan has given up medicine to become an author. As a Gemini, having two careers seems just right. His quiet days are overturned by the death of his wayward sister and his taking guardianship of his two month old niece. When he learns the father of the infant is his old flame Andi Sherman’s brother a plan unfolds. Years ago, he hurt her. He still loves her and he wants to regenerate that love.

Andi Sherman is now a nurse practitioner in Pediatrics. She has vowed never to return to Fern Lake. The offer of a partnership in a friend’s practice is tempting. She refuses until she learns Rob has given up the practice of medicine. She believes he will leave town. On the day after her July birthday, she returns and comes upon the accident, finds the dying woman and the baby. When she learns the little girl is her niece and Rob hasn’t left town she is conflicted. She still loves him but she can’t trust him. News from her brother brings a threat.

Will Tammy’s presence in their lives find a way to allow them to love and trust again?

Excerpt:

“I’ll be in the waiting room. I’ll take care of the paperwork.” As they wheeled his sister away, Rob opened the door into the waiting room. What had Patricia meant by “Take care?” He stopped at the admission’s desk. “I’m here about the woman who just arrived by ambulance.”

The clerk looked up. “Dr. Grantley, do you know her name. The EMTs had no idea. They found no identification but they left two suitcases I was about to open.”

“Her name is Patricia Grantley.” At her startled stare he continued. “I have no idea if she has insurance but I’ll handle the bills.”

She raised a clipboard holding several forms. “Fill these out as best as you can.”

Rob retreated to a seat at the rear of the room and added as much information as he knew. After returning them to the clerk she gave him the suitcases. He resumed his seat on one of the plastic chairs facing a television turned to a cooking channel.

A young woman with light brown hair entered. A diaper bag hung from her shoulder. Relief rolled like a stream released from a blockage. She must be the baby’s mother. Patricia hadn’t caused a fatality. The young woman stopped at the desk.

Who was she? Though curious knowing wouldn't halt the thoughts racing through his head. Something about her hair and her body drew him, made him think about sex. Her shorts revealed long tanned legs. Would her face match the rear view?

He groaned. She reminded him of Andi Sherman. Why think about her now? He’d ruined any chances of a future with her. Thirteen years ago he’d followed his father’s demands to tell her to get lost. These words spoken in the steel coated voice flowed again.

You want college. Ditch Andi Sherman. She’s poor white trash, not to mention the reputation of her family. Drop her and you’re no son of mine. Forget college. Forget any inheritance.’

He still regretted that August evening at the lake. Rob swallowed memories of his failure to rebel against his bullying father.

The young woman turned from the desk. She studied the rows of waiting people. Her face blanched.

His felt on fire. Andi Sherman was back in town. Why? She had no family in Fern Lane. His hands clenched. Her beauty stunned him. He wanted to go to her but that would be the wrong decision. She walked toward him. Her braced shoulders and stiff spine showed this wasn’t her choice.

“I’m sorry.” His voice sounded hollow.

“No reason. What happened in the past stays there.” Her mouth formed a thin line.

“That’s not what I meant.”

“The woman at the desk told me your sister was the driver of the accident I came upon.”

“She was.” He drew a deep breath. “Is your baby all right?”

Her laughter held a bitter note. “The child isn’t mine.” She dropped the diaper bag on his lap. “The baby was in the car your sister wrecked. I took the baby to may car and grabbed this. Forgot to give to the EMTs. Looks like the little girl is your responsibility.”

Rob swallowed. She was right but what did he know about infants? “What are you doing in Fern Lake?”

“I’m joining a friend’s pediatric practice.”

“You’re a doctor. Congratulations.”

She shook her head. “Just a nurse practitioner.”

Tuesday's Writer's Tip - Scenes following the opening #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Weiting #Scenes

After you've finished scene one the need to write more scenes happens. The one thing to think about when writing scene two is the pattern of your book. will there be only one character or are there are more than one. If there are more, the way to do this is to give the next scene to the other chracter of characters viewpoints. Thus you've established the pattern you'll follow and the reader won't be thrown if after five or six scenes you throw in one from a second character's viewpoint.

There are other things to consider when writing scene two. Give your character more depth. Show a bit of their backstory which will help you show what has caused the character to act in a specific way today. You can also  show what the character is battling. Perhaps it's her environment. She may be outof step with the norm of the others around her. You can decide how much of the setting you will include. You need to put in some since characters don't exist in vacuums, You caneither use minimum amount of  exposition or you can really estastablish the setting in vivid terms. You can also lay the groundwork for what is to come to the character in the future,

So plan your second scene with care.
