Friday Vijaya Schartz is Visiting and talking about being a Panster or Plotter #BWLAuthor #science fiction #cats #writing schedule

  1. Are you a panster or a plotter or perhaps a bit of both?

Long ago, when I started writing, I trusted my inspiration and wrote whatever the story wanted me to write. It seems ideal, but when you write for publication, on a strict deadline, you cannot afford to get stuck and have to rewrite the whole thing fifteen times. It would take a decade to write a book. Nowadays, I take the time to figure out where the story and the characters are going before I write chapter one. Then, after writing the first five or six chapters, I brainstorm again… usually because by that time I know a lot more about my characters, and can devise a better story.

  1. Which comes first - characters or plot for you?

A plot is nothing without good characters. Even if sometimes I have a plot idea from the start, I cannot start writing before I find the perfect characters to play their part in it. And often, the characters guide me to figure out the plot. Sometimes, they surprise me and don’t want to do what I expect of them. The ideas coming from them are often better than mine.

  1. What are you working on now? Is this a book in a current series or something totally new?

My latest book, ANGEL SHIP, Book One of the Blue Phantom series, was just release two weeks ago. Now, I am in the process of plotting Book Two, scheduled for October 2023, and defining the characters of this second instalment in the series. All my novels are standalones, even if sometimes a secondary character from a previous book becomes the main protagonist of the next one. So, I have to define new main characters for each book. It keeps a series fresh and keeps me excited about the writing.

  1. Do you have some kind of object or place that figures in most of your books? I use gems a lot, hospitals and caves.

In most of my science fiction stories, there is a fantasy side. Of course, there is space, spaceships, and alien planets. But there is also some kind of crystal. Crystal (Quartz) is capable of storing energy and knowledge, and could be the future of technology. To a less advanced society, that crystal, manifesting powers beyond understanding, could be considered magical. I also have a strong connection with cats, and don’t be surprise to find big cats with telepathic abilities, natural or technological, in many of my science fiction fantasy books.

  1. Do you write every day or just when the spirit hits?

I write every day. A professional author on deadline with a publisher must be organized, and schedule a regular time to write. Defining your best writing time is important. I noticed that I am more productive and better inspired to write in the morning. So, I adapted my schedule to get up earlier and write every morning for a few hours. I schedule my other activities later in the day.

  1. Where can we find you?

On my website: http://www.vijayaschartz.com

On Amazon: Amazon.com: Vijaya Schartz: Books, Biography, Blog, Audiobooks, Kindle

On Smashwords: https://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/schartz

On Facebook: (1) Vijaya Schartz Author | Facebook

  1. Who are your favorite authors? What about a book you’ve enjoyed?

The author who inspired me to write sci-fi romance is Linnea Sinclair, with her strong women characters. Early in my writing career I met and loved Diana Gabaldon, who since has become a very big name with the Outlander series. Before that, I was in love with the 19th Century French authors and poets of the romantic movement. As a child, and even later, my favorite books was “The Little Prince by Antoine de St. Exupery,” Later, I discovered DUNE by Frank Herbert, and I was hooked on Science Fiction.

Friday Vijaya Schartz is visiting and talking about her latest release #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Paranormal #justice #romance #science fiction

Tell me about your latest release or the book you wish to feature? Genre?

My September release, ANGEL BRAVE, Book 3 in the Azura Chronicles series, is a sci-fi fantasy romance set on the glowing blue planet, Azura. This is the last book in this particular series, although I have other series set in the same universe, like the Byzantium (space station) series, featuring a few Azuran characters. As my readers have learned to expect in my sci-fi novels, one of the characters is a large feline… but I’ll let you discover it for yourself. The hero, Keoke Mahoe, is a spy for the Resistance against the GTA oppressing the galaxy. The heroine, Lady Valoria, is the leader of Azura, responsible for the well being of her people.

Where did the idea arise?

Since this is a series, the idea flowed naturally from the first two books, and also from what happened in the Byzantium series spinoff. The planet, its culture and idiosyncrasies, are already familiar, although I always make sure that each book can be read as a standalone. As for the characters, I wrote so many books that it takes me some time to make each of them unique and memorable. Keoke is a Zephyrian mind-reader with many talents that make him the perfect spy. Valoria is a strong leader, former Avenging Angel (yes, they can sprout wings and take flight anytime) and, like many of my heroines, she’s handy with a sword. As for the plot, it involves the return of a sinister cult that performs human sacrifices to please a certain evil deity.

How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

The readers familiar with the islanders of the Pacific Ocean will recognize some familiar traits in the hero, Keoke. I used my personal experience as a surfer and an islander when I lived in Hawaii. I also included a few Polynesian legends and beliefs. I had to research some of them to refresh my memory, as it’s been a while since I left Hawaii. This hero is very close to nature, and very close to my heart.

How long did you take to write the book?

I started writing this book when my last one was published (a year ago) and finished it in July. One book a year is a good pace for me. I like having a deadline to keep me on point, but I also like having enough time to polish the book to my satisfaction.

Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?

I’m a Capricorn, in other words, a workaholic. I wrote all my life, but my first novel was released in 2000. I had many publishers over the years, and more than thirty titles released. BWL Publishing is my only publisher now.

Do you write in a number of genres of stick to one?

I’ve tried my hands at many genres, but science fiction, fantasy, and romance are my favorites. From contemporary, to Celtic legends, to space operas, human conflicts remain the same. The fight for justice, survival, the right to love, are all part of the human (and alien) makeup. So are the ugly side of

Friday - Vijaya Schartz Talking About Heroes, Heroines and Villains #MFRWauthor #BooksWeLove

1. Do you write a single genre or do your fingers flow over the keys
creating tales in many forms? Does your reading choices reflect your writing
choices? Are there genres you wouldn't attempt?
I write all over the place,
because I like to read different things. Like when I read, varying the kind of
stories I write prevents me from being bored. My inspiration flows better when I
alternate. In my case, it's science fiction, medieval fantasy, or contemporary
romance. I also vary the lengths, novels and novellas, sometimes an entire
series.

2. Heroes, Heroines, Villains. Which are your favorite to write?
Does one of these come easy and why?
I love my protagonists, of course, but I
also have a reputation for writing the worst (and by worst these reviewers mean
the best) villains. I enjoy developing and refining my bad guys. I make them
believable, strongly motivated, and intelligent. I believe the stronger the
villain, the more heroic the hero or heroine will have to be to defeat him (or
her).

3. Heroes. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or plain
imagination create the man you want every reader to love? Do they come before
the plot or after you have the idea for the story?
Before I start writing, I
know my hero from the inside. I know his motivations, his strengths, his
weaknesses, and what makes him tick. What he looks like will be determined by
the genre, and what I discover along the way, whether it's his birth place, his
race (or species if it's science fiction) his occupation, etc. A young business
executive will not look the same as a seasoned medieval warrior, a Native
American shape shifter, a Chinese super Ninja, or a genetically enhanced Space
Marine. Once I know what he looks like, I do search for corresponding pictures
on the web, and I use them for inspiration. Sometimes I create picture boards
for my book. Depending on the publisher, some of these pictures might end up on
the book cover.

4. Heroines. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or
imagination create the woman you want the reader to root for? Do they appear
before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?
I try to vary the
looks of my heroines. Again I know them from the inside when I brainstorm the
story. They are always strong, often wear a uniform or carry guns, swords,
blasters. With very few exceptions, they kick butt. By the time I look at
pictures on the web, I already know what she looks like, and finding a picture
to represent her is often a challenge.

5. Villains or villainesses or an
antagonist, since they don't always have to be the bad guy or girl. They can be
a person opposed to the hero's or heroine's obtaining their goal. How do you
choose one? How do you make them human?
This is a trick question for me,
because not all my villains are human. Sometimes they are of a different species
(alien or part alien), and sometimes they are immortals, even gods. Yet, no
matter what we are, we all have deep motivations, and I make sure theirs are
clear and easy to understand for the reader. We can all relate to the thirst for
power, the lure of riches, pride, revenge... my secret is, that in his mind the
villain is the hero of his own story. In the Archangel series, I have the
reptilian devil himself being harassed and belittled by his nagging wife. It was
fun to write.

6. What is your latest release? Who is the hero, heroine and
or the villain?
BELOVED CRUSADER is Book 6 in the Curse of the Lost Isle
medieval fantasy romance series. The hero is a Christian Knight who embarks on
the first Crusade in hopes of erasing his Pagan origins. He swore never to be
like his father, who let a woman rule his life. The heroine is Palatina the Fae,
seeking redemption from a curse. She is immortal, and Pagan. An erudite, she is
curious by nature. But in this Christian world, discovery could mean burning at
the stake. I have two villains in this story. One is the Great Goddess herself,
who turns against the heroine for disobeying and questioning her faith. The
other villain is a Naga shape shifter, half serpent half man, an instrument of
the Goddess, and possibly the Prince of Darkness himself. This is the first of
my villains to be irredeemably dark.

7. What are you working on
now?
Something shorter, lighter, a contemporary romance novella titled "Asleep
in Scottsdale" featuring a young CEO with a sleeping disorder. The heroine is a
sleep therapist. The villain is... well, I don't want to spoil the read, since
it's a bit of a mystery and the twisted bad guy is only revealed quite late in
the story. Still, you can expect danger at every turn, a strong, intelligent
heroine, and sizzling romance.

Then Book 7 in the Curse of the Lost Isle
medieval fantasy series will feature yet another sister, Meliora the Fae, whose
curse is to live as a recluse on Mount Ararat, with only a magic hawk for
companion, forever forbidden to love... Since it's a romance, you can see where
this is going.

8. How can people find you?

Just a Few Words from Snatched by Vijaya Schartz

A few lines from SNATCHED

By Vijaya Schartz

There, in the bright light, walked a tall muscular man, young, his long

blond hair framing a tan face with icy gray eyes... The visage of Adonis on

Hercules' body.

Zania's gaze roamed over the regular lines of his jaw, the full, sensual

lips, dimpled chin, down the expanse of his hairless pectorals, and stopped

on the leather cod piece embossed with Tor's hammer. That's all he wore. So,

he was a Viking.

Janet Lane Walters - What I'm Reading - Vijaya Schartz

I began reading science fiction in my teen years and was fascinated by the genre. I thought I might write it someday. When I finally began writing, I tried several times to write stories. Sadly they were rejected. One almost made it but the publisher changed directions and was no longer publishing fiction. The editor of a science fiction magazine expressed interest in my writing and would have liked to see more though he didn't make an offer on the story. Then he died and I put my dreams of writing science fiction aside. They will remain on the shelf because while writing I discovered a number of things about my style and my interests. I discovered fantasy and that was a better fit. But I still read science fiction and enjoy it. Now to a writer I have recently discovered. I have been reading through her stories and while I haven't read them all, eventually I will. My reading remains eclectic and there are so many authors.

Vijaya Schartz is the latest of my discoveries. What I like about her stories is the adventure. Her heroines are strong, her heros are also strong and the adventures pull me from chapter to chapter. She also combines science fiction with romance. Her created worlds interest me. I was going through what I'd read of her stories. There are I believe five or six on my Kindle that I've enjoyed. So if you like action, adventure and romance try her books.

Snatched is one of my favorites. So are the Ancient Enemies series. And for a different take try the Archangel duo. Alien Lockdown was the first one I read and hooked me. Imagine a prison underground and the place is undergoing a meltdown leaving the hero and heroine stranded among the criminals trying to find their way to the surface.

How She Does It - Vijaya Schartz

INTERVIEW WITH SCI-FI ROMANCE AUTHOR VIJAYA SCHARTZ

Thanks, Janet, for having me on your blog. I love the cat, by the way.
Find Vijaya's books at Amazon.com:
https://www.Amazon.com/author/vijayaschartz
Q - We all know there are six elements in writing fiction and often fact. Who, What, When, Where, Why and How. I believe the first five lead to the sixth which for me is the plot. What's your take on this?

I believe there is a seventh element that follows these six primary questions. What comes next is WHAT IF? And that’s how I usually brainstorm my plot. After I have a frame, a basic idea of where the story is going, it’s fairly linear and predictable. So I start throwing obstacles and surprises in the mix to twist the plot. What if the villain is actually the good guy, and vice versa? What if the hero is not who he believes to be? What if the villain is actually her real father? What if she is buried alive? What if he is taken prisoner? What if... There is no stupid question when you brainstorm. I question everything, and often I find out so much about my characters and the possible plot points that I have to pick and choose what twists I’m going to use.

Q - How do you create your characters? Do you have a specific process?

I first ask myself what my main characters want, because that’s what will drive them throughout the story. Then I give them strong qualities that can be double-edged. If it’s a romance, I want them to be compatible in some ways and conflicting in other ways. Since no one is perfect, however, each hero or heroine should also have at least one fatal flaw that’s going to come up and foil their plans at the most critical time. It’s easy to go overboard with a good quality, and it becomes a flaw. Too much attention to detail can make you miss the larger picture, etc.

And since no one is totally evil either, I give my villains at least one redeeming quality and many flaws. Even a serial killer can love his mother, give generously to charity, or care about his cat. In the Ancient Enemy series, my villain, Captain Kavak, was dubbed the best (worst) villain of Science Fiction (according to a reviewer). That villain was bent upon destroying the human race, yet in her mind, she fought for a noble cause... the survival of her own kind.

Q - Do your characters come before the plot? Do you sketch out your plot or do you let the characters develop the route to the end?

To me the two are linked. I give the characters a personality, then I decide of their circumstances, I know what kind of ending I want, and I reserve the right to throw obstacles in their way. But the characters’ reactions to circumstances and obstacles, their decisions and actions will determine the next step and consequently the course of the story. And sometimes, they surprise me with twists of their own, events or people I didn’t see coming. I love when that happens, even if I have to rewrite a chapter or two, because it usually is better for the story.

Q - Do you know how the story will end before you begin? In a general way or a specific one?

Since I’m fiercely partial to satisfying endings, I know the good guys will win, I know the planet or the galaxy will be saved. Unless it’s a series, then one threat should remain, or I will allow one villain to escape to stir trouble again in the next book. And if it’s a romance, I know the hero and the heroine will end up happily together at the end. I hate it when the author kills the hero at the end. My readers would never forgive me if I killed my hero or my heroine (unless they can be resurrected - Sci-fi and fantasy sometimes offer that option). I usually know what tremendous event or battle or plot twist or struggle will determine the final victory. How will the characters get to that event? I have no idea. I trust that if I gave them the right personality, conflicts will arise, weaknesses will have to be overcome, and if I gave them the right tools, they will grow enough to accomplish the feat and get their well deserved victory and happiness in the end.

Q - Do you choose settings you know or do you have books of settings and plans of houses sitting around?

Since I write mostly Sci-fi and fantasy, in futuristic or historical settings, it’s usually not a place I visited. I might have visited the ruins of a medieval castle, but I’ve never lived on a spaceship, or on a space station at the fringe of conquered space... at least not that I know of. My husband believes I’m a time traveler and I come from the future. They must have erased my memories, because I can’t remember that at all. New Earth, in the CHRONICLES OF KASSOUK series, is an imaginary planet. To remind me of what settings and characters look like, I make posters, collecting portraits and photos evoking the kind of surrounding I pictured in my mind. Sometimes I post these pictures on my website, when I do not yet have a cover for the book, so my readers can get a feel for the story by looking at characters and settings.

Q - Where do you do your research? On line or from books?

It depends on what I am researching. If I’m looking for pictures (I’m very visual) I research online. Then I make a poster for my new story. If my story is set in a known galaxy, I research that galaxy on reliable websites, (NASA, Scientific sites, Space discoveries, etc.) to make sure I have my facts straight. All this time, I think about the cover, because all my publishers ask me for input. Some say I’m lucky I have such good covers, but I don’t think it’s luck. I spend a lot of time thinking about covers and express the mood for the cover in descriptive words. Of course, I take into account the style of each publisher. When my suggestions are good and appropriate for the publisher, the cover artists usually get it.

But if I want to re-familiarize myself with the feel for a place where I’ve been before, I read novels set in that particular town or area, preferably from authors who lived there. If it’s a series, like the Borealis series, the Ancient Enemy series, or the Chronicles of Kassouk, I re-read the previous books in that series to refresh my memory. For Noah’s Ark, the Prequel to the Chronicles of Kassouk, scheduled for release April 1, 2012, I had to remember all the threads I had sowed along the four books of the series, remind myself of all the references to the past, in order to concoct a story that would take into account all the facts, legends, and beliefs I had created over the past two years. I know that if I miss something, my loyal readers will notice, and I do not want to disappoint them.

Thank you so much for having me as a guest on this blog.
