Tuesday's Writer's Tip - Change and Plot #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #writing #tip #plot #change

When plotting your story, you must make sure your character experiences a change at the beginning of the book. The change may be small or large but the greater the change, the more powerful the ending. To have the character be essentially unchanged at the book makes the action seem static.

What does this change have to be? If a charactr is weak in the beginning, the change must show strength. Think of the heroine who is afraid to trust any man. Through the story she learns to trust. Sometimes a lot of action can make this change seem unnecessary. Many times in a mystery, the detective doesn't really change other than being successful in capturing the villain. So think about how your character will change as you write your book

Tuesday's Writer's Tip Beyond Formula #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Writing #Formula

You've studied the story you're working on and found ways to mirror and echo things that have happened before. Many forms of fiction have rigid and restrictive rules on how the stories are told. But there are stories in these genres that are wonderful. Think on this. Formulas are as rigid as you let them be. Sometimes you can step beyond these rules. When I wrote Murder and Mint Tea, I knew who would be murdered but I didn't know who the villain would be. I set about th tell first the impact the murdered character had on the neighborhood. I've had criticisms about the murder not happening until more than half way through the story. But this story first published in 1998 is still one of my best selling manusctipts.

Formulas and accepting external guidelines is important but so is not being afrain to turn the formulas around,
