Wishing you all a safe and happy ending to the past year
Katherine Miller - The pale winter sun shone through the kitchen window. I cleaned up the last of the mess from my adventure. The caper hadn’t gone as planned. How many do? In my many years of life, most of my plans have taken an unexpected turn.
Merup.” Robespierre my Maine Coon cat announced a visitor on the way. He’s almost as good as a doorbell. The firm rap on the door told me this wasn’t one of my female friends. “Come in.”
Pete Duggan strode across the room and thrust a bouquet of bright carnations into my hands. A red hue, almost as vivid as his hair, stained his face. “Mrs. Miller, got to hand it to you. I’ve come to eat crow.”
To hide a smile I buried my face in the flowers and inhaled the spicy fragrance. “How about chocolate chip cookies and mint tea instead?”
“Sounds great.” He straddled one of the chairs at the table and picked up the local newspaper. “Local Woman Thwarts Robbers.” His grin made him look like the ten-year-old who had moved into the corner house on my block. He cleared his throat. “The guys at the station ribbed me about this. Did you forget the plan?”
How, when the idea to catch the real thieves had been mine? A series of burglaries had plagued the neighborhood for months and had troubled me. Especially when the police had decided two teenage neighbor boys were the culprits. I knew the pair and had disagreed strongly enough to set myself up as a victim. Then I informed Pete.
“Did you forget?” he repeated. “When I crept up the stairs and saw you grappling with one of the men, I nearly had a heart attack.”
Heat singed my cheeks. “How was I to know my date would poop out early?”
Edward Potter, Maria and Paul - The arrival of Edward Potter, pastor of St. Stephens, ended Pete’s visit. The small, dapper man’s ringing tenor voice dripped with sympathy and gossip. While he regaled me with stories I would rather not have heard, Paul and Maria Prescott arrived. I eyed the thermos in Maria’s hand and sighed in anticipation. One of my wishes had come true.
“Mrs. Miller, I was so sorry you have the accident and I am not here to give you the help. When Paul and I come home last night Mrs. Sarah tell us you have the misfortune. I have brought the tea.”
Edward coughed. I made the introductions without mentioning Paul and Maria’s last name. Edward’s face showed a hint of disapproval. He stared at the gold hoop dangling from Paul’s ear. Edward kissed my cheek. “Katherine, I’ll keep you in my prayers.”
Would his prayers be for my healing of about my choice of friends? I hadn’t told Edward that Paul owns the most successful antique store in town or that Prescott Reproductions is on the way to success. Maria designs jewelry and has a growing reputation in her field.
Rachel and children - Mrs. Miller, so nice to meet you. Andrew has told me so much about you.” Her voice reminded me of whipped cream. Tight jeans hugged her hips and slender waist. Her red tee short emphasized the size of her breasts. As she walked toward me I realized she was braless. “So nice to finally meet you.”
“So good of you to come down.” The expression in her blue eyes belied her words. “Andrew said you were confined to bed because of an accident.”
“He’s over-protective. Being confined makes me edgy. I’m practicing to escape.”
Her throaty laughter held a slight wheeze. Was she a smoker? “Good for you.” With feline grace she sat on the chair. “I’ll have to apologize for instant coffee.
“That’s fine.”
“Did you say you’d fixed a platter?” I nodded. “That’s so nice. You’re every bit as nice as Andrew said.” She ran a hand along her arm in a lover-like gesture. “When you leave, one of the kids can go with you.”
Thoughts of the sullen Tim in my apartment brought a chill. “Susie. She’s about the same age as my granddaughter.”
“Andrea, right? I saw her picture in Andrew’s office.” Her smile hinted of secret knowledge. “A lovely child. Poor Susie’s so awkward. I think she’s a changeling. I was never awkward. Neither was her father.”
I put my cup down. “Most children outgrow their awkward stage.”
“Maybe she will.” She leaned forward. “Now I see why your son is such a warm and caring person.”
Warmth had never described Andrew. Contained, efficient, inhibited, role-playing were words that came to mind. What part had he chosen to play for Rachel? Understanding doctor, comforting friend, sympathetic teacher? I shivered and reached for the crutches. “Thanks for the coffee. I’ll let you get on with settling in.”

Editorial Review: Janet Lane Walters has written a story that will take you to another time and place. She gives vivid descriptions of her characters and their role in this story. Ms. Walters has constructed a civilization so real that you will feel its very existence. A place where men rule women as chattel for their sexual needs, and three evil rulers who drain their bodies of their very essence for spells and to gain power. There is betrayal and treachery inside of plots, as each priest plans to rule alone. Ashiera, Egeria, and Dian are bound to the spirits of the ones who came before them. They discover a truth that will astound them, and have them doubting their chosen path. They will experience a love that is forbidden and discover that two stand together better than one. I could feel the emotional struggle between love and destiny, described so passionately by the author. I hope Ms. Walters plans to continue this story. I could feel that this is just the beginning of this tale. Janet Walters book, Moon Bright, Moon Dark will go on my keeper shelf, beside such authors as Charlotte Boyett-Compo and Nancy Gideon. I give this story Five Hearts and recommend it highly. Enjoy!
EXCERPT:
Eclipse
The setting sun brought shadows creeping along the mountain slopes. From the battle lines stretched across the plateau, the smell of blood mingled with the dust. Metal clanged against metal. Shouts, curses and screams filled the air. The moans of the wounded broke the Seer’s concentration on the amber light streaming from the crystal atop her staff. The beam sent a jagged pattern through the growing darkness.
A piercing cry
arose. The ruby ray from the Warrior’s sword shot toward the sky. The Healer
darted among the fallen and knelt beside the sorely wounded woman. Blue light
from the Healer’s wand focused on the Warrior’s wounds. The Healer poured
life-sustaining energy through the azure beam.
Gusts of wind drove
thick waves of fog from the mountain peaks to obscure the plain and to cover
the retreat of the women. A cluster of the servants of the Mistress of the
Moons, clad in tunics of amber, red and blue, stumbled after those who bore the
Warrior. They carried her between a pair of standing stones into a narrow
passage that led to a crater lake and the Place of Choosing.
The Seer stumbled
and would have fallen if the Healer hadn’t caught her arm. Together they moved
through the fog. The edges of their cloaks brushed the standing stones.
“How much time have
we?” the Healer asked.
The Seer tightened
her grip on the staff. “I pray enough to complete the ritual before the eclipse
hides the light of the moon.”
The Healer guided
the other woman into the narrow passage. “With the coming of the fog, the
bright moon and the dark moon have risen. We must succeed or all is lost for
the One we serve.”
“Pray our call is
answered before the next eclipse and the time of the lunar of the dark moon.
For now and to all eternity, the thirteenth moon, the dark moon will rise each
year to fill the sky.”
“We must wait
thirteen years before this comes to pass. Pray the Mistress of the Moons will
hold the Queen of Darkness at bay so the ones we call will have a chance.”
“Unless those who
serve the Lord of Shadows call the Queen forth.”
The Healer sucked in
a breath. “Never will the ones who serve the shadowed one share the rule.”
The Seer sighed.
“Mistress bless. So be it. We will call, the Three will come and all will be as
it has been. Unlike those in the other nomes, we can’t allow a drastic change
to alter what we’ve built.”
“Agreed,” the Healer
said.
They emerged from
the passage and walked across the rock-strewn earth to the crater lake. The
walls on three sides formed a crescent around the pool.

Transitions are vital to our stories. They do a number ofthings in a book. They take us from character to character, to new placces or new times. to either speed the story or slow the story down, strong tracsitions are necessary. sometimes stringing scenes one after another without a transition can bewilder the reader.
A transition can be short of long. Ofted using a date line can be a transition between times. Other times the transition can be rather lengthy such as a bit of exposition showing bywords that there is a change of person, place or time.Always a transition shows the reader a change. But transitions can also show a continuation of what has gone before. A man or woman can make a plan and perhaps hours, days, weeks, months or years later what they planned comes to fruition. Transitions show the continuity of a story.

Meander 1 - Reading - Am busily reading the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt novels. Many years ago, Iread them in print, not all of them but a sporadic bunch. I have them on my Kindle and have read a few i read before and some I haven't. The Victorian age setting is interesting and Ann Perry gives a view of the worldof that time and some clever murders.
Meander 2 - Thoughts - Christmas presents. This year,my granddaughter gave me a tee shirt with perhaps a dozen dragons pictured. There is also a sweatshirt that says 'All I want for Christmas is a Dragon." They came in bunches this year. Twoof my grandchildren bought me dragons. One is a book mark and the other consists of five figures. Shame they can't join the fifteen dragons on the Christmas tree. They are displayed now on the shelf above my computer. Actually if I receive any more, I'll need a second shelf. Love my dragons.
Meander 3 - Writing - Working on the rough draft of Committee and I thought there were only two more chapters to go. Then I discovered a big hole, actually a gully. Now I;m filling in that hole and may need another chapter. Book seems endless in a way.

Katherine is a retired nurse and a retired church organist. The small Hudson River village where she lives in her Victorian “Painted Lady” makes her the neighborhood matriarch. Along with her Maine Coon Cat Robespierre, she guards friends and families.
The first book in the Katherine Miller mysteries. The idea for this came to me as I watched developments in my neighborhood. None of the things happened as portrayed but my wild imagination took over and this book is a what could have happened.

Would the Voice of Midran in Incal learn where they were?
Murder and Mint Tea
Katherine is a retired nurse and a retired church organist. The small Hudson River village where she lives in her Victorian “Painted Lady” makes her the neighborhood matriarch. Along with her Maine Coon Cat Robespierre, she guards friends and families.

Editorial Review
Murder and Mint Tea is a gem in its genre, combining the voice of a classic American whodunit with that of a traditional British detective novel. Murder She Wrote meets Miss Marple in a beautifully crafted tale that makes the reader want to reach into the pages and dispense justice to the villainess themselves. ~ Writer Gail Roughton

1. Tell me about your latest release or the book you wish to feature? Genre? Incal is a fantasy with some bits of romance. This is the fourth book of the Moon Rising Series and is the story of triplets separated when they reached the age of five and trained in three areas. Warrior, Healer and Seer. This is also of three hlf brothers who follow the same training.
2. Where did the idea arise?
When I wrote the first book in the series, I wasn't sure there would be more. Then the idea caem for the second where the four countries were mentioned. Years later, I decided to complete the series. Thus the first of the four countries was born, Nilos. Incal is the second of these areas, a land of mountains and forests.
3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?
The researchwas done about mountains and forests, plus a bit of Peru which resembles the land on Incal. I also re-read the other books in the series to pick up some of the feeling of the books. I usually stay on point when researching and since I have pages of material on the other books in the series, the researdh was more for geography.
4. How long did you take to write the book?
This book took about four months to complete.
5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?
I'vebeen writing since the dark ages of typewriters and carbon paper. I've been published for over fifty years but there was time out to raise four children, return to college for two degrees, a BA in English and a BS in Nursing. I was born under the sign of Cancer with with six of the planets in that sign.
6. Do you write in a number of genres of stick to one?
7. Where on the internet
can you be found?

A preview of Incal Book 4 of Moon Rising series to be released on January first.
Coya dreamed of days long past. Once again she saw herself as a child of five playing with her sisters. On the day of the summer solstice they had been born and had thrived. Three daughters in a single voice had been deemed a miracle. Her dreams slid to the day they had been sent away to different places. Their Mother ailed and grew weaker everyday. The dream fragmented. She was alone, taken from her sisters by a strange woman to a series of caves. They stood at the entrance of a dark hole in a granite cliff.
“This is your new home.
Here you will learn how to fight. You will learn the sword and knife and ways
to use your arms and legs against the enemy. Perhaps you will be the one to aid
Midra, Mistress of the Moon to her proper place in Incal.”
Those words had ended her
childhood. From that day she had learned not only physical skills but reading,
writing and numbers. She had also been taught about honor and justice.
Her body moved toward
wakening. She fought to return to the days when she’d been one of three. For so
long memories of her sisters and lain dormant. Why did she remember them now?
Was this a portent of the future?
“Coya, wake.”
The voice sounded
unfamiliar. She shook her head. Why must she wake? Yearning for those forgotten
days drew her like a cord to remain with happy times. Twenty years had passed
since she had been with her sisters. Her eyes fluttered open. The snores and
breath sounds of the sleepers in the room lulled her. They slept. She wanted to
join them and return to her dream memories.
“Coya, Wake.”
The voice sounded loud and
drove sleep away. She slid from beneath the covers. Her feet hit the cold
stones of the cave floor. She gasped at the shock.
“Come,” the voice urged.
“The time has come. The moon rises full.”
She shook her head. Who
had spoken? At first she had thought the woman’s voice had been the Eldest’s. Not so. No one she remembered hearing
had been the speaker. She searched her memories and failed to identify the
speaker of the call. The need to obey strengthened.
She found her clothes and
donned a divided skirt and tunic. The summer had arrived but the nights
remained cold. She lifted her jacket from the hook on the bedpost. Carrying her
boots she made her way among the beds of the sleeping students and reached the
outer corridor. There she leaned against the stone wall and pulled on the
leather boots. With care she wrapped the ties around the boots drawing them
against her skin. As she strode forward the reinforced soft soles made no
sound.
Coya hurried to the main
room. Moonlight filtered through holes in the dome. The Eldest sat on a wooden
bench. Her graying hair shone in the moonlight.
“Well come, Coya. The time
has arrived for you to prove yourself.”
Coya sucked in a breath.
Was she ready? Doubts circled in her thoughts. For years she had studied the
ways of the sword. Would she fail as others of her age mates had? Her hands
clenched until her knuckles whitened. Forcing them to relax she released a held
breath. “Tell me what I must do.”
The elderly woman smiled.
“You know the ritual for the making of a sword. We have taught you how to
locate metals hidden in the earth. You know the ones you must weld together
using the power of your mind to forge them into a sword that you will draw from
the depth.”
Coya nodded. “I know what
to do. Where should I perform the casting, forging and drawing the sword?”
“Go to the grove where the
statue of Midra, Mistress of the Moon stands. Perform the ritual in the spot
where the moon pierces the grove’s canopy. Then return with or without the
forged blade. I will await you here.”

Join the authors at MFRWHooks for some great excerpts here http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com Mine if from Moon Pool a collection of novellas by Jane Toombs and myself.
Blurb:
In the center of the maze at an Adirondack resort lies a spring-fed pool. Legend says that if you look into the serene depths under a full moon, you’ll see the face of your true love. In this collection of four novellas, the magic of the Moon Pool touches the lives of eight people for whom love seems to be a dream that can never be reality:
Thea — who lost her one true love because she couldn’t bear the scorn of others.
Faith — who has given up on love in the face of responsibility.
Lynn— who settled for practicality when she yearned for poetry.
and
Cynthia — whose reputation for selfishness was no match for love.
Excerpt:
Holding the promise close, she hurried to the Lodge. Wait until she saw Luke and told him. Happiness threatened to erupt. Thea, grind, nerd and all those other names her peers called her, had found her true love. Thea who had never had a date until this summer had found her perfect mate.
Luke was the best-looking of the Lodge’s summer employees. Tall, dark-haired Luke was hers. They had so many common interests. When they weren’t making love, they talked and seldom disagreed.
She thought of the way the other female employees and some of the younger guests had flirted with him. Thea laughed. From the moment their eyes met, they had been a couple.
Thea hurried back to the inn. She arrived on the second floor and began her evening routine. She opened the first of her assigned rooms, folded down the covers and placed a chocolate on each pillow. She entered the bathroom to make sure there was a good supply of fluffy towels.
“Thea.”
She walked to the door. Her friend leaned against the wall. “You finished already?”
“Just. You’re running late and I know why.” Sue giggled. “Saw you and Luke sneak off.”
“For ten minutes. No big deal.”
Sue cocked her head. “I wanted to catch you before you two disappeared to make-out.”
The knowing look in Sue’s eyes caused Thea to stiffen. They had been friends since grade school. Thea had often wondered why the friendship had continued through high school and into college. Sue was pretty and popular. Her attention was flattering and brought Thea into the center of events. Thea still helped Sue with her studies. She’d even written papers for her friend. Sometimes Thea wondered if being on the fringes of the in-crowd was worth the effort. If she dropped Sue, where would another friend be found? Thea smiled. There was Luke.
Thea closed the door and walked to her next room. “Luke and I do more than make-out. We talk about serious matters.”
“Sure you do.” Sue grinned. “Just wanted to let you know there’s a party in the guest lounge to celebrate Luke’s birthday.”
“He never mentioned one to me.”
Sue’s smile turned sly. “For good reason. Guess he didn’t want you to know today he turns seventeen. Surprised me when I learned. He looks and acts our age.”
Thea swallowed. Luke was only seventeen. She’d be twenty-two in November. “But he’s a junior in college. He’s pre-med.”
“Heard he’s a genius. Double major, too.” Sue stepped back. “You two are quite the topic in the staff lounge. Some of the girls call you a cradle-snatcher. I told them if you’d known his age you would have cut him cold.”
Thea felt her face flame. How could she have made such a fool of herself? Luke was seventeen. She could be in real trouble. Everyone knew and laughed at her. “Look, we’re just friends. We talk about medicine and surgery.”
Sue arched a brow. “With a few anatomy lessons thrown in. Don’t blame you one bit. I wouldn’t mind a night or two exploring his body. He is one gorgeous hunk. See you.”
Thea waited until Sue vanished down the rear stairs. She quickly finished her rooms and fled to the staff sleeping quarters. Tears stung her eyes. Why hadn’t he told her before she’d become the staff’s joke of the summer?
She splashed water on her face. Luke would be at the reflecting pool. She intended to let him know how she felt about his deception.

Pacing in a story is important. Stories are made up of scened but a string of scenes don't make a story. Each scene must be aware of what went before and what is to come in the future. Not blatently but with subtle effects. These scenes also show further development of your characters and also of the plot. The consequences a past scenes needs to show as well as a building toward the next crisis. Pacing is the rhythm the writer developes as the scenes of the story unfold.

eander 1 - Reading - In the past week I've read a few books, Read Uncommon vows by Mary Jo Putney. Somehow I'd never read it before and I thought I had all her historicals. Enjoyed the book. Also finished the first three Books of Anne Perry's Pitt series and started on the second three books. Old friends met again.
Meander 2 - Thoughts - Finally have the Christmas decorations up. The tree looks wonderful and all the ornaments are finally on. Took me three days since I work slowly. The crustal trees and figures are displayed and the lights make them glow with colors. I wonder how many more eyars I'll do this. Some of the ornaments are ancient. At least one almostas old as I am. It's fun to have memoriesof other Christmases.
Meander 3 Writing - Going slowly as always at this time of eyar. Hopefully I'll finish the last three chapters in rough form before the month ends. I can only hope.

Second-year university student Edie Whitecrow gobbles up each course on Indigenous studies. If only she could experience the lives of her Anishinaabe ancestors instead of reading about them. A scarecrow figure beckons Edie to enter with the enticing offer of making her biggest wish come true. She jumps at the chance and finds herself in the past, face to face with the man who haunts her dreams—the handsome brave Thunder Bear. He claims he’s spent twelve years waiting for Gitche Manidoo to send her to him.
