This was a fun, short, and sexy read. While there isn’t a whole lot of character development, the story moves quickly, pulling the reader along. There is a lot of sex in this, to the point where I would categorize this as an erotic romance novella, which I wasn’t expecting. There was a plot, but the romance and passion between the two characters were definitely the main focus. Plus, certain elements of the plot had me scratching my head in confusion or needing to suspend belief. In other words: Romeo and Juliet with less drama, more sex, and a happy ending, all with a tad of fairy tale magic thrown in. Oh, and some amazing and delicious sounding dishes.

My only big complaint about the book is that it needs editing. There were quite a few comma mistakes, not to mention other grammatical errors, which kept pulling me out of the story. The grammar errors aside, this makes for a fun quick summer read, and I am interested in seeing what happens with Meg in book 2.

***I received a copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review***

I’m not a grammar freak so the few typos I found didn’t make me shave off one star in my rating. However, some story line issues did. I don’t like spoilers so, as an example, I’ll just say that bondage requires intimacy and trust, which partners only achieve as a relationship progresses. Also, the blurb mentions a Blakefield curse: love at first sight. That wasn’t exactly how things happened so I was a bit disappointed.

Because this is a short-story, I expected things to progress fast so the timeline of Greg and Allie’s affair didn’t bother me. After all, I could see many elements from Romeo and Juliet in Seducing the Chef. It’s almost like a modernized version where you’ll find the balcony, instant passion, an old feud, and misfortune fueled by misleading information. Although it isn’t a tragedy as the classic story of the star-crossed lovers, it’s also not a romantic comedy as its category describes it. But it’s a story that will make you feel good, hot, and bothered in the best way possible. The sex scenes are mouthwatering just as I like them. After all, being an erotica writer, sex scenes are my domain and I know how hard it is to write good ones. Janet Lan-Walters did a great job here. Kudos.

I recommend Seducing the Chef if you’re looking for a quick, entertaining read to heat up your summer nights.

“Seducing the Chef” by Janet Lane-Walter is part of the ‘At First Sight’ series. This contemporary romance centers around chef Greg Ramsey and review magazine editor Allie Blakefield whose searing attraction threatens to become disrupted by a tragic family feud between their respective parents. Navigating the tricky challenges to find a way to be together may require a very special dish…of crow.

This relatively short story is a quick and breezy reworking of the traditional family feud theme a la Romeo and Juliet but given a wonderfully sensual twist. I had trouble believing that the offspring could be so ignorant of the feud and would have liked a bit more depth to the characters but I enjoyed the descriptions of the culinary journey (yum) and appreciated the setup for the next story in the series, in addition to the very long preview. The author has nice imagery and I think this was an enjoyable light story.

Smoking hot!

Wow … when the blurb says “love at first sight” it isn’t kidding. The relationship between our hero and heroine goes from zero to 60 in about two pages.

I read this story knowing it was short, so I understand that it’s tough to fully develop a plot or characters in so few pages. I’ve tried to figure that into my feelings about the book, and into my rating. The author is definitely talented. Her skill is undeniable and her voice is fun and easy to read, and I have no issue with that at all. And, although there were a few editing errors and wrong word use, technically, it was a good story.

My issue was the speed of the relationship development. “Love at first sight” doesn’t have to mean leaping into bed moments after meeting someone (and before knowing anything about them … integral to the story is the fact their families are enemies, but since they barely get each other’s first names before getting naked, they have no idea). They progress quickly to a little very light bondage, which felt out of place since that requires a bit of trust and how do you build real trust in a day? I’m not adverse to a story with plenty of sex (especially well-written sex, which this was, though a bit less descriptive than erotic romance), so it wasn’t that abundance that was frustrating, just that I felt as if the plot suffered because so much space was given to sex instead of story.

Still, I really did appreciate the author’s voice and I would definitely pick up another one of her books to try. And if you prefer lots of heat in your stories, this may be a great choice for you to read.

Tangled Dreams is featured with Thursday's opening scene #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #romance #child shared #leukemia #devastated father

Janine Rhodes lifted her giggling charge into her arms and strode toward the cabin. She chuckled. Only a rich man would consider the sprawling structure a cabin. The rustic log cabin portion contained a large main room, kitchen, eating area and a powder room. A massive stone wing held eight bedrooms and five complete bathrooms.

Tammy wiggled free and ran toward the path leading to the swimming pool and cabana. Laughter trailed after her. “Catch me.”

Janine snatched her up. “Snack time. Then nap.”

“No.” The toddler yawned and rubbed her eyes.

Janine tapped Tammy’s nose. “You’re months away from being a terrible two.” Her feet crunched colorful fallen leaves blown from the woods. Only a few white clouds floated in the sky. A warm day for early October.

At the door, Janine turned to admire nature’s bright colors. Red, yellow and orange leaves adorned the trees. The dark green of pines formed a background.

Janine sighed. This job was the best she’d ever had. As well as leaving her weekends free for school, Andi and Rob had become friends.

She stepped into the large room and removed hers and Tammy’s jackets. After a hand wash, she popped the toddler into the high chair and poured a cup of juice and found cookies. While Tammy ate, Janine filled a mug with coffee. She sipped the rich aromatic brew and sighed with pleasure. The coffee here tasted like a treat.

Her glance flowed around the kitchen. She didn’t know what halt the appliances did but this was a chef’s dream. A long island separated the dining area from the kitchen. A large fireplace dominated one wall. Two dark brown leather couches fronted the hearth. A pair of recliners faced a large screen television.

By the time Tammy finished her snack, her eyelids drooped. Janine lifted the toddler and went to the powder room to wipe the child’s face and hands. A loud pounding at the door startled her. Tammy screamed.

“It’s all right.” Janine rubbed the little girl’s back.

Had to be a friend. Only friends knew the combination to the gate at the foot of the long driveway. Anyone else had to call the house to be let in. Before she had a chance to check the monitor, the loud rapping sounded again. She opened the door.

A tall man she recognized brushed past her. “Mr. Quinn, is something wrong?”

“Where’s Rob?”

“In his office. I’ll let him know you’re here.” Her employer’s attorney’s green eyes flashed. Anger or fear? His hair looked as if someone had run fingers through the thick dark hair.

“Don’t bother.” He strode toward the bedroom wing.

Janine watched him rush away. Was there trouble at the movie studio?

Tammy rubbed her face on Janine’s shoulder. She patted the child’s back. “To bed.” She entered the hall.

She heard Nate shouting. Janine sighed. Though from the first time she’d seen Nate Quinn, she’d felt an attraction but she knew there was no chance for any relationship. He still grieved for his wife who had died a year ago. An impossible dream. There were too many tangled threads to unravel.

Tammy popped her thumb into her mouth. “Bear.” Janine entered the bedroom wing.

Rob’s office door stood open. Nate Quinn’s near shouts flowed into the hall. “What am I going to do? I can’t lose him to that damned disease.”

Though she shouldn’t remain and eavesdrop, Janine froze in place. Curiosity gripped like an iron glove. Did he mean his eight year old son was ill?

Her arms tightened around Tammy. She should leave but she had to know what made him sound angry and defeated.

“He’s been tired lately so two days ago, I took him to see Andi. She ran some tests and called me around noon, wanted Davey admitted to the hospital. She asked Dr. Chou to see him.”

“Did you?” Rob asked.

“Yah. I just left him there and fled in a panic. I can’t endure anything going wrong.”

Janine edged along the all and stared at the open door. Nate Quinn looked ready to collapse or cry.

“Dr. Chou is excellent,” Rob said.

“That’s what Andi said.”

“What’s the diagnosis?”

“Leukemia.”

Those words brought a rush of tears to Janine’s eyes. Tammy wiggled. Before the little girl cried, Janine loosened her hold and stepped into the child’s bedroom. Janine’s knees buckled. She drew deep breaths to calm her raging thoughts. She bit her lip and focused on her charge.

“Nap time.”

Tammy popped her thumb into her mouth “’Kay.”

Janine lowered the little girl into her crib. She tucked the white bear into Tammy’s arms. Janine left the bedroom and hurried down the hall without pausing to listen.

She sank on one of the brown leather couches and wrapped her arms around her waist. What would she do now? The urge to cry nearly overwhelmed her. She had come to Fern Lake for two reasons. To enroll in the Master’s program in Child Psychology. And to fulfill a request made by a dying woman.

Footsteps muffled by the thick area rug caused her to turn her head. Nate Quinn lumbered past. His slumped shoulders concerned her. “Mr. Quinn, are you all right?”

“There’s nothing you can do. Just mind your own business.”

But… His scowl and sharp tone chilled her. Did he know who she was? A tear trickled over her cheek. Once again she was attracted to a man who had no use for her. Good thing she’d kept her identity hidden. More tears fell.

Once the crying bout ended, she wiped her eyes. She filled a mug with coffee and glanced at the clock. Soon, Andi would be home and she could leave. She walked to the child’s room. Tammy rolled over. Janine returned to the main room and to her coffee and the book.

Keltoi, The third of the opposites #MFRWHooks #BWLAuthor #Romantia #Paranormal romance

Join the Authors at MFRWHooks here :http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com for some interesting excerpts. Mine is from Keltoi found at https://wwweclecticwriter.blogspot.com  and introduces the third of the second trio

BLURB:
Two friends have been tested and are acclaimed as a Healer and a Seer. Now the friend who will be the Warrior faces her test. When she succeeds the three travel through a tunnel and down to the lakeside believing they will be sent to an Isle where three crystals stand, one red, one blue and one green. Instead they are told they are part of the Three and three and must find the others.

Three brothers separated as soon as one of them reaches the age of five. They were taken by their father, Prime Voice of Midra in Keltoi. They have all displeased him and have been punished. They escape from their different prisons and must find their way.

Each of the meetings between the two warriors, the two Healers and the Two Seers is an adventure that binds them together. As Three and Three, they must meet the enemy and win.

EXCERPT:

His lip curled. Prime Voice, his father, was an evil man. Loran knew there was nothing he could do to change his father now. In the future? Perhaps. In a flash memories of his brothers rose. Where were they?

As he struggled to read the tattered scroll frustration rose. Three will…What would they do? More words. Healer can. Some broken words/ Warrior and Seer will bring… What? A long section of ink faded to a whisper held the answer but he couldn’t sound out the words.

In frustration, his hands fisted. After drawing a deep breath, he pushed back from the table. To act might destroy the rest of the scroll. He couldn’t do that.

A series of bells began. He counted and frowned. Six bells. Time for the evening meal. Where had the day gone. He hadn’t heard twelve bells to match the midday meal. He returned the scroll to the shelf and pinched the flames of the candles. He left the room and dashed along the halls to the refectory. There he found a place at a table. Soup, meat and vegetables were served. After he finished his portion, he considered returning to the library to search for other scrolls that might provide answers. A jaw cracking yawn reminded him of his exhaustion. He left his place and walked to his cell. If he could leave this place, could he find his brothers? He couldn’t remember how to find the hut in the forest where they had lived. He couldn’t even remember their names. He curled beneath the blanket and opened his mind to the winds.  Before he had a chance to begin a search, sleep claimed him.

The peal of the morning bells woke him. He counted seven chimes, rose, washed and dressed. He scurried to the refectory and carried a bowl of porridge to the table.

He looked toward the head table and quickly bent his head. What was prime Voice doing here? He seldom ate meals in the refectory but ate in his private quarters either alone or with another Voice. Loran’s gut churned but he forced himself to eat.

Before  long, other trainees joined him. While listening to their chatter, he read the winds in the room, Once he finished, he slipped from the room and hurried to the isolated room where scrolls were kept.

He looked for the tattered scroll from yesterday and couldn’t locate it. Odd, he thought. He selected another one and removed the metal case.

Someone entered the small room. Loran stood and saw his father and bowed. Why was Prime Voice here?

His father strode to the table and placed a scroll on the table. Loran saw the missing one. “And?”

“I want you to read of this all you can.”

Loran touched the scroll. “As you can see this is badly damaged. What I found yesterday makes no sense.”

“Don’t defy me. Read.” Prime Voice sat at the table across from Loran.

Loran smoothed the parchment, taking care not to do further damage. “As you can see much of this scroll is damaged and there are missing words and phrases.” He leaned closer. “They will bring…” He held the candle over the blurred words. “Healer healing Seer. He looked up. “Reading is impossible.”

Prime Voice glared. “I order you to continue.:

Fear engulfed Loran. His hands shook. Wax from the candle dripped on the parchment.

Prime Voice grasped Loran’s shoulder. “You clumsy fool. Are you trying to destroy the scroll?”

“No sir.” He could barely force the words out.”

Prime Voice slapped Loran’s right cheek and then the left. He jerked him to his feet and pushed him toward the door. Loran fell. Rage rose but he could not react. Prime Voice gestured to his guards.

“Take him. Lock him in a deep cell.” His eyes narrowed. “He will remain there until I find a replica of the ruined scroll.”

Protests rose to choke Loran. He dare not argue. His face stung from the blows. A guard grasped either arm. Though thoughts of fighting filled his thoughts he realized the futility of such action.

The swordsmen marched him to a ramp and led him down. At the bottom, they opened a door and thrust him inside. The door clanged behind him.

Loran drew deep breaths and fought to calm the anger he felt for such unjust punishment. How could a person read words that had faded into blurs
