Three Books by Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #romance #fantasy #medical suspense #eomance

The article passed around the table on a hot August night. “Five to ten percent of the nation’s doctors are so impaired or incompetent they cannot or should not practice medicine.” The nurses at Bradley Memorial thought they had them all. That night they formed a group they called The Committee of Angels.

Nearly a year has passed and Laura Bancroft wonders why little has been done to change things. She also wonders about some of the nurses fitting the pattern. Laura has three doctors on her list of incompetents. She seldom meets with the other members and several of the others are upset with her. When her ex-husband joins the medical staff, she realizes she still has feelings for him. One of her list of doctors dies after emergency surgery and Laura finds her suspected since she was assigned to the doctor. She must deal with suspicions, her feelings for her ex. Then a second on her list commits suicide and speaks of blackmail.

Can Laura learn the truth of who is responsible before she faces arrest?

Book Review: Committee of Angels by Janet Lane Walters

1st sentence: Laura scurried down the hospital corridor, feeling like the White Rabbit.

Murder and mayhem with doctors and nurses spike a nicely paced ‘who dunnit.’ Ms. Walters pens the most intriguing characters, and this story pacts a punch bowl full of them.

Excellent gripping read with a surprise and satisfying ending. Couldn’t put the book down once I started. Highly recommended for anyone who likes mysteries and medical dramas with a nice touch of romance.
INCAL _Book 4 Moon Rising

Excerpt:
Risa left her narrow cell in the midwives’ training center. She wore the green divided skirt and tunic favored by those of her calling. In her hand her midwife’s pouch dangled. Today she faced her final testing in the still room. When she completed the trial she would have finished her training and could seek a village to serve. Where would she go? South. The word appeared in her thoughts. How odd. She had no idea why there. Her use of talents for healing not possessed by the other midwives and students kept her status unsettled. Skirting the edge of trouble had been her lot since the day her healing talents had gone beyond dispensing herbal teas and delivering babies. Midwives cared for women, girls and male children until they reached their fifth year. Several times she had treated boys who were older. Reprimands and threats had followed each incident. She closed her eyes. Once again she heard the Eldest’s angry voice. “It matters not if he had the same fever as his sisters. You should have told the family to call an Herbalist. We are forbidden to treat males.” She had only done with her talent had urged. How could she deny a cry for help? Recalling the pounding headache when she walked away from the urging to help brought tears to her eyes. Doing what she could for the ill brought relief. Drawing a deep breath she entered the stillroom. “I’m here.” The gray-haired woman shook her head. “Where else would you be? Are you ready to be tested? You passed yesterday’s tests with high grades.” “I’m ready.” Risa tried to still her racing heart. If she passed today’s test she would be a midwife. “Prepare the following. A birthing cup for a woman whose delivery is taking too long and has stalled. Next mix the herbs to stimulate the flow of a woman’s flow of milk. Also brew a tee to halt excessive bleeding. Finally mix the end of life elixir.” Risa gulped a breath. Of the first three she felt confident she knew the herbs she must blend for each preparation. She had only prepared the last one once. She’d protested giving the woman the elixir. If she’d been permitted to cut into the woman’s abdomen she could have removed the growth. The technique was already used to remove a child from a womb. She’d done that three times and succeeded. Why not do the cutting when a life could be saved? With care she prepared each of the blends. When she finished her hands shook. She looked at the floor. “They’re complete.” The older woman nodded. “Time for dispensing. Bring the teas to the infirmary.”

Coya dreamed of days long past. Once again she saw herself as a child of five playing with her sisters. On the day of the summer solstice they had been born and had thrived. Three daughters in a single voice had been deemed a miracle. Her dreams slid to the day they had been sent away to different places. Their Mother ailed and grew weaker everyday. The dream fragmented. She was alone, taken from her sisters by a strange woman to a series of caves. They stood at the entrance of a dark hole in a granite cliff.

“This is your new home. Here you will learn how to fight. You will learn the sword and knife and ways to use your arms and legs against the enemy. Perhaps you will be the one to aid Midra, Mistress of the Moon to her proper place in Incal.”

Those words had ended her childhood. From that day she had learned not only physical skills but reading, writing and numbers. She had also been taught about honor and justice.

She wanted to join them and return to her dream memories.

“Coya, Wake.”

The voice sounded loud and drove sleep away. She slid from beneath the covers. Her feet hit the cold stones of the cave floor. She gasped at the shock.

“Come,” the voice urged. “The time has come. The moon rises full.”

Thursday Writing Incal #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #fantasy #seer #healer #warrior

When I began Incal, I thought first about the three young women who were to have a main rile in the story.  With a dying mother, as young children, the triplets were separated and each one taking to a different place to grow up. Part of the story concerned them finding each other before they could begin their quet. Then I looked at the three young men. One was the son of the villain. Until I was further into the story, I learned they were half-brothers though only one was recognized by the father. The city of Quito was important in the story since that's where the fighting priests had their training place and where the Voice of Midran in Incal had his base. There may be my favorite characters in the four books ending the series.

The mountains of tis land were interesting to use and some of this was based on reading I had done about the Incas when researching another book. Having bits and pieces to use in other stories is alsays great for a writer.

Friday Year's Ending #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Last year #writing #Books #Medical suspense #fantasy

Last year, I finished threebooks and they saw the light of day Committee of Angels was the first and is a medical suspense with a bit of romance. Incal came out December 31 2o21 but really was this year. Seppal is a fantasy and the fifth book in a series.

Writing these books was fun. I also began two books that will perhaps never make the internet at this moment until I'm ready to self-publish them.

EXCERPT:

The marble figure of the goddess bathed by moonlight appeared to beckon a welcome. The air smelled of spring. Always did no matter the season. Coya walked until she reached a patch of earth before the statue.

“Midra, Mistress of the Moon, I humbly beseech you for a boon. Guide my thoughts as I seek to raise a sword from the hidden ores. Help me find the ones I must fuse together. I will bear the weapon in your name and to your honor.”

She knelt. Her knees touched the dirt. Moonlight formed a circle around her. She pressed her hands against the ground. With her eyes closed she delved with a piercing sight and sought the ores she needed.

Iron, moly, tungsten, platinum and a touch of copper and silver. Then she gathered carbon to bring the heat. She drew the ores together and set the carbon on fire. The ores became a molten liquid deep in the earth. She formed the blade. She drew the edges to sharpness. Done. She inhaled deeply. She couldn’t relax yet.

Her hands pressed the ground and slowly she pulled the finished weapon through the layers of the earth. As the sword rose the metal finally cooled. The silver colored sword lay on the ground. Holding her creation high she rose and saluted Midra. With the edge she cut her palm and smeared blood on the blade. “I name you Hope and pray I’ll use you to build a better future for the people of Incal.”

The cut on her hand ceased bleeding. The slash mark changed from a ragged red line into a silvery one. With dancing steps Coya shouted her joyous thanks to Midra. She strode from the grove toward the caves. Elation slowly faded to be replaced by exhaustion and hunger. Her gut growled.

Editorial Review
Murder and Mint Tea is a gem in its genre, combining the voice of a classic American whodunit with that of a traditional British detective novel. Murder She Wrote meets Miss Marple in a beautifully crafted tale that makes the reader want to reach into the pages and dispense justice to the villainess themselves. ~ Writer Gail Roughton

Friday Announcement January first, Incal to be reelased #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Fantasy #sword and sorcery

1. Tell me about your latest release or the book you wish to feature? Genre? Incal is a fantasy with some bits of romance. This is the fourth book of the Moon Rising Series and is the story of triplets separated when they reached the age of five and trained in three areas. Warrior, Healer and Seer. This is also of three hlf brothers who follow the same training.

2. Where did the idea arise?

When I wrote the first book in the series, I wasn't sure there would be more. Then the idea caem for the second where the four countries were mentioned. Years later, I decided to complete the series. Thus the first of the four countries was born, Nilos. Incal is the second of these areas, a land of mountains and forests.

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

The researchwas done about mountains and forests, plus a bit of Peru which resembles the land on Incal. I also re-read the other books in the series to pick up some of the feeling of the books. I usually stay on point when researching and since I have pages of material on the other books in the series, the researdh was more for geography.

4. How long did you take to write the book?

This book took about four months to complete.

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?

I'vebeen writing since the dark ages of typewriters and carbon paper. I've been published for over fifty years but there was time out to raise four children, return to college for two degrees, a BA in English and a BS in Nursing. I was born under the sign of Cancer with  with six of the planets in that sign.

6. Do you write in a number of genres of stick to one?

I write in a number of genres since I seem to become bored writing in one genre all the time. I have romances from sweet to spicy, both contemporary and paranormal. There are cozy mysteries and at elast one medical suspense, I have fantasies for adults and sever written for young people. There are also a few non-fiction books, Once I wrote short stories and poetry being published in both areas.

7. Where on the internet can you be found?

Incal is featured today with Thursday's Opening Scene #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Preview #January 1, Fantasy

A preview of Incal Book 4 of Moon Rising series to be released on January first.

Her body moved toward wakening. She fought to return to the days when she’d been one of three. For so long memories of her sisters and lain dormant. Why did she remember them now? Was this a portent of the future?

“Coya, wake.”

The voice sounded unfamiliar. She shook her head. Why must she wake? Yearning for those forgotten days drew her like a cord to remain with happy times. Twenty years had passed since she had been with her sisters. Her eyes fluttered open. The snores and breath sounds of the sleepers in the room lulled her. They slept.

She shook her head. Who had spoken? At first she had thought the woman’s voice had been the Eldest’s. Not so. No one she remembered hearing had been the speaker. She searched her memories and failed to identify the speaker of the call. The need to obey strengthened.

She found her clothes and donned a divided skirt and tunic. The summer had arrived but the nights remained cold. She lifted her jacket from the hook on the bedpost. Carrying her boots she made her way among the beds of the sleeping students and reached the outer corridor. There she leaned against the stone wall and pulled on the leather boots. With care she wrapped the ties around the boots drawing them against her skin. As she strode forward the reinforced soft soles made no sound.

Coya hurried to the main room. Moonlight filtered through holes in the dome. The Eldest sat on a wooden bench. Her graying hair shone in the moonlight.

“Well come, Coya. The time has arrived for you to prove yourself.”

Coya sucked in a breath. Was she ready? Doubts circled in her thoughts. For years she had studied the ways of the sword. Would she fail as others of her age mates had? Her hands clenched until her knuckles whitened. Forcing them to relax she released a held breath. “Tell me what I must do.”

The elderly woman smiled. “You know the ritual for the making of a sword. We have taught you how to locate metals hidden in the earth. You know the ones you must weld together using the power of your mind to forge them into a sword that you will draw from the depth.”

Coya nodded. “I know what to do. Where should I perform the casting, forging and drawing the sword?”

“Go to the grove where the statue of Midra, Mistress of the Moon stands. Perform the ritual in the spot where the moon pierces the grove’s canopy. Then return with or without the forged blade. I will await you here.”

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading - Still reading Jennifer Fallon's series. Took time out for several other books. The sispects by Joan Havekange - The girls are at it again. This time on a Nordic vacation including a trip to Russia and of course finding a body. Nice tour guide and lots of hints about what is to come. Also read Almost Broken by Edan Monroe - what a powerful story about a man falsely accused of assault and his release still on parole. Lots of emotion and anger and also showing the person who falsely accused him - his mother. This book is intense and manages with twists and turns of emotion.

Meander 2 Thoughts - Am looking at my front porch that is already ready for Halloween. My granddaughter decided the porches in the neighborhood were boring. Now I have a cemetary and creature in my rose garden. There are spider weks and various halloween figures hanging fron the roof edges and other halloween objects on my porch. This has been up since the end of September. She does like Halloween.

Meander 3 - Writing - Have one chapter to type in and then get the book ready to send off to the publisher. I've been slowly working on Committee of Angels and must start thinking beyond the chapters already written.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #Reading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading - Still reading a bit of Mercedes Lackey's series and enjoying them. Began to read some other books. Read Dean L. Hovey's latest Deadly Mixture A great and rather complicated story about drugs and teens and a nes policewoman in town. Also learned more about the continuing characters in this series. Great job.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - Not much since I'm really into finishing a rewrite so the coming book is mostly on mymind. I am sick about reading of the COVID researgence in the country especially since I have a child and grandchildren in Florida. I sure hope that stupid governor of that state would be infused with some common sense and not buy into trumpism. Stuff coming out that makes the former president look very bad. I hope there is hope.

Meander 3 - Writing is going well. Have almost finished six chapters of the long rewrite to make sure everything falls into place. Am ending for the end of September to finish the book. Must do the CAF. Lord I hate doing those things but they're necesary,
