She feels moving from the city will be good for her sons who sometimes choose the wrong friends. What Liz doesn't want is a second husband. The death of her fireman husband made him a hero but devastated her life. She had to return to work and become a single mother. Fortunately her father-in-law has stepped in to care for the boys but he wants to retire to Florida. Though she's attracted to Jeff she wants to deny the attraction.

A small town hospital, a widow and a widower, add a pair of 9-year old twins, mix well and you have the basis for a fast-paced story. In The Gemini-Sagittarius Connection, Walters demonstrates her knowledge of hospitals to make the story real, but does so skillfully without slowing down the read. From the first page to the last, Walters pulls you into the lives of her characters and has you rooting for a happily-ever after ending.

Tuesday's Writer's Tip -more on Off Center Endings #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Writing #Revisions #Endings

Off Center Endings can mean the death of the story. Using the god in the machine to end a story while the story ends, the reader might not believe this could happen. Doing this can ruin the story for the reader. This may end the story with a bang but the reader will scratch their head. Suppose there's a story where rain comes to isolate the characters. To end with the dam bursting an all die, certainly ends the story but doesn't give the reader that feeling of satisfaction a good ending does.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BFWAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading - Still reading Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael series and enjoying the twists and turns of these mysteries as well as learning about medieval times and monestaries.

Meander 2 - Thoughts _Just managed a bit of promotion since I called to see if I managed to fill in a form correctly. Was a bit confusing but I really managed. Then talked th the person who called back to verify that I had done all I needed to do. Pitched my books to her after I learned she was a reader. We'll see if anything comesof that.

Meander 3 - Writing - Am in the process of typing in all the chapters of Committee. Have one more to either re-write or to make lots of changes. Will be happy to finish this book that became not a medical suspense but a romantic suspense in the middle. Took some re-writing on the first chapters but I think it's nowon target.

Book three of the series is from The Wild Rose Press, about a Pittsburgh Lady Lawyer who is trapped in a voodoo mess in New Orleans at Mardi Gras!

When her big trial goes bad, corporate attorney Brianna Ward can’t wait to get out of Pittsburgh. The Big Easy seems like the perfect place to rest, relax, and forget about the legal business. Too bad an obnoxious—but handsome—lawyer from a rival firm is checking into the same bed and breakfast.

Attorney Evan Farrell has Mardi Gras vacation plans too. When he encounters fiery and attractive Brianna, however, he puts the Bourbon Street party on hold. He’d much rather devote himself to her—especially when a mysterious riddle appears in her bag, seeming to threaten danger.

Strangely compelled to follow the riddle’s clues, Brianna is pulled deeper into the twisted schemes of a voodoo priest bent on revenge. To escape his poisonous web, she must work with Evan to solve the curse. But is the growing love they feel for each other real? Or just a voodoo dream?

Friday - Alana Lorens is Visiting and Talking About being a Panster or Plotter #MFRWAuthor #Panster #Plotter #Suspense #Thriller

Pantser or Plotter

Day 1

1. Are you a pantser or a plotter or perhaps a bit of both?

Both, actually. I begin as a pantser—starting with whatever “what if” has caught my attention. For this book, SECOND CHANCES, it was “what if an associate in a law office gets kicked out at 42 with no prospects?” I knew she’d meet her future office mate—and more—but not the details, after that. About halfway through, when I see the character arc coming together, then I put together a chapter by chapter map of what has to happen as we’re moving forward.

2. Which comes first - characters or plot for you?

Definitely characters. In my opinion, people and their wants and choices and emotions drive any story forward, real or fictional, for better or worse.

3. What are you working on now? Is this a book in a current series or something totally new?

I’m editing a manuscript that’s totally different for me. It’s a straight thriller, not a romance, and it jumps around in time (the way THIS IS US has been) building in the backstory in alternating chapters. Of course, in beginning the story with Bet, our protagonist, stumbling out of a burnt out car in the Everglades, with no recollection of how she got there, there’s a lot of mystery about to be revealed!

4. Do you have some kind of object or place that figures in most of your books? I use gems a lot, hospitals and caves.

I don’t, actually. 😊

5. Do you write everyday or just when the spirit hits?\

I do SOMETHING every day. Many days, it’s working on the current new work in progress. Otherwise, it’s editing manuscripts that have yet to be submitted, or doing press for the book about to be released, or writing blog posts for myself or someone else, or hanging with my critique groups, or updating social media or… seems like the writer’s life is never a dull moment!

6. Where can we find you?

Author Bio

Alana Lorens has been a published writer for more than forty years, after working as a pizza maker, a floral designer, a journalist and a family law attorney. Currently a resident of Asheville, North Carolina, the aging hippie loves her time in the smoky blue mountains. She writes romance and suspense as Alana Lorens, and sci-fi, fantasy and paranormal mystery as Lyndi Alexander. She is the author of the Pittsburgh Lady Lawyers series, which draws on her years as a family law attorney in the state of Pennsylvania. One of the causes close to her heart came from those years as well–the fight against domestic violence. She volunteered for many years at women’s shelters and provided free legal services to women and children in need. She lives with her daughter, who is the youngest of her seven children, three crotchety old cats and six others who are in various degrees of insanity.

7. Who are your favorite authors? What about a book you’ve enjoyed?

I grew up on the gothic romance circuit, so Victoria Holt, Dorothy Eden, Barbara Michaels, Mary Stewart, et al. But the other half of me is sci-fi oriented, so I also love Anne McCaffery’s books as well as Stephen King. The Stand is probably one of my all time faves—love the characters in that one.

Ms Lane-Walters is conversant with hospitals and hospital procedures. In this interesting medical romance, she returns to Eastlake Community Hospital in which the first of the series was set. Exhausted, Laurel, whose star sign is Taurus, is an heiress orphaned in tragic circumstances when she was three-years-old. She leaves India, where she has been working for International Health Rescue Mission as part of a team following disasters, dispensing care and training health workers. She has fled from Neil Browne who asked her to marry him, but she did not want all he has to offer her, a roving life. When she arrives in America with the hope of finding a permanent home, Alex Carter, her friend Megan’s brother collects her from the airport. Within next to no time she collapses and is admitted to hospital suffering from pneumonia. Alex, a doctor, father of five-year-old Johnny, is still angry after his divorce and his former wife’s death. There is no room in his life for another spoiled, selfish rich woman so it’s useless for Megan to match make. This is an intriguing novel about two characters with problems which need to be resolved, and Alex’s delightful, but insecure young son, who adores his father and is traumatised by the loss of his mother. The Taurus Scorpio Connection is a story to relax with and enjoy it.

The plane touched down and rolled to a halt. The mass of passengers pushed to the exit like angry ants from a shattered hill. Lauren remained seated. The aisled cleared. A flight attendant paused beside Lauren’s seat. “Are you okay? Would you like assistance, maybe a wheelchair?”

“No chair, but thanks.” Lauren rose and walked to the exit. Using the railing on the right side of the covered tunnel she soon reached the end. The long hours of travel, the fever and the cough plaguing her since the flight from India had drained most of her reserve strength

At the end of the ramp she scanned the milling crowd and looked toward the barrier where people waited. Where was Megan? Without warning a memory of being sixteen and in love rocked Lauren

A tall, blonde, athletic man studied the people emerging from the flight. His glance slid past her. She walked toward him. “Alex Carter, what are you doing here?”

“Lauren Richmond, I’m here to take you to Eastlake.” He clasped her hand.

“I thought Megan was meeting me.”

“She had to work.” His gaze swept over her. “Rough trip? You look exhausted.”

“I’ve been living a hectic life. How did Megan trick you into meeting me? I could have rented a car.”

A lock of sun-brightened hair fell across his forehead. “That’s a long story. I didn’t know you were coming until six a.m. when my scatterbrain sister called. ‘Alex, I have to work and Lauren’s arriving at ten and could you meet her and I know you’re off so say yes.’”

Lauren laughed. “All without a breath and you agreed.”

He took her arm. His touch, the overheated building, the noisy crowd combined to make her feel faint. She inhaled. A trickle of perfume triggered a cough. She fought to catch her breath. “Let’s get my bag.”

     “Are you home for good?”

How could she tell him she didn’t have a home, just two residences the bank had retained? Would he understand why she had returned to Eastlake? “I don’t know.”

“Why don’t you consider staying in Eastlake? The hospital needs nurses. Have you kept your license?”

“Yes.” She noted the overhead signs pointing to the baggage area and turned to the right. “Lately I haven’t been thinking beyond each day.”

His fingers lightly stroked her jacket sleeve. She wondered if he was aware of the action. The rush of heat she felt in response to his gentleness dissolved the wall holding her pain. In silence she walked beside her.

Once they reached the revolving baggage carrousel for her flight she pointed to the khaki duffel circling with the suitcases. “The duffel’s mine.”

Alex snagged the strap. “Just one.”

She nodded. “I’ve learned to travel light. Not much room in a tent or a hut.”

“What were you doing in a tent?”

“Working for International Health Rescue Missions. Didn’t Megan tell you?”

“Probably. It’s hard finding facts in her chatter.”

They entered the bullet train and exited minutes later at the door leading to the parking lot. The air redolent with exhaust fumes made her choke and cough. Alex opened the car door and slid the duffel in the back.

Tuesday's Writer's Tip Off Center Edings #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #wriring #Endings

When the ending in ineffective, the reader will cast the book aside and thing hoohum. They may or may not read that writer again. How do you know if your ending is off center.

Since the last scene brings the reader to a satisfactory ending this is an important as the beginning. The writer may have changed the focus. The characters that should be there for the ending are present. But the writer has picked the final confrontation between the wrong two characters. The writer forgot which of the characters had the most to gain or lose in that final scene. One of the characters who has the most to win or lose is off being an observer. Not a good idea.

So what to do. Give that person a way to help win or lost the confrontation. That means changing the focus of the scene.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading - Have been spending many days with Brother Cadfael mysteries by Ellis Peters. I read these many years ago during the days when I had four small children to raise and writing was only a dream. I'm learning a lotof interesting things about monasteries and herbs. Hopefully I'll finish the series before long.

Meander 2 _ Thoughts - Had to have my car battery charged again. The young man from AAA was thourough looking at all the things in the strange engine of my 2001 Prius. The car is a gem and keeps running, I hope forever. Then had to spend a half hour letting the car run in the driveway and another half hour riding around. Kept me from writing but that's for another Meander.

Meander 3 -Writing - Working diligently on Committee in the final revision and the typing. I believe there will be some rewriting of scenes when I reach the later chapters. Am making sure the first ones fit the change from amedical suspense to a romantic suspense. I don't think I could write a staight suspense. I thought to try but the plot shouted no so now I plunge forward.
