Seducing the Attorney is featured today as Sunday's Book

Lauren Grant’s first meeting with Tony Carlin happened four years ago at her sister’s wedding to his older brother. There’s been an attraction but a wary one. The handsome arrogant attorney had showed disdain. At that time Lauren had been a troubled teen with streaked hair and piercings. Now, she’s working toward her Master’s in OT and has no time for more than school and her infant nephew. The death of Jamie’s parents has left Tony and Lauren as joint guardians of the baby.

Tony makes assumptions about Lauren’s current life-style. He’s as attracted to her as he was four years ago. But he’s a player and has no thought of making any commitments other than having sole custody of his nephew. He is grieving for his brother. Lauren grieves for her sister and Tony’s brother. A moment of mutual comfort sends them on a spiraling course.

Will they solve the problem of the custody and come to admit their feelings for each other?

Hatchling’s Vengeance

Vengeance has two paths. The cult leader, the Parant, means to have his. No matter how long it takes or how many innocents die, he will kill all dragon shifters. For the last two unattached dragon shifters, their only weapons to save their kind are their swords—and love. Sometimes not even dragon fire and talons are enough to overcome the mind control wielded by the one called—the Parant.

For those who the Parant commands, will vengeance yield to love and provide a path to redemption? Or will retribution decree the punishment for past acts be death?

Dragon shifter and follower alike stand on the knife’s edge with happiness and loss fighting to control the balance.

Helen Henderson is Visiting and Talking bout being a Panster or Plotter. #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor Fantasy #dragons

Panster or Plotter

Day 1

1. Are you a panster or a plotter or perhaps a bit of both?

I would say that I am more of an explorer, which is a combination of plotter and pantser. Each project starts off as a plotter and the creation of a storyboard. The scene notes contains a check-off for the purpose of the scene such as characterization, enhance the setting, or advances the plot. The storyboard is not the numbered structure of a traditional outline. It’s format is bullet points and it contains dialog, setting, and is in essence more a first draft than a true outline. At some point, the characters take over and the plotter submerges beneath the more free-wheeling pantser and the storyboard turns into a second draft.

2. Which comes first - characters or plot for you?

Although I need to know at least some aspect of the main characters, I work the plot first, letting the characters develop as they will.

3. What are you working on now? Is this a book in a current series or something totally new?

The release of Fire and Redemption last month means I am in the middle ground between projects. I had thought a third book to tell the final chapter in Trelleir’s search to find the homeland of his dragon kin was the next logical project. However, a different land has been nagging to be explored. Whether it is a fantasy world or a science fiction exploration, adventure and some amount of romance is promised.

4. Do you have some kind of object or place that figures in most of your books? I use gems a lot, hospitals and caves.

Caves have appeared in all three of my series. The uses varied from travelers’ shelters to an underground temple, a dragon’s lair and hatching cave, and the hiding place of a magical relic. Gems have also made a few appearances, especially in the Tear Stone Collectors. When a dragon cries, their tears fall as precious jewels. Each tear stone is imbued with the magic of its creator. And for special humans, the jewels can enhance the person's natural powers or even provide the ability to take on dragon form. However, I admit to one thing appearing in al the fantasy books – magical breeds of equines. One word of warning, the horses chose their riders. Those who try to get into the saddle when they are not the animal’s chosen one will measure their length in the dirt.

5. Do you write every day or just when the spirit hits?

I would like to say I write every day. And for a good number of years I did. Now, even though I am no longer a full-time caretaker, life and age get in the way My resolution this year was to write every day even if it is a blog post, a hop, or a writing prompt challenge.

6. Where can we find you?

Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/HelenHenderson.author/

Goodreads – http://bit.ly/1eWhhGB

Twitter –https://twitter.com/history2write

7. Who are your favorite authors? What about a book you’ve enjoyed?

Over the years I have devoured Kathrine Kurtz’s Adept series, and have gone through phases where I read adventures written by Leslie Charteris, the 007 books by Ian Fleming, and westerns by Louis L'amour. Then throw in some science fiction by Asimov to round out the genres. But the number one favorite author is the queen of Dragonhold, Anne McCaffrey. In addition to riding a dragon, you can explore outer space and encounter strange creatures in the Talent Universe series.

SATURDAY, MAY 4, 2024

Pia Manning is visiting and talking about Who She Was Before #MFRWAuthor #Event planner, #contemporary small town #romance #Star Brides

1. What were you before you became an author? Did this influence your choices as a writer?

I was many things before I started writing – we moved around quite a bit, and that necessitated career changes. I worked as an event planner for a hotel and conference center, supervised operations for a couple of banks, taught pre-K (four-year-olds could rule the world!), and was the community development coordinator for a large medical system’s hospice affiliate. Whew!

Making up stuff for a living tugged at me – always. But adding four kids to the mix, all the moves as well as career changes made doing that almost impossible. It wasn’t until a kind guy in a white coat informed me I was medically unable to continue working in a traditional way, that I was able to write.

Over the years there have been a lot of people, towns, and jobs. I’m sure they influence my world view just as anyone’s life experiences do – but there’s not one specific thing that stands out. Rather all the years have come together to form a rich tapestry. Every so often I walk through those memories when I need inspiration.

2. Are you genre specific or general? I don’t mean major genres but subdivisions or romance, mystery or paranormal.

These days I write more contemporary small-town romances (the where-I’m-at-today factor) set in the Northwoods territory of Wisconsin. I find plenty of inspiration in the rich tableau of characters, settings and situations that are found here..

I also love creating new worlds, hence the creation of the Star Brides universe of futuristic sci-fi romances. There’s something freeing when writing about the future because there are no known rules or societal expectations to observe. There’s no historical commonality to weigh me down. It’s exciting as a writer because I can let my imagination fly freely in the atmospheres.

3. What is your latest release?

Hometown Spirits Caveman Creek 4 is my newest. As with my other books in the Caveman Creek series, it’s an erotic romance that’s set in the beautiful little town of Pinecone Creek, Wisconsin.

4. What are you working on now?

Cleaning my house, lol! Seriously, I have plans for Caveman Creek 5, tentatively titled ‘Daddy’s Home.’ My website desperately needs some updating, so that’s on the list as well.

5. Does your reading choices influence your choice of a writing career?

Kinda sorta, but not always. How’s that for a definite answer?  I do read a great deal of romances books: contemporary, menage, sci-fi, paranormal, etc. While I enjoy feasting at the literary banquet available, I don’t necessarily write in those imprints.

I also read horror, crime/mystery, dystopian, sci fi, paranormal etc, but I don’t necessarily write in those genres.

6. Where can we find you?

If you’d like to just chat, my email is best: https://www.pia.manning@yahoo.com  NOTE: I don’t have a newsletter, I’m not collecting emails. That said, if you do email me and want me to answer, then yes, I’ll need your email.

Seducing the Innkeeper is featured on Opening Scene Thursday #MFRWAuthor #BWLAuthor #romance #spicy #Vermont #Son not known about

Chapter One

Christa Sommers counted the receipts for the restaurant and the bar of Green Mountain Inn. She rubbed her forehead and stared at the totals. As she matched the copies of the bills with the cash and credit card slips she clenched her teeth. Someone had slipped with a heavy hand into the cash and she knew the identity of the culprit or culprits. A hundred dollars short. Last week the shortage had been nearly four hundred.

She reached for the stack of just paid bills. For the fourth month she had to use money from the room rentals to cover the bar and restaurant expenses. Her stomach roiled. The time had come to inform the thieves and ignore the guilt trip they would attempt to use again. This time she wouldn’t cave. She might even call the police. But they were family and she had very few relatives.

“Mom, when are we leaving?”

Christa smiled at her son. “Give me ten minutes.” She tousled Davy’s blonde hair and felt a pang of regret. He looked so much like the father he didn’t know.

Do not walk that road. She had no time for regrets. She wrote the last check and sealed the envelope. After putting the money and credit card slips in a deposit bag she reached for her jacket.

Before she and Davy reached the office door her half-sisters barged into the room. She looked at her son.  He didn’t need to hear another quarrel with the pair. “Davy, wait for me outside.”

He glared at the two young women. “Okay.”

Christa cleared her throat. “Just what is your problem today?” She waited for one of them to speak.

“You have to look at this brochure.” Peggy waved a paper. “This is absolutely what Stel and I need to survive boredom. The guests who stay here are old.”

“We need to have some fun,” Stella added. “Meet young and very eligible guys.”

“No cruise.” Christa noted the prices. “This is out of the question.” Though the guests who come to view the fall foliage were older they were little problem. “I’m no longer paying for your fun and games.”

“Why not?” Stella fisted her hands on her hips. “You owe us. Remember where you were when Mom and Dad died. We were left alone and ended in that place for six weeks.”

Christa swallowed. She wouldn’t bite this time “I said so. You need to find jobs.”

“We have them here,” Peggy said.

Stella sneered. “Right. Steering old people to tables and running the cash drawer. Getting paid pennies. All we need is a few thou.”

Christa shook her head. “Not possible. We need to discuss the money that’s missing from the restaurant and bar registers. There are discrepancies.”

Peggy stepped closer. “If people didn’t use credit cards we could have all we want.”

Stella nodded. “She’s right. We just need a vacation. A singles’ cruise is perfect. We might find the right men.”

Christa remembered the bills from the vacation the pair had taken in June to celebrate Peggy’s college graduation. And the problems presented by the two men who had followed them to the inn hoping to share the bounty. At twenty-two and twenty-three her half sisters were selfish and self-centered. When would they stop blaming her for an accident that hadn’t been her fault? She had been out of touch when they’d needed her. The single time had happened years ago. The time had come for them to be responsible for their own lives.

Peggy planted her hands on the desk. “Why do we always have to fight for our share of the inn’s profits?”

Christa drew a deep breath. “You have no share.”

“So you say.” Stella glared. “On Monday we’re calling a lawyer.”

“Go ahead. Do that instead of taking the path you need to find jobs.” There she’d said what she’d avoided since Peggy had graduated in June.

“What are you talking about?” Stella’s voice rose to a strident pitch. “We own more of this dump than you. Mom said no matter what happened to Dad we were set for life.”

“She lied.” Christa knew her father had told his second wife lies about the ownership of the inn. Until his death he’d been her guardian with no more than a life tenancy. After his death she’d learned her mother had left the inn to her. “You also need to know the inn is for sale.”

“You can’t do that,” Peggy said.

“We won’t sign,” Stella added.

“Your signatures aren’t needed. Now hear this.” Before she could tell them her next part of the offer the pair stomped away.

Christa slumped in a chair. Their anger and the thefts weren’t her fault except she had allowed the pilfering to continue all summer. She had meant to tell them the moment Peggy had graduated from college. As usual she had tabled the confrontation. No longer. They had to learn their free-loading days had ended.

“Mom, when are we going?”

“Now.” She grabbed the stack of envelopes and the deposit bag and followed her son to the Jeep. A grin turned her lips upward. She had finally grown a spine. The trick was finding a way to keep the bones firmly in place.

Excerpt

Bran followed her into the alley. A pair of scruffy boys held a child. One slapped her. When Ky yelled a second time, the ruffians dropped the child and ran. Ky chased after them.

“Come back and help me.” Bran knelt beside the little girl. Her face was bloody. One arm was twisted. He found a gash on her leg that bled with a steady flow. He applied pressure to the area. “Ky, can you send fire through my hands. I need to stop the bleeding.” She put her hands over his. He felt warmth and then heat. He removed his hands and sighed when the bleeding didn’t begin anew.

“What do we do now?” Ky asked. “We can’t leave her here. We need to take care of her. Carry the basket and I’ll bring her.” “What will Ash say?”

He looked up. “Won’t matter. I can’t leave this child in this alley. We’ve no idea where she lives.” Ky helped him stand. He tightened his hold on the small girl and made his way around the debris littering the ground. Ky ran ahead and opened the gate. Once inside, he strode to the house.

What will you need?” Ky asked.

“Water to clean the wounds and for a tea.”

“I’ll get it.” She opened the door and set the basket down.

Bran carried the child to where their sleep sacques lay. He placed her on his and dropped his backpack to the floor beside his poncho.

“What have you done?” Ash asked.

Bran rose and went for the pack of herbs. “Found her. Two ruffians attacked the child. Ky and I chased them away.”

 “Why bring her here?”

“Where else could I take her?”
