Friday Joanie MacNeil is Visiting and talking about a Featured Book #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #romance #Honorable Men #Australia

 1.      Tell me about your latest release or the book you wish to feature? Genre?

His Secret Promise - Book 3 in the Honorable Men series - is my tenth published novel, and my first brand new novel in some time. Unlike the first two books in the series,  this story is set on the Sapphire Coast, south of Sydney, Australia.

2.      Where did the idea arise?

Too many years ago, I had the idea to write a story of a soldier wishing to reconnect with his life in Australia following his tour of Afghanistan. While including some of his personal battles and how he dealt with them, I focused more on the romance rather than the trauma of his situation. My heroine was also dealing with a personal trauma of her own.

3.      How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

I found some old newspapers which contained heart-wrenching stories of incidents where soldiers lost their mates. These gave me an insight into their emotions and what life was like for them on their return to civilian life. I was browsing through a bookshop and found a coffee table book with a range of photos taken in Afghanistan, and these helped with the scenic settings.

4.      How long did you take to write the book?

Too long, unfortunately. It wasn’t an easy story to write, especially as I wanted to find the right balance of emotions in the telling. I had a good idea of the hero, but had to work at creating a suitable heroine who didn’t come across as being too weak. Once I realized that, she became a little easier to work with.

5.      Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?

I began writing in the mid-1990s. My first book was e-published on a floppy disc early in 1999, when e-publishing was a fledgling industry. Look how far it’s come! I had more books published in the following years, but lost my way with my writing career for about ten years, though never wanted to let it go. Must have been my stubborn streak. I’d always anticipated I’d be back. In August 2014, Books We Love published two of my previously published novels, No Boundaries and December Heat Wave.

A Traditional Affair and A Sense of Duty are the last of my earlier novels now published by BWL Publishing Inc. These are the first two novels in my Honorable Men series, and are set in Scotland.

My Sun Sign is Cancer. My birthday is 22 July, so depending on which horoscope I read, I may be a Leo. I usually read both horoscopes, out of curiosity. There are occasions when one seems closer to what’s happening in my life  than the other…or neither are at all relevant. I did read my horoscope years ago after a major upheaval in my life. I couldn’t believe how much it related to me.

6.      Do you write in a number of genres or stick to one?

Contemporary romance is my favorite genre to write. I’ve written a few novellas/short stories in this genre as well as my novels, plus one short story leaning towards science fiction. That was fun to write.

Divided Dreams #MFRWHooks #BWLAuthor #romance #Contemporary #shared custody

Join the authors at #MFRWHooks here http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com for some interesting excerpts. Mine is from Divided Dreams found at eclecticwriter.blogspot.com  A contemporary romance

Blurb:

Rob Grantlan has given up medicine to become an author. As a Gemini, having two careers seems just right. His quiet days are overturned by the death of his wayward sister and his taking guardianship of his two month old niece. When he learns the father of the infant is his old flame Andi Sherman’s brother a plan unfolds. Years ago, he hurt her. He still loves her and he wants to regenerate that love. Andi Sherman is now a nurse practitioner in Pediatrics. She has vowed never to return to Fern Lake. The offer of a partnership in a friend’s practice is tempting. She refuses until she learns Rob has given up the practice of medicine. She believes he will leave town. On the day after her July birthday, she returns and comes upon the accident, finds the dying woman and the baby. When she learns the little girl is her niece and Rob hasn’t left town she is conflicted. She still loves him but she can’t trust him. News from her brother brings a threat. Will Tammy’s presence in their lives find a way to allow them to love and trust again?

Excerpt:

You can’t go home again. Andi Sherman repeated the words she’d said hundreds of times. Yet, here she was on the road to Fern Lake.

Her stomach roiled. As the car sped along the highway leading to the town she’d left eleven years ago, she gripped the steering wheel. She gulped a breath. Yesterday she’d celebrated her twenty-ninth birthday and she still yearned for a faded dream.

She spotted the sign for County Road 178. On an impulse she turned. Fifteen or twenty minutes, instead of ten, would see her in her old home town.

The July sun shone bright in a near cloudless sky. A few wispy clouds called ‘mares’ tails’ streaked the brilliant blue. She rolled down the window and inhaled the scents of summer, dust, wild roses, mown hay and other aromas different from those of the city. The winding road would take her past the house where she’d spent her childhood, a house that no longer existed. The property, lost to greed, slovenliness and criminal activities, had been taken for back taxes. She had escaped long before that day.

Dead. All her family members, except a younger brother, had died when the meth lab burned like an inferno. Dan Sherman, two years her junior, hadn’t been home the day of the disaster. Neither had she, but she’d seen pictures of the fire on television.

Andi sighed. The day she’d graduated from high school she’d left Fern Lake to begin a slow climb to success. She knew nothing about her brother’s whereabouts and she had no desire to learn.

Pressing her foot to the gas she sped past haunted memories and focused on the future. Now a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, she was on her way to join two doctors who had offered her a partnership in their practice.

Her thoughts drifted to her new partners. Josh had settled in Fern Lake five years ago. Grace joined him two years later. Andi had always wondered why they hadn’t become a couple. They liked the same food, movies and books. Maybe she would find a way to open Josh’s eyes to the possibilities.

What about you?

She shook her head. She had a new career to explore. Eleven years ago she hadn’t dreamed of returning to Fern Lake as a nurse practitioner or for any other reason. Her journey had taken hard work and intense study. From nursing assistant to practical nurse to an RN, bachelor’s degree and finally to her Master’s. All this had left her with little time for herself.

The busy days had kept at bay memories of the boy who had hurt and rejected her. Only after hearing Rob Grantlan planned to sell the nursing home/rehabilitation center his father had built for him had she considered returning. The news he’d given up his medical practice had allowed her to accept her friends’ offer.

As she struggled to banish thoughts of him her knuckles whitened. Her chest ached. A rush of tears blurred her vision. She had no time for remembrances of lost dreams shattered like crystal spheres beneath battering words. She recalled the day she realized he’d never loved her and had used her for his pleasure remained strong.

Tuesday's Writer's Tip Tension and Plot #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #writing #tension #plot

There are stories that tell a tale but without tension, they can fall flat. Tension is the first thing to turn a story into a plotted tale. Without tension what youhave is flat. Boy meets girl. Boy asks girl to marry him. Girl says yes or no. The story ends there. But put in a simple but of tension and the story takes shape. Perhaps she says yew but her father or guardian is absolutely against the marriage. This bit of tension adds and makes a plotted story. If she says no, immediately the reader asks why. What does he do then. He needs to find a way to persuade her to marry him. That means change and change makes the story.

Tension can add spice to any story. This captures the readers tension. What I've talked about here is a simple addition to the story bringing questiosn that must be answered. Adding an element of tension to any simple story and you are beginning to develop a plot or a road map to the end. Other ways to add tension to story will be looked at later.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #reading #writing #thoughts

Meander 1 Reading - Back to reading Jo Beverley's Regency series and am enjoying meeting old friends again. Though set in the same world the books aren't copies of each other but each is unique. I like that.

Meander 2 Thoughts - There's a movement going on to ban books and I find that distasteful. Where would we be if there wasn't reading and writing of books. I've been  a reader since the age of three. Fortunately I was born to parents who never tried to censer my reading. This came to a head when in third grade, I wrote a book report on Anna Karenina and the teacher flippedout. My father said if I could read the words and understand what I was reading, I could read what I wanted. I was really upset when I learned they were banning Toni Morrison - a Nobelist and winer of amny awards. Why? I have no problem with parents who don't want their children to read certain books. Though I feel they are foolish, this is their right. But that's no reason to remove the books from the library. Doing banning also means we want the world to have ignorant people. Reading gives a view of other world and cultures. So if you're one of the book banning people keep your hands off the library. Forbid your children from reading the books you want them not to read and let those who enjoy exploring different worlds alone.

Meander 3 Writing - Am coming to the end of the massive rewrites on my current WIP. Then it will be onto the revision and checking up what I've written to make sure it makes sense. November moves ever closer.

Friday Some Medical focused stories not part of a series. #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Medical #romance #not series

The article passed around the table on a hot August night. “Five to ten percent of the nation’s doctors are so impaired or incompetent they cannot or should not practice medicine.” The nurses at Bradley Memorial thought they had them all. That night they formed a group they called The Committee of Angels.

Nearly a year has passed and Laura Bancroft wonders why little has been done to change things. She also wonders about some of the nurses fitting the pattern. Laura has three doctors on her list of incompetents. She seldom meets with the other members and several of the others are upset with her. When her ex-husband joins the medical staff, she realizes she still has feelings for him. One of her list of doctors dies after emergency surgery and Laura finds her suspected since she was assigned to the doctor. She must deal with suspicions, her feelings for her ex. Then a second on her list commits suicide and speaks of blackmail.

Can Laura learn the truth of who is responsible before she faces arrest?

Rekindled Dreams #MFRWHooks #BWLAuthor #Romance #Second chance

Join the authors at #MFRWHooks here http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com for some great excerpts  Rekindled Dreams found at https://wwweclecticwriter.blogspot.com  is a second chance at love story

Blurb:

Returning to Fern Lake after ten years for the funeral of his cousin and teenage enemy, Simon Parker learns his high school sweetheart is nine months pregnant and seven months divorced from his cousin. Their meeting is complicated by her labor and driving her to the hospital. An attempted cheek kiss lands on her mouth and those old feelings resurface. Dana Collins responds to the kiss but Simon walked away ten years before when she refused to go all the way. In those ten years he has never tried to reach her. Her marriage to his cousin lasted less than two years and she knew she’d made a mistake. Can this pair put the past aside and let the embers of an old love be rekindled?

Excerpt:

“Asshole.” Pressing his hands against the metal desk, Simon Parker glared at the head of the Narcotic’s Division. His teeth clenched. He would not lose his temper and shout the words circling like poison darts in his thoughts.

His left leg tensed. The quads tightened. Though the wound had healed, the agony of the day the bullet tore into his flesh returned with a roar. An image of his dead partner’s blank eyes fueled his anger. Only a few threads of sanity kept him from erupting in an action he would regret. At the moment, his single desire was slamming his fist into the sorry bastard’s face.

Captain Paley half rose from his chair. “I’ll ignore that comment.”

“I’d rather you didn’t.” A burn seared Simon’s gut.

“You’re still under my command and you’ll do what I order.”

“I don’t think so.”

Paley grasped the edge of his desk. “You’re cleared for duty. You’re going undercover with the Garsis’ gang.”

“Not going to happen.” Simon pulled two envelopes from the pocket of his windbreaker.

“You’ll do as ordered.”

“This isn’t the army.” Simon drew a deep breath that did nothing to calm his temper. I asked for a transfer to any division or precinct. I would even go back to walking a beat. Anywhere but Narcotics.”

“Your transfer was denied,” Paley said.

“Where’s the letter?”

“You’re needed here. Your experience is valuable. Just shove your hissy fit in a drawer and follow orders.”

Simon dropped his badge and gun on the desk. More of his control frayed. He didn’t care that the office door was open and every ear in the outer room was tuned to the discussion in here. He wanted out before his temper erupted.

Drawing a deep breath he held his fists at his side. “I won’t work another day for an asshole.” He stabbed the envelopes with a finger. “My resignation is effective immediately. Here is a copy of my request for a transfer. You can’t bury them in your files this time. Copies have been sent to everyone I could think of.” He whirled and strode to the door.

“Parker, get back here.” Paley’s voice reached a level even the dead could hear. “We’re not finished.”

“I am.”

“Just listen to me. Pull off this job and you’ll be golden.”

Simon stomped to the door. “Too late. I quit. I’m done. I’m out of here.” Could he make his decision any clearer?

“I’ll recommend you for a promotion.”

“Not going to bite your carrot.” The words he’d held back seeped closer to an eruption. He nearly turned to blast the man and halted the action. No sense being arrested for assault. Cops fared poorly in prison.

“Why walk out?” The shouted question reached Simon. “Give me a good reason.”

“To save my life. Not gonna let you or anyone put me on a slab.” He slammed the door to Paley’s office and stomped into the outer room. Anger snapped the last thread restraining his temper. If he’d had his gun he would have shot the bastard.

The desks in the outer office were mainly empty. The few men and women present pretended to be busy. His glare must have warned them not to poke.

Tuesday's Writer's Tip - A Bit about Beginning, Middle and End #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #writing

When writing a story, do you need to know the ending when you write the beginning? Not completely but you will need to know which of the characters will reach his or her goal This fives the viewpoint to the story. So let's look generally at the three parts of a story.

The beginning should tell youwhat kind of story you are telling be it romance, mystery or one of the other genres. In the beginning the characters are introduced along with the goals of these characters. Who are they and what do they want? Also there should be a hint to why each one wants a special outcome.

In the middle, the characters approach their goals. They face problems about reaching their main goal. Small problems can be silved but always there's the driving force toward that goal. During this part of the story, there can be points where the characters may make a reversalBut pointing them back to the goal helps. Try to avoid having a character step in and solve everything. Miracles may happen but this usually causes the story to fall flat.

The end must be the logical outcome of what is shown in the beginning and the middle. This is the conclusion of the action and the promise of a satisfactory ending.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #reading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1  - Reading - Still working of rereading Jo Beverley's regency series. Will start reading other books soon. Have begun Murder Exit Left and will finish it before the week is over and other BWL stories

Meander 2 - Thoughts - We are coming to the most important election of our country. There are issues that will drive the election. For me some are important andothers not. The naughts include the denial of the last election and things like getting rid of social security, cutting medicare and such mean desires of some politicians. The meaningful ones to me are the Row vs Wade decision, the lies sworn to by some of the justices of the Supreme Court, the survival of democracy and the need to punish those who tried to take over the country. I will vote and pray my vote counts.

Mender 3 Writing - Nearing the end of the rewrite of Seppal and then there will only be the final draft to accomplish.

Blurb and Buy Links – The Last Dragon

What do dragons, knights and romance have in common? Grab a copy of multi-published author Daryl Devore’s medieval fantasy romance – The Last Dragon and discover the answer.

A sorcerer craving dominance merged with a dragon, the power overwhelmed him causing him to split into three dragons. Demora ruled thought, but was lost in time. Yidithe offered protection, shining like the light of the sun. Ayrradex craved chaos, revelling in destroying souls.

Many knights died, attempting to slay the devil beast. One knight, Prince Hawkyns, did not fear death. He’d lost everything. Away on a mission when Ayrradex attacked his fathers kingdom, Penrythe, Hawkyns returned to find his noble father – feeble and defeated. His wise mother – crazed. His beautiful wife and unborn child - dead. Only a pile of ashes remained for him to bury. He knelt before his King and vowed to slay the devil-beast or be slain.

Derry was born with powers that terrified her parents. They delivered her to a nunnery to be raised in secret. Jathe, a wise sorceress, discovered the young girl and trained her to one day use the secret hidden in her soul.

Legends spoken around campfires hinted the sole way to destroy Ayrradex was when the hearts of a knight and a golden dragon became one. But after a vicious battle with Ayrradex, the golden dragon was thought to be dead.

Can Prince Hawkyns’s bravery and Derry’s powers end the reign of the devil-beast’s terror?

1.   Tell me about your latest release or the book you wish to feature? Genre?

My latest release – which is something like book 19 – is a contemporary dancer romance – Circles Interlocked. It is the sequel to NA contemporary dancer romance – Dancing in Circles.

2.   Where did the idea arise?

The end of Dancing in Circles demanded a continuation of the story. The ages of the characters went from late teens/early 20s to late 20s – so the genre left NA and moved to contemporary. The first book – Dancing in Circles – came about when 2 of my students complained there was nothing to read. So, I wrote that book designed for them, and this is the rest of the story.

3.   How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

Research was ongoing for this as I was teaching senior level high school as I was writing the book. I watched my students and listened to them and based by characters on them. The MC – Robert – is actually someone from my high school when I was a student.

4.   How long did you take to write the book?

Sorry, I don’t remember. It was a few years ago. The book was published under my other pen name, so this is a re-release. I’m getting all my works under one pen name.

5.   Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?

Sagittarius - <Independent and strong-willed, Sagittarius personalities are all about going off the beaten path. Sagittarius isn’t afraid to step away from the pack, and is a natural born leader who goes after what he or she wants, regardless of what other people think.> https://www.horoscope.com/zodiac-signs/sagittarius

That describes me pretty well. I never fit in with crowds at school. I did what I wanted to do and everyone could just deal or ignore me. Part of my independence comes from being an only child.

I started writing when I was in high school, taking a creative writing class. I loved being assigned essays because I got to write. The ability to put words on paper helped me through a couple of university exams where I really stretched the answer.

6. Do you write in a number of genres of stick to one?

Part of that Sagittarian independence shows up in my writing. I write what my muse suggests. Authors get told – stick to 1 genre. Your readers expect it and get annoyed when you write something else.

Nope – isn’t going to happen. I have written hot romances – billionaire, twisted fairy tale, medieval. I have written sweet romances – contemporary, sports and a quirky mystery. Currently, I am loving sweet medieval fantasy. When I am done with that, who knows what genre I’ll try.

I see my switching genres as - instead of losing readers, I pick them up with my different types of stories and heat levels. And – more importantly, I am not confined to 1 genre. Sagittarians don’t do well when somebody tries to put them in a box.

I no longer have a newsletter. LOL – imagine – a Sagittarian moving away from the crowd. I created an author group. One is on FB and the other on MeWe. Since some people have moved away from FB, I didn’t want to lose them as group members. I think of the 2 groups as 1, so it doesn’t matter which group you join. Lots of benefits from joining – including a free ebook and my eternal gratitude.
