Tuesday's Writer's Tip - Using Melodrama #MFRWAuthor #BWLAuthor #amwriting #melodrama

Just what is melodrama. When I hear that mentioned, I always think of the old scene "You must pay the rent." I can't pay the rent." This is repeated several times when in comes the here with "I'll pay the rent." So just what is melodrama? Something bigger than the ordinary life.

Melodrama is really that punch that hits a story and maakes it larger than ordinary. Melodrama is a way of hwowing reality be focusing on shock value. Using melodrama means showing events in a colorful way rather than being mundans. This took of writing brings the reader into the event and arousing their sympathies.Melodrama removes the trivial details and hits the story with an emotional punch,

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading - Mostly read Mercedes Lackey's The last Herald Mage. But also took time out to read Ghost Point byDiane Scott Lewis - an intricately woven story about the Oyster Wars between Maryland and Virginia. A story of the 1950's with all the things I remember about those times.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - A dilemma. Whent to print out a chapter of a book I started eyars ago and put aside and discovered no ink in the printer. So I looked at the three containers I had nd found they were all tri-colored. No more printing yesterday, so This morning I headed to Staples to buy one though I had ordered some online but no delivery until Tuesday. Got the cartridge and am  happily printing.

Meander 3 - Writing - Finished the last of the rewrite drafts of Incal. Now it's time to finish typing the chapters in so I can do the draft where I make all pretty and make sure there are no scenes to rewrite. Then it will be on to the next book.

Friday Augustina Van Hoven is visiting and talking about being Panster or Plotter #MFRWAuthor #Panster #Plotter #Paranormal #Time

1. Are you a panster or a plotter or perhaps a bit of both?

I am definitely a plotter.  The first thing I do when I begin a new story is create an outline. This gives me the road map I need to write the book. I can write a lot faster if I know where I’m going and what needs to happen in a chapter.

2. Which comes first - characters or plot for you?

The first thing for me is the plot.  I begin with a “what if question” and get the basic idea of the story.  Once I know where the story begins and how it ends, I list all the people that live in this world and develop them.

3. What are you working on now? Is this a book in a current series or something totally new?

I’m currently finishing my first novella in a new series.  I love ghost stories and the supernatural.  I have created a new series that will release each year before Halloween. The genre is supernatural suspense. I have named this The Eldritch Series. The title of the first book is Harbinger.

4. Do you have some kind of object or place that figures in most of your books? I use gems a lot, hospitals and caves.

Most of my books have something to do with time. There is either time travel or stories set in the future or the past. History fascinates me and I enjoy researching it for my different books.

5. Do you write every day or just when the spirit hits?

I write every day. I have a minimum word count and I can’t go to bed until I reach it.

6. Where can we find you?

You can find me in the following places:

Bookbub page: https://www.bookbub.com/authors/augustina-van-hoven

7. Who are your favorite authors? What about a book you’ve enjoyed?

My favorite author is JRR Tolkien.  I read The Hobbit when I was eleven years old and Lord of the Rings when I was twelve. These two books have greatly influenced my writing. I love fantasy, supernatural and science fiction. All of my stories have different elements of those things in them.

Thursday's Opening Scene - Code Blue #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Suspense #Medical

He crouched in the cemetery that embraced three sides of the hillside parking lot across from Bradley Memorial Hospital. A massive family marker shielded him yet allowed him a clear view of the steps, the street and the door of the Emergency Room. Dark clouds slid across the surface of the moon. Lights, set high on poles around the perimeter of the lot sent finger shadows groping among the cars.

The watcher straightened and edged from behind the granite marker. White puffs of vapor from the shallow, rapid breaths he took coalesced around his face. He held his body as rigid as a tombstone. As he waited for the evening nurses to end their tour of duty and hurry across the street to their cars, his narrowed eyes focused on the brightly-lit hospital entrance. Every night for a week, he had watched while excitement and anticipation had circled like a swarm of hornets. Would she come tonight?

"I'll never leave you." When he was eight, Mommy had said the words that had become his litany. That broken promise had brought him here.

He stared at the steps. When would Susan come?

When Mommy was a patient, Susan had been her favorite nurse. He had liked Susan, too, but she hadn't stopped those other people from hurting Mommy. His shoulders tensed.

"I'll never leave you. They'll have to kill me first."

The night Mommy died was etched into his memories. On that dreadful night, he had begun his plan to make them pay.

Mommy would be unhappy about what he meant to do. To her, nurses were special and Susan more wonderful than the rest.

He rocked from his heels to his toes. The last time he had disobeyed, Mommy had threatened to tell everyone how bad he was. He had promised her he would be good. His hands curled into fists. Sometimes he wanted to feel the heat of accomplishment so much he felt sick.

He gulped a breath. Tonight the heat would blossom and he would feel powerful again.

Susan was like Mommy. She would tell. He chewed on his lower lip. Her death would free him to still the people who had hurt Mommy on that dreadful night.

His smile became a grimace.

He had trusted Susan but she had failed to keep Mommy safe. Though he wished to see the others dead, Susan had to be first. He had laid his plans carefully, and while he had considered all the things that could go wrong, days had become weeks and then months.

The bright lights across the street caught his attention and stirred his hopes. She had to come tonight. He wanted to be free.

His hand brushed Mommy's tombstone. He pressed his fingers against the engraved letters of her name. He cocked his head and listened to the whisper of the wind.

"Nurses give so much to others. Someone should take care of them."

Mommy's husky voice thrummed in a corner of his mind. Her face appeared. Tears spilled from her eyes. He shook his head. Why should he listen to her when she had left him?

Sometimes at night when he slept in her bed, he caught a glimmer of her presence. For fleeting moments, the scent of her perfume brought her to him.

He squared his shoulders. Since he was eight and Daddy died, Mommy had watched him carefully. One day, her vigilance had wavered. The neighborhood bully had fallen from a tree and broken his neck. That awful boy shouldn't have torn up Mommy's flower garden.

Mommy had liked the candy and the other presents he had given her every time he disobeyed. He groaned. Who would like his presents now?

Where was Susan? Waiting made him anxious. She had to come so she would be just like Mommy.

He saw her. Hazel eyes, sad eyes, Susan's eyes, Mommy's eyes. Brown hair swirled to hide her siren smile. He reached for her, but she vanished into the darkness of the night.

The chill November wind flowed across his nape. He jammed his hands into the pockets of his black leather jacket and touched the weapon he had brought.

The sound of leather scuffling against asphalt caused him to turn and scan the parking lot. When he saw no one, his gaze returned to the hospital entrance.

Someone dashed across the street. A flash of white showed beneath the woman's dark coat. He held his breath. Susan had come. It had to be her. A rush of anticipation built to a peak. She was here. The nurse ran up the steps beside the cemetery.

A darting shadow startled him. With stealthy movements, a dark-clad figure edged between the cars. The nurse paused beside a battered tan sedan. A hand stretched to grasp the purse that dangled from her shoulder.

"Susan, watch out." A bellow proclaimed his rage. If she was attacked, he should be the attacker.

Mommy wouldn't like that. "A good boy never hurts a woman." She had never guessed what he had done, not even when he had given her the tri-colored bracelet she had always worn.

"No," he shouted.

The dark figure fled and nearly tripped over the single strand of chain that separated the parking lot from the cemetery.

The watcher smiled. Mommy would be proud of him. He couldn't wait to go home and tell her what he had done tonight.

A shrill scream rose. From her? From him? He bit his lower lip and clenched his hands. He stared at the woman he had thought was Susan. She wasn't, but she had been in Mommy's room the night she died. Intent on completing what the mugger had begun, he stepped toward the chain. What was he thinking about? He couldn't, not tonight. Susan had to be the first. He returned to Mommy's grave. Her voice rode on the wind.

"What will become of you when I'm not here to look after you? I'll never leave you. They'll have to kill me first."

But she was dead and they had killed her.

"Mommy, don't leave me. You promised you would never go."

The nurse ran to the steps. She shouted and waved to the group of women who hurried across the street. He slid deeper into the shadows. Car doors slammed. Engines roared. He waited until most of the cars had left the parking lot before he went to his own. As he drove home, he wondered why Susan hadn't come.

Wednesday Temple of Fyre #MFRWHooks #BWLAuthor #Fantasy #Romance #Gems

Join the authors at #MFRWHooks here  http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com  for some great excerpts. Mine is from Temple of Fyre She learns the truth and is banished from the temple

BLURB:

Sold by her family to the priestesses of the Temple of Fyre, Ria soon masters using each of the four fyrestones, white, yellow, orange and scarlet. Her curiosity leads her to the archives and there, she learns things that disturb her. There are no men serving as priests but in the past there were. Men are kept in the harras where the priestesses visit. On the day of her testing she is ordered to perform a task she dislikes and refuses to destroy a town. Many of the priestesses fall into unconsciousness. Melera, the chief priestess, beats and banishes Ria for the carrion crows to consume. Ari was abandoned as a child and found by two elderly firestone miners. He has pursued this and is the best of the finders. He goes to the temple to sell the stones he has gleaned. On leaving, Ria attempts to steal the fyrestone he has worn since the day he was found. He thinks she is a boy and a thief and he takes her to his room at the inn. On discovering her identity, he refuses to turn her over to the priestesses and they leave town. They are searching for the fabled blue fyrestones. They also learn to use them they must be bonded physically, emotionally and spiritually. Can they learn to master the blue stones and defeat Malera so they can rule the temple with love and understanding?

EXCERPT:

The stone seeker reached the market square where people thronged. She tried to keep pace with him while skirting the clusters of people who moved in erratic patterns. Her body ached. She felt as if the flames she had called were lodged beneath her skin.

The babble of voices and the shifting patterns of the brightly colored clothes made her dizzy. She gulped deep breaths laden with perfumes and spices. She halted and frantically scanned the crowd. Her quarry had vanished. A sense of desperation filled her. She had to find him and the fyrestone he carried.

A tremor spread along her body. She shook. She fisted her hands and fought the darkness threatening to swallow her. She couldn’t succumb to the convulsions that occurred when a priestess lost her crystal. For some, death occurred.

When she saw the stone seeker near a seller of ale, she nearly collapsed as relief swept through her body. He drank the liquid in several gulps. She tried to swallow, but her mouth and throat were dry. Hunger pangs stabbed her gut. The sun slid over the horizon and the sky grayed. Men with long sticks lit the torches near the stalls and around the periphery of the square.

Ria pulled a small knife from the sleeve pocket of her tattered caftan. Had the blade been a gift? Did the acolyte know she had dropped it? ‘Twould serve now. Ria crept toward the stone seeker. Surely the fyrestone was in the pouch with the coins. She didn’t care about the money, just the crystal. She had called fire from a scarlet. To be without a stone could mean her death and she was determined to live.

He headed toward a lane where a number of inns and pleasure houses stood. Once he left the square, her chance to steal the stone and vanish into the milling crowd lessened. She moved closer, reached for the pouch and slashed. He wheeled and grabbed her arm.

“A thief.” He glared. “Who beat you, boy? Is your master heartless?”

How would he act when he learned she was a woman? Ria stared at the ground. Her legs trembled. How could she answer? If he learned her identity, he would take her to Malera.

“Nothing to say? Shall I call the alders?”

She shook her head. “No, please.” Fear caused her voice to crack. If he brought her before the hamlet leaders, she would be sent to one of the pleasure houses to earn her fine. Unless she was recognized and returned to the temple.

Fear, fever, and hunger joined. Her body shook. His face blurred and she collapsed.

Tuesday's Writer's Tip - After the Big Scene #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Writing #Scene

You've reached the end of the big scene but this is nor where the book ends. This has only added another complication to the story. The major character has either won or lost but you wonder what comes now. Something has changed by this scene and you need to incorporate the change in what follows in the story. Mattere can't go on as they have before. Early in your story is a big scene known as the meet. In romance this is when the hero and the heroine meet. In a mystery it's about the heor and the villain. What happens in this scene will make changes in the story and in the way the characters act and react. So youmust make sure the change happens and the story takes a turn.

Look at what's at stake. Now this doesn't have to be a matter of life or death but it does have to be something of importance to the characters in the story. The young girl who yearns for a particular dress can be for her of vital importance. Whatever the stakes in the story, theymust be vital to the character to either win or lose. So keep this in mind as you write and depart each big scene in the story.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 Reading - Back to Vladmere and Mercedes Lackey's tales of a fantastic land. Enjoying rereading books I haven't read for years.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - Daughter is home from the hospital. She still has oxygen but at least she's on the mend. Hope to talk to her later.

Meander 3 - Writing - Am nearly finished iwth the last major writing revision of the book. Then starts the real fun with looking for those kind of errors not caught because they're words but not the right words. Also will be doing a lot of finding it and seeing if i can find a way to omit as many as possible. That draft is fun but tedious.

Sunday's Book - Code Blue a medical suspense classic #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Medical #suspense #romance

In the medical suspense Code Blue by Janet Lane Walters, published by Books We Love and previously published as Obsessions, nurse Susan finds the body of the hospital’s “gossip queen” in the orthopedic storage room. She doesn’t realize this is the first of a series of murders involving her colleagues or that her life is in danger. She is a widow and is exploring a new romantic relationship that promises love but she fears the man she is falling for is as controlling as her dead husband. The arrival of courtship gifts, at first, seen as innocuous soon takes on a sinister note.

Reviews

This book kept me on edge from the first page to the last. Several times I just 'knew' I'd figured out who the killer was, but each time, there was a bit of doubt there until the very last paragraph! I highly recommend this book. 4 Stars (Excellent!)"--Tracie's Book Reviews by Kathy's Faves and Raves

"A series of murders, suspense, action, a tad of love makes OBSESSIONS an intriguing tale designed to mystify your mind. If you love mysteries, you'll love Janet Lane Walters newest release. 4 Stars!"--Just Views

"Fast-paced mainstream novel ... Walters plots carefully, each scene constructed to perfection. For readers who enjoy being terrified, this is an author to turn to for entertainment. She tells all, while managing to create paranoia among the characters."--Affaire de CoeurMy Places

When the pregnancy stick turns pink eight weeks later, all her carefully laid plans go down in flames.

Starting over in a big city is no challenge for Ivy. She’s intelligent, successful, and can readily form a plan. Too bad her strategy didn’t involve her new boss turning out to be her baby’s father. She can’t stop her heart from falling for him, but can she protect her baby from a man she hadn’t planned for?

Cor

Friday Robecca Austin is Visiting and Talking about Who She Was Before #MFRWAutor #Finance #Historical #Contemporary #billionaires

1.      What were you before you became an author? Did this influence your choice as a writer?

I was in the financial industry. I don’t think it influenced my writing choice but made me enjoy being creative even more. After long days at work, I got to come home and create. Write whatever I want. I may even bury the finance manager. But not to worry, I write light and fluffy happy ever after romance.

2.      Are you genre specific or general?

For as long as I could remember, I enjoyed reading romance novels. More specifically, historical romance. You know those dime novels or novelettes that you can read in a single sitting – yes! Those books. Those were the books readily available to me growing up. So it was only natural that I started out writing historical romance. I mean, dashing earls! What’s not to love.

Lately, I’ve also fallen in love with billionaire contemporary romance. It’s exciting to put a new twist on my favorite tropes, and I love strong heroes and heroines.

3.      What is your latest release?

My latest release is, Courted, An enemies to lovers billionaire romance. Courted is the first in a three-part series featuring the billionaire brothers of Wheelcaster. It also happens to be my debut in contemporary romance.

It was so much fun writing Heath and Latricia’s story. Their personalities were the opposite. Yet, they want the same things, have the same values. They challenged me to dig deeper as a writer.

4.      What are you working on now?

This is a loaded question. I’m currently working on books two and three in the Wheelcaster series. But I have plot bunnies that can’t seem to sit still!

Is it horrid that I also love those bunnies? Well, I do!

Thanks to numerous ideas, I’m also working on a contemporary holiday novella called, The Christmas Gift, slated to release in November. What is fun about this story is that it’s part of a twelve-book collection with other amazing authors. If you enjoy reading curvy heroines, you might enjoy these stories. And of course, my guy is an alpha-roll (all alpha but sweet on the inside).

5.      Does your reading choice influence your choice of a writing career?

In some ways, it did. Reading historical romance steered me towards writing historical romance. If I had started reading mystery or suspense, I would probably have started writing in a different genre.

But when it comes to a writing career, I’d like to think I would have gotten here eventually. My childhood wasn’t the smoothest. Because of Cystic Fibrosis, I spent lots of time being sick, even more so as a young adult. And so, my escape was reading and writing in notebooks.

6.      Where can we find you?

Thursday's Opening Scene from Children of Fyre #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Fantasy #Romance # dragons #magic

The first bell of the morning roused Cerene. She stretched and touched her toes before sliding out of bed. A trip to her private necessary and a quick wash sent her back to her room in the hareem of the ancient home of the wizards. From the tales she’d heard about the one they’d been forced to abandon, this one spoke of poverty. The one they’d left had been a massive stone structure with high walls and iron gates. Even their numbers had dwindled since returning to this place. This stone house with wooden fences and flimsy gates didn’t suit her father or the other wizards. Their desire to regain the past colored their days.

For her the fence made for an easy escape to the waterfront, the beach and the woods. She had also discovered secret passages within the walls and had explored. These hidden ways had allowed her to spy on the wizards.

She pulled on wide legged trousers and sat to tuck them into her boots. After pulling a tunic over her head, she laughed. She refused to wear the shapeless chiton worn by the women, slaves and breeders alike. She braided her hair and let the plait hang down her back. Though her hair was the same icy blonde as the wizards, hers had streaks of the colors of the fyrestones, red, orange, yellow and blue. Though she had never seen a blue stone. Her green eyes, unlike the frosted gray of the wizards spoke of her less than pure blood.

Cerene sat on the bed and spilled the contents of a leather pouch on the blanket. Metal chains, metal cages either empty or holding fyrestones and a single red stone. She lifted three chains and watched the caged stones flare to life. The yellow shed a ray of light, the orange a tongue of flame and the red brought her a sense of wellbeing. She hung the necklaces around her neck and tucked them beneath her tunic. She scooped the remaining treasures into the pouch and slid them into a small nook between the stones of the wall.

The second bell rang. “Cerene, get out here now.” Malda, the Hag Mother, shouted.

With brisk steps, Cerene entered the main room of the hareem. A dozen slave women, two breeders and six girls stood in a row while Malda inspected them.

The aged woman turned to Cerene. “Serve the porridge and break your own fast. You will escort the women to the garden to harvest root vegetables. Fall is upon us and the tubers must be stored for the winter. Send the girls into the woods to gather kindling.”

“Yes, Hag Mother.” Cerene bowed her head so Malda wouldn’t catch a hint of rebellious plans for the day.

“The wizards have a confab after breaking their fast. I will see to them.” The old woman wheeled and at the door turned. “Make sure the women and girls remain outside until the meeting ends.”

Cerene went to the cooking hearth and swung the huge kettle from the flames. She ladled cooked grains into bowls. The two breeders carried toe food to the long table. When Cerene scraped the kettle clean, she filled the vessel with water, added grain and swung the kettle over the lowest area of flames. Then she prepared food for Malda and herself.

Malda returned and scowled at the plates Cerene set on the table. She filled a cup with herbal tea. “There is no sweetener but honey. No fine ground flour for bread. We must eat this.” She grasped a piece of flatbread made from crudely ground meal. “The fruit remaining on the vines is for the wizards.” She scooped the eggs onto her plate leaving none for Cerene.

Cerene cut goat cheese to spread on her bread. When she finished eating, she escorted the women to the garden and instructed them to pull the tubers and load the wheelbarrows. Then she escorted the girls to the woods. Once they were occupied, she scurried away.

So the wizards meet. She would hear their plans.

With stealth she found the spot in the wooden fence where she had loosened boards. She slid them aside and slipped into the yard. When she reached the rear entrance, she stepped into the narrow hall. A smile curved her mouth. Once inside the passage, ten steps would take her to the place where she could see and hear the wizards.

Her fingers found the pattern on the stone. Silently the wall parted revealing a wide area that became a narrow passage. She entered and paused to allow her eyes to adjust to the dim light. Walking into the passage, she counted her steps and took care not to raise dust to make her sneeze. Her first visit to these passages had nearly revealed her presence. She’d removed the cobwebs and swept most of the accumulated dust.

At the tenth step, she halted and pressed her face to the wall where a pair of holes allowed her to view the happenings. She saw the conference table and the eight remaining wizards. Since their exile here on the isle where they had once lived had begun, most of the wizards from the captured Citadel had died. Of the nine, only two were first level.

Cemon, chief wizard and her father entered the room. He raised his ironwood tipped wand. The white stone on the tip remained unlit. He rapped the table. “We are gathered here to find a solution to our problems. Our supply of white fyrestones dwindles. Soon there will be none.”

Zondo, her father’s second snorted. “All such stones are found on the Island of Fyre. This small isle has no more to mine. Our trader cousins have reported finding no other sources.”

Her father nodded. “For the present we must learn ways to keep the ones we have active.”
