 We've looked at using melodrama in your stories from a number of angles. The use can be direct and also by misdirection. Choosing which to use may take some thought on your part.  Using misdirection can be useful especially when writing long bits of exposition needed to establish backgrounds. Using a bit of melodraama can keep the story moving forward through that information you need the reader to know. Information that could be boring without some kind of break. This will allow the story to fall into a pattern of show and tell. I know it's said to always show the reader what 's happening. Sometimes one needs to tell but those passages don't have to be chapter long. Abit of melodrama will bring the story back into focus.

 Melodrama is emotional rather than logical. Melodrama often comes from a character acting before thinking. This could result in a great scene or a fiasco, All writing techniques have assets and deficits. Learning how to make the most of the melodrama in a scene comes with time and practice. Melodrama is an event or a person that is larger than life. This can be hard to contol.

On the plus side melodrama enhances a scene, On the negative side it takes over and shoves everything else inth the background. Used properly there can be an instant rapport between the reader and the writer. Melodrama can cast a spell or be an annoyance. So handle melodrama with care to avoid losing the reader.

Just what is melodrama. When I hear that mentioned, I always think of the old scene "You must pay the rent." I can't pay the rent." This is repeated several times when in comes the here with "I'll pay the rent." So just what is melodrama? Something bigger than the ordinary life.

Melodrama is really that punch that hits a story and maakes it larger than ordinary. Melodrama is a way of hwowing reality be focusing on shock value. Using melodrama means showing events in a colorful way rather than being mundans. This took of writing brings the reader into the event and arousing their sympathies.Melodrama removes the trivial details and hits the story with an emotional punch,

Setting the mood of a story. What form of mood will you use for the overall tone of your book. Not every scene has to follow the trend but take care when switching from one to another. So what are these forms.

Comedy means an amusing story with a happy ending. If you start a story in this manner, don't switch to tragedy in the second half of the book. Humor can be part of the story but it doesn't necessarily have to be funny for the entire book. Amusing us a better way to go.

Tragedy is almost the opposite of comedy. There is no happy ending. Think Shakespeare's tragedies. Macbeth is a one.

Melodrama appeals to the emotions often by exaggerations . Usually there is a happy ending but not always. The characters are usually larger than life.

So when you start your story you should decide on the form you will use.

Wednesday - Plotting - Melodrama

Don't know about you but when I hear melodrama the first image I see is the evil villain twisting the ends of his mustache and yelling, You must pay the rent." Yes, this is melodrama, but what the term really means is something that's larger than life. Super heros are melodrama. The volcano erupting and threatening the hero and heroine is melodrama. Much depends on how you use this event that could easily go over the top.

Melodrama ignores the ordinary to hone on the unusual and unlikely, making the reader lose faith in the story. There can be a credibility gap. Think of melodrama as salt added to the story to enhance the flavor. Too liberal and the reader backs away. Using none and there is a blandness to the story.

So use melodrama without becoming cliched, trite,, silly or weird. There are ways that this can be dome. Next time I'll look at 7 or 8 wasy to sue melodrama to add flavor to the story.
