1st sentence: Laura scurried down the hospital corridor, feeling like the White Rabbit.

Murder and mayhem with doctors and nurses spike a nicely paced ‘who dunnit.’ Ms. Walters pens the most intriguing characters, and this story pacts a punch bowl full of them.

Excellent gripping read with a surprise and satisfying ending. Couldn’t put the book down once I started. Highly recommended for anyone who likes mysteries and medical dramas with a nice touch of romance.

INCAL _Book 4 Moon Rising

Return to the world where Midra and Midran rule. The god and goddess have two faces. Midra is Mistress of the Moon and also Mistress of the Dark Moon. Midran is Lord of lLght and Lord of shadows.

Thursday Meet the Characters from Haunted Dreams

 Rachel Lange is a student in a Master's program in Child psychology. She is haunted by memories of quarrels with her father. In fact, she hasn't seen him for years. his urging her to marry a certain man had he fleeing an abusive relationship. The man wanted her father's money and her father wanted to use him in business. Neither of these things suited her.

Zach Majory is a fairly recent attorney. When in Afghanistan with the army, his wife left him and took his son and refused to grant a divorce. He now has custody of his sons. One of the boys has nightmares. Another is angry. Rachel steps in to help the children and there is an attraction between her and Zach. But their haunted dreams must be settled before they can seek love.

EXCERPT:

“Here’s Zach’s address. The house isn’t far from your apartment. Say about ten minutes.”

Rachel put the address in her GPS and hurried to her car. She placed the food on the passenger’s seat and backed into the street. Though she’d been willing to do the delivery and curious about Zach and his family she felt reluctant about invading his space. Learning more about him did top her list. Could she put fear aside and learn to trust any man?

Before long she reached the large two story house. She carried the food to the front door and rang the bell.

Zach answered. She felt the impact of seeing him. “Food delivery.” Do this quick. Why this attraction to a man she didn’t know. After the explosive break with Charles she found any involvement with a man scary.

“Come in.”

As he reached for the foil covered pan, his hand brushed hers. Once again she felt as though electrified. Why was this happening?

“Daddy, they’re fighting again.”

Zach groaned. “Sorry. Sammy, take Rachel to the kitchen. He dashed away.

Rachel followed the child past the family room where Zach had corralled two boys. “So you’re Sammy.”

He nodded. “Steve and Gene have been fighting ever since we got here.”

“Sad when brothers fight.”

“Gene’s not my brother. Only Steve is.”

In the kitchen an older woman stood at the counter. She turned. “Hello, I’m Sarah Majors.”

“Rachel Lange. I have your dinner.” She set the pan and bread on the island. “You’ll need to heat both at four hundred degrees for about five minutes. Mr. Grantlan sent the food and you’re in for a treat. Hi dishes are great you often eat more than is wise. I’ve been the recipient of his gifts and just thinking about your coming experience makes me envious.”

“Nice to meet you. People here are as great as I remember. My sons and I lived here for three years with my father while theirs was overseas.”

“Then this is a homecoming for you.”

“Sort of though I’m not sure any of my friends are still around. Are you a native of Fern Lake?”

Rachel shook her head. “I’m here because of the Master’s program in Child Psychology at the University.”

Sarah smiled. “We could use someone like you for Zach’s sons. They’re having problems adjusting to the move.” She shook her head. “I shouldn’t babble. It’s just… You’re easy to talk to.”

“I won’t tell anyone.” Rachel turned to leave.

“You are a good listener.” Mrs. Majors paused. “Why don’t you stay for dinner? Looks like there’s enough for an army.” She removed the foil and slid the pan in the oven and set the bread on a tray to heat this as well. From the fridge she took a bowl of salad.

Before Rachel had a chance to refuse, Zach and the three boys entered. She turned to leave.

He stopped her. “You’ve met Sammy. “These are Steve and my nephew Gene.”

She saw how much Steve looked like his father. The other boy though similar had brown eyes rather than blue.

Steve studied her. “You Dad’s girlfriend. Mom is sure he has one.”

Rachel shook her head. “I’m a friend on his law partner’s fiancée. She asked me to deliver your dinner. I met your dad yesterday at the tree farm. Do you like the one he bought?”

“Not my tree.” He stared at the floor. “Mom said trees were foolish and a waste of money. She has a rich boyfriend but he don’t like kids. That’s why we live with Dd. When she marries her boy friend she’ll take me back.”

Rachel edged toward the hall. She felt sorry for Zach and this difficult child.

Zach left the kitchen. “Mom would like you to stay for dinner and I would like that, too.”

Steve nodded. “Me, too.”

“Then I’ll stay but only if I can do the clean up.”

“That’s a bargain Mom won’t resist.” Zach reached for her jacket. “I’ll hang this up.”

Rachel followed Steve into the kitchen and found a seat at the large island. Soon the meal was on the table. The boys chattered as they ate. Rachel observed.

My 1. Tell me about your latest release? Genre?

Haunted Dreams is a contemporary romance and is the seventh book of the Moonchild series. Once again the action takes place in Fern Lake and centers around a Cancer Libra connection. The hero is an attorney with custody of two sons and a nephew and has haunted memories from his past serive in Afghanistan. The heroine also has her haunted dreams of a bad relationship that when she broke the engagement estranged her from her father and led to almost two years of being stalked by the former fiance. Together, they must also del with the haunted dreams of his two sons.

 

2. Where did the idea arise?

Since thisis part of a series where the characters interconnect. The hero and heroine made an appearance in the book before this, Tangled Dreams.  I also wanted an attorney for the hero and decided Libra was the perfect sign for this attorney. Libras believe in balance and often can see both sides of a problem. The heroine is a Cancer as are the heroines in this series. I used the Cancer love of children and family as the focus of her character,

 

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

Research meant looking up bits about child psychology and PTSD as well as reading the other books in the series to find restaurants and other pleace of interest that would add to the story and also nmention characters who were in other books.

 

4. How long did you take to write the book?

About four months.

 

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?

I've been writing since the days of typewriters and carbon paper. Published for 50 plus years. I'm now a widow but managed to remain married to the same man for more than 50 years. I have four children. The youngest is a biracial adopted daughter. I have seven grandchildren - four are black and three are Chinese. I was born under the sign of Cancer 

.

 

6. Do you write in a number of genres of stick to one?

I write in a number of sub genres of romance, contemporary, fantasy, paranormal, sweet and spicy,. Also have written non-fiction and YA novels. I began with short stories and poems and graduated to novels.

 Zach Majors sat behind the oak desk in his law office. He stared at the phone in his hand. His mother’s words echoed in his thoughts. “I signed the contract to sell the house. That means the move is on schedule for tomorrow. Can’t wait to be settled for the holidays.”

He stretched and rose. Time to let his partner know the move would happen as planned and about his barely mentioned family. He’d told Nate about his guardianship of three boys without mentioning two were his sons, sort of.

With a groan he lifted three letters to be mailed and the discs for two briefs for Mrs. Madden to type and file. He flipped off the lights. At the office manager’s desk behind a plastic shield in the waiting room, he left the letters and discs in the out box on the corner of her desk.

As he was about to pass the sofa and chairs in the small room to reach the door his partner emerged from his office. “Finished for the day/’ Zach asked.

“Definitely. And you?”

Zach nodded. “Heard from my mother. I’ll see you Monday.”

Nate halted. “Is the move on?”

“It is. The movers are coming tomorrow morning and my family will arrive soon after that.” He drew a deep breath. The time for a confession had arrived. “I told you I was guardian of three boys but I failed to mention only one is a nephew. Two are legally my sons.”

Nate’s brow wrinkled. “Legally? Are there problems with the custody? Some court battle ahead?”

Zach shook his head. He wasn’t ready to elaborate. “No real problems but I’ve only had custody of my sons for four months. My coming to Fern Lake made the process harder. Steve, he’s the oldest, resents leaving the city. I’m sure there will be problems but I’ll handle them.”

Nate nodded. “I understand. With you here except for weekends made forming bonds harder.” He stepped toward the door. “Are you sure you’ll be settled by Monday?

Zach laughed. “My mom should have been a drill sergeant. She’ll have the boys including me in line. By Monday I’ll be here and glad to escape. With your wedding on the heels of Christmas I’ll need to know about everything I’ll have to handle while you’re away.”

“You don’t need me. Just ask Joan Madden. She’s the real boss.” He halted. “Do you have your Christmas tree yet?”

“Sort of.”

Nate chuckled. “How can you sort of have a tree? Don’t tell me the movers have one on the truck.”

”They probably do. My mom has this artificial one she’s put up for years. By now it resembles a Charlie Brown tree.”

“Will she be upset if you find a new one?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Then come to Jake’s Tree Farm with me and buy a live one.”

For a moment Zach hesitated. What would his mother think? Her artificial tree had been displayed for about fifteen years. He smiled. A new tree and a new tradition seemed right. His sons knew so little about the holiday season. Their eyes had widened when they’d seen the Thanksgiving feast. How would they react on Christmas morning?

Unwanted guilt rose. He’d sent gifts when he’d known their address. Then Bonnie had moved and a bank account number was all the info he had. He’d always wondered what she had bought them with the extra money he’d sent for holidays and Birthdays. He had no way of learning unless the boys talked. Sammy might but his youngest seldom said much about his mother.

He slipped on his coat. “I’ll join you but I need to go home and change.”

Nate grinned. “I’m not going in my work clothes as Davey calls suits. Meet me at the house. Janine will be joining us.”

“How is Davey handling all this?” Zach hoped the boy wouldn’t sulk about not being included. After the course of treatment for childhood leukemia, the boy had been isolated for weeks at home.

“He’s coming with us. Dr. Chou lifted the stay at home order this morning.”

“That’s great.” Zach paused. “My nephew and one of my sons are close to Davey’s age. When we’re settled and you’re back from your honeymoon, we’ll get together.”

“They’ll meet at the wedding reception,” Nate said.

“That’s right.” Zach hoped the boys would behave. They’d seldom been among strangers and had never been anything like a wedding. He followed Nate to the door. They rode the elevator to the ground floor and went to their cars.

“See you in thirty,” Nate called.

 Meander 1 - Reading - Returning to books from my earlier days of reading. I have a vast collection of Andre Norton's stories and this week they are on my schedule to read. She certainly pulls the reader along. Finished the Beast Master series and reading them was like meeting old friends again. Am now reading some of her others. When I finish the first collection, I'll read the several books I've picked up that are new.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - Time Change. It's been a few days since the dreaded time change and I've still not adjusted to the switch. This has put me behind schedule on a number of things. I usually wake at seven and start my day..Since the chnage it's been eight. Funny what the loss of an hour means. This playing iwth time I suppose must be a good idea but my body doesn't agree. Who knows when I'll catch up.

Meander 3 - Writing - Almost finished with a draft of Haunted Dreams. There will be some scenes to write again since they are new or drastically changed. Must be sure they fit the flow of the story. Then it's onto making the mss look good before I ship it off. Still looking at the end of April for this to happen.

 Meander 1 - Reading - Back to Marian Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series. The way these books are put together is interesting. At present I'm reading ones from the early days when not long ago, I was reading the books set in the future. Doesn't matter about the order since all the books are complete. Yes, perhaps reading from the beginning to the end of the series would be great but reading helps keep me writing on a completely different type of story. I really enjoy doing both. One of my friends mentioned that I was well-read. I guess I am in a way but I don't read much non-fiction unless it's for research. I've been on reading binges before I began to write. I started with American authors and read a slew. Then British authors, French ones, Russian ones and sometimes others in the English translations. I once binged on Harlequin books and finally decided that there were some good ones but I couldn't write one. My mind doesn't travel in that direction. So now I read for escape.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - During the past week I've ben writing blurbs for my series. There are eight and four are done. This is an interesting exercise. Trying to cover a series giving just the gist of the feel of the series without mentioning the individual books has been an interesting exercise. I will do the rest this week. Though they are harder to do, I know I can. It's just a matter of finding that first sentence.

Meander 3 - Writing - I've begun the second draft of Haunted Dreams. This is when I make the story make sense and fill in the blanks I left and hint to the things learned later in the rough draft that need to be mentioned throughout the book.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - The Events of January 6th - I have seen many events that have sickened me over the years. At my age, I have lived and seen much. Yes, there have been riots that sickened me and angered me but what happened on January 6th not only angered me but made me scared. How can one con man, otherwise known as Donald Trump, be able to stir up people to do such a horrid thing, attempt to take over the capitol. I have never been a fan of the man and now I fear i have become his enemy. He has no honor and makes no sense. I wonder what's happening with his brain. Is there a lurking disease that has made him act in such a way. Has the fact that he has crazy and evil people finding him to be a near god. Not only the man who thinks he's a leader but those who slavishly follow him scare me. Unfortunately I know a few of them and the ones I know are bitter, angry people who have no honor, hope or faith. Like their leader they think the world is treating them poorly. They should look into themselves and see where their hate and dishonor lay.

Meander 2 - Writing - Moving forward with the rough draft and finding new things that will enter the book when it's finished.  Will be working solidly during the remaaining days of this month and should have the story in hand.

While these are not the books I hope to write this year, they are related to the Books I would like to complete during the next year.

Haunted Dreams is currently being roughed in and concerns a Cancer heroine and a Libra heor. His dreams are haunted by his time in Afghanistan and also the neglect of his sons by his former wife. Hers are haunted by an estrangement from her father, her only relative.

Moon Rising - Incal is the next book in the Moon Rising Series and is about the rise of the Three and Three there to overcome the evil priests of Midros who hold the land in their hands.

Committee of Angels is another medical suspense that is partly written but somehoe I lost the prologue that set the story spinning. Simce I found it among some papers, I decided to throw this one in for this year. My publisher may want to hit me over the head but hopefully she will enjoy this added tale. The story is based on something I read about the number of doctors who really aren't fit to practice medicine. The percentage is low but what happens when a number of them are found at the same hospital.
