Thursday Writing Incal #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #fantasy #seer #healer #warrior

When I began Incal, I thought first about the three young women who were to have a main rile in the story.  With a dying mother, as young children, the triplets were separated and each one taking to a different place to grow up. Part of the story concerned them finding each other before they could begin their quet. Then I looked at the three young men. One was the son of the villain. Until I was further into the story, I learned they were half-brothers though only one was recognized by the father. The city of Quito was important in the story since that's where the fighting priests had their training place and where the Voice of Midran in Incal had his base. There may be my favorite characters in the four books ending the series.

The mountains of tis land were interesting to use and some of this was based on reading I had done about the Incas when researching another book. Having bits and pieces to use in other stories is alsays great for a writer.

Tuesday's Writer's Tip - Viewpoint- Multiple Chracters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Tip #Writing #Viewpoint #Multiple Characters

Especially in longer works multiple viewpoints are used. I've been guilty of this a number of times and I like showing the story from many character's viewpoints. I once used this as a vehicle to do vanishing characters. A number of the characters were killed leaving only the heroine, the villain and the hero standing when the book ended. There are tricks to doing this.

One of the tricks is to take a bit longer to make the character come alive and for the reader to form a bond with them. Another trick is to perhaps show some of the characters in the opening scenes and how they relate to each other. This I used in the Affinities series, starting iwth one character and bringing her two brothers and sisters into her opening scene. The only character not there was the fifth character who became their friend.

Another trick is to have an event surrounding them like a fire that effects a number of people. This is called building connections and is very necessary.

Keeping the switches simple can help. Using them to advance the story is another way. Take time to let the reader know you'll be writing in a second character's view for a time. Referring to the next viewpoint character by name or wondering where they are located can be another way to alert the reader. Don't clutter the openign scene with too many characters in too short a time perion. Introduce them slowly rather than have a scene where there are a dozen characters vieing for the reader's attention.

Keep these scenes active. Static scenes don't do much for the reader/

So choose your method of choosing a viewpoint character or characters for a story with care.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 = Reading - Am immersed in Marian Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series and am reading the ones that are the latest. I'm enjoying becoming reconnected with some old friends in the books. Ehen I finish these, I'll pick up on some of the books I've downloaded to be read. After finishing them it will be back to read the books from Book one.

Meander 2 Thoughts - It is very cold these past few days and there are times when I wish for a different house. On the political scene, things are chancy these days and I don't understand how people can cling to lies and try to make them truths. I also find some of the congressional members without an ounce of courage. There are some who have taken stands that I admire for they care more for their country than they do for political parties. I wish I could see anything but the ones who cling to lies are more concerned with power that life. People are suffering but so many don't care. Life always changes and fighting those changes is futile.

Meander 3 - Writing - Only one scene to finish in the rough draft of Haunted Dreams and then the fun begins. Looking forward to the time.
