Thursday Murder and Poisoned Tea Janet Lane Walters - More characters who appear in the series.

Always Katherine and Robespierre have roles in this story. Let me show you a bit about some of the other regulars.

Reverend Potter -

“Good grief, Katherine, I hope he’s not planning to bite me again.”
Edward Potter, pastor of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, glared at the cat.
His voice had risen to a high pitch. “Whatever do you feed him? He’s ever
so much bigger than Bitsy.”
The temptation to say my pet fed on pastors was strong. I refrained
and fought to control a grin that threatened to blossom. Teasing Edward
usually results in a lecture delivered in an indignant voice.
With an air of disdain, Robiesperre stretched. His back rippled in a
way I envy. Then he slithered around Edward.
When Edward reached the top of the steps, he turned and peered
the cat. “He’s becoming more brazen.”
“Only toward selected guests. He ignores most people.” I turned my
head and Edward brushed my cheek with his lips.
Edward is a dapper little man with an ear for gossip and a penchant
for turning even the slightest event into a fiesta or a disaster. He’s astute
about church politics. The coffers at St. Stephen’s are filled through his
ability to cosset and cajole the elderly population of the church, mainly
wealthy women. I partially fit the category, being over sixty-five, and while
not rich, I’m at least comfortable.
When he entered the sunlit kitchen, the expression on his face
announced a problem. He walked into the living room. Unlike most of my
guests, he considered chats at the kitchen table for commoners. In the
living room, he perched on the edge of a Queen Anne chair, purchased
years ago before antiques became the rage.

Maria - Next door neighbor. Maria is featured in many of the books.

Robespierre stretched and ambled across the lawn to the yard next
door where Maria Prescott was enjoying the sun and the baby she and Paul
had adopted in Spain. The cat sat on the edge of a bright blanket and
stared at the infant. We all wondered how he would act when Carlos began
to crawl.

Sarah lives across the street and plays a role in many of the stories.

The next afternoon, Beth dropped by while I sat on the porch with my

neighbor, Sarah. Sarah’s children, three of her own and two foster
children, played in the yard. The two older ones, Larry and Jamal,
supervised the younger ones by shouting commands.
     “Beth, where’s Robby?”
“Pete took him to Little League practice.” She sank on the top step.
“I think he’s too young for that kind of competition. Pete laughs at me.”
“Do you mean Pete Duggan?” Sarah leaned forward. “I didn’t think
he was interested in anyone under twenty-five and who wasn’t female.”
Beth closed her eyes, “He’s adopted my son. He tolerates me.”
“You can change that,” Sarah said. “Saw the new organist this
morning. What a hunk. Just invite him over when Pete’s around. He sure
thrives on competition.”
     Beth smiled. “That’s an idea.”
I looked away. Though I think Pete and Beth are a great match, I
wouldn’t interfere. Matchmaking can be hazardous to your well being. If
the couples like each other -- great. If they don’t, you lose two friends.

Excerpt:

Ten minutes later, he backed his blue sports car from the driveway and headed to Le Danse. He found a spot in the parking lot and walked to the house that had been converted into a dance studio. He opened the door. Up or downstairs, he wondered.

"Manda, you can't climb the railing. Do you want to fall?"
"Pick up. Want to see Honor."
     "You saw her once."
     "Again."
     "Baby, you're too heavy."
Blake reached the top of the steps. Ginny stood with her hands on her hips and stared down at a toddler dressed in pink tights and a red leotard. The child looked ready to throw a tantrum.
"See Honor." She stamped her foot.
"No. And no more screams or tears. Do you want to go home to Miss Nellie?"
     "Can I help?" Blake asked.
The toddler turned and stared. Ginny's eyes widened. "Dr. Marshall, what are you doing here?"
"I happened to be in the neighborhood?"
A skeptical look crossed her face. "And I have wings and can fly."
Her tart answer made him chuckle. "I heard you need a weight-lifter." His gaze took in her long legs covered by black tights. He wished the large green shirt didn't cover her full breasts, narrow waist and hips
The toddler pulled on his leg. "Who you?"
     "Blake."
She tilted her head to one side. Hazel eyes appraised him. How odd, he thought and wondered about her relationship to Ginny.
"Brake. I break my doll. Someone break you?"
He laughed. With her light eyes and skin, Manda bore little resemblance to Ginny. Was the child's father responsible for Ginny's wariness? "No one broke me. I fix broken people."
     "Fix my doll."
     "I'd have to see her."
Ginny laughed. "The doll needs more than an orthopedic surgeon. She ran her trike over its head."
     "Mama fix people, too."
"She sure does." He looked at Ginny. "Do you mind if I show her the dancers?"
"Be my guest, but be prepared to hold her until class ends."
"I don't mind." He grasped the toddler and rose. "Let's see your sister." He carried her to the observation window. She peered through the glass. Her soft curls tickled his face.
     She patted him. "You nice."
"So are you." She smelled of soap and baby powder. Somehow, this child felt as though she belonged in his arms.
Manda leaned forward and pressed her face against the glass. "There Honor."
Blake looked around her. He saw two black girls in the lineup. Neither had the skin coloring of the little girl he held. Genes? Two fathers? He frowned. He didn't like that idea at all.
When the class room door opened, Blake stepped back to avoid being caught in the rush of girls. Manda wiggled free. She ran to a slender girl who looked like Ginny must have as a child.
"Honor dance. Manda see. Brake hold."
Ginny put her arm around the girl's shoulders. "Honey, you were great. Do you like the class?"
     "Oh, yes."
Manda grabbed Blake's hand. "This Brake."
"Hello, Honor." He saw the same uncertainty in her dark eyes as he'd seen in Ginny's. "I'm pleased to meet you. I work at the hospital with your mother."
Honor edged closer to Ginny. "Is your name really Brake?"
"It's Blake. I stopped by to see if the three of you wanted to join me for dinner at the Pizza Castle." He felt a twinge of guilt about using this vulnerable child.
"Yes," Honor said. "That's my favorite place to eat."
Ginny's eyes darkened to the color of obsidian. Blake swallowed. "Better ask your mother."
"Pizza. Pizza." Manda skipped around them.
Honor looked at her mother. "Mama, can we go please?"
The glare Ginny shot at him made Blake retreat a pace. All's fair, he thought. Except love wasn't on his mind.
Finally, she nodded. "We can this time, but in the future, I'll decide. Since I planned on the Pizza Castle for dinner, I guess Dr. Marshall can come with us."
Manda held out her arms to Blake. "Pick up. Carry."
He lifted her. She hugged him. A strange feeling settled in his chest. The only children he'd ever held had been sick and in pain. They'd never caused his chest to tighten and ache. He watched Ginny. Her rigid spine and braced shoulders declared her disapproval of his tactics.
Trapped, Ginny thought. He'd manipulated her, but if she had turned him down, she would have had to deal with the girls' sulks. Though he'd left arrogance at the hospital, she knew that quality lurked beneath the surface of his smile. Going to dinner with Blake Marshall with or without the girls hadn't any place on her list of things to do.

Meandering On Monday with Janet Lane Walters #MFRWAuthor #BWLAuthor #Poem #Bell's Palsy #Writing

Meander 1 -- Poem --  A Summer Sunday Spent With Strokes

Seven AM - Already warm
Summer Sunday, different.
Not to church or to the pool
Pat and I the whole large ward.
Beds, baths, feed and help
Heat grows heavy.
Twenty two beds precisely placed
Against the walls. U-shaped mouth
engulfs us for the day.
Mrs. Smith or Mrs. Jones
Who first?
Twenty-two strokes for morning care.
Twenty -two fronts for Pat/
Twenty-two backs for me.
Charity ward where elderly come
No one left to care/
Pat and I cared a lot
But time is heavy - not
beds and baths
Two student nurses
Heat oppressive on a summer Sunday spent with strokes.

Meander 2 - Bells Palsy - Woke up the other day with a horrid pain in my right eye. Wondered why but found no solution. Though eye drops would work but there were none to be found in the house. Went to Costco and bought a lot, came home to put things away. Then at lunch foud I had no ability to suck through a straw. Now I"m really worried so called the doctor. That afternoon, I arrived. I told him I either had conjunctivitis or ahd a mild stroke. He told me to blink my right eye. Couldn't. You have Bell's Palsy caused by a virus. Will improve. Buy lots of liquid tears and when the eye pains use them. I have and it's some better today. Still have problem drinking through a straw on the right but not on the left.

Meander 3 - Writing. Am half way through the plot draft of Lines of Fire challenged. When that is done, and it means putting in all those scenes that are there with a sentence or two. They make love. There is a duel. Probably two weeks to finish this draft. Then three to go.

Sunday's Book Murder and Poisoned Tea Janet Lane Walters #MFRWAuthor #BWLAuthor #Cozy mystery #Organist #Church

Murder and Poisoned Tea (Mrs. Miller Mysteries Book 2) by [Walters, Janet Lane]

How did this book come about. In an interesting way. Since I thought the first book was a single title, I had no desire to write another, especially one in first person. Several fans wrote and asked when there would be a new adventure. I spent some time thinking about my heroine and Robespierre. For some reason, a local minister popped into my head. How could I use the church in a setting. So I went to bed for a number of nights in a row and suddenly the book was born. Some of the characters had fleeting bits of many people I know. Thus the organist was formed and some of the other characters in the book.

BLURB:
The moment she hears his mastery of the organ, Katherine covets him as St. Stephen’s new Minister of Music. Handsome, charming and vastly talented, the women of the congregation adore him. Even Katherine is swayed by his manners and ability, But Roger not only brought beautiful music, he brings poisoned notes to the choir. Katherine seeks to find the secret of why he has changed churches yearly. She prays the discovery will be in time to prevent a tragedy.

Friday Shiela Stewart is visiting and talking About Who She was Before #MFRWAuthor #Paranormal romance #Darkness

1.      What were you in life before you became a writer? Did this influence your choices as a writer?

I’ve always been a writer. In my youth, I made up stories for friends and relatives, then in my teens I started writing them down.  I actually felt relaxed while writing, letting everything disappear around me. I continued writing and my hubby always encouraged me to submit my work, but I never felt good enough. Having had enough of his nagging, I finally did and now I thank him for pushing me to do something I only dreamed about.
What really influenced me was TV and Movies. I never wanted to be an actor like my friends. Instead, I wanted to write the stories.

2.      Are you genre specific or general?

I’d say I’m specific. I mostly write paranormal romance, though I have written three that aren’t, paranormal is my love.

3.      What is your latest release?

My latest release is the last book in my Darkness series, Surviving the Darkness. There are eight books in the series. Though it’s not entirely paranormal, there are aspects of it in the book.

4.      What am I working on now?

Currently I am revamping and editing an old story I wrote several years ago. It’s not a romance, but instead it’s a suspense with twists and turns that will leave your head spinning.  It’s called Terror Incognito.  I’ve decided to post a chapter a week on Wednesdays, on my blog Shiela’s books n’ stuff.

5.      Are you genre specific or general? I don’t mean major genres but sub divisions of romance, mystery, paranormal. (Didn't answer)

6.      Did your reading influence your choice of a writing career?

The very first books I read were from my older sister. I was 12 when she lent me Flowers in the Attic. But more so it was Nora Roberts. I loved how she told a story of romance, mystery and suspense. That was exactly what I wanted to write.

7.      Where can we find you?

You can find me in ever book store online as well as at my website: www.shielastewartsbooks.com

Thursday Murder and Mint Tea Janet Lane Walters - Meet Some of the Characters #MFRWAuthor #BWLAuthor #Characters #Mystery

When one is involved in writing a series, there are some characters who appear in many of the books. When I wrote Murder and Mint Tea, I didn't think of recurring characters. But when I went on to create a series, I found a number who became frequent visitors.

Of course, Katherine is there in every story. Here's a bit of her.

The pale winter sun shone through the kitchen window.  I cleaned up the last of the mess from my adventure.  The caper hadn’t gone as planned.  How many do?  In my many years of life, most of my plans have taken an unexpected turn.
Merup.”  Robespierre my Maine Coon cat announced a visitor on the way.  He’s almost as good as a doorbell.  The firm rap on the door told me this wasn’t one of my female friends.  “Come in.”

A Character who became a regular is the young police officer she has known since he was a boy.

Pete Duggan strode across the room and thrust a bouquet of bright carnations into my hands.  A red hue, almost as vivid as his hair, stained his face.  “Mrs. Miller, got to hand it to you.  I’ve come to eat crow.”

To hide a smile I buried my face in the flowers and inhaled the spicy fragrance.  “How about chocolate chip cookies and mint tea instead?”
“Sounds great.”  He straddled one of the chairs at the table and picked up the local newspaper.  “Local Woman Thwarts Robbers.”  His grin made him look like the ten-year-old who had moved into the corner house on my block.  He cleared his throat.  “The guys at the station ribbed me about this.  Did you forget the plan?”
How, when the idea to catch the real thieves had been mine?  A series of burglaries had plagued the neighborhood for months and had troubled me.  Especially when the police had decided two teenage neighbor boys were the culprits.  I knew the pair and had disagreed strongly enough to set myself up as a victim.  Then I informed Pete.
“Did you forget?”  he repeated.  “When I crept up the stairs and saw you grappling with one of the men, I nearly had a heart attack.”

A third character who became a regular is Lars but he's only a name in the first book.

A very important character in these books is Robespierre, a Maine Coon cat who lives with Katherine and often makes his opinions known in a cat-like way.
Just them the cat door opened.  Robespierre made a grand entrance.  Flakes of snow dotted his brown and black fur.  His gait suggested a mission.  He halted in front of Pete and banged the young policeman’s leg with his head.
Pete crouched and scratched the cat’s head.  “Not my fault, old man.  She jumped in on her own.”
Robespierre’s rumbling purr suggested he understood and accepted Pete’s explanation.
“He’s been out of sorts since the thieves visited.”
“Me, too.”  Pete hugged me.  “Never again.  Promise.  We need you around.  Think about being a silent partner.  There are times when I need someone to listen.”
“If listening is all you need, I’ll be here.  No more active involvement in crime for me.”

In other posts on Thursday, I'll introduce you to some of the characters who make up Katherine's life.  There are two neighbors, her son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter.

EXCERPT:
A rap on the window broke into her reverie. A grinning Annette peered through the glass. "Girl, quit your dawdling. Young Dr. Marshall has arrived." She pressed a hand to her chest. "He's a man for every woman's fantasy."
Ginny shook her head. She pictured the older Dr. Marshall, subtracted years and added hair. Pleasant. Maybe cute, but hardly fantasy material. She rose. "I'm on my way. Wouldn't want him to accuse me of ignoring him."
"Won't happen. He seems as nice as his dad. Run, don't walk. Rescue him before Val drowns him in sweetness."
Ginny frowned. Val ... Sweet ... impossible. The unit's secretary was a mistress of the rude put-down.
When Ginny turned the corner, she stopped short. A barely contained urge to run in the opposite direction caused her to approach the desk with slow, measured steps. Young Dr. Marshall was tall, handsome ... and black. He was also the resident who two years ago had questioned her nursing judgment. Though she had been vindicated a patient had suffered needless pain.
Her hands curled into fists. Dr. Marshall laughed at something Val said and then turned to Lisa. The knot in Ginny's abdomen swelled into her chest. No way, she thought. She wouldn't allow this man or anyone to detour her from her chosen road. She plastered a smile on her face that she knew didn't match the hostility she felt.

"Dr. Marshall, I'm Ms. Barr, Patient Care Coordinator for the unit. Welcome to Hudson View."

Tuesday's Writer's Tip - Showing place in your story #MFRWAuthor #BWLAuthor #Place #Writing

The reader needs to know where your characters are not only in time but in space. When I first submitted a manuscript, an editor wrote back saying she liked the idea for the story but the characters existed in a vacuum. She rewrote a small passage showing me what she meant. Took me awhile to rewrite that story putting the characters in places or settings. There were other problems but that one opened my eyes.

When do you need to establish the setting or place of the story. In the opening scene, if you use flashbacks, during the action scenes and when the main characters are together.

Establishing the place where the story takes pace fits with the time period you've chosen. You probably wouldn't find the hero or heroine in a dungeon if your story is a contemporary. If they are you need to let the reader see what they see through the character's whose viewpoint is being shown. Remember different characters see the setting differently.

Take the dungeon. A heroine might focus on the dark dankness of the place. The hero might see something different like finding a way out. So when you start your story, let the reader see, feel, taste, hear and all the senses about the place where the characters have landed.
