1.What is your latest book or the one to be featured? what genre?

Shades of Persephone is the novel I wish to feature. It is best described as a literary mystery, although it can also be classified as mythological, espionage, and romance.

 

2. Where did the idea arise?

While travelling around the Mediterranean, I fell in love with the old Venetian harbour of Chania, a city on the north coast of Crete, reputed to be the oldest site of western civilization in Europe. What a setting for fiction! What plots might have unfolded here given the fascinating history of the island! Why not a contemporary one?

Inspired by ubiquitous mythical signage, but especially by Lawrence Durrell’s The Alexandria Quartet and John Fowles’ The Magus, novels I was reading at the time, I began sketching out plausible characters of varying backgrounds, foremost among whom, Steven Spire, a young expat as narrator and central character of artistic temperament in need of purpose. Bar and café conversations led to hints of foreign intrigue. Ancient ruins gave way to Nazi runes. Crooked laneways led to mountain retreats and buried secrets. Hydra-headed truth demanded a place on the table along with the ouzo and artichoke hearts. And love, naturally, raised all expectations with the birth, mirroring Aphrodite’s rise from the sea, of Magalee De Bellefeuille.

 

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or get distracted by wanting to look at one thing more?

 

Research into local and European history was time consuming. So much to understand as far as story background was concerned. I also needed to appreciate the significance of Greek mythological characters and how they might influence the characters I was bringing to life. Easy to be distracted in that world for sure. Most enjoyable is research done in situ, Greece with respect to Shades Of Persephone,

 

4. How long did it take to write the book?

It took a good year to bring all elements of the story together. However, the writing is never finished. Improvements are always possible. But then we move on to other themes and other plots.

 

5.How long have you been writing? Sun sign?

I have been involved in serious writing since retiring in 1999. Aries motivates me in my efforts to write about the world I inhabit and the one I imagine.

 

 

 

6. Do you write in a number of genres or stick to just one?

I attempt to write literary fiction that entertains while being socially relevant. I lean towards mystery, with romantic entanglement an integral part of the action. Greek mythology and literary allusion underpin plot development. Irony is pervasive.

 . Tell me about your latest release or the book you wish to feature? Genre? 

My latest is Stolen at the Wildlife Sanctuary, new this summer. It is a YA mystery and the third of my Linda Tassel Mystery series.

 

2. Where did the idea arise? 

My original idea was to write a mystery series based on my love of Nancy Drew but have my heroine look more like me, and NOT have her be a perpetually 16 year old. So Linda is a young Cherokee woman and her boyfriend Tad Gist is a Buffalo born transplant to the South of the 1990s. In the first and second books they were in high school, and in this one they're in college together.

 

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?  

Always a danger--getting lost in research.  I can tell you LOTS about Underground Atlanta and its history! For this one I relied on my memories of living in the area and all the things I loved about this vibrant city. I enjoyed delving into Chrokee customs and history too, of course. The sexual harassment of young women in educational environment and colonial attitude elements are, unfortunately, perrenial subjects.

 

4. How long did you take to write the book? 

About 9 months.

 

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign? 

My first published novel came out in (gulp!) 1988, WAY before most of my current young readers were born! My Sun Sign is Aries.

 

6. Do you write in a number of genres or stick to one? 

I enjoy writing historical novels with good love stories the most, but mysteries are a wonderful challenge to my non-linear brain. And of course, Linda and Tad provide a growing teen aged love story, as well as mystery-solving partnership.

1.  Tell me about your latest release or the book you wish to feature? Genre?

 

Hung Out to Die is my first mystery novel. The main character is Riel Brava. Riel, at least on the surface, is an unusual character for me. He’s male. Quintessentially male in many ways: confident, fit, good looking, charming, ambitious.  He also has a distinctive personality trait; he’s a psychopath. The kind of psychopath that often succeeds in a corporate structure that calls for dispassion.

An American, Riel is currently living in Nova Scotia and working as CEO of the Canadian Cannabis Corporation. He aspires to return to the U.S. and run for president. First, he wants to hone his leadership skills and cement his business credentials.

Riel lives between worlds. His first name is Gabriel; his adoptive parents’ last name is Brava. Riel is neither French nor Latino. In that same way, Riel is a successful man in a competitive world, but it is a world he does not identify with on fundamental levels.

 

 

2. Where did the idea arise?

A bath. I’m a big believer in bubbles, candles, scrubs, essential oils, and music with birds chirping in the background. Friends call this bathroom time my shrine. One night immersed in a lavender cloud I realized it was time to begin writing my mystery. Get off the pot kind of thing. That led me to a litany of possible characters and crimes. Through the mist Riel emerged. Not fully formed but outlined enough that I wrote down my ideas before I even moisturized.

 

 

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

 

There were key elements to the story that had to be authentic, at least in a fictional context. I have done a lot of reporting on the cannabis industry and have had the opportunity to tour a cannabis production plant before it opened. Likewise, for years as a freelance journalist I wrote on the health sector and health issues, including mental health and personality issues. As a communications specialist, many of my clients were from this sector.

I always find it easy to get distracted when I am writing. As a freelance journalist, however, I learned to stay on track. Working to deadline meant there often wasn’t time to travel down interesting but non-essential paths. You are also working to a specific word count as a journalist so you know no matter how interesting the asides, they will not make it into the article for length reasons.

 

4. How long did you take to write the book?

 

A year. There is part of me that thinks I got distracted from writing it too much during that year. There is another part that thinks that time helped to better formulate characters and plot.

 

 

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?

 

I have been writing for a lifetime. For many years, I was a freelance writer for online and print publications throughout North America. More recently I have turned and returned to fiction and poetry. I co-wrote my first book in 2006, Celebrity Court Cases: Trials of the Rich and Famous. This was a collection of articles on famous people, including Martha Stewart and Bill Clinton, who found themselves in trouble with the law.  Last year The Thong Principle: Saying What You Mean and Meaning What You Say was published by a U.S. publisher. This year Hung Out to Die hit bookshelves, virtual and real.

I’m a Leo, although I am on the cusp with Virgo.

 

 

6. Do you write in a number of genres of stick to one?

 

I have published poetry and literary short stories. I have published thousands of articles in magazines and newspapers, online and in print. I have published personal essays, usually humorous. More recently, I have published non-fiction books and my first mystery novel as well as two mystery short stories. Whatever I am working on at the time is my favorite.

1. Tell me about your latest release or the book you wish to feature? Genre?

 

 The Rise of Jake Hennessey is the last story in the Harmony Duprie world and occurs twenty-some years after the events in The Ranger’s Dog Tags. Jake Hennessey is a semi-retired jewel thief, who is living out his life as a bar owner and supposedly model citizen in the small town of Oak Grove. But all that is upset when a federal agent saunters into Jake’s bar, claiming Harmony’s life is in danger. The book is suspense/mystery with a touch of romance.

 

2. Where did the idea arise?

 

 Jake Hennessey was developed as a background character in the first book of the Harmony Duprie Mysteries, but as the series progressed, he became more important and became a major part of the story. There were several times I tried to write him out, and it didn’t work Still, he wouldn’t reveal his secrets to me until after I had finished the six books of the Harmony Duprie Mysteries. Then, at his insistence, I went back and wrote the story of how he and Harmony met, a prequel to the Harmony books, but written from the point of view of Jake.

 

Then, in order to give Jake a chance at a happy ending, I wrote The Rise of Jake Hennessey, a sequel to the entire series. But I made him work for it, including several attempts on his life.

 

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

 

The book is set twenty-some years in the future, so I had to make predictions of what changes might have happened. Some were easy - like changes to cars, but others were more subtle. Would federal agencies still have the same names? And what would the relationship between them be? I didn’t spend too much time on research for this book, unlike some of the others I’ve written.

 

 

4. How long did you take to write the book?

 

It took me over a year to write this story. But I bought a house and moved halfway across the United States in that time, which left no time for writing. Plus, after the move, it took several months to get settled in and get back into the writing habbit. And yes, the book was yelling me all that time, telling me to get my act together and get back to work.

 

 

 

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?

 

 I started writing back in the days of ancient history, after I graduated from high school. I started with writing poetry, and had some small success with being published. As I got more involved in the computer field, the poetry became harder to write, to my despair. But one year I attempted to write a book for NaNoWriMo and although I didn’t ‘win” I was hooked and I’ve been writing books since.

 

My sun sign is Libra. I think it fits, most of the time.

 

6. Do you write in a number of genres or stick to one?

 

So far, I have tackled three different genres — paranormal, mystery and suspense. I started with paranormal, with Wolves’ Pawn, intending it to be a standalone. It turned into a three book series, but each one can be read on its own.

When I started writing The Marquesa’s Necklace, the first book in the Harmony Duprie Mysteries, it was supposed to be another paranormal, with the original title of The Ghost That Loved Me. But my characters wouldn’t stand for it, and it became a mystery.

The two Jake books—The Fall of Jake Hennessey and The Rise of Jake Hennessey—are best described as suspense, with crime and action subplots. (And a touch of romance, of course)

My current work in progress is a historical mystery, set in Pittsburgh in the mid-1980s, when the city was in the midst of major changes. It features a female PI, and is grittier than the Harmony books. (And yes, the research for this one is taking me a lot of time because I am trying to make it as realistic as possible.

2. Where did the idea arise?

 

Since I adore chocolate (yeah, I’m an admitted chocoholic), and since I love hot romances – especially with two guys and one lucky lady – Anything You Want was the perfect combination of the two.

 

 

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

 

I had to research Caribbean resorts that cater to an ‘anything goes’ attitude in terms of hookups between guests, food play, etc. Believe it or not, there are a ton of those resorts around. I had a great time looking at all the sexy pictures.

 

 

4. How long did you take to write the book?

 

I’m a fast writer – generally averaging 4000 to 4500 words daily. I also plot thoroughly before I begin writing. Given those two things, Anything You Want didn’t take long at all to write.

 

 

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?

 

I’ve been writing since I was a kid and actually wrote my first book Dimples the Adventurous Flea when I was nine years old. I even illustrated the book, made copies, and sold them to my friends’ parents in the neighborhood. My first book tour.

 

I haven’t a clue what my sun sign is, but it sounds like a fun thing to explore.

1. What were you before you became an author? I was a paralegal for a criminal law firm for almost 14 years.  Then I was a IT Manager for an electrical contracting firm for 14 years also. Did this influence your choices as a writer? Sometimes.  I’ve written a book about lawyers, A Witch’s Quandary, they just happened to be in Scotland. LOL I’ve written a few books involving computers, cyber security. Security Force of Two, etc.

 

2. Are you genre specific or general? I don’t mean major genres but subdivisions or romance, mystery or paranormal. I write Paranormal Romance/Mystery. Recently l’ve dabbled in western, historical, timetravel, in addition to romance. But there is always a bit of mystery and magic in all my novels. 

 

3. What is your latest release? Security Force of Two - A former CIA agent and a Special Forces vet return to their small hometown for different reasons none of which includes involvement in an investigation of the new police chief’s murder. Release March 20, 2023.

 

Set for release July 10, 2023, Raven’s Hollow Spring Magic - Spring is in full bloom in Raven’s Hollow, a unique, small town in the Colorado Rockies when a powerful witch’s mother goes missing and her dragon shifter fiancé travels back in time to find her.  Was the antique jelly bean machine to blame? 

 

 

4. What are you working on now? The second book in the Mountain Town Mystery Series.  Security Force of Two was the first book.

 

5. Does your reading choices influence your choice of a writing career? No I don’t think so.  I am kinda eclectic in my reading choices.  I love a good mystery, some contemporary romance, but usually whatever it is has to have magic. Reality is over rated.

1. Tell me about your latest release or the book you wish to feature? Genre?

       Quartermaster is a paranormal pirate romance and a spin-off from the Walk the Walk series. Branko and his vampiress may be living their HEA as landlubbers but Patricia’s Wish sails on with Captain Teeth at the helm and Chub returning as Quartermaster. It’s 1725 and most of the pirates have taken pardons from the Spanish or English government. Teeth and Chub are on the hunt for treasure—not gold, but love. The sidekicks are ready to become heroes.

 

2. Where did the idea arise?

       I’m a homeschooling mom. I needed to teach the foundations of democracy to my then-10-year-old. From Hammurabi’s code in ancient Mesopotamia to the pirate parlay code, I found democracy was found in more places than in ancient Greece and the colonial USA. In fact, women and people of color had equal rights on the sea, but not on land in colonial America. I fell in love with the governing systems of what I always thought were “lawless scoundrels.” Every job aboard was a voted position from Captain to poop deck scrubber, and each person holding those positions had an equal vote. Pirate Captains were slave liberators and portrayed by villains because the ones losing money are the same men writing the history. The truth is buried in the shipping logs from the port masters and merchant boat Captains. I was fascinated!

 

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

     Quartermaster comes from a love of psychological warfare in the records of 1700s piracy. In the movies, pirates are portrayed as brainless sword-slashers when historically, they hardly ever boarded another vessel. They depended on their reputations to scare their opponents—easy when the general population was superstitious. I fell in love with the tales of Sam Bellamy taking the Whydah by making a pretend ghost ship, Blackbeard braiding firecrackers into his beard to appear possessed, and the rest of the shenanigans of the 4 years called the Golden Age of Pirates. While I wrote about this time period in the Walk the Walk series, Quartermaster takes place in 1725. Most of the pirates had taken pardons and retired from the sweet trade to a landlubbing life of agriculture or crime. I wondered what would happen if a boat refused to retire. They would be hated by the Spanish, English, and colonial Americans…

 

4. How long did you take to write the book?

        I wrote Quartermaster in a month. I was already half in love with Chub from his role in my other book series. I knew I wanted him to represent tough men who weren’t tall, dark, and classically handsome gentlemen. Chub is a 5 foot 5 inches tall, freckled, red-headed pirate with more brains than manners. What he brings to the table is a patient disposition, a talent for teaching, and a huge heart. He teaches the young crew how to sail, the Captain to read, and his lady love to trust again. I wanted his HEA so badly, the story wrote itself.

 

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?

        This Aries sun/Taurus moon/Aquarius rising author started writing in 2018. I used to write books to be printed at our local office supply store, so my friends could read them after their homeschooled kids went to bed. We would meet for drinks and an informal book club to giggle over the dirty bits once a month. When the pandemic canceled my husband’s business travels, he found out about my “playing author.” Within his first 24 hours at home, I had a website, business cards, manuscript queries sent, and a membership to the Kentuckiana romance writers.

          I may bounce from pirates to cowboys to scientists to monsters, but all my books are paranormal. They say you must write what you know, and my life is too strange to write anything else.

Seeker is a medieval Scottish romance, part of a 7-book series about a magical mortar and pestle that brings true love to its holders. Castles…mythical creatures…to everyday adventurers, it has something for everyone. In Seeker, restless archer Aileana yearns for a target to prove her worth, but when a magical mortar and pestle spins its charm upon her and a rival clan’s son, winning the yearly tournament might mean the difference between war and peace, as well as risking her heart.

 

2.      Where did the idea arise?

 

Seeker came about from two minor characters in another one of my books in my historical trilogy (A Hundred Lies). I wondered: Wouldn’t Aileana (the spunky sister of the hero; she is adventurous and a very non-typical noblewoman of a magical family) and Brodie (a reserved, beta-hero who has a medical condition that prevents him from being war chieftain) make a great story of their own?

 

3.      How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

 

Thankfully my world was already built in my trilogy. However, I had to stay on point with the continuity and timeline, so it matched the other books in the series, since this story happens concurrently with one of them. And rabbit holes – yes! I spend hours down them all the time. Researching this and that – clothing, foods, archery, illnesses, herbal treatments, vernacular, medieval tournaments, and oh my so many strategy and tavern games of the 1300s. With historical books especially. For one of my previous books in the series, I visited an actual Viking ship since the Norse played predominantly in that story. I’ve also been to Scotland, and have visited countless castles.

 

4.      How long did you take to write the book?

 

Since it’s a novella (~150 pages or so), it was quick. Only a few months! This one came rather easily to me. That is not always the case.

 

5.      Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?

 

I’ve been writing for over twenty years and have five books published. I’ve written about nine or ten though…I’m a Pisces and love the great outdoors. Although I’m not psychic, I am very true to my sign’s traits.

 

6.      Do you write in a number of genres of stick to one?

 

I write contemporary romance, women’s fiction, mainstream/commercial fiction, and historical romance (with paranormal elements).

1. Tell me about your latest release or the book you wish to feature? Genre?

Hi, my name is D. V. Stone. I’m so happy to be here to talk about my latest book, Sea Hunter, which is part of a multi-author series of seven books tied together by a mystical mortar and pestle.

Sea Hunter is my first historical/paranormal/romance. It takes place after WWII and focuses on Zahra Corbyn and Jack Alexander in an enemy-to-lovers tale of the high seas.

 

2. Where did the idea arise?

I am part of an author support group. We came together as writers needing shoulders. Things like social media, marketing, writing craft, etc. Through that, ideas started percolating. We have quite different styles and backgrounds, but the center of us all is the creative. And, ta-da, the M&P series was born.

 

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

For Sea Hunter, I traveled to Maine and Massachusetts, visiting shipyards and museums. I even spoke with an underwater archeology conservator. I will say the most fun was researching the post-war vernacular. The slang of the time was a hoot.

 

4. How long did you take to write the book?

From concept to publication was about a year. I had other projects I’d committed to and needed to finish. Once they were done, Sea Hunter’s first draft took about a month. The rewrites, editing, and formatting filled the rest of the year.

 

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?

My first book was independent and published in 2017. Since then, I’ve grown to nine books published or about to be. One is an anthology through The Wild Rose Press. My work is almost 50/50 between independent and traditional. My sun sign? Gemini.

I’m split between Fantasy (both epic and contemporary), Paranormal, Contemporary Romantic Suspense, and Mid-Grade Paranormal. I wonder if that reflects my sun sign?
