There is one trick to getting the research material you feel the reader needs to know to make the story clear. Use some kindof emotion to pin onto the bits of information. Make the hero or heroine have a driving need to know the information and you can do this inseveral ways. He can question other characters. He can head to the computer for the information or research at the library. Making the information nedessary to the character's life or livelihood and you can use this vehicle to get the words across.

I often use this devise in many ways. This is the good way to explain a culture, especially if the arriving person is new to the situation. Just make sure the character reacts emotionally tothis new information.

Check lists are always fun at least for me. So when I'm doing a final revision of my stories, I sit and check what I've done.  Though I cann this draft Words, it's more a general sense of what I've hoped to accomplish with my words.

Have I chosen a proper form. My books generally fall into the comedy form. There may be some elements of tragedy but these do not overwhelm the story. I'm not really a melodrama kind of writer. My characters are more average than those who seem to be epic characters. I envy writers who can create larger than normal characters.

Then I read for atmosphere. My books tend to be light but I have some that tend more to darkness. I try to find ways to turn what could be dark and tragic into something that's brighter, especially since many of my stories have medicine at the base.

Emotional tone is hard and sometimes means re-writing a scene or two to make sure I'm stirring the emotion I want the reader to experience. I try to use humor in some scened to make people laugh. I remember once reading a short story to my critique group and had us all laughing to hard I could barely finish. This was one time when I knew the emotional tone was on target.

The final thing I look at is the masculine or feminine focus of the scene. I often have to look at this very hard. When using a male point of view in a scene, I need to look at the way men act and react. The same goes for a female slanted scene.

Wednesday's Writer's Tip - Balancing Between Logic and Emotion #MFRWauthor #writing

 Every story has two sides and the way a writer approaches the story can be one of the analyst or the emotional. Finding a balance between can be difficult.

Are you the kind of person who likes the facts and pursues letting the reader know the facts, just the facts? This can make for a dry story and one that while organized from beginning to end that falls flat. The reader does need to know all of these things but you don't want to put them to sleep.

Are you the kind of person who revels in emotions. As you write, you forget about the sense of the story and focus on the emotions? You can lead the reader from the highs and lows of your characters emotional investment in the story but leave them confused. Many times the story becomes so convoluted the reader turns away in confusion.

Finding the balance between the two kinds of writing isn't learned in a day. If you tend to hone on the emotional side, you should take the time to make sure the story follows a logical path.  Making sure the characters' emotions are the right ones for them is important and reining these emotions to form patterns are important.

If you are one who loves the facts, you need to look at your facts and study how the characters are reacting. Long lists of facts may be accurate but you need to show what the characters are feeling as well.

So blending the two can be difficult. Learning how to balance things can be difficult but with practice you can learn to more from the pragmatic without falling into the sea of emotions. Writing a book isn't done in an instant so develop your critiquing nature and pamper your emotional reactions and those of your characters as well.
