Friday Ashlyn Mathews is Visiting and Talking about Who She Was Before #MFRWAuthor #Writer Nurse

What Were You Before

Day 1
1.       What were you before you became an author? Did this influence your choices as a writer?
Before I became an author, I dabbled in a lot of different jobs before getting into a career I love. I worked for the Department of Ecology picking up trash along the highways. That was my first job, a summer job. I also was a telemarketer for a insurance company, a lawn service company, and a funeral home. One of my more interesting jobs was that of a bank teller. When it comes to money, people can be very grouchy. All of my jobs prepared me for what I am currently, a registered nurse. I’ve been a nurse for twenty-two years. My main specialty was emergency room nursing. After I had my twin boys, the hubby and I realized we needed a better work-life balance. Working evenings and nights, every other weekend, and twelve hour shifts was tough. So, I transitioned to a position that isn’t focused on patient care but I am still able to use my “clinical brain.” Now, I help physicians with their documentation. I am currently the department lead.

All of the above didn’t influence my choice to become a writer. I became a writer because I wanted to write stories I wanted to read. I didn’t think I would be publishing them or become a romance author, but I enjoy the creative side of bringing a story to life on paper (word doc) as well as the administrative tasks such as looking over images for covers, formatting my eBook and print books and uploading them to the various vendor sites. Needing to also use my “clinical brain” in my day job, I don’t think writing will be a full time pursuit for me. Also, I have four boys to help put through college 😊.

2.       Are you genre specific or general? I don’t mean major genres but subdivisions or romance, mystery or paranormal.
I started off writing paranormal romance but realize I love writing contemporary romance. My love of contemporary romance then led to the more specific new adult, college romance, especially sports romance. And that in turn has led to my latest book release, a “mature” high school romance. I like writing about younger protagonists. There is so much to explore in regards to first love, insecurities, the uncertainty of the timing of falling in love, family dynamics, going off to college, etc.

3.       What is your latest release?
My latest book release is Beautiful Defiance. It’s a bully high school romance with an emphasis on romance rather than the bullying.

4.       What are you working on now?
I am currently working on a sports college romance that focuses on second chances and what happens when meeting your ex again, they are drastically different than when you first fell in love with them?

5.       Does your reading choices influence your choice of a writing career?
It does. In the beginning, I wrote paranormal romance because that’s what I was primarily reading. Now, I tend to read the genres and subgenres I write in. Readers have a certain expectation for each subgenre and I want to meet my readers’ expectations while also giving them something new. So, give them what they want but put a twist to it.

6. Where can we find you? You can find me at these places. Also, if a reader subscribes to my newsletter, they get my book, Scars to Your Beautiful, FREE.

Thursday's Fifth Scene from Romancing the Nurst #BWLAuthor #MFRAuthor #Romance #Medical

A slow smile curved Dr. Marshall's lips. His dark brown eyes appraised Ginny with the intensity of a scientist peering through a microscope. He held out a hand. She resisted the desire to thrust her hands behind her back. Instead, she held her arms stiffly at her sides.
"Ms. Barr, Blake Marshall. My father speaks highly of you." He rested the hand she had refused to touch on the counter that separated the nurses' station from the hall.
"Then I must thank him. He has been eagerly awaiting your arrival."
She held back a groan. Stilted conversation had never been her forte, but this morning and with this man, she'd become an expert. The knot edged into her throat. She gulped a breath. Why did the air between them smell of ozone as though a bolt of lightning had struck nearby?
She saw a question in his eyes and wondered if he remembered the night they'd met. She had called him twice and the third time had demanded he come to assess a patient. She would never forget because that had been the night Joey had left Manda. Angry thoughts swept her into the past.
"I insist you come immediately." She gripped the phone and listened to the sleep-fogged voice question her about the patient. "I won't hesitate to go over your head. It's been a half hour since my last call and an hour since the first. The patient's pain is constant and excruciating. I've elevated his leg and applied ice. A possible compartment syndrome is no joke."
Five minutes later, he strode into the patient's room. His rumpled, green scrubs didn't disguise his muscular physique. His dark eyes had flashed with anger. He eyed her nametag. "An agency nurse. What do you know about orthopedics?"
She bit back an angry response. She could have told him she had worked in orthopedics for five years and that in three semesters, she would have a Masters as a nurse practitioner with a focus on orthopedics. But she wouldn't. His question didn't deserve an answer."
"Just check the patient," she said.
Once he examined the young man's leg and discovered she'd been right, she had expected an apology. He'd given none, just split the cast, made a note on the chart and strode away.
Her memory of the past faded. She couldn't allow that incident to influence her. "Would you like a tour of the unit? The renovations were completed in May just before I took over."

For some great excerpts join the authors at #MFRWHooks Here  http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com  Mine is the fourth of the seduction series. A chance to handle old hurts/
.

Blurb:
“You’re next.”

Those words send Matt Blakefield fleeing his brother’s wedding. Marriage or even falling in love is the last of his desires. What he wants to learn is the identity of the owner of the house he wants to use as a make-over for the magazine he edits, Good Livin’. A fall rainstorm and a pine tree sends his motorcycle into a spin and into the arms of an old acquaintance, a girl he hurt in high school.

Cassie Moore has borrowed a cabin from one of her partners in a cardiology practice to come to terms with a broken engagement. The news came via an email. Her fiancée had married another woman just weeks before their scheduled marriage. The appearance of Matt at her door brings an old attraction into full bloom. She realizes love is lurking but he’s a player and she needs to forget the connection.

Is it possible that a weekend of love can become a lifetime?

2019 Book Hooks

Excerpt:

When Cassie reached the main room she popped the movie disc in place, filled the second flute with champagne and selected a truffle. As she savored the rich chocolate she draped the afghan over her shoulders and reached for the remote.
A rumble of thunder drowned the opening music of the movie. A loud crash made her jump. Had lightning struck nearby? She crossed to the window and turned on the yard lights.
A heap on the ground near the end of the driveway caught her attention. A movement made her realize she saw a body.  She grabbed a yellow slicker from a hook near the door, slipped on her sneakers and opened the door.
Moments later she clattered down the steps. Rain pelted her. She raced to the figure. As she drew closer she saw a man wearing a helmet and leather jacket. A motorcycle rested against the lone pine tree beside the drive.
Cassie crouched and felt for a carotid pulse. The steady beat against her fingers reassured her. When she grasped his shoulder he groaned. Her breath escaped on a sigh. She needed to see if any bones had been broken and get him out of the storm. While she was a doctor, hearts not bones were her specialty.
“Where do you hurt?”
He groaned. “Everywhere.”
“Can you move your arms and legs?”
He complied. This time his groan emerged louder and deeper.
“Try to sit up.”
Slowly he eased into a sitting position. “My bike?”
Cassie choked back a laugh. How like a man. “Before you worry about your wheels you need to get out of the rain and be checked for other injuries. Can you stand?”
“Probably.”
With her help he stood and swayed. He clutched Cassie’s shoulders. They nearly fell but she steadied him.
“Easy.” She put an arm around his waist. “Did you lose consciousness?”
“Don’t think so. Had the breath knocked out. Stunned a bit.” He drew a breath. “Must have been a deer.”
“What are you talking about?”
“The thing on the road. Big. Dark. Saw the creature in a flash of lightning. Couldn’t stop.”
Cassie peered toward the road. If he’d broadsided a deer, the animal would be on the road either dead or badly injured. She saw no sign of one. The motorcycle had crashed into the tree where the road curved. Had he been more than stunned? Was he drunk? Was she a fool for taking a stranger into the cabin?
She could leave him at her car and run inside for her keys. They could drive to town. Except she wasn’t dressed for going to town or for entertaining a guest.
“Where are we going?”
“To the cabin so I can check you for injuries.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
His deep voice held a quality that sent heat rushing through her veins. She faltered. Why the reaction? With all the recent developments she should avoid thinking of any man as attractive until she recovered from the pain of Tim’s rejection.
She helped the stranger through the wind driven rain to the roofed porch. The protection from the steady downpour was welcome. She opened the door and they stepped inside. Water beaded on her yellow slicker and his leather jacket. Pools collected on the slate foyer floor.
She shivered. “Cold.”
“Makes two of us.”
Cassie released her hold on him and dragged a metal kitchen chair with a padded seat and back into the entrance. She wished for her medical bag so she could do a complete assessment but the bag was at her apartment. While she couldn’t check his blood pressure or listen to his heart his pulse beat strong and steady. For the rest of the exam she could improvise.
“What year is it?” She asked the first question to check his mental status.
He answered with month, day and year.
“Where are you?”

Tuesday's Writer's Tip - More on Dialogue - Attributes and Read Aloud #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Writing #Dialogue

In dialogue the words must be spoken by someone. As we saw before too many lines of dialogue without letting the reader know who's up can be confusing. Another thing that doesn't confuse the reader into asking who and the ones who might explicit a "What." So keep it simple. Some time you read things like she said merrily. Maybe this tells a bit about the person's attitude but there are better ways to show this. I can remember reading a book once that many me stop and scratch my head. "Go home," he ejaculated. Really, I thought. Or the bit with the heroine speaking She said with a sputter and spit all over the table. Too much information. Think of ways to get the mood across. The words can show this as well as the attribution.

When in doubt or even not, reading the dialogue aloud like this is a play can really help you catch the rhythm. People's dialogue has a rhythm and each person's is a bit different. Do they use a lot of uhs or ers. Are the words stretched out. There are ways of showing this. If you read the bits of dialogue aloud, youcan show the rhythm on paper. For example. I want uh you uh leave. Says one thing. If someone says. Leave. Now. That says something quite different.  Reading aloud can also sshow you how the dialogue is perhaps too long and wandering or one that says words but has no meaning. So become an actor and become your characters.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing #Thoughts #Post Office

Meander 1 Reading A mishmash of reading this week. Books for a contest was first on the agenda. Then I'm upto and finished the 10th book in Cherryh's Foreigner series. Once again learned things I hadn't found the last time I read these books. Also read Carly Philips latest story. She's a former critique partner and I've watched her career grow and flourish. Also read a book by Christina Lynn Lambert and found the story well written and interesting. I haven't read many shifter books but she had a new take on this kind of story. Exciting and full of action and romance.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - About wht's happening to the post office makes me ill and the reason given for this action by a certain man I won't name makes me want to slap him upside the head. The post office keeps this country together. I use the post office, not as much as some people, but I pay my bills this way and I have horrid thoughts about being given late charges because my bills don't arrive on time. But I also think of the elderly who receive their SS checks in this manner and those who receive medicine. I would think someone I won;t mention could be sued for doing this. I'm not a lawyer but at least he could be shamed. The other thing is not having the mail won't keep me from voting and if I have to go to the voting place and should something happen to my health because of this, I would hope to consider a suit against, not the post office but to the man who dreamed this up in hopes this would keep people from voting.

Meander 2 - Writing. Three scenes to block in and the rough draft of Moon Rising Incal will be finished. There is one more draft of writing to do and then it's revise, revise, revise. I'm pretty much on schedule.

Saturday's Blurbs featuring Books by Caroline Clemmons #MFRWAuthor #

Desperate In Delaware (Yours Truly:The Lovelorn Book 11)

DESPERATE IN DELAWARE is my July release exclusively at Amazon and also enrolled in KU. The heroine’s first name is after my friend who just died, Mina Faye. Writing made me so sad that I had to use another name and then replace it after I’d finished. The heroine goes to Texas and marries—you guessed it—a rancher. Here’s the blurb:
I will wait no longer! Since my parents’ death I’ve been living with my sister’s family. I help care for her home and her adorable children. But, when will I have my own husband and children? There is not even one eligible man near my age in our small town. I hear the snickers and hurtful remarks—old maid, spinster, on the shelf. My cousin sent me a newspaper clipping from a Yours Truly: The Lovelorn’s column. Imagine my surprise when the letter to the columnist read as if I had written it. I’ll do it—I’ll follow the Lovelorn’s advice and change my location. I’ll go to Texas to visit my cousin. I refuse to watch my life disappear until I’m left with only regrets!
The Universal Amazon link is https://mybook.to/Mina
Released August 4 is a fun box set of 14 short stories for only 99 cents that includes USA and NYTimes and award winning authors. Each of the stories takes place on Last Chance Beach, an island wherever the reader wants it to be. The title is LAST CHANCE BEACH: SUMMER’S END. My story in this set is THE MAN IN GULL COTTAGE. I’m thrilled to be included with these amazing authors. This is also exclusively at Amazon and will be in KU. It will only be available for a short while!  Here’s the short blurb for my story:
Zara Webb has worked diligently to achieve her success. When she’s offered a major promotion that will change her lifestyle, she is given her two weeks’ vacation to decide her future. Should she chase success or follow her heart? Should she listen to the advice of the handsome beach bum from the cottage next door?
A release I enjoyed writing is AN AGENT FOR JUDITH, book 77 in the Pinkerton Matchmaker series. You can tell this is a popular series by the number. This is my third book in the series. The Universal Amazon link is https://mybook.to/Judith
The blurb is:
Judith has vowed to rescue her brother. Peyton is determined to protect his group. Together they must outwit a cruel and powerful man.

Judith McAdams’ brother in New Mexico hasn’t been heard from since a letter saying he was being bedeviled by a neighbor who wanted his ranch. Judith wires the marshal to check on her brother. When he refuses, she goes to the Pinkerton Detective Agency in Denver. There she learns that as a civilian she can’t accompany a Pinkerton agent on a case. However, if she marries a Pinkerton agent she can become an agent.
Peyton Knight values his job as a Pinkerton agent and is good at being a lawman. To keep the job he reluctantly agrees to a marriage of convenience with Judith. Together they will go to her brother’s rescue. Peyton is impressed with the beautiful and spirited redhead—if only she would admit he knows best. He even admires his mother-in-law but how did he end up with her on their trip? At least he’s found three men he trusts to help him rescue the brother.
Their journey is filled with obstacles. Will Judith’s brother still be alive by the time they reach him? When they resolve the ranch issue, will Judith and Peyton part ways?
Thanks for having me as your guest!

Friday Caroline Clemmons is Visiting and Talking About Plotter or Panster #MFRWAuthor #Caves #Ranches #Writing

1. Are you a panster or a plotter or perhaps a bit of both?
I’m basically a plotter and use my plotted outline as a map for writing. There are times when I take a detour but then I come back to the map.
2. Which comes first - characters or plot for you?
The characters come first. Usually they come to me in a scene as if I’m watching a movie. That may be the first time the main characters meet or it may be later in the story. Knowing the characters helps me plot the story.
3. What are you working on now? Is this a book in a current series or something totally new?
Right now I’m working on a story in the new Golden Legends series titled CHARLOTTE’S CHALLENGE. Charlotte Dunn is recently widowed and trying to save the ranch her husband worked so hard to build. She’s losing the battle until the hero, Brett Craig, shows up. He is injured and has amnesia. What she does to him is fun for me to write. I’m excited to be in this series with so many amazing authors. My book will release September 18 but the series has already started releases. I will have this western historical romance in September and then in a few months will have a western contemporary romance.
4. Do you have some kind of object or place that figures in most of your books? I use gems a lot, hospitals and caves.
I’ve used caves several times, including in my July release, DESPERATE IN DELAWARE. Probably I’m fascinated with them because they frighten me. I write a lot of rancher heroes because I like ranches and live where there are a lot of them.
5. Do you write everyday or just when the spirit hits?\
I write every day in my small office my family calls my “pink cave”. It’s my happy place. I prefer writing with my desktop while listening to classical music on Pandora.
6. Where can we find you?
Facebook Readers Group - Caroline’s Cuties https://www.facebook.com/groups/277082053015947/
Twitter  https://twitter.com/CarolinClemmons (no E in Caroline)

7. Who are your favorite authors? What about a book you’ve enjoyed?
I have way too many favorites to list just a few. I mostly read western romances. Right now, though, I’m reading and enjoying Erica Elliott’s MEDICINE AND MIRACLES IN THE HIGH DESERT.

Thursday's first scene #MFRWAuthor #BWLAuthor #Suspense #medical #Serial killer

He crouched in the cemetery that embraced three sides of the hillside parking lot across from Bradley Memorial Hospital. A massive family marker shielded him yet allowed him a clear view of the steps, the street and the door of the Emergency Room. Dark clouds slid across the surface of the moon. Lights, set high on poles around the perimeter of the lot sent finger shadows groping among the cars.

The watcher straightened and edged from behind the granite marker. White puffs of vapor from the shallow, rapid breaths he took coalesced around his face. He held his body as rigid as a tombstone. As he waited for the evening nurses to end their tour of duty and hurry across the street to their cars, his narrowed eyes focused on the brightly-lit hospital entrance. Every night for a week, he had watched while excitement and anticipation had circled like a swarm of hornets. Would she come tonight?
"I'll never leave you." When he was eight, Mommy had said the words that had become his litany. That broken promise had brought him here.
He stared at the steps. When would Susan come?
When Mommy was a patient, Susan had been her favorite nurse. He had liked Susan, too, but she hadn't stopped those other people from hurting Mommy. His shoulders tensed.
"I'll never leave you. They'll have to kill me first."
The night Mommy died was etched into his memories. On that dreadful night, he had begun his plan to make them pay.
Mommy would be unhappy about what he meant to do. To her, nurses were special and Susan more wonderful than the rest.
He rocked from his heels to his toes. The last time he had disobeyed, Mommy had threatened to tell everyone how bad he was. He had promised her he would be good. His hands curled into fists. Sometimes he wanted to feel the heat of accomplishment so much he felt sick.
He gulped a breath. Tonight the heat would blossom and he would feel powerful again.
Susan was like Mommy. She would tell. He chewed on his lower lip. Her death would free him to still the people who had hurt Mommy on that dreadful night.
    His smile became a grimace.
He had trusted Susan but she had failed to keep Mommy safe. Though he wished to see the others dead, Susan had to be first. He had laid his plans carefully, and while he had considered all the things that could go wrong, days had become weeks and then months.
The bright lights across the street caught his attention and stirred his hopes. She had to come tonight. He wanted to be free.

2019 Book Hooks

Excerpt:
Mark Blakefield sat behind the desk in his office. He listened to his senior writer describe his New England vacation. “Found the Green Mountain Inn on our last day of exploring places for a feature in Good Travelin’.
     “Impressive was it?” Mark asked.
“Owned by a single mom. Been in her family for generations. Lots of history. An inn for all seasons. Fabulous food. Scenic vistas. Spring, leaf peeping, lake with boats, fishing, hike and riding trails. Snapped a bunch of photos.” He slid a stack across the desk. “Have a look. Owner’s easy on the eyes.”
Mark stared at the stack. Why did Jonas insist on using a camera with film when phones and digital cameras were available? Mark tapped the desk. “What did your wife say?”
The older man winked. “She liked the idea of you heading there.”
Mark rolled his eyes. “The pair of you on another match-making junket?”
Jonas shrugged. “She thought you would like the lady.”
“I’ll check the photos and see if the place deserves a feature.”
“And I’ll wait to hear.” Jonas strolled to the door.
Mark turned the photos over one by one. The leaves on the hillside had just begun to turn. Another showed a lake shimmering in the sunlight. He studied several shots of a large inn. Another showed a garden, a two story house and several cottages. Buried near the end of the stack he found a picture of a boy around nine or ten mugging for the camera. He stared at the next picture. A woman stood beside the boy. Mark’s jaw clenched.
“Damn her.” What was Christa Parsons doing at this inn? Mark opened his laptop and started a search for directions. Was the woman really Christa? Could he be mistaken? Had he forgotten what she looked like? Not possible. Her face and her body were engraved in all his cells. He printed the directions. With the photo of the boy in one hand and his laptop in the other he strode to the door. He stopped at his secretary’s desk. “I’ll be out of town for several days. Maybe a week.”
“Where should I say you are?”
“Just a phone call, a text or an email away.”
He didn’t wait for the elevator but took the stairs to the basement parking garage. He sped from his spot into a traffic nightmare. Honking horns, screeching brakes and raised fists and middle fingers sent him on his way until he reached the saner major highway. When he reached his condo he felt as if he’d fought a war. He dashed inside, packed and settled at the kitchen table. After zapping a frozen burger he headed to the living room and removed a picture form the photo album on the coffee table.

Back in the kitchen he stared at the two pictures. Had to be. Why hadn’t she told him? He intended to learn the answer to that and to a dozen other questions. He tucked the photographs in his jacket pocket, grabbed a six pack and a tin of cookies. With the burger in a hand he loaded everything in the trunk of his silver sports’ car. He slid behind the wheel. Christa Parsons had some explaining to do.
