Books by Kim McMahill are featured on Saturday's Blurbs #MFRWAuthor #Beartooth Mountain #A Dose of Danger #Big Horn Storm #mountains #romance

Give the blurbs and buy marks for 3 of your books.

I’ve included blurbs from my soon-to-be-released novel along with two others. The common thread in these three novels is that all are set in different fictitious, mountain locations in northern Wyoming. Even though the settings are products of my imagination, I’ve relied on my extensive knowledge of this part of the country to make the scenes believable.

Refuge from the World (The Beartooth Chronicles, Book 1)

Ashley McPhee arrived in Beartooth with her mom, Sara, when she was three years old. Ever since Ash can remember, life has been simple and peaceful. She enjoyed a carefree childhood, tending honey bees with her mom and spending time with her best friend, Caleb Solomon. But, life in their idyllic mountaintop community is changing.

After learning of the government’s plan to use a geoengineering process to cool the planet, Ash and Caleb realize they need to step up and take an active role in the community. Along with fear for how the process might impact their food supply, Ash learns her mom’s health is failing.

Sara doesn’t want Ash to face an uncertain future alone and nudges her and Caleb into marriage. Even though they have known each other most of their lives, Ash and Caleb’s relationship has changed drastically in a short period of time. They embrace the challenges of learning about each other, dealing with tragedy and grief, protecting their community from deadly predators and ruthless neighbors, and experiencing epic adventures, while trying to find solutions to a rapidly changing environment and deteriorating world.

Refuge from the World will be available from your favorite on-line book retailer soon. In the meantime, book details are available on the publisher’s website at https://www.fireandiceya.com/authors/kimmcmahill/bear1.html

A Dose of Danger (Risky Research Series, Book 1)

When researcher Grace Talbot and her team discover a possible solution for weight loss, they are targeted by a group dedicated to controlling the diet product industry worth billions. Her unsanctioned testing methods bring tragedy to the family ranch and the attention of the local sheriff’s deputy. With her colleagues either dead, missing, or on the run she soon realizes she must trust the deputy with her life, but can she trust him with her heart?

Kim McMahill is visiting and talking about being a Panster or a Plotter #MFRWAuthor #panster #Plotter #writing #Beartooth Mountain

1. Are you a panster or a plotter or perhaps a bit of both?

I’m a little of both. For my latest project, The Beartooth Chronicles, there are a lot of characters and the series unfolds over about five years, so it is essential to keep the timeline straight and introduce events that may not play out for another book or two, so I’ve had to plot out the storyline a little more than usual.

2. Which comes first - characters or plot for you?

Usually the plot comes first, though the main character in The Beartooth Chronicles definitely drives the story.

3. What are you working on now? Is this a book in a current series or something totally new?

I’ve finished the first four novels in The Beartooth Chronicles. Book 1, Refuge from the World will be released in mid-March. The next three novels in the series will be released every four to five months thereafter. I just finished the first round of edits for book 2, Above the Abyss. In between meeting editing deadlines, I’m writing book 5.

4. Do you have some kind of object or place that figures in most of your books? I use gems a lot, hospitals and caves.

Locations for my books are generally based on someplace I’ve been that has made an impact on me. Sometimes it’s places I’ve traveled to, but my latest series is set in the Beartooth Mountains decades in the future. Currently the road over the pass is only open from Memorial Day to around October. In the series, temperatures have warmed around the planet, melting all of the ice and snow, raising sea levels. The new climate in Beartooth no longer receives snow, and the population in the U.S. is being pushed to higher elevations.

5. Do you write every day or just when the spirit hits?\

I generally write every day. Even if I’m not in the mood to work on a novel, I also publish Kindle Vella episodes, update my social media, or work on marketing and promotional tasks.

7. Who are your favorite authors? What about a book you’ve enjoyed?

James Rollins, Suzanne Collins, and Dan Brown. I love books that take me on an adventure or to a new place. I enjoy everything from romantic suspense to dystopian.

Join Kim McMahill as she talka about being a Panster or a Plotter #MFRWAuthor #Plotter #Panster #Plot #Characters

1. Are you a panster or a plotter or perhaps a bit of both? I’m definitely a bit of both. If the plot is exceptionally complex, I will plot. For example, in Shrouded in Secrets, I outlined most of the chapters, had a cork board with character profiles and other pertinent information, and used a map with pushpins and yarn to find geographic intersections. For the Risky Research Series as a whole, I predetermined how many books in the series, the title of each book, and which piece of the diet and nutrition industry would be highlighted in each novel. But the scenes and stories that I have the most fun writing are those where I can just sit down at the keyboard and let the characters and action inspire me to write off the cuff.

2. Which comes first - characters or plot for you? It varies. In Big Horn Storm, I had to have a cowboy named Deuce, and I wrote the story for him. In the Risky Research Series and several other novels, I had an idea for the stories and created the characters to pull off the action, adventure, and suspense.

3. What are you working on now? Is this a book in a current series or something totally new? I just released the fourth novel in the Risky Research Series, A Measure of Madness, and I’m currently working on the fifth and final installment, A Recipe for Revenge.

4. Do you have some kind of object or place that figures in most of your books? I use gems a lot, hospitals and caves. The Risky Research Series is all about the diet product, nutrition, and fitness industries and the science supporting those. However, most of my novels are more action/adventure based and I love remote unforgiving natural environments which adds an additional obstacle that the characters must overcome for success and a happily-ever-after ending.

5. Do you write everyday or just when the spirit hits? I can’t force creative writing. I just have to feel it. I do generally spend time everyday on various marketing projects like writing and programming blogs, and putting content on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, but novel writing comes more in spurts.

7. Who are your favorite authors? What about a book you’ve enjoyed? I have read every book in Clive Cussler’s Dirk Pitt series. I don’t know if his son will continue with that series or not since Mr. Cussler’s passing, so I’ve started reading his other work. I also love James Rollins and Dan Brown. The element all these authors have in common is great adventures, amazing locations, and a gift for creating suspense.

Friday Kim McMahill is visiting. Talking about Who She Was Before #MFRWAuthor #Suspense #National Park Service #Adventure #Suspense

What were you in life before you became a writer? Did this influence your choices as a writer? I have, and still do, work for the National Park Service. When my husband and I first started out, he would be gone for up to 21 days at a time fighting wildfires. We lived in a cabin with no phone or television, so I took the opportunity to get all the stories in my head down on paper, and have never looked back.
Are you genre specific or general? I’m fairly genre specific in that I primarily write adventure/suspense, but some books can be further defined as western, dystopian, and crime fiction.
What is your latest release? My latest release is A Foundation of Fear, the third novel in the Risky Research Series.
What am I working on now? I recently submitted the fourth novel in the series, A Measure of Madness to my publisher. While I wait to hear back, I’m sketching out the plan for book five.
Did your reading influence your choice of a writing career? Yes, I’ve always loved to read, and I primarily only watch movies, in the adventure and suspense genres. My favorite authors are James Rollins and Clive Cussler (I particularly love the Dirk Pitt series).
