Heroes, Heroines, Villains. Which are your favorite to write?

I prefer to write a strong sassy female lead. Though I do enjoy a wicked villain, I still prefer to show the story from the heroine’s point of view. I also like to show the conflict between two strong leads and how they learn to work together and accept each other and the risks they take.

 

Heroes. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or plain imagination create the man you want every reader to love? Do they come before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?

Yes. My characters come from all of those situations. Sometimes, it’s what the female lead needs. Sometimes it’s a stereotype male. It just depends on the story and my female lead.

 

 

Heroines. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or imagination create the woman you want the reader to root for? Do they appear before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?

It depends on the story. I think the female lead usually comes to me first but there are times she reveals herself slowly to me.

 

Your favorite book?

I don’t have a favorite book – or I should say I couldn’t pick a favorite book until you threatened bodily harm.  I love books which surprise me or which keep me so engaged, I’m grumpy when I’m interrupted or can’t finish it in one sitting.

 

 

5. Villains or villainesses or an antagonist, since they don’t always have to be the bad guy or girl. They can be a person opposed to the hero’s or heroine’s obtaining their goal. How do you choose one? How do you make them human?

I’m not a planner so I don’t regularly plan my stories or my characters. I develop them as I go. I let the characters tell me their stories. Now in some cases a bad guy / girl will appear. Sometimes, it’s someone specific and sometimes they will surprise you.

 

What is your latest release? Who is the hero, heroine and or the villain?

My latest release is Ariana. It’s the third book in the Dragon Descendant series. In the first two books we had reluctant mates. They didn’t want to be together. In this one, she knows her mate but he left her ten years ago.  She’s mourned for him and missed him. She didn’t understand why he left. When he returns, they have to hash it out. It’s not a pretty story. Don’t worry – they get their HEA but they have to work through some things.

 

Ariana has grown up and become a woman. She’s stronger for him having left her though it took her a long time to get there. She’s kind and loving but she’s also got a backbone. 

 

Winnod wanders their world climbing different mountains. He’s always listening for the dragons but he’s mourning. He grew up but isn’t in a good place.

 

The villain in this book is radical and ineffective. But there’s a bigger bad which you won’t find out about until the final book Bryony.

 

When I wrote this book I intended it to be all from her point of view with Winnod being the bad guy for abandoning her but Winnod stepped up and said – hey now, I’ve got my side of things. I think it made the book better.

 

 

7. What are you working on now?

I almost never work on one project at a time – at least in the beginning stages. I’m writing the second book in the sacrificed series (Ava M Taylor pen name) Surrendered to the Sea Demon.  It’s bouncing around in my head and I need to get it down on paper.

 

I’m also working on a new series – Alien Alliance (also and Ava M Taylor series).  These books will be closely tied to each other and I plan to release them in a shorter time frame.  The first book is done but I have a couple more scenes to add to it. The more I think on this series, the more I feel the first one needs a tweak here and there.  The first book is about her wanting a mate and him not wanting her – until he realizes how much he’s messed up. By the time he realizes, she’s reached a point where she doesn’t trust her own emotions or his. The second book will be about him proving himself and her learning to trust herself and him.  The third in the trilogy will be about them learning to work together and combine their strength to… well I can’t tell you the ultimate goal – it gives away too much.

Day 1

 

1. Are you a panster or a plotter or perhaps a bit of both?  I am a panster. I don't plan out anything. I sit down and start typing. Occasionally, I will type out the next few scenes in my story but generally I just type what . 

 

2. Which comes first - characters or plot for you?  It varies. Scenes or characters are usually the start for me. I might see a scene in my head or I could be focused on the character. For Fractured, I knew I was writing a dark romance so I started with a scene. I started with a prison planet with these bad being which are so dangerous. I wanted to build a scene with contrasts. Men working their way through what appears to be a beautiful natural location.   

 

3. What are you working on now? Is this a book in a current series or something totally new?  I've got two series I'm working on. Sacrificed and another one - which I don't have a solid name for yet. Sacrificed to the Sea Monster comes out in December. The second book needs to come out of my head. The other one, I've written the first book and have two more to write. It's an alien story where the humans are trying to negotiate with the T'mbarians. So they bring women who are to be mates wiht T'mbarian males. P'lar had a mate who died and didn't want another mate. Janine hated her life on Earth. She is looking for love but doesn't find it. 

 

 

4. Do you have some kind of object or place that figures in most of your books? I use gems a lot, hospitals and caves.  Not in every story, I like to feature local geography when I can. Wild Magic series has feature. Paranormal Investigators is set in Milwaukee.  

 

5. Do you write everyday or just when the spirit hits? I go in cycles. Usually I do editing for a time and then I'll write for a time and sometimes I'll read for a bit.

7. Who are your favorite authors? What about a book you’ve enjoyed?   I have never been able to narrow my favorite authors to one. Piers Anthony, Anne McCaffery, JD Robb / Nora Roberts, Suzanne Brockmann, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Shakespeare... What I look for is a story which makes me forget everything else and focus on the story. If the real world drops away, the book has done what it's supposed to.

  We all know there are six elements of fiction. Who, What, When, Where, Why and How. I believe the first five lead to the sixth which for me is plot. What's your take on this?

 

For me, it’s usually a scene or a person who I start with – most often a scene. Things come to me in a flash of inspiration and I take it from there. Sometimes it’s a situation and sometimes it’s a character. For the Dragon Descendant series, once I used a scene I’d written for a group but it was too short so I expanded it.  The cover came next and from there it expanded into a short story.  For the subsequent short stories, the characters came to me as the world was already set up. So my top two would be who and where. Often the what and why show up later sometimes at almost the end of the book. The how of a story – this unfolds as I write.

 

 

How do you create your characters? Do you have a specific method?

 

My method is to listen to my characters and write them the way they tell me to or else.  I always say my characters tell me the story. Marelo was stubborn but Bandor told me all about his love and how much he needed his mate. For Solana it was the opposite. Solana told me how much she loved the dragons and how difficult it was for her to cope with her fated mate to be so standoffish. Ariana and Winnod gave me a mix. Ariana told me of her heartbreak and her loneliness after Winnod ran away from their early connection. Winnod told me about how much he loved her even when he knew he shouldn’t. I felt his desperation for even a scent of her when he was in the mountains. With the last book, the mates found each other but Zonlet came through first with his worry and his concerns. He wanted her to have play time but worried about her impulsiveness. When they experience a difficulty, it shocks Bryony and from there, she spoke with me more than Zonlet.

 

 

2. Does your beginning arrive fully developed or do you spend a lot of time making the right approach to scene 1?

 

My openings can be as little as a one liner or as long as a chapter. With the Dragon Descendant series, I didn’t start out to write the final three. I’d written Marelo and planned to write the other three later – like next year later but they sparked something in me and one led into the next and so on.  Ironically I kept saying to myself – oh I’ll just putter on the story tonight before I go back to the current WIP.  Every night I’d share how I wrote a couple thousand words.  Once I got started, the words tumbled out as if I’d opened a faucet on full.   

 

3. Do you know how the story will end before you begin? In a general way or a specific one?

Almost never. I rarely see the end except in a few cases. When I wrote my Wayfarer series, I saw the last four books in a big overview and as I wrote each one the ending became really clear.  With the Dragon Descendant series, I didn’t see the endings of the short stories. I knew a little on how the series would end but it was broad strokes. When it came to Bryony, I got to a point where I knew things had to change and then an idea popped and I knew how it would end. Once I did, I realized I’d have to go back and add hints of it to the stories.

 

 

4. Do you choose settings you know or do you have books of settings and plans of houses sitting around?

Because I write a lot in scifi and fantasy most of what I do is world building. If it’s a new world or new species, I have to create all of it from scratch. I’ve had to describe ships and try to avoid what has already been used. In Dragon Descendant stories, I had to create a whole planet and describe how the people were different from each other and why. Each location becomes a balance between how much do I describe and how much do I let the reader make up what they imagine.  

 

 

 

 

5. Where do you do your research? On line or from books?

 

My research is generally online or with people who have experience with the topic. My standard is to work on my laptop for writing and use my cell phone to go in and Google for information. However, there are some topics which I know someone who can explain things to me better than what I read on the Internet. I use them shamelessly. When I needed to set up the financial part of an entire race, I texted a friend who was an accountant (Wayfarer series). Recently I worked on a shifter series (Puma Pride due out next July), I needed information on genetics. My youngest daughter has participated in genetic research so I called her.  Many conversations later, I believe I came up with something believable but not too sciency. 

          

 

6. Are you a draft writer or do you revise as you go along and why? Do you sketch out your plot or do you let the characters develop the route to the end?

 

My process is to write and then the next time I go in, I’ll read over what I wrote last time (sometimes I reread the whole thing) and edit and adjust as I go.  Sometimes this means I spend more time editing/reading than writing. It depends on how much of a gap there is between writing sessions as I often work on multiple projects at a time.

1. What were you before you became an author? Did this influence your choices as a writer? I knew at eight I wanted to be a writer. I didn’t seriously start writing until I was in my late 30s. Between eight and nearly forty, I had a lot of life experience which offers me lots to draw from when I write.

 

2. Are you genre specific or general? I don’t mean major genres but subdivisions or romance, mystery or paranormal.  I write where my characters take me generally.  I write in scifi romance, fantasy romance, paranormal, contemporary for fiction but I’ve got some poetry books, a self-help book, and a lot of crochet patterns.

 

3. What is your latest release?

Marelo is a sweet fantasy romance which involve a race which evolved from dragons but they are still living with dragons – when they choose to reveal themselves. It comes out April 4 and is a short story.

 

4. What are you working on now?

This is a complicated answer for me. I started self-publishing in 2014 and while I love the stories, I’ve been progressively updating all my books with new edits and new covers.  I have a few that I’m currently working on. 

 

In addition to that, I have a shifter story which involves a mystery of why humans are killing shifters and kidnapping the females. I have a few sequels I’m working on. For one I need a timeline for the second book in order to move forward with the third and final book. 

 

I just finished writing a sequel to Royal Undercover.  This one took me by surprise. I planned to write the sequel next year but the beginning popped in my head and I couldn’t stop writing it.

 

5. Does your reading choices influence your choice of a writing career?

I read many genre which I don’t write in. Ultimately I love a good story and hope that I create some of those good stories.
