It’s always a pleasure to come back to Eclectic Writer. As we’re
in the holiday season I thought I’d talk about some of my books that include
Christmas and/or New Year’s storylines. Today, that’s Court Me, Cowboy. This short contemporary romance is the first book
I sold, but because of the holiday timing it became my second novel in print.

2. Where did the idea arise?
As many of my books do, this one started with a character. The
initial image of my hero was so vivid it stayed with me through the writing of
the entire story, and it actually became the opening of the book:
One day soon, he'd get rid of this wedding
ring.
Gabe Miller tossed the gold circle into the air
and snatched it back again, trying not to think of the woman who'd slipped it
onto his left hand, third finger. Trying not to think of what she'd had
inscribed inside.

Ha. What a crock. Forever hadn't
lasted but three short weeks.
Scowling, he shoved the band into the
velvet-lined jeweler's box and slid it back beneath the stack of flannel shirts
in the dresser drawer. Call him a dumb cowboy, but it'd taken his own wife's
desertion to finally get the message rammed into his thick skull:
Never trust a woman.
Of course, this being a romance, Gabe meets up with that same
woman again and winds up in just as much trouble the second time around. ;)
3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be
distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?
Not a lot of research, and I was able to stay on point. The info
on ranch life included in the story is filtered throughout the book.
4. How long did you take to write the book?
It’s been a while, but I’d say probably about eight or nine months.
At the time I was unpublished with no contract on the horizon, so I had time to
play with it. And I felt strongly that this book was perfect for short category
romance, so I wanted to make the manuscript as clean as possible coming out of
the gate.
5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing?
I always smile when I’m asked this question because I love to
think back to those days. I started writing—in crayon—when I was about six, before
I could print very well and definitely couldn’t spell much.
6. Do you write in a number of genres of stick to one?
I’m interested in a few and have drafted some stories in
different genres, including romantic suspense and cozy mystery. But my focus so
far has stayed on short contemporary romance.

1. Tell me
about your latest release or the book you wish to feature? Genre?
The book I’d like to feature is my
Christmas time travel romance novella, The Christmas Kiss. It tells the story
of Annabelle O’Sullivan, a governess, who accidently goes through a
crack in time and ends up in modern day Vermont with no idea how she got there,
how to get home or how to survive in this strange time.
2. Where did the idea arise?
I was going through the Downton
Abby series for the umpteenth time and I wanted to do a story about someone
from 1925 coming to our time. The rest of the story just flowed from there.
3. How much research was involved?
Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more
thing?
I researched what things were like
in 1925, from life in a manor house to the popular music and books of the time.
I really got lost in the fashions and had to drag myself away.
4. How long did you take to write
the book?
It took a little over two months
to write the book.
5. Now a bit about you. How long
have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?
I’ve been writing since elementary
school, short stories and poems. My first book was published in 2014. My sun
sign is Cancer.
6. Do you write in a number of
genres of stick to one?
I write time travel romance,
paranormal romance, futuristic romance, supernatural suspense, and I’m
currently working on romantic suspense.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing #Thoughts
Meander 1 - Reading - Finished reading The Body in Room 103 by John Robichard - Don't know how I missed this months ago when it came out but I enjoyed this mystery that takes place in WWII in Halifax, Canada. The twists and turns were well done and though the villain had his say in the book, the work it took to find him was well done. Also have been reading Mary Jo Putney. At present reading River of Fire and I think this is one of my favorite Fallen Angels book. Not sure why but perhaps since it's about the creative process may be the reason.
Meander 2 - Thoughts - Christmas day has come and gone and a short visit from three of my grandchildren was fun. Watching them opening their stockings is fun. Andrew just opens them and is thrilled by the spicy sauces he received. Emma looks at everything and them begins to explore them, opening each thing and wanting to play games. Sydney is slow and careful and considerd each present one at a time. Ashley keeps looking at then and rather combines Emma's curiosity and Sydney's careful exploration. Fun to watch. Sure hope the other grandchildren recieve their packages soon. Mailed on December 11th and are still in transport. I've said my piece to people about the man who took over the Postal Service to others and find the man is incompetent, immaterial and stupid. Lots of phone calls and did some talking about people's not understanding the bills that were passed by Congress and ignored or vetoed by the man currently in Florida playing golf.
Meander 3 - Writing - Am blocking in Chapter 7 and have a little glitch there but will continue and repair when all is done and I reach the end. Then it will be on to Incal and then to Committee of Angels that I found the prologue and the outling.

Where
did the idea arise?
Sylvia McDaniel came up with premise of five
friends from Charlotte who left the devastation of their hometown. In 1866,
they traveled west as mail-order brides. The first year the books were released
was 2018 but I didn’t join the series until book 11 in 2019.

How much
research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to
look at just one more thing?
A map of the town was included in the series
files. Obviously research was involved. For instance, I needed to know the
winter temperatures, how the town would look, were there Native Americans, did
the residents use wood or coal to heat their homes? There’s always one
more thing. Even if thirty minutes of reading results in using only one
sentence, an author has to be certain what he/she writes is credible.

How long
did you take to write the book?
I spent six weeks on this one. That’s a
little longer than necessary but I had the flu. Not Covid, just ordinary flu
that knocked me around for a week. Plus, knowing I had plenty of time, I took
longer to finish the book.

Now a
bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?
In reverse order, I’m a Virgo born on
September 16 (Not saying what year). I sold my first book to Kensington in 1998
and started self-publishing in 2012. I’ve been making up stories since I was
about five or six. They usually involved a beautiful princess, a handsome
prince, and a castle and were illustrated by crayon. Fortunately, I know great
cover designers now—no crayons.

Do you
write in a number of genres or stick to one?
Most of my books are historical western romances
but I also write contemporary western romance, time travel, and mystery. One of
the great things about being independent is that you can write what you wish
when you wish.
