My Hitching Post Hotel series features a matchmaking grandpa trying to get his granddaughters wed. The holiday story is The Lawman’s Christmas Proposal:

And the last book for today is One Week to Win Her Boss. This is one of two stories set in the small town of Snowflake Valley, where the holidays are celebrated 365 days of the year. The heroines are self-described as the “bad-luck Barnett sisters” since they’ve got horror stories about past relationships:

1. Tell me about the book you wish to feature? Genre?

 

It’s always a pleasure to come back to Eclectic Writer. As we’re in the holiday season I thought I’d talk about some of my books that include Christmas and/or New Year’s storylines. Today, that’s Court Me, Cowboy. This short contemporary romance is the first book I sold, but because of the holiday timing it became my second novel in print.

2. Where did the idea arise?

 

As many of my books do, this one started with a character. The initial image of my hero was so vivid it stayed with me through the writing of the entire story, and it actually became the opening of the book:

 

One day soon, he'd get rid of this wedding ring.

Gabe Miller tossed the gold circle into the air and snatched it back again, trying not to think of the woman who'd slipped it onto his left hand, third finger. Trying not to think of what she'd had inscribed inside.

     Ha. What a crock. Forever hadn't lasted but three short weeks.

Scowling, he shoved the band into the velvet-lined jeweler's box and slid it back beneath the stack of flannel shirts in the dresser drawer. Call him a dumb cowboy, but it'd taken his own wife's desertion to finally get the message rammed into his thick skull:

Never trust a woman.

 

Of course, this being a romance, Gabe meets up with that same woman again and winds up in just as much trouble the second time around. ;)

 

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

 

Not a lot of research, and I was able to stay on point. The info on ranch life included in the story is filtered throughout the book.

 

4. How long did you take to write the book?

 

It’s been a while, but I’d say probably about eight or nine months. At the time I was unpublished with no contract on the horizon, so I had time to play with it. And I felt strongly that this book was perfect for short category romance, so I wanted to make the manuscript as clean as possible coming out of the gate.

 

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing?

 

I always smile when I’m asked this question because I love to think back to those days. I started writing—in crayon—when I was about six, before I could print very well and definitely couldn’t spell much.

 

6. Do you write in a number of genres of stick to one?

 

I’m interested in a few and have drafted some stories in different genres, including romantic suspense and cozy mystery. But my focus so far has stayed on short contemporary romance.

1. Tell me about the book you wish to feature? Genre?

 

All my books are short, sweet, contemporary romances on the lower end of the sensuality scale. On my visit here at Eclectic Writer last month, I’d talked about some of my first-in-series books, including A Rancher’s Pride, book one in the Flagman’s Folly series. Today I’d like to share a bit about book two in that series, The Rodeo Man’s Daughter.

 

Though I’ve said it before, I’m saying it again: I love all my characters. This book felt extra-special to write, though, as the hero and heroine are part of one of my all-time favorite romance tropes, the reunion story. (More on that below.) And to top things off, there’s a young secondary character who completely stole my heart and readers’ hearts as well.

When Caleb Cantrell left home as a dirt-poor teenager, he never thought he’d return as a wealthy rodeo star. As a matter of fact, he didn’t think he’d return at all. The accident changed all that. 2. Where did the idea arise?

 

As I mentioned above, reunion stories are some of my favorites, and that’s true whether I’m reading or writing them. In this case, the added layer of a high-school sweetheart story became the cherry on my literary ice cream sundae.

 

The hero of this book came to me first, with Caleb walking into my imagination as a full-fledged tortured hero, a man who had everything he could possibly want but lost it. Or so he thinks. Sometime what we believe we want isn’t what we’re meant to have at all, and Caleb has a few surprises in store on the way to that happy-ever-after.

 

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

 

This book didn’t require a lot of research. While looking for the details I did need to verify, I managed to stay on point. As usual my goal was to weave in the bits and pieces so that—fingers crossed—they fit seamlessly into the plot.

 

4. How long did you take to write the book?

 

I usually spend about three months on multiple drafts, then another month or so for edits and full reads. That was the case this time around, although I gave those final stages a bit more time as I was tying together details from the connected books before and after it.

 

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing?

 

For as long as I can remember! I wrote my first stories in crayon when I was five. At the time, I had a fairly good vocabulary for my same-age audience but limited spelling skills. LOL

 

In fourth grade, I illustrated the cover of my first “published” short story. And in eighth grade, I typed my first full-length novel on my grandpa’s ancient Underwood typewriter. This was a teen mystery—with a touch of romance, of course!

 

6. Do you write in a number of genres of stick to one?

 

I was first published in short fiction, both romance and mystery. Currently, I’m focused on contemporary romance novels on the sweet- to lower-sensuality scale. My books all lean toward family, quirky characters, small towns, and lots of reader-fave romance tropes, including those mentioned above.

A Rancher’s Pride is a sweet, short contemporary romance set in a small Southwestern town. It originally stood alone, but the characters and setting drew readers in, and three other books followed, becoming the Flagman’s Folly series.

 

Confession time: I love all the books I’ve written, all the heroes and heroines and their relatives and friends, but have to admit A Rancher’s Pride holds a special place in my heart.

 

The story opens with a solitary rancher’s first meeting with the daughter he never knew he had. Sam immediately falls for four-year-old Becky, who should have been calling him “Daddy” long ago. The appearance of Becky’s beloved Aunt Kayla threatens his chances of getting custody as Becky has been deaf from birth, and while Kayla is a sign language teacher who helped raise her niece, Sam can’t communicate with his own child.

2. Where did the idea arise?

 

I’ve always loved books and knew I’d be a writer someday, and I’ve also always been fascinated by language. After receiving a degree in English, I went on for a second degree in American Sign Language, then settled down into a happy home in writing romance. A few books down the road, an idea came to me that blended all my interests.

 

When my hero, Sam, began speaking to me, it instantly became clear he was facing big trouble. See, thanks to a troubled past, he’s a loner and likes it that way. So to break him out of his shell, I knew somebody was going to have to break his heart.

 

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

 

Not a lot of research with this book. I’d already studied American Sign Language and did use some of it throughout the story—and I still get reader mail about the puppy scene. ;-) But whether I’m looking at language or backstory or technical “stuff,” my goals are to make sure it’s important to the story, filter in the necessary details, and take care that it meshes smoothly into the plot.

 

4. How long did you take to write the book?

 

That’s hard to say as I was working simultaneously on another book and a separate proposal.  But this fell close to what my usual time frame had been, three months give or take, and then another month or so for final read-through and edits.

 

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing?

 

Forever, I think! Really, I first started creating stories around the age of five, even though I couldn’t actually spell much of anything to write them down. My debut “published” short story was a limited edition of one, with an illustrated-by-author cover. This came out when I was in the fourth grade. Other stories followed, then in eighth grade I wrote my first full-length novel, a teen mystery with a romance subplot.

 

6. Do you write in a number of genres of stick to one?

 

I started out submitting short stories and was published in both mystery and romance. Now I’m focused on writing contemporary romance novels with sweet- to lower-sensuality levels. All my books are big on family, quirky characters, and small-town settings and values.

Tell me about your Christmas series. Genre?

 

The Snowflake Valley books are sweet romances set in a small tourist town that’s all about Christmas, all year-‘round. Two books in the series have already been published, and I’m currently working on book three. Each story features one of the “bad-luck” Barnett sisters, who all have had terrible luck in relationships. I loved writing these books and hope your readers will check them out!  My publisher is offering the first book in the series for $.99 from November 9 thru November 16.

 

In this story, Snowbound with Mr. Wrong, the hero and heroine first met at a children’s Christmas party in Snowflake Valley while playing Santa and his elf. They began dating but eventually broke up. As the book opens, they’re reunited after they agree to help out again this year—although neither knows the other’s going to be there. Once they discover the deception, they want only to put space between them. Instead, they find themselves snowbound at the mountain lodge with three very upset kids.

 

 

Where did the idea arise?

 

I LOVE the holiday season. The cold and snow, not so much. :) But writing about it is another story. . . or several. The setting of Snowflake Valley came to mind first, but immediately after, the characters popped into my mind. Questions soon followed. What could be worse than having the three eldest sisters in one family hit a run of bad luck in their romantic relationships? Well, how about each sister being reunited with her ex? Or in the case of book two, having the heroine’s out-of-state boss show up at the worst possible time? Those questions kicked off my imagination, and—excuse the pun—things just snowballed from there.

 

 

How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

 

Because of the holiday setting and themes, I didn’t need to do a lot of research. But I did get to celebrate Christmas early! Because I’d started writing the series in the spring, my mind wasn’t quite ready for the holidays. So I decorated my office with some of our Christmas ornaments, played carols while cleaning house (I can’t write to music with lyrics), and even baked Christmas cookies a time or two.

 

Along with the Snowflake Valley series, I have another Christmas book that’s part of my ongoing Hitching Post Hotel series, and I used the same mood-setting enhancements while writing that book. Did I say how much I love the holiday season? :)

 

 

How long did you take to write the books?

 

With the first two Snowflake Valley books, I’d say it took six months or so. I didn’t write them simultaneously but did plot them all before I began writing the first book. This really helped with revising and adding details from book to book.

 

 

Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing?

 

Technically, since the age of five, although my “writing” was more like scribbling. At that point I couldn’t spell very well, and I’m not sure I had a good understanding of the alphabet. In fourth grade I wrote my first official story. Two years later came my first “indie” publication. And in eighth grade I typed my first full-length novel. All were mysteries, and the novel had a romance subplot.

 

 

Do you write in a number of genres or stick to one?

 

In short stories, I’ve been published in mystery and romance. Now I’m concentrating on contemporary romance novels, from sweet to lower-sensuality levels. They’re all focused on family, quirky characters, and small-town values.
