Friday Alice Renaud it visiting and Talking about Heroes, Heroines and Villains #MFWRAuthor #Fantasy #Heroes #Villains

1.       Heroes, Heroines, Villains. Which are your favorite to write?

I find heroines easier to write than heroes, because I’m a woman so it’s easier for me to picture myself in another woman’s skin. My favorite characters to write are villains, though. I love a good villain!

2.      Heroes. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or plain imagination create the man you want every reader to love? Do they come before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?

Usually I have an idea for the story first, then the hero develops from that idea. My novellas and short stories are all connected. A secondary character in a story will often become the main character in the next story. My heroes come mostly from my imagination, I don’t base them on real people. Once I have written the story, I look for pictures that resemble the character I’ve created.

3.      Heroines. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or imagination create the woman you want the reader to root for? Do they appear before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?

When I have an idea for a story, I usually imagine one of the characters first – sometimes it’s the hero, sometimes the heroine. If I have imagined the hero first, his character will influence how I create the heroine. She has to be right for the hero, but there also needs to be an element of conflict. For example, in my story Music for a Merman, the hero is a cop. I made the heroine into an eco warrior and made him arrest her. If the heroine comes first, then she will grow from the idea I had for the story. Again, heroines come from my imagination. I’ve never based a hero or heroine on someone I know, though sometimes they have elements of myself.

4.       Villains or villainesses or an antagonist, since they don’t always have to be the bad guy or girl. They can be a person opposed to the hero’s or heroine’s obtaining their goal. How do you choose one? How do you make them human?

My Sea of Love series is made up of three novellas, each one centred on a young shifter merman or mermaid who falls in love with a human, in defiance of the laws of their people. In the first two books the antagonists are the heroes’ fathers, the elders of the merfolk community, who are conservative and opposed to their son marrying a human woman. I made sure I explained their motivation – fear of change, fear of losing their identity.

In the third book, Mermaids Marry in Green, the villains are proper monsters – bloodthirsty, cannibalistic red hags. Monsters are great fun to write. I intend to show more of the hags’ character and motivation in future books, however, so they too will become more “human”.

5.      What is your latest release? Who is the hero, heroine and or the villain?

Love Comes in Many Shapes is my first gay romance/menage story. It is included in the new BVS anthology of LGBTQIA+ love stories, Rainbow Desire, on pre order sale only $0.99 until the release date 1 October. It has two heroines, Bryony the shifter mermaid, and Maia the witch. The antagonist is Ariel, Maia’s ex, a powerful warlock. Maia and Bryony have run away together and are living the dream in Las Vegas, but their relationship comes under strain when Ariel turns up.

6.      What are you working on now?

I am writing another short story for the next BVS anthology, “Dark Desire,” which is planned for 2022. A shifter mermaid teams up with a vampire to steal a magical jewel… with unintended consequences. I have also just finished the first draft of my next novel, “How to win a sea-witch.” I am hoping it will be the first book in a new series, “Conjuring Love,” about time travelling witches and warlocks.

Friday Alice Renaud is Visiting and Talking about Panster or Plotter #MFRWAuthor #Panster #Plotter #Characters #Paranormal romance

1.      Are you a panster or a plotter or perhaps a bit of both?

Very much a bit of both! I start off with the best plotting intentions, but then discover that my lovingly crafted plot does not work as well on the page as it did in my head. Or my characters decide to do something different from what I had planned.

2.      Which comes first - characters or plot for you?

The characters come first. Before I start writing a book I do a detailed outline for my hero and heroine, with their physical appearance, personality, goals and desires, habits, tastes, etc. Then I imagine them interacting. Only then do I start to write the plot, usually a chapter by chapter outline (just a few lines per chapter).

3.      What are you working on now? Is this a book in a current series or something totally new?

I have just finished writing a new book, How to Win a Sea Witch, it will be the first book in a new series, “Conjuring Love”, about time travelling witches and warlocks. I am now drafting the outline for the characters in the second book in the Conjuring Love series, “Dangerous Blessings.”

4.      Do you have some kind of object or place that figures in most of your books? I use gems a lot, hospitals and caves.

Water plays a big part in all of my books. They are all set near the sea, or a big river. My series Sea of Love, which won its category in the Paranormal Romance Guild Reviewer’s Choice Award 2020, follows the lives and loves of three shape shifting merfolk. The colours blue and green also feature a lot. For example the third book in my Sea of Love series is called Mermaids Marry in Green, and my sci-fi romance story “Space Cowboy Blues” in the BVS anthology “Cowboy Desire” is about a cowboy who travels to another planet, where everything is blue and lethal to humans… including the beautiful alien he falls in love with!

5.      Do you write everyday or just when the spirit hits?

I have a family and a full time job, so I write mostly at the week end and during my holidays. I don’t wait for inspiration to strike – if I have time to write, I write.

7.      Who are your favorite authors? What about a book you’ve enjoyed?

I love fantasy, and have recently finished Robin Hobb’s Realm of the Elderlings series. She’s an author I admire greatly. I’m now reading A Court of Wings and Ruins by Sarah J. Maas and enjoying it very much.

Friday Alice Renaud is Visiting and Talking about Who She Was Before #MFRWAuthor #Writing #Paranormal

1. What were you before you became an author? Did this influence your choices as a writer?

I was and still am a compliance officer for a pharmaceutical company. Before that I worked in a variety of finance roles in a variety of industries. I write fantasy and paranormal romance so I can’t say my daily work life influences my writing directly… but it certainly has given me plenty of ideas for fun blog posts and occasionally for characters. I like to give my villains the names of people I don’t like!

2.   Are you genre specific or general? I don’t mean major genres but subdivisions or romance, mystery or paranormal.

I write paranormal and fantasy romance, because I’m a fluffy romantic at heart and fantasy was and remains my first love. It is reading The Lord of the Rings aged 12 that made me want to become a writer. I also occasionally write short stories for magazines, those are contemporary romance or family-themed stories.

3. What is your latest release?

Music for a Merman, book 2 in the Sea of Love series, is out now. The Sea of Love series was a winner in the Paranormal Romance Guild Reviewer’s Choice Award 2019. The books can be read independently as each novel is standalone. Music for a Merman is a forbidden love story between a shape shifting merman who is also a policeman, and a sexy eco-warrior.

4. What are you working on now?

Mermaids Marry in Green, book 3 in the Sea of Love series, has just been accepted by my publisher and will be out later this year. I am now starting the first book in a new series, Conjuring Love, about time travelling witches and warlocks.

5. Do your reading choices influence your choice of a writing career?

I love fantasy. I have just discovered the books of Robin Hobb, and am devouring her Farseer Trilogy. I’ve already bought the first book in the following series, the Liveship Traders. I look forward to reading a story set on a ship! The ocean plays a very important part in my Sea of Love novels. I also read contemporary and historical books, the next book on my To Be Read list is The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty.

Friday Alice Renaud is visiting and talking about Who She Was Before #MFRWAuthor #fantasy romance #Mermen

‘1. What were you in your life before you became a writer? Did this influence your writing?

I think I became a writer at the age of 14, when I wrote my first story, a sprawling, way-too-ambitious fantasy saga set in a world that the sea covered entirely once every 500 years. So before I was a writer I was a child. But I think a part of me has remained a child, in love with stories, monsters and heroes. Now I am a published writer but I also have a full time job as a compliance officer for a pharmaceutical company. I write at night – I think I might be turning into a vampire, without the bloodlust.

2.   Are you genre specific or general? Why? I don't mean genres like romance, mystery, fantasy etc. There are many subgenres of the above.

I write fantasy romance, because I’m a romantic at heart and fantasy was my first love. It’s reading The Lord of the Rings, aged 12, that made me want to become a storyteller. Even then I zoomed in on the romantic elements. My favourite character was Eowyn, the feisty shield-maiden, in love with a man she couldn’t have, because he was in love with a beautiful elf.

3. Did your reading choices have anything to do with your choice of a genre or genres?

I read widely – I love fantasy, paranormal, and historical romance, but I also like contemporary novels. Currently I’m reading “The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock,” by Imogen Hermes Gowar, and loving every word of it. It’s a historical romance with fantasy elements, so right up my street. I have written contemporary romance, but I enjoy writing fantasy a lot more, and that’s definitely because I’ve always loved fantasy books. Tolkien, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett are a few of my favourite authors.

4. What's your latest release?

My first book, A Merman’s Choice, was published in January this year by Black Velvet Seductions. It’s the story of the forbidden, but fated, love between a shape-shifting merman and a human woman, inspired by the landscapes and legends of Wales and Brittany. The second book in the series, Music for a Merman, is due out later this year.

5. What are you working on now?

I’m working on the third book in the Sea of Love mermen series. The title is “Mermaids Marry in Green.” This story is based in London, and is more of an urban fantasy, centred on the romance between a kick-ass shape-shifting mermaid and a warlock who is trying to give up magic. It’s great fun!
