Tuesday's Writer's Tip - Revision Completeness #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Writing #Revision

One more thing to check when you're doing that final revision of your story is completeness. This is a hard area to be completely sure of. You've read the story so many times and you know the characters almost too well but you need to be sure you haven't left out something. Remember when you're writing a story if there's a gun in the first scene, you need to be sure it's fired or a good reason it's not by the time you finish the book

I remember reading a great book by a friend. In the middle of the book, she mentioned the hero's mother talking to the heroine about wearing men's clothes. She would tell her later why but she never did. I asked my friend why? The book was up for a re-release and this time she answered my questions. We're not all as lucky to have the chance to answer that hanging question for a re-issue of the book. I'm working on a novel right now and I know there are at least two of these items I'll need to address further in the book.

Skipping something the reader needs to know can happen because you know the reason. If the reader has to scratch their head, this isn't good. Just make sure all the clues are there. Not just for mysteries but for every story there are clues to understanding the characters you may know but the reader doesn't. Make sure they're there.

Have you glossed over a major scene and not expanded it so everything is there. This can happen. Sometimes you're in a rush or sometimes the scene makes you feel uncomfortable to write. Don't rush through a major scene and summarize. The reader won't thank you.
