Tuesday's Writer's Tip - Scenes - Overkill #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Writing #Scenes #Overkill

When you're writing an important scene in your story, one thing to remember is stick to what's happening in a scene. Take a fight scene. Choose your viewpoint character with care. If it's one of the fighters, they won't necessarily pay attention to what's happening around them. Now if you choose an observing character, have them stick to the moves of the fight. Going off on tangents can dilute the impact of a scene. Say the observer is watching the fight and something tangental catches his attention and he wanders off. If the fight is the purpose for the scene, stick wo what's happening in the fight. After the action is over, there will be time to think and maybe discuss the other observations

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing #Thoughts - Birthdays

Meander 1 - Reading - Read a number of books last week. First was The Wrong Words by Yvonne Rediger - What a great mystery and a story that intrigued me for I learned things about another country and found a character I hope will be featured in more books. Read Canine Cupid byAlisonLohans - A nice romance and the story of a wary woman, her dog, a man and a stray he takes in., Then Just before Sunset by Edin Monroe The story of a married couple and their problems. She was a cancer survivor and her husband. After she beat the disease and was in remission, he began to take jobs far away from home for long months at a time. What happens when she learns the disease has re-surfaced? A sense of Dury by Joanie MacNeil - a second in the Men of Honor series and a great love story. Finally Just one Scandal by Carly Phipplis. As usual a great romance by this prolific author. Enjoyed all the reads last week.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - Birthday - On Saturday I turned 85 and the day was rather like and unlike other days in my week,. Did some writing and typing as usual. Found face book to be extremely busy with Birthday greetings. My oldest granddaughter made me a cake and found a cute dragon to add to my collection. Someday I will count the number but will soon need a bigger shelf above my computer for the ensemble. Had phone calls from the children at a distance. Then had dinner with son and grandchildren. Three of the seven. We came back for cake, ice cream and strawberries. Good day in all.

Meander 3 - Writing - Working on the final written draft of Incal. Have two chapters completed. Book should be done by the end of September. Then what next?

The Last Dragon

What do dragons, knights and romance have in common? Grab a copy of multi-published author Daryl Devore’s medieval fantasy romance – The Last Dragon and discover the answer.

A sorcerer craving dominance merged with a dragon, the power overwhelmed him causing him to split into three dragons. Demora ruled thought, but was lost in time. Yidithe offered protection, shining like the light of the sun. Ayrradex craved chaos, revelling in destroying souls.

Many knights died, attempting to slay the devil beast. One knight, Prince Hawkyns, did not fear death. He’d lost everything. Away on a mission when Ayrradex attacked his fathers kingdom, Penrythe, Hawkyns returned to find his noble father – feeble and defeated. His wise mother – crazed. His beautiful wife and unborn child - dead. Only a pile of ashes remained for him to bury. He knelt before his King and vowed to slay the devil-beast or be slain.

Derry was born with powers that terrified her parents. They delivered her to a nunnery to be raised in secret. Jathe, a wise sorceress, discovered the young girl and trained her to one day use the secret hidden in her soul.

Legends spoken around campfires hinted the sole way to destroy Ayrradex was when the hearts of a knight and a golden dragon became one. But after a vicious battle with Ayrradex, the golden dragon was thought to be dead.

Can Prince Hawkyns’s bravery and Derry’s powers end the reign of the devil-beast’s terror?

Daryl Devore is visiting and talking about Genres #MFRWAuthor #Writing #Genres #roance #medieval fantasy

1. Do you write a single genre or do your fingers flow over the keys creating tales in many forms?

Does your reading choices reflect your writing choices?

Are there genres you wouldn’t attempt?

I write many sub-genres to romance – billionaire, medieval, medieval fantasy, twisted fairy tale, urban fantasy, NA, rock star  and sports.

No, my reading choice is old British mysteries.

I don’t think I’ll try gothic horror. Horror stories are so not my thing. They scare me.

2. Heroes, Heroines, Villains. Which are your favorite to write?

The hero was my favourite. But in my latest WIP, it’s the heroine who is being so much more fun to write.

3. Heroes. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or plain imagination create the man you want every reader to love? Do they come before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?

I am a pantser, so I have no idea who my hero is until I start writing him. In my rock star trilogy, I had no idea he was going to be a rock star. I just started writing the book. After I have a good feel for my hero, then I’ll search out photos to help me describe him.

4. Heroines. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or imagination create the woman you want the reader to root for? Do they appear before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?

My heroines appear the same way my heroes do. I start typing and words appear on the screen and some are the hero doing heroic things and some are the heroine doing heroic things. Same as the hero, when I have a feeling for the heroine, then I’ll search out some photos of her.

5. Villains or villainesses or an antagonist, since they don’t always have to be the bad guy or girl. They can be a person opposed to the hero’s or heroine’s obtaining their goal. How do you choose one? How do you make them human?

In my rock star trilogy, the villain – Gan – started off creepy, but as I progressed into book 2 and definitely book 3 – he just got worse. One reader say she shuddered whenever his name appeared on the page.

6. What is your latest release? Who is the hero, heroine and or the villain?

What Happened in Bangkok- book 1 of my rockstar trilogy – Two Hearts ~ One Love

Hero – Darien Scott

Heroine – Erika Bailey

Villain – Gan. He’s so creepy, he only gets one name.

7. What are you working on now?

AN earlier release was a medieval fantasy romance, The Last Dragon. I’m in a writiers group where we write monthly flashettes – short stories based on some prompts. I wrote one, looked at it and thought – I just wrote the prologue for a sequel to The Last Dragon.

8. How can people find you?

My blog and Twitter are the best places to locate me. But there is also my newsletter to learn fun stuff about me and my writing life and writing friends.

Blog - Romance - Sweet to Heat

Twitter

Bi-monthly Newsletter

9. Who are your favorite authors?

Tw o British mystery writers – Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers. When I need a break from the world, I will lose myself in one of their books. I have them all for both authors, and have read them at least a dozen times.

Thursday's Opening Scene from Seducing the Doctor #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Romance #Doctor #Builder

 “You’re next.”

Matt Blakefield choked on the piece of wedding cake he’d been about to swallow. “Not in a million years. Why don’t you pick on one of our unmarried friends like Tony or Jules?”

“They aren’t here,” his sister Allie said.

Matt’s gaze slid around the long table in the inn’s dining room spearing each couple with a glare. Friends and family had gathered to celebrate this morning’s wedding of his brother to the mother of his nine year old son.

“I have a friend who you would like,” Allie said.

Meg grinned. “She would be perfect.”

Matt pretended to shoot his sisters. “No sale.” He dropped his napkin on the table.

“Remember the curse.” Mark’s sly smile teased. “None of us has escaped. Maybe there’s a woman from your past you can’t forget.”

Was there? Yes. But the reason he couldn’t forget her showed him in a bad way. Time to hit the road. With this decision made he wondered how he could flee before his sisters set up a date. As if in answer to his wishes his cell vibrated. Salvation.

“Matt here. Sorry you missed the wedding…I’ll tell him.” He looked up. “Jules said congrats. Sorry he was on a hunt and couldn’t book a flight in time… So what did you learn?”

His friend and investigator’s news was all Matt wanted to hear. “I’m on my way. Yes, today.”

As if he would stay here where plans he wanted no part of were being laid. He’d been present for the important event. He had no reason to linger and a huge need to escape. Although he wasn’t to meet Jules until Monday morning the opportunity was perfect.

He rose. “Have to leave. Jules has info I need on this year’s makeover house.”

“On the weekend?” His father, CEO of the Good Magazine Group and recently married to his teenage love arched an eyebrow.

“Yeah, it’s the Smiton house. You know the one I’ve always been interested in. I want to use this as the project for converting a house from energy sucking to energy efficient. Jules has a line on the owner’s location. I want the contract signed so we can start work soon.” He didn’t mention how his mother had loved the house and talked about the mystery of the heir’s disappearance. There’d been no thought of the man’s death, just that he had gone to Europe to live.

His father’s forehead wrinkled. “If there’s a problem, find another house. Who knows what condition the Smiton house is in. No one has lived there for more than twenty five years.”

“I’ve checked. The house is solid.”

“Find one with the owners in residence. They’ll appreciate the free upgrade.”

Matt groaned. “And spend hours suggesting changes that won’t work or constantly complain about the inconvenience. Not on a bet.” Matt rose. Another thing he failed to mention was his plan to live in the house.

He kissed his new sister-in-law’s cheek. “Let Mark spoil you and Davy. My brother has a few years of presents to bestow.” He made his way around the table kissing the women and clasping hands with the men.

Matt strode to the cloakroom to retrieve his leather jacket and helmet. He’d planned to hang out in one of the cottages until tomorrow but not with the schemes buzzing with the ladies. He leaned over the counter, kissed the middle-aged woman’s cheek and dropped a ten spot in the tip tray.

He dashed out the door and down the steps to the parking lot and his bike. As the engine roared to life the relatives gathered and the protests began.

So much for a quick getaway. He braced for arguments.

“Stay,” his new sister-in-law called. “You have one of the cabins to yourself.”

“We won’t bother you, I promise,” his step-mother said.

She wouldn’t but that we didn’t include his sisters. “Another time.”

“Matt, it’s going to rain.” The voices of four females rose in a chorus.

“I won’t melt.” He slapped his helmet on his head. With a spray of gravel he headed to the road.

Exit Matt fleeing a gaggle of women intent on ending his bachelor state.

“You’re next.” Had someone shouted that or was his imagination playing tricks. Next wasn’t on his agenda.

He waved. “Not today. Not this year. Maybe never.” The engine’s roar drowned any comments.

Wednesday Seducing the Photographer #MFRWHooks #BWLAuthor #romance #Hudson Valley #Photographer #magazine editor

Join the authors at #MFRWHooks here:  http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com  for some great excerpts. Mine is from Seducing the Photographer. She wants a forever man and he wants freedom

BLURB:

Meg is sure she’s made a mistake when she agrees to pick up and Injured Steve, the magazine group’s photographer from the airport. The first moment she saw him, the Blakefield Curse took effect. She fell in love and she was a forever woman. He wasn’t. Spending time with him over the weekend only cements her feelings. She has rules of life and she breaks everyone of them even the new ones she added that weekend.

Steve has been intrigued by Meg and he enjoys her blushes. He’s found ways to raise them but something more is happening here. When she leaves abruptly, he wants to track her down but his broken leg makes pursuit difficult. Now he must find a way to win her over and that takes some time and clever moves.

EXCERPT:

The attendant whistled. “That your boss?”

“His sister.”  Steve’s hands clenched. Pain shot along his left arm.

“Man, she is one hot babe. Shame you’re helpless.”

Steve grinned as several X-rated thoughts arose. “Hardly helpless but I’m not touching her.” He wanted to do more than touch. Meg Blakefield was trouble. She was one woman who could make him forget he liked his freedom.

“You dead or is she taken?”

“Neither. It’s complicated.” That was the truth. She was a forever woman and he was a today man. There was a new place to photograph and a new woman to explore.

Have camera. Willing to travel. His way of life.

Steve shifted his camera. Much as he denied the attraction, Meg was able to make him stand at attention in less than a second. She also brought out the rudeness of a teenager with his first crush.

“Steve,” she said.

He loved the prim precision of her voice. “Meg, you’re looking good,” he drawled. Slowly his gaze moved from her short blonde curls, over her breast and drifted lower before returning to her face. As usual she blushed. “Get a bit too much sun?”

According to her sister, Meg had elaborate rules of life, a large dose of curiosity and a penchant for leaping before looking. Could he push her into a more intimate situation?

His gaze lingered on her mouth. He wanted to taste her full lips and taste her. He wanted to inhale the fragrance of her passion.

Wouldn’t happen. She would jump to the wrong conclusion the way she had when she had shouted her suspicions about the stolen exclusive. When her voice took on a cool tone his interest had peaked but his anger about the accusation had won.

Sure Simone had been his lover and boss for a short time. Once he’d stopped working for her their affair had ended. He didn’t give secrets away. The truth appeared and Meg had apologized. He’d told her the next time she jumped she’d better aim her delectable body into his bed. Scarlet had been the skin tone of the day, plus the glacial glare in her blue eyes. Did she remember what he couldn’t forget and fantasize about?

The attendant dropped a duffle on the floor. Steve slipped him a tip. With the man’s assistance Steve transferred to the wheelchair Meg held. She fitted the duffle straps around the handles and pushed him outside. As they crossed the street and down a ramp her grunts and groans made him grin.

“A bit out of condition are you? I can show you some stamina building exercises.”

“Not needed. You’re riding in a relic from the days when my brothers were involved in sports. Casts generally weigh a ton.”

“Hardly. It’s fiberglass.”

“Who’s taking care of you when you arrive at your apartment? You’re an invalid.”

“Care to see how much of one I am.” He imagined her rosy cheeks. “Are you driving back to the city tonight?”

“No. I left a message for Allie. I’ll bunk on the couch at their apartment.”

“Brave woman. I hear they can’t leave each other alone. You’ll need blinders and ear plugs. They’re in lust.”

“They’re in love. They’re engaged.”

“When did that happen?”

“Last week. They’ve set a date for December. See, love is the verdict.”

“Guess so.” He turned his head so he could see her. “Why did Mark send you?”

“First, I live closest to the airport. Second, I was the only family member without plans for this evening. Guess I was his last choice.”

Steve sucked in a breath. Was his buddy and editor of Good Travelin’ playing matchmaker? Just because Mark had caught him watching Meg every chance he had meant nothing more than a man admiring a pretty woman. Not that being cozy with her for a week or two wouldn’t be great, just not forever. No way.

Tuesday's Writer's Tip Building the Big Scenes #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Writing #Big Scenes

You've finished the opening and you must get to the ending. Maybe you have an idea how you want the story to end. First you must navigate the middle of the story. The middle is where you start to build toward the big scenes such as the rexckoning, the climax, the resolution.

To reach these scenes, you need to build bit by bit toward these scenes, allowing your readers to hope and to fear what might come. There are smaller problems that must be solved and come to a resolution before the big ones can be reached. The reader needs to see the destination slowly be revealed. There needs to be shown character growth before there can be those big scenes that will make the readher cheer of cry. We'll be discussing how this comes about in the next few posts.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading - Still in Pern with the amazing dragons. The new reads are building up but I must write reviews on the last group I read before reading more.

Meander 3 - Thoughts - Spam - Sometimes I recieve in my Spam folder things what make me want to laugh. I do not need hormones to increase my libido. Nor do I want to fill out forms to find a fifty dollar prize that's something I don't want. If they were a gift card to a place where I might shop or Amazon qwhere I can keep filling my Kindle, I might bite. They're always for things I don't need or use. I just delete them all.

Meander 3 - Writint - I've started on the last rewrite of Incal. That means months from now, I'll do a look at the grammer, spelling and all and get it sent off. This draft will take about two months. Soon I'll have to let my publisher know but not before I really have a finish date.

Sunday's Book - Seducing The Doctor #MFRWAuthor #BWLAuthor #Romance #Doctor #builder

“You’re next.”

Those words send Matt Blakefield fleeing his brother’s wedding. Marriage or even falling in love is the last of his desires. What he wants to learn is the identity of the owner of the house he wants to use as a make-over for the magazine he edits, Good Livin’. A fall rainstorm and a pine tree sends his motorcycle into a spin and into the arms of an old acquaintance, a girl he hurt in high school.

Cassie Moore has borrowed a cabin from one of her partners in a cardiology practice to come to terms with a broken engagement. The news came via an email. Her fiancĂ©e had married another woman just weeks before their scheduled marriage. The appearance of Matt at her door brings an old attraction into full bloom. She realizes love is lurking but he’s a player and she needs to forget the connection.

Is it possible that a weekend of love can become a lifetime?

Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2016

A K/U book.

This is a cute story. I loved Cassie and Matt's characters and I loved how his family
couldn't keep their noses out of their business.

Matt has sat around long enough and watched everyone pair off and get married. No matter
who is getting married, Matt always finds himself getting set up with someones co-worker or
friend. The last thing that Matt wants is to settle down and get married, but his family has other
plans. Going away for the weekend to one of his families cabins seems to be just what he needs
right now.

Cassie is a doctor and up until a couple of weeks ago, she was engaged to Tim. Much to her
surprise, Tim marries the office nurse, all of a sudden, out of the blue and on a Thursday no less.
Needing to escape, Cassie borrows one of her Senior Partners Cabins for a much needed get away.

This book is filled with surprises, some more pleasant than others.
