Friday Lorelei Confer is Visiting and Talking About Who She Was Before #MFRWAuthor #Romantic Suspense

1. What were you before you became an author? Did this influence your choices as a writer? For thirty years I worked in the financial arena as a staff accountant in public account and also in private accounting as a Controller and CFO. I wrote reports of account analysis, budget(s), growth and deficits, etc. etc. During this time, I wrote in a journal every night and relieved my mind of harrowing problems as well as reading romance and mysteries books for that “take me away” moment.

2. Are you genre specific or general? I don’t mean major genres but subdivisions or romance, mystery or paranormal. Yes, romantic suspense or thriller.

3. What is your latest release? Deadly Homecoming releases Feb 18, 2020, the 5th book in the Deadly series.

4. What are you working on now? I have five release in 2020 so I’m working a lot of promo as well as edits of three of them.

5. Does your reading choices influence your choice of a writing career? Yes, i think so. I like to write and read romantic suspense.

Thursday's Fifth Scene Dragons of Fyre #MFRWAuthor #BWLAuthor #Fantasy #Romance #Dragons

Several days had passed since he and Radlan returned from the village. Drakon climbed the stairs past his room on the second level of the tower and continued until he reached the square area at the top. He walked around the wall surrounding the edge and halted at one of the corners. He rested his elbows on the cap stone and peered in the direction of Sea Cliff Tower.
Though the distance was too far to see the tower, he remembered every moment of the five day journey by horse. He’d been forced to ride with Lagon. A gag  effectively prevented speech. All during the trip, Lagon gloated over his victory. At the journey’s end Drakon remembered how berry tea had been forced down his throat. When the agony of the headache had ceased he’d been aboard a slaver’s ship. Drakon sucked in a breath of cold air. Would Lagon ever pay for the death and destruction he had wrought?
     *Drakon, come.*
     *Old One, what’s wrong?*
     *She escapes.*
     *Who?*
*The last red of High Peak’s lineage. Soon she will lay her eggs. Eggs we need.*
Drakon started to the door. *When will she arrive?*
*She will not manage the distance. We must go to her.*
*What can I do? How far must I ride?* Drakon did not like the thought of leaving High Peaks.
*You will fly with me.*
     “Men don’t fly.*
*In the past, men and women rode on the backs of reds and blues. This is what you will need. A fur pad and long leather straps. Fur-lined sacks, stones to heat in a fire, and pieces of fur to cover them and cushion the eggs. Find the sleeping sacks. I will need an extra feeding of meat and thorns. You must also carry a feeding in a leather sack.*
Drakon clattered down the steps. In the storeroom he gathered the supplies the yellow requested. He pulled on a heavy jacket and took a pair of gloves.
When he entered the kitchen, Sofona appeared in the doorway of the hall leading to the quarters she shared with Radlan. “Is the Old One ill?”
“No. We go to rescue a High Peaks red and her eggs.” He told her what the Old One wanted.
“I’ll wake Radlan. He’ll bring the feedings.”
“Make sure he packs a second one and adds thorns to both. I must figure how to fasten these things to the Old One’s back.”
Sofona laughed. “You will fly like the men and women on the tapestry that once hung in the great hall.”
Drakon nodded. He had vague memories of the massive wall hanging. Hadn’t he seen and used that weaving after his return? Maybe the tapestry had been a different one. “I believe I will.” He carried his gatherings to the cavern and placed them on the sand.
The Old One sent pictures that Drakon followed, carefully placing the fur pad over the ridges on the dragon’s back. Because the yellow’s spinal ridges were narrower than the reds and blues there was no room for a saddle. He fastened the straps to the pad, ran one on either side of the Old One’s neck and united them with the pair drawn over the dragon’s rear legs.
Radlan arrived with the feedings. While the yellow ate, Drakon added the rocks and furs to the two enormous sacks and tied them to the riding pad. As soon as the Old One had devoured the meal, Drakon climbed to the dragon’s back. He fastened himself to the pad. The yellow moved from the cavern, across the forecourt and stepped over the edge. The great wings unfurled.
Drakon’s stomach felt as though it had dropped to the ground. Just before they crashed into a stand of towering firs, the Old One caught an updraft and they soared into the moonlit sky. With caution      Drakon relaxed his hold on the fur.
*Drakon, open your speaker’s path and call the red.*
Drakon sent a silent call to the High Peaks dragon. The yellow’s voice joined his. *I do not know your name. I am the son of the dead lord of High Peaks Tower. I want to help you.* Over and over he sent the message.
*I am the Old One, a yellow of High Peaks’ lineage. I want to help you. Call us. Lead us to you.*
*Who?* The voice carried undertones of pain, sadness, and fear. The emotions vibrated through Drakon.
*Once I was called Jade. I am your controller. Where are you?*
*Gone from Sea Cliff. Past the captive towers. I thought to reach the cavern, but I stayed too long. My mate is dead. The evil one set the other blues on him. My eggs arrive soon.*
Drakon heard despair in the dragon’s voice and sought to give her hope. *You must live. We need your eggs, or the lineage is ended.*
*We will take the eggs to safety,* the Old One said.
*Will my dragonets be free from the evil one?*
*You have my pledge,* Drakon said. *They will fly and I will be their speaker. I was a slave. Now I am free. Your offspring will be cherished. I will rebuild High Peaks Tower and see those of Sea Cliff punished for what they have done.*
*Not the dragons,* she said. *Just the evil one. The dragons have no controller and their speakers must obey the evil one.* Her voice sounded louder. *I must land and wait for you. The eggs come soon.*
Before long, Drakon saw a large dark shape on the ground. The moonlight revealed the red’s resting place. The Old One spiraled down and landed near the laboring dragon.
*The eggs,* the red cried. *You have come in time. Care for them. High Peaks Tower will grow strong with honorable speakers and dragons.*
Drakon quickly untied the straps and slid to the ground. He started a small fire to heat rocks to bury beneath the furs in the sacks. As he worked, he wondered what he could do to fulfill the red’s predictions. How could he rebuild the line of speakers? They were usually the sons of the tower’s lord. Thoughts of being with a woman filled him with panic. Memories of the conditioning by the priestesses of the Temple of Fyre bound him with iron bands.
*Not always the sons,* the Old One said. *Speakers can be found among the kin both near and far.*
*And in ones not tied by blood,* the red said.
Were they right? Drakon sat beside the grieving red and encouraged her. The first egg arrived. He nearly protested when the Old One caught the blue egg in his talons and licked the shell.
*Pick it up. Breathe on it,* the yellow dragon said. *Then place the egg in one of the sacks. There is no blue to perform the rite. Your breath must do.*
When the red laid the second egg, the Old One licked the shell and rolled the egg to the female dragon. Her tongue moved over the surface.
*Do not touch this one with your skin,* the Old One cautioned.
The red began to shake. *Speaker, my time has come. Name the dragonets and care for them.*
     *I will.*
*Old One, you must teach them.*
     *I will.*
*There is a green of our lineage at Sea Cliff. He was hidden and cared for by Arana, who can speak to all the dragons the way you can.*
Arana. Drakon’s thoughts drifted to his childhood in the tower. There had been a girl four years younger. His parents rescued her from the slavers. She earned her freedom because of her ability to care for the dragons. Could Arana the red spoke of be the same girl?
*The evil one has made her a slave again,* the red said. *She helped me escape.*
A picture of a young woman entered Drakon’s thoughts. Her hair, the color of flames, told him the truth. She was his friend and playmate. *Why did he enslave her? She was free.*
*There are no free women at Sea Cliff. There are no free dragons, except the green. Verde is his name.* The red rose and unfurled her wings. She lumbered forward.
Though she rose from the ground, Drakon knew she would never clear the trees. *Old One, stop her.*
*She chooses death. Honor her choice and honor her. Open the feed sack. While I eat, call the green.*

2019 Book Hooks

Excerpt:

Three days later, the For Sale sign vanished from the yard of the house next-door. My curiosity spiked like the humidity before a storm. What kind of neighbors would we have? A family, newly-weds or people escaping the city? I wanted to know. The realtor where a friend worked had been the name on the sign.         Tracey Stanton would know. I tapped her phone number.

When she answered, I waited until we finished the usual chit-chat about our families and the church.         We finally exhausted those subjects. “Who bought the house next-door to mine?”
“Kate, neither… I forgot you sold the Victorian. Why do you want to know?”
“Mainly curiosity. Tell me it’s not a family with a herd of children.” I settled back in my recliner and stared through the picture window at the river.
“No children. No husband. Why she wants a four bedroom with a finished attic is beyond me. Was the quickest sale I ever made.” She lowered her voice. “She’s an author who had a spectacular success. Her first two books hit the New York Times list and have stayed there. She’ll soon release a third novel.”
“What’s her name? Maybe I’ve read her books.”
“She writes suspense with a bit of romance. Don’t you prefer non-fiction biographies?”
“Usually, but a neighbor should be supported. Her name?”
     “Sabrina Gates.”
     “I’ll visit the library tomorrow.”
“Guess you don’t have an electronic reader.”
“Not yet. Thanks for the information. I’ll see you at church on Sunday.” I hung up and went to tell Lars what I had learned about our new neighbor.

Tuesday's Writer's Tip Moment of Decision #MFRWAuthor #BWLAuthor #Decision

The black moment ends with the hero or heroine believing all is lost. Then something occurs. Does he or she accept that all is lost. In this moment, a decision must be made.

The character can decide to accept that what they desire will never happen. This brings the ending of the story to a bitter-sweet one. This must be satisfactory to the reader. That can be difficult but is possible to achieve.

The character may decide to continue fighting for what they first decided was their goal.  This ending may or may not be satisfactory.

The character may decide to change their goal and seek one that's not perfect but is one they can live with. This ending is usually satisfactory.

An ending of the story is one that is satisfactory for the reader. It does now have to be happy though in most romances it is a happy one. In mysteries the satisfactory ending shows the  main character finding justice. So the decision to reach those last few pages is one that's a decision flowing from the black moment.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #MFRWAuthor #BWLAuthor #Poem #Series #Writing #CJ Cherryh

Meander 1 -- Poem --  Carpe Noctum

My love, your frost-kissed head of hair
Holds more appeal than untinged locks.
Though mine seems young, if you look close
You'll find the trace of artist's brush.
My body's taut and so is yours
From dieting and exercise.
Oh come before arthritis
Settlesin our aging joints and
And we become as the winter's sun
Headed for its longest night.
Let us flare in one small fire
Making a warm night off-season
Mildly reminiscent of the
Bonfire days seized in our youth.

Meander 2 - Series -- There is one series I've followed from the beginning CJ Cherryh's Foreigner series. A new book arrived and I have this odd thing with this particular series. I begin reading from book 1. Just read there's another one coming in September and I've spent way too much money to pre-order the book. Means in September, I can read 21 books in a row. I'm not sure why this series has enthralled me but I really hope it never ends.

Meander 3 Writing -- Am slowly working on my next book. Hopefully all this stuff I have to do having nothing to do with writing will be ended and I can get back to my schedule.

Another from the prolific and multi-talented Janet Lane Walters. This tale is the next part of an on-going series set in a colorful, sexy, dangerous fantasy world which put me in mind of fantasy in the tradition of Conan the Barbarian. Here we have telepathic dragons, who have many magical properties in their enchanted hides and who were my favorite characters. There are also high priestesses, wizards, and warlords all warring with one another, seeking control over the world and seeking to turn the sentient beautiful dragons into mere commodities--their hides have proved to be magically valuable. The heroine is strong, inventive and brave. The hero is a wounded warrior, recovering all his faculties after enslavement as a teen-ager. The villain--well, I'm waiting for him to get his in the next installment. This is very readable and would make a great graphic novel

Friday Joan Havelange is Visiting and talking about What She Was Before #MFRWAuthor #BWLAuthor #Mystery #Cozy

What were you before you became an author?

I have worn many hats. I lived north of the 56 parallel, and I worked for a mining company in the computer department. In those days, no one had a desktop or laptop computer; we did it all. Our processor was as big as a fridge. Early days. I’ve also worked in the banking industry. And other jobs from cashier at a pharmacy, to a salesclerk in a home decorating store.

Did this influence your choices as a writer?
All aspects of life and work have influenced me. People I’ve meant and jobs I have done. And travel is a wonderful education. My trip inspired me to write my latest mystery novel Death and Denial

  1. Are you genre specific or general? I don’t mean major genres but subdivisions or romance, mystery or paranormal
My genre is mystery of the cozy kind, no blood guts or gore. But a puzzle to solve and humour along the way. I did try to write a romance novel way back in my 20’s, but I wasn’t romantic enough. Murder mysteries fit me better.

  1. What is your latest release?
Death and Denial. An adventure in Egypt. Not all dead bodies in linen are mummies.

  1. What are you working on now?
My next novel is in the revision stage. The ladies, Mabel and Violet, are back home. Seniors in a condo are meeting an untimely death. Mabel’s mother may be next. My mystery is called The Trouble with Funerals

  1. Does your reading choices influence your choice of a writing career?
It probably does, I read a lot of mysteries, but I do read other genres as well.

Thursday's Fifth Scene Murder and Herbal Tea #MFRWAuthor #BWLAuthor #Cozy mystery #Hudson Valley

On Saturday, I drove Joyce to Herbal Haven and then returned to her house. I planned to cook dinner. As I drove, the uniformity of the small town struck me as interesting. Streets lined with white clapboard houses and a village commons gave a serene feeling. This was not like the polyglot assortment of homes found in my Hudson River village. There, the houses range from those built by the early Dutch settlers to ultramodern structures. The variety suits me.
I sat at the kitchen table sipping mint tea and planning a menu. After studying the spice rack I jotted several I needed and didn’t find. Convinced they were available at Herbal Haven, I drove there. A half dozen cars lined the parking lot. Inside, the place buzzed with energy. Joyce and Brenda stood at the counter ringing sales.
I paused. The shop was in a converted farmhouse. Joyce had removed many of the walls dividing the lower floor into rooms to create an open space. Behind the counter a door opened into the kitchen. A smaller parlor was now the office. Today, the area seemed cluttered with the multiple shelves forming precise rows, Brenda’s doing.
After selecting the things I needed and a new spice grinder, I walked to the counter to pay. Hearing Brenda chastise a customer, I turned and stared.
“Do not touch the displays. Ask for assistance.”
I sucked in a breath and observed Brenda scurry from the counter to confront one of the woman shoppers.
“I wanted to see this clever teapot.” The customer pointed to one of the pottery ones.
“You do not want that ugly thing,” Brenda said. “We plan to remove them from the store.”
The woman grasped her purse. “Don’t tell me what I want. Did you ever hear the customer’s always right?” She strode to the door. The bell clanged. One lost customer.
Brenda spotted me. “Katherine, take my place. I must check the computer. There hasn’t been a moment since we opened, especially since Joyce insists on holding the tea brewing sessions. I’ve told her a dozen times they’re a waste.”
Though I had no desire to act as a sale’s clerk, a glance at Joyce’s slumped shoulders told me she needed help. “I can give you an hour. I’ve a dinner to prepare.”
The hour stretched to nearly three. The steady tide of customers ebbed. I left the shop, drove to the store and revised my dinner menu. With filled canvas bags, I drove to Joyce’s house, determined not to return to Herbal House today. Anger at Brenda would make me snap and say things the women wouldn’t like. Joyce didn’t need more stress.
At six thirty Joyce arrived. Anger flashed in her eyes.
“What did she do now?” I asked.
“Decided to halt the Saturday morning demos. They interrupt her routine.”
I pulled the prepared ingredients from the fridge and started the rice. “You need to buy her out. She refused to sell a customer a teapot. All because Brenda doesn’t like the piece.”
“I know. When I mentioned that, she said we needed to elevate our stock.”
     “Why?”
     Joyce shrugged. “I don’t know.”
     “Buy her out.”
Dana strode into the room. “Mrs. M is right. Get rid of her. She takes half the profits and she lives rent free.”
I gasped. “Rent free. That’s crazy.”
“She paid for the changes in the apartment.” Joyce sank on a chair. “This afternoon I offered to sell my share to her. She refused but with sixty thousand she would sell to me. She only put in thirty. I offered thirty-five or forty.”
What did she say?” I dropped the garlic and ginger into the wok and added the chicken.
“She wanted to think about it but she felt she should make a profit.” Joyce moved to the stove and turned the heat under the rice to simmer and put a lid on the pot. “She won’t be at the shop tomorrow. She and her friend will be away until Monday.”
Dana picked a snow pea from the bowl. “Who is he?”
     “No idea.”
“Looks like she hasn’t changed,” I said.
     “Never will,” Joyce grinned.
The peal of the doorbell broke the conversation. “What time is it?” Dana asked.
“Six thirty or so,” I said.
“Good thing he knows where I hang out.” Dana ran to the door.
I added the scallions, bok choy, snow peas and cashews and stirred.
Dana returned with a handsome young man. His hair was dark and his eyes blue. “Mrs. M, this is Zach.”
I smiled. “Are you joining us for dinner?”
He turned to Dana. “We planned to grab a bite before heading to the movies.”
“Stay,” Joyce said. “Kate cooked for an army.”
     “Smells great. Dana?”
“We’ll stay. Mrs. M is a fabulous cook.”
I turned the burner off and transferred the mixture into a large bowl. Joyce put the rice in another while Dana added two place settings.
Conversation flowed easily. Zach was a local police detective. He’d met Dana when he’d taken one of her classes. No one mentioned my crime-solving attempts and I relaxed.

Murder and Herbal Tea by Janet Lane Walters
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Publisher: Books We Love
First Sentence: During the second week of June, Lars arrived in the Hudson River village where I live and where he had a home.
Review: Katherine, aka Kate, Miller is finally marrying Lars Claybourne. They barely tie the knot and Kate’s off to

clear her friend, Joyce, of any wrong doing…even though all fingers point at her. (Without giving up any spoilers)
It’s serious charges against Joyce, and Kate’s all into figuring out what the authorities seem to be missing.

Following her process of elimination down a twisty path of possibilities kept me on my toes, enjoyably so.

I read Ms. Walters’ book out of sequence, (this is book 5) not that you should read the Mrs. Miller Mysteries books

out of order, but I was able to follow along with the story and character relationships flawlessly.

A happy ending always makes me smile, and Ms. Walters delivers. I recommend this book to anyone who’s into

cozy mysteries where the story-star sleuth comes packed with personality plus; )

Who leaves her groom on their wedding day to solve a murder? Mrs Miller-Claybourne, that's who! And her readers are all the better for it! A tolerant and helpful new husband, a friend in need, cooked books, suspects galore, lots of delicious food, tea, and Victorian homes and shops settings make this a welcome addition to this delightful cozy mystery series. And policemen? When are you going to learn that condescending: "Leave detecting to me" remarks are just NOT WISE in the presence of our super sleuth??

Excerpt:
Following to snatch Lars from his kidnappers proved impossible. Every time someone
stopped me to gush congratulations, my stomach tightened. I thought about being rude
but we were in church and today was meant to be a joyous occasion.
I noticed Sarah’s foster son near the stage. He held a rectangular object in one hand.
His fingers moved so fast they blurred. Texting, I hoped. I hurried toward him. He held a
 phone.
"Jamal, could I use your phone? There’s a call I must make.”
“Sure, Mrs. M.” His hand covered his mouth. “Forgot. You’re now Mrs. C. Do you
 know how to use one?”
I patted his crisp curls. “I may be old but I have some skills with modern technology.
 Mine’s at home.”
He scuffed the floor with the toe of his shoe. “Didn’t mean you were old.”
“It’s all right. I won’t be long.” I slipped from the noisy room and ducked into the small
parlor. Drawing a deep breath, I dialed Herbal Haven’s number. After fifteen rings I
hung up. How did I transpose the last four numbers last week? After two tries, I heard
 Joyce’s voice.
“Who is this?” she asked. “More harassment?”
“It’s Kate. What happened? What did she do?”
     “Got herself murdered.”
     “What?”
“No joke. Everything’s a mess. I couldn’t call you. They took me in for questioning
yesterday morning and didn’t release me until an hour ago when it was too late to
call.” Her voice trembled. “They told me not to leave town.”
     “When was she killed?”
“Sometime Monday night. Yesterday on my way to your place I stopped at the shop
for a basket of fresh herbs I’d fixed for you to plant at your new house. I found her
body, called the police and instantly became the prime suspect.”
“Why you? You had no reason to want her dead, especially when you planned to
buy her out. Did she know?”
“She was making plans to move. One problem. She wanted to keep this quiet until
 she had the cash.”

     “How odd.”
