Tuesday's Writer's Tip Those Opening Pages #MFRWAuthor #BWLPublishing #Openings

I've talked about what should be included in that opening scene of your book, let's look at what should not be there.

Past History - I'm not sure about you but when I'm reading a book that opens with a few enticing paragraphs and then settles down to tell you the character's life history finds me skip reading and soon I close the book and read no more. If you must put a bit of back story in, do it st it isn't a long block. A hint or two will stir the reader's curiosity.

Along with this are Flashbacks. Problem with the character remembering a past incident is that this bit breaks the flow of the story. If you need a flashback in the first few pages or the first scene, you may have started at the wrong place in your story.

Long descriptive paragraphs that go on for pages. Often this is done to establish the setting and give atmosphere. Find a way to establish the where and when of the story in a few short sentences. I once critiqued a story where the opening paragraph had me eagerly reading. Then the next five pages were a travelogue of driving along the California coast with no mention of the character, no action or reaction, just pages of description.

So while you're concentrating on the dos remember and avoid the don'ts.

Meander 1 Poem -- Drowning --

She rouses from her drifting state
Flounders, thrashes
Panic free,lost security
Shore is far
She has forgotten how to swim.
She beats against the water
That wants to sink her down
Down to drowned security.
She makes small waves
Drowning in an empty see
She yields herself
And panic passes.

Meander 2 - A New Venture - Made a decision that may be something interesting. On Thursday in the morning Murder and Mint Tea began a journey to become a different kind of book. By afternoon, we had someone who wanted to do the reading. Herd her and thought her voice was right for Mrs. Miller. So an audio book will be born. This happened fast  Surprised me. Will be interesting to hear.

Meander 3 - Writing - The book is slowly taking form. Hopefully the rough draft will be done by the time the month ends. I think this will be a short novel or a long novella. Always surprises me that a story is always as long as it takes.

Review: 

This was the first book I've read by Janet Lane Walters, but it definitely won't be my last. As you can see the cover is eye-catching and the story did not disappoint. Heart Throbs is steamy, exciting, enjoyable and entertaining. .

1.   Tell me about your latest release? Genre?

Friday’s Child a Regency Romance, which is sensual but contains no illicit sex, will be published in June 2019

2.   Where did the idea arise?

From the children’s nursery rhyme which begins Sunday’s child is fair of face.

3.   How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

I set the novel in spent hours Cheltenham, a popular spa town which rivalled Bath, and spent hours researching it. I also consulted non-fiction books about the Regency era, costume, food, society etc. To meet my deadline to submit the novel, I resisted the temptation to look at ‘just one more thing.’

4.   How long did you take to write the book?

The first draft has taken me seven months.

5.   Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?

I’ve been writing since early childhood. Before BooksWeLove Inc published my novels, I suffered from many setbacks.

This year Gemini is rising in my Sun sign. The prediction for May and June, when I shall submit Friday’s Child and it will be published. is excellent.

6.   Do you write in a number of genres or stick to one?

So far, although I would like to write fantasy fiction, I have only written historical novels – a mediaeval novel set in the reign of Edward II, three novels set in the reign of the last Stuart monarch, Queen Anne and in the ever popular early 19^th century Regency era.

Thursday's Fourth Scene A Marriage Takes Two #MFRWAuthor #BWLPublishing #Eomance #Medical

The sound of Tony’s deep voice woke her. “Chad, time to be up and at ‘em.”

The order made her smile and raised an eagerness to see him, an eagerness she had to hide. She sat on the edge of the bed and listened to a sleepy child beg for a few more minutes.

“Come on, buddy.”

“Five minutes, please.”

“On your feet.”

She scurried to the bathroom that adjoined the guest room. The green silk underwear she’d washed the night before hung on the shower curtain rod. After putting on the wisps of silk, she slid into her jeans and pulled a sweater several shades darker than her bra over her head. Then she finger-combed her hair.

When she opened the door into the hall, she stifled a sigh. Tony looked better than he had in her dreams. What if he said no?

“Don’t borrow trouble,” she whispered. She stepped into the hall and caught her first glimpse of Tony’s son. He was his father’s image in miniature. Her thoughts rocketed to her first encounter with Tony -- the day he’d become her hero and her best friend.

The boy stamped his foot. “It’s not fair.”

“Life often isn’t.”

Carrie’s breath caught. Tony leaned against the wall. Faded jeans covered his long legs. He wore no shirt. Her gaze focused on the mat of dark hair on his muscular chest. The man was a walking anatomy lesson for the muscular-skeletal system. She itched to explore the lines of his pectorals, intercostals and muscles she’d forgotten how to name.

“Not fair. It’s not fair.”

“And who promised it would be?”  Tony asked.

Carrie held in a chuckle. How many times had he said those words to her?

“Son, just get on with what you have to do.”

This time, she laughed. Tony and Chad stared at her. The boy’s blue eyes turned hostile, but in Tony’s eyes, she saw memories and promises.

“Can we do something special tonight?” Chad asked.

“Count on it.” Tony grinned. “Carrie, come and meet my son.”

She clutched the promise she’d seen and strode toward them. “You certainly can’t deny he’s yours. He has the Flynn look.”

Tony winked. “There are times…” He ruffled his son’s dark curls. “Carrie, this is Chad. She’s an old friend.”

The boy’s eyes narrowed. “You don’t look that old.”

Carrie smiled. “You’ve got that straight. I’ve known your dad since I was your age.”

Chad grinned. “That’s forever. Guess you are old.”

“Hey,” Tony said. “She’s four years younger and was like my little sister.”

“Okay.” Chad headed down the hall. “Hazel’s here. I smell the coffee. Bet she makes pancakes ‘cause we have company.”

Once he started downstairs, Carrie forced her gaze away from Tony’s chest and met his eyes. “What did you decide?”

“Patience. Tell you later.”

Their gazes meshed. Warmth that had nothing to do with comfort and everything to do with desire flooded her system. She swallowed. Feeling this way was a sure recipe for disaster.

He thought of her as a little sister, and from what she’d heard in his voice last night, he still loved his ex-wife. Still, he might agree to a marriage of convenience.

That’s what she wanted. If she repeated those words for the next ten years, she might believe them.

“See you downstairs. Follow the coffee trail, but don’t drink it unless you like rocket fuel. Usually smells better than it tastes.”

“I already made the mistake of having a cup. Strong is a joke.”

Until he vanished into his room, she lingered in the hall and considered the situation. If he agreed to marry her, she was in trouble. With her feelings for him, the marriage would rapidly become very inconvenient.

Magda Malone jammed her hands in the pockets of her white lab coat and felt the fabric tear. Just what she needed to add a touch of anger to her friend’s sly request. Hadn’t he heard her resounding refusal?

     Her jaw clenched and she felt her teeth grind. The temptation to commit an act of violence hovered like a massive thundercloud. She stared out the window of her fifth floor office at Riverview Memorial and shoved her anger into a corner of her mind. The hospital didn’t need the Cardiac Units supervisor to ignite, especially over a personal matter.

      Sucking in a deep breath along with a quick count to ten she turned to her colleague and friend. At the moment she wasn’t sure friend was operative. “Repeat your question. I’m not sure I heard you?”

     “Would you join us for dinner tonight?” the cardiologist asked.

     “That’s not the part of the original question I want to hear. Wasn’t there more?”

     “Like I said. Nothing formal. It’s not a party. Just a family sort of thing.”

     Magda smiled. “Come on. Spit it out. I need to be sure I’m not going deaf.”

     He leaned his hip against the corner of the desk. “Lin and I want you to meet my new partner. He’s her cousin and a really great guy.”

     Magda glared. “Ben, let me repeat. What did you want me to do with this man?”

     He studied his hands. “Was just a suggestion.”

     “And that was?”

     “To show him a really good time.” He joined her at the window,

     She arched a brow. “A good time as in what?” She thought she knew the direction his thoughts traveled but she wanted to be sure she’d heard him correctly. Her hands fisted. “Does your wife know you’re soliciting?”

     “What?” His round face reddened. “That’s not what I meant … well, maybe … just –” He groaned. “Couldn’t you just fine … make him happy to be in Rivertown? If the two of you don’t click you could show him around the … dating scene. You know what I meant.”

     “Do I?”

     He heaved a sigh. "Lin and I want him to settle here.”

     Magda shook her head. “Spit it out, Doctor.” Anger oozed from the dark corner and colored her voice. “Just how do you expect me to accomplish your purpose?”

     He stared at her. “Anything it takes.”

     “No way.” She clipped the words with a razor edge. Would he understand why she was furious?

     “Mag, come on. Wasn’t I there for you when you needed a shoulder?”

     “I’ll give you that.”

     “I need a partner who will settle here permanently, especially now.”

Tuesday's Writer's Tip Where Is The Character #MFRWAuthor #BWLPublishing #Where #When

The third must in the opening of the book is the where and the when. Thses items have a great effect on the story.

Just where in this or another universe are the characters of the story found. There is much to learn about the physical place where your characters exist. Think of writing a historical but all the dialogue sounds like people of today speaking. The reader won't buy this. Or consider a gritty mystery story set in the slums where everyone talks as though they were college educated. The where has much to add to the story.

What year does the story take place? Writing about prehistoric times would be much different than writing about some year in the future. The story must show the time period when the story takes place. Being true to the time period is essential. A story set in the 1920s has a different flavor than one set in the sixteenth century. So pay attention to the time element of your story.

Another thing is what season, what month is featured in the story? Having a snow storm in July in the northern hemisphere means something drastic has happened to make this possible. The weather can add elements to the story. Think about the difference a rainy day can make characters act other than when the day is bright and sunny.

So make sure you have these elements present in your story.

Meander 1 -- Poem -- High Tide --

Waters rush, dash
At the huddled crown
Seeking to pull the masses from safety
She lets the high tide
To draw her further
Further out to sea.
When the waters break security
Into bubbles, froth and foam
Content she is to lie
On surging waves
High tide pulls her
From the shore
To reach the deepening sea.

Meander 2  Retreat. Many members of our chapter met at a resort kind of place and spent Saturday writing on our stories. I'm not sure how everyone else did but I managed to add about 2ooo words to my current WIP. The laughter and talk was great and we all learned more about each other. I hope the  events of the weekend carry over to the every day and people continue writing up a storm.

Meander 3 - Writing -- Finally got my latest WIP on target. A bit behind since I had to regroup and do some rewriting of several segments. Hopefully by the end of this month I'll be into the further drafts so I can finish the book soon.

Years ago, he loved Carrie but never said anything to her. Now burned, he doesn’t believe in love. To help her uncomplicate her life he agrees. 

Can Tony and Carrie get past the reason for the marriage and find love and make a home for his son?
