Healwoman The Villains #MFRWHooks #BWLAuthor #epic fantasy #healing #swords #quest

Join the authors at #MFRWHooks here  http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com for some intriguing excerpts. Mine is found at eclecticwriter.blogspot.com Meet the villains of Healwoman.

Blurb:

Born under a dark moon, Norna has to battle rumors that she is tainted by evil and unworthy of being anything more than a servant. Discarded by her mother, she runs away from her aunt, a priestess who wants her to enter the temple.
Instead, Norna chooses to be a Healwoman, and a chance encounter with a novice hoping to be a priest helps her discover she has talents of water, air and fire at her disposal. With these gifts she is called on to battle treachery and attempts to prevent the promised prophecy of the god and goddess. As she battles evil powers, she loses her heart to Shandor, the man she met when her journey first began. She must come to grips with Britha who plots against her. Shandor has his own enemy Vorgan. When the pair of foes unite, the battles begin.

Excerpt:

Britha paced across the courtyard of the posada.  Two days wasted.  Two days of boredom.  Two days of assisting Mabe while she treated the commoners.  At least the Militos had left and taken their laughter and joking about her prudishness.  They had no idea who she was or how experienced she was in love play.  She hadn’t been about to waste her talents on common soldiers.

As she peered down the road, she saw a man wearing a gray cloak that changed colors.  He didn’t walk, he swaggered.  When he drew closer, she smiled.  This man was no commoner and he wasn’t much older than she was.  His ice blond hair hung to his shoulders and his skin was a deep rich brown, almost the color of chocha.  She leaned against the wall.

When he entered the courtyard, his eyes appraised her.  She met his gaze and read interest in his dark eyes.  He entered the posada.  She followed and stood near the entrance to the common room.  He removed his cloak.  Her gaze lingered on his broad shoulders and muscular chest.

“Publican, a room for the night.”

The burly man bowed.  “Your name and reason for traveling?”

“Vorgan, aspirant to the priesthood on a quest for the Gate of the Shadows.”  He flipped the man a gold coin.  “This should cover my stay and the things I’ll need when I leave.”

“I’ll have a room prepared and make sure the bathing room is available.”  The publican bustled away.

Britha stepped closer to Vorgan.  “Don’t you take a risk by traveling alone?”

He turned.  “I’ve no fear.  Soon I will be Thiasi mid Vor.  Healwoman, what is your name?”

The timbre of his deep voice sent shivers along hr spine.  “Britha, cousin to Bodlesa, Keltoi of Keltoi.”

His eyes narrowed with interest.  “Have dinner with me.”

“I would enjoy that.”

“Give me an hour to get settled.”  He raised her hand to his lips and ran his tongue over the knuckles.

“I’ll be ready...and waiting.”  Britha hurried to her room on the woman’s side and opened her pack.  She pulled several vials of skin oil she’d blended.  After sniffing each, she chose one with an earthy spiciness.  This Vorgan was delicious.  Recalling how her fingers had itched to stroke his skin brought heat to her lower abdomen.  The speculation she’d seen in his eyes when she had mentioned her cousin made Britha believe she might have found an ally for her own plans.

Healwoman Meet the Hero #MFRWHooks #BWLAuthor #Fantasy #healing #swords #sorcery #romance

Join the authors at #MFRWHooks here  http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com for some intriguing excerpts. Mine is found at eclecticwriter.blogspot.com and features the hero of Healwoman

Excerpt:

A pungent odor halted him.  Though he’d never seen a living firelion, when he’d been a student in the Gate of the Tutors, he’d seen drawings of the beasts.  He’d also smelled vials of the feline’s venom and would never forget the phosphor scent.  He also knew the danger of an attack.  Not only did the firelions use claw and teeth, their fangs contained a fluid that ate flesh.

He cautiously crept forward until he reached a small clearing.  The fire in the circle was dead.  A heap of cloth lay on the ground beyond the fire.  When he edged into the clearing, he realized the cloth was a shredded chameleon cloak.  The priest had curled into a protective ball and spared his face from wounds.  Shandor noted the claw marks and the patches of burned flesh on mid Chu’s arms, legs and back.

Shandor searched for water and found a small stream not far from the camp.  He filled a leather flask and returned to the priest.  With cloth torn from an extra tunic, he cleaned the wounds.

Mid Chu’s eyes opened.  “Vorgan came.  Bragged.  Your trophy.  Took token.  Left.  Firelion came.”

Shandor leaned closer.  “I’ll find a way to help you.”

“No time.  Go.  Find Vorgan.  I’ll live as long as I can.”

Shandor sucked in a breath.  How could he abandon the man who had been his mentor for his entire training with the Shadows?  Mid Chu would suffer an excruciating death.  Shandor didn’t know how the Healwomen treated such wounds, but he had to try.  As he worked, he saw signs of Vorgan’s hasty departure.  He thought of what the priest had said.  Had Vorgan driven the firelion to attack the priest?

After building a small fire, Shandor lifted the older man’s pack.  He was torn between following the priest’s order to catch Vorgan and staying to help.  How could he leave?  Where would he find help?  How could he transport mid Chu to where help could be found?

By midday, the priest’s condition had worsened.  Several clusters of small blisters had formed on the burned flesh.  Shandor wished he had more than a talent for calling fire.  Why hadn’t he watched his Healwoman mother as she worked?  Could he have learned what to do?  He’d been just five when he’d left Bethsada to join his father.

He put water to heat and added chocha leaves.  While a mug cooled, he drank some and set snares in the forest.  Then, he carried the warm beverage to the priest.  “Mid Chu, you must drink.”

The priest’s skin burned.  Shandor sank on his heels.  He had to find help.  If the priest died, there would be no witness to Vorgan’s duplicity.  That meant any chance to join the priesthood would be lost.  The nearest place was the temple, but no priestess of Midra would help a servant of Midran.  How could he leave his mentor unprotected while he hurried to the nearest posada?  If the firelion returned, the priest wouldn’t survive a second attack.

Instead, Norna chooses to be a Healwoman, and a chance encounter with a novice hoping to be a priest helps her discover she has talents of water, air and fire at her disposal. EXCERPT:

She slipped into the hall.  Eternal torches set in brackets along the walls softened the deep shadows.  She crept toward the stairs.  When she heard her mother’s voice, she pressed against a door.

“Leave me alone.  I won’t drink your vile brew.”

“Will you allow me to train Norna as my successor?”

“A drab nursed her.  A drab raised her.  A drab I have named her and as one, she will remain.”  The frost in Bodlesa’s voice chilled Norna.

“What if Midra wants her?  The signs in the cup were strange.  Four colors, followed by red.  That is the color of this nome.”

Bodlesa’s wild laughter made Norna shiver.  “And the color of death and war.  Has the goddess marked her?  When I dragged her to the baths before we left the megara, her skin was unmarked.  She is mine to give or hold.  She will have no high place in the temple or the megara.  As one doubly misbegotten, she must pay for the life the Healwoman gave to her.”

“Will you return to the megara and willingly take Prasutus to your bed and produce the daughters who are needed?”

“You ask too much.”

“Until you agree, the cell will be your home.”  The iron in Ulrica’s voice made Norna ease away.  “Dear sister, your will is strong, but mine is as firm as the surface on the roads throughout the nomes.  Hold her while she drinks.”

Norna fled along the shadowy hall and returned to her cot.  Tears flowed down her cheeks.  What could she do?  Twice misbegotten.  A drab she’d been named.  She couldn’t accept that fate.  She had to escape and find a refuge.  Would the Healwoman give shelter to someone like her?

An evocative fantasy with hints of The Handmaid's Tale, when females are demoted to a servile role in their society. Ms. Walters spins a compelling story of struggle and empowerment. I must try the other books in this series.
Plus that cover is gorgeous!

Thursday Writing Healwoman #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #epic fantasy #healing #swords #Midra vs Midran #4 lands

When I began writing Healwoman, the main character came to life at an important time in her life. That was when her mother decided to turn her over to the priestesses of Midra in her incarnation as Mistress of the Dark Moon. This story was Norna's but also the hero plays a part and though there is not a happily ever after to the book there is a very satisfactory ending. Following the pair after Norna is able to become a Healwoman and he is part of the Midran priesthood was a fascinating journey. I really enjoyed writing the twists and turns of the story and knowing that someday the series would end.

EXCERPT:

She had dreams and plans to restore the reputation of the Healwomen. And bring them to their proper place. She must succeed.

She stumbled and when a rock shifted nearly fell. A scrap of parchment showed from under the stone. She crouched and carefully removed the tattered fragment. She held it to the light to read the few words.

The Three…Seer, Warrior, Healer…Come again…Unite with…

Those few words rocketed in her thoughts. They pointed the way. Her brow wrinkled. She had a command from the goddess. Why else had she found this shard?

The Eldest sat on a rock. Plans circled in her thoughts. Three young women must be found. She could create them and erase her failure. She slid the scrap into the pocket of her dark green divided skirt. Was there more knowledge hidden beneath the rubble? Could she find more information from the few remaining scrolls as the house?

Though she spent the rest of the morning overturning rocks and stones in what had been the scriptorium, she found no more fragments. A triumphant laugh emerged. The bit of parchment had been a gift from Midra.

I will be the one. The Three will come. The Seer, Warrior and Healer will bring change to Nilos. The midwives will regain their position in the land. A new hodara will arise to house the Healwomen who will become Healwoman.

EXCERPT:

The Hodara of Healing in Bethsada

Mabe sat on one of the stone benches in the Grotto.  The Eldest had called her here and she didn’t know why.  She didn’t think she had done anything to deserve a judging, but why else would the god and goddess want her presence?  Soon, the moon would rise and she would dip her hands in the chill waters of the crater lake.  Midra and Midran would speak.  The only time she had heard their voices had been the night she’d finished her training and had been accepted as a Healwoman.  She rubbed her hands along her arms.

The Eldest touched her shoulder.  “The time is near.  There are things I must tell you.”

“Are you sure ’tis me they want?”

“You are part of their plans for the future.”  The old woman smiled.  “In the days of yore, the Three of Midra--Seer, Warrior, Healer--united with their mates.  Together they defeated those who embraced the dark faces of Midra and Midran.  For a time, the priestesses and priests who served the god and goddess walked in the light and brought miracles to the land.  But as time rolled on its circular path, what was once came again.  The dark face of Midra enthralled the priestesses.  They turned from the light.  Then the power of the goddess faltered.  Midran drew his priests into the shadows.  Still, what was will come again.”

Mabe nodded.  She’d read the old tales kept in the archives.  She had found them fascinating, but were they true?  They told of the days when the face of the goddess had darkened.  ’Twas then the Healwomen had walked away from the temples to found their own place.  In the years that followed, the temples had ruled and men had little power in ruling any of the four divisions of the land now known as nomes.  Gradually, the priests of Midran had gained strength, first in the light.  Then they had embraced the dark face of the god.

She glanced at the dome over the cavern.  Rays of moonlight shone through the four crescent shaped holes, one for each nome.  Keltoi, Sippal, Nilos and Incal.  Bands of color--red, yellow, blue and white--spread across the water.  The arrival of the colors never failed to startle and amaze Mabe.  What caused them to appear?  She turned to the Eldest.  “What do the legends have to do with me?”

“One will come from Keltoi.  She is a daughter of this nome.  Her lineage rises from the Seer, the Warrior, the Healer and their spouses.  She will have four talents and will be the gleaner who finds the Four and Four.  One pair for each nome.  They will bring light from darkness.  You will seek and find her.  Bring her to Bethsada so she can enter the hodara and learn.”

Mabe nodded and accepted the task.  She felt both humbled and excited to be chosen.  “When do I leave?”

The Eldest rose.  “The god and goddess will tell you when.”  She placed her hands on Mabe’s head.  “Seek their blessing.  Their commands are for you alone.”

I enjoy well-written fantasy fiction. Ms Lane Walters’ novel Healwoman is a delight. It is one of the best ones I have
read for some time. It contains ingredients necessary for this genre, quests and magic. This talented author has
created a believable world on the brink of disaster, full of tension, conflict, love and lust, goodness and romance.
Healwoman is a page turner which I stayed up to read too late at night. I look forward to reading more of Ms Lane
 Walter’s novels.

I agree takes a little getting into but once you have got into the characters and got your head round the story its
well worth it. I found it an enthralling different type of story that I thoroughly enjoyed - well worth sticking with it,
