BLURB:

In Seppal, the prophecy has been heard and the Three and Three are awaited.

Ranal’s dead mam once told him one day he would learn why he had been born. He has found two companions, boys like himself who have no home and become seaweed gatherers like he has been. His two friends are developing strange skill. He can see no change in himself but he desires a sword. Then they will be three, Seer, Healer and Warrior

Amera returns to the clan after spending the summer with the king windsteed stallion and six yearlings. What she finds is the slaughtered herd and also the clan. Only one person remains barely alive and tells her Bethera, her cousin and almost sister has been taken by the priestesses and their guards. Not knowing what to do, Amera follows the king stallion to a sheltered glen and a huge cave complex. When the stallion calls her, she follows him to the priestesses’ keep and manages to rescue her cousin and another young girl. During the next few years, her friends develop talents and are becoming the Seer and the Healer. Amera wants to become the warrior but she can’t imagine how she can gain a sword.

Now the Three and Three must join to bring justice, healing, order and change to Seppal.

EXCERPT:

“Then what will we do?” Tegal asked. He began coughing.

Bethera grabbed a packet from her saddlebag and took Tegal’s mug from him. She added and stirred the liquid. “Drink this. Then come and live with us. There are small caves within the larger one.”

     Seval nodded. “We’ll come.”

Ranal frowned. Was this the right move? What did they know about these three women? Were they in some manner connected to the priestesses? A voice sounded in his head. “Seval?”

“I’ve read their thoughts and they are no threat to us. We are three and so are they. Together we have a destiny we must embrace for the good of Seppal.”

Ranal nodded. The three women seemed to be their equal and held the same roles. He finished his tea and rose. “We will join you.”

Once the remains of the meal were cleared, the three men entered the hidden room where the saddles for the windsteeds hung on the wall. They selected ones to match the manes of the three steeds that had chosen them. Then led by the king stallion, they rode away from the ruins.

BLURB;

EXCERPT:

The three unsaddled windsteeds raced after the galloping king stallion. As the ruins grew closer, Amera saw three men leave the opening of the large room. Young, tall and dark-haired. Who were they? As she approached she studied them. Their green eyes were much like hers and her companions. The unsaddled windsteeds arrived to face the men.

     “Who are you?” Amera asked.

“We are Three,” one said. “Who are you?”

“We are also Three. I am Amera, Warrior.” She indicated her companions. “Bethera, Healer. Ciera, Seer.”

The young man laughed. “Ranal, Warrior. Tegal, Healer and Seval, Seer. Will you join us for a meal? Alas, we have little food.”

Amera nodded. “We will. Our saddlebags are full. Spend time with your windsteeds. You have been chosen.” She dismounted and lifted her packs before unsaddling her steed. “We will await you inside.”EXCERPT:

Incal Meet 1 of the Seers #MFRWHooks #BWLAuthor #fantasy #romance #seer #warrior #healer

Join the authors at #MFRWHooks here http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com for some intriguing excerpts. Mine is found at eclecticwriter.blogspot.com and features one of the Seers from Incal

BLURB:

Return to the world where Midra and Midran rule. The god and goddess have two faces. Midra is Mistress of the Moon and also Mistress of the Dark Moon. Midran is Lord of lLght and Lord of shadows.

In Incal, the priests of Midran have formed three branches. The Voice of Midran in Incal rules over the mall. In the archived he has read of a tale predicting Three will come to return Midra to the rulership. He sends his acknowledged son to find the three and bring them to him.

Many years ago triplet girls were born in a remote mountain town. When they were five, their dying mother sent them to be fostered by three different women. Though they had wed to find each other, their developing talents caused them to forget until twenty ears later each one of them felt the need to find her sisters.

Would the Voice of Midran in Incal learn where they were?

Excerpt:

Pera left her sleeping chamber in the small stone house where she lived with the Reader of Lives. Since the age of five she had been the elderly woman’s student. She released a sigh and shut off the dream memories of her two sisters. Those days lay in the past but she’d dreamed of them for seven nights and waking in the morning with a sense of loss. Why now? She strode into the kitchen. Dreams didn’t fill the empty spaces in her heard.

She moved to the fireplace to prepare food for the day. Porridge with fruit for the morning, a tasty soup for midday and a hearty stew for the evening. Soon people would arrive with questions about their lives and problems. While the Reader listened and spoke words of wisdom, Pera observed and commented when necessary.

The elderly woman hobbled into the room and sat at the table. Pera filled two bowls with porridge and filled pottery mugs with juice blended from fruit and flavored by herbs. As they ate the Reader tested Pera’s growing talent.

When the questioning finished the Reader smiled. “You have learned and ready. I’m proud of you.”

“Ready for what?”

The elderly woman patted Pera’s hand. “Change lies on the horizon.” Her eyes took that faraway expression meaning a foretelling to come. Her eyes closed. “Your sisters will find you.”

“Truth. When?”

“Soon. Both are drawn here for they must seek while you wait.”

Pera’s breath flowed on a sigh. “I pray you are seeing what will be.”

“I am.” The Reader finished her meal and rose. “Time for us to hear the people seeking advice.” She walked to the door, crossed the grass to the stone chair. Pear cleared the kitchen and moved to sit at the Reeder’s side. She prepared to listen.

The first person, a middle-aged woman stated her problem. “What shall I do? My son has been tested by the priests. They want to take him from me. Though he’s but five he is the man of the house. What will my daughters and I do without him?” She wrung her hands.

Pera listened to the woman’s thoughts and found a thread offering s solution. She sent her ideas to the Reader using a mind to mind touch. “Her fears are justified. The farm is prosperous. Her dead spouse’s brought would claim the land. Her oldest daughter is courted by a young man who has no land. A wedding and a gift of the land would make him the man of the house.”

The Reader leaned forward. ‘I have had a vision that will solve your problem. You cannot rebel against the priests. Your son must go to them. Let your oldest daughter marry the young man who lives her. Gift the farm to them for the wedding with the provision they care for you and your other daughters. Do this and all will be well.”

And so the morning began.

An evocative fantasy with hints of The Handmaid's Tale, when females are demoted to a servile role in their society. Ms. Walters spins a compelling story of struggle and empowerment. I must try the other books in this series.
Plus that cover is gorgeous!

EXCERPT:

Etan groaned and opened his mouth for another gulp of water. Who? Where was he? He forced his eyes open. The sun stood high in the sky. Grass surrounded him. He knew he’d done that. Then he saw the woman. His eyes widened. Was he looking at himself?

“Who are you?” He noticed a pale yellow camma tearing mouthfuls of grass.

“Geria and who are you?”

“Etan.” He shook his head. “You could be me.”

She nodded. “Besa, my nurse, told me I had a twin. On the day of our birth a priest took my brother away. Are you a priest?”

He drew a deep breath. “The priest died. He asked Ma Nefru to care for me. She trained me as a thief. Then I grew and became a gardener. Why are you here?

“I couldn’t stay at the wadi any longer. My mother is a midwife but she is troubled by evil. When she learned I helped ill people she beat me until I nearly died.”

“Our lives are much the same. Ma Nefru had me beaten and abandoned because I wanted to give food from the garden to homeless children.”

“Where will you go?”

He managed a sitting position. His body didn’t ache as much as he feared. “I thought to the desert to find the woman who gave me away.”

She leaned forward. ‘She would have killed you. Besa told me our mother believed when the priest took you away both would die.”

“Where are you headed?”

She stood and turned a circle and then pointed. “Something pulls me in that direction.”

“Toward the mountains. Why?”

“I don’t know why. First I must go to Memphos and see what supplies I can buy. I’ll also need to find some kind of riding beast.” She pulled a wand from her pack and ran her hands over the length.

His eyes narrowed. “Where did you get that?”

“Besa gave this to me. She said once the wand had a green gem and was carried by a healer.”

Etan leaned closer. “I had one like that but the first time I was caught giving food away, Ma took it.”

She opened her pack. “I have a little food left. Maybe you can help me in the market.”

He nodded. “I could. We might need to find an inn or some place to shelter if the bargaining takes too long. Then you can sell the camma and buy supplies. The beast should bring enough coins to buy all you need. I would go with you to this place that calls you.”

She nodded. “Not being alone would be good and having someone who knows the city will be helpful. Not to mention a brother I have just found.” She shared the remaining food in her pack.

EXCERPT:

When Koben woke all was dark. During the night he’d been awakened by loud crashes but he’d rolled over. The total darkness of the cave shocked him. Should be morning. He drew his sword and called a flame. His eyes widened. Where the mouth of the cave had been he saw a wall of rock. The noise he’d heard must have been produced by an avalanche.

Trapped. The refuge a grave. His runaway thoughts sent him into a panic. The sword and flame wavered and danced. He drew a deep breath. The sword flame steadied. This wasn’t the time to give up. This problem called for work.

Dianan sat. “We’re trapped.”

“For now.” He hoped his voice showed confidence he didn’t feel. “We need to work.”

“How?” she asked.

“We must start removing rocks and stones from the blockage.

They walked to the wall. She turned. “While you hold the sword aloft, I’ll start. When I tire, we can switch.”

“Sounds good.”

For a time they alternated their jobs. They stacked what they removed on the sides. Twice they nearly started an inward fall.

Dianan dropped a rock on the floor and slumped to the ground. “I have to rest. I ache everywhere.”

Koben nodded. “Makes two of us.” He drank from the flash and wondered how long they would have to work. Would their water hold out? Would they grow too weak and tired to continue? “A short rest.”

“For now.”

“Might be good to concentrate on one area.” He closed his eyes.

When he woke, he felt a light breeze. He sat and saw a small hole had appeared. Dianan moved away from the wall.

“I’ve done all I can for now.” She sank on her blanket. “See what you can do.”

EXCERPT:

Koben huddled beneath a tree and tried to rest. His stomach growled. He’d had nothing since the morning meal except some sips of water scooped from the brook. Maybe he should go home but he wasn’t sure what he might face. Why had his questions angered his father? He’d been right. Dianan had been as good a fighter as he was.

He straightened. Sounds unlike the usual night noises of the forest arose. Someone approached. Was there more than one? He listened but couldn’t decide. Had his father sent trackers after him? He had hoped they would wait until morning so he would be far from the forge. He had to find a hiding place. He crept through the growth and found an evergreen with drooping branches. He slithered beneath the branches until he pressed against the trunk. He drew his sword.

The moon played hide and seek among the clouds. The sounds drew closer. A lone figure approached. His mouth gaped. Dianan. She held a sword. Where had she stolen one? She continued past his hiding place. He slid out and stepped behind her. She whirled. Moonlight glittered on her silver sword.

“Dianan,” he said.

She grinned. “Thought you’d gone home.”

“I’m not going back. Did the Swordmaster give you a sword as a bribe to find me?”

She shook her head. :”He doesn’t know I left. He was taking me away today. I wasn’t about to go to some man’s inner court even if he was the Voice’s son.”

“Where did you get the sword?”

“I drew the blade from the elements just the way you did yours.”

Koben frowned. He remembered what his father had said. “Impossible.”

Dianan punched his shoulder. “Truth. I did.”

“How is that possible?”

She knelt and pressed her hands on the earth. Before long she held a knife to match the sword. She discarded the one she’d stolen from the kitchen. “Do you believe me now?”

“Yes.”

“We’d better more on.”

“Do you have any food? All I’ve had is some water.”

She opened her pack and handed him a chunk of cheese and several pieces of flatbread. She walked away. “See you. You could be home by morning.”

“Where are you going?”

“As far from the forge as possible.” She paused. ‘There’s something calling me and I need to find the place.”
